With this publication, the Missoulian joins educators, students and newspapers worldwide in celebrating the importance of newspapers in classrooms. The Missoulian’s NIE program serves about 200 classrooms in western Montana. To be part of the program, schools, teachers or business sponsors buy newspapers at a special rate for use as classroom resources. Classrooms participate in the program through a variety of contests and projects sponsored by the Missoulian. Four contests have become traditional parts of our weeklong
celebration: write an editorial; draw an editorial cartoon; write a creative story based on a classified advertisement; and design an ad for an area business. You’ll see the results of all of these contests in this special section. All classrooms represented in the section will also receive enough of today’s newspaper so that every student has one. We hope you enjoy this wonderful publication put together with the help of our outstanding local classrooms. missoulian.com

First place Cell phones shouldn’t be allowed at school. They are a distraction for users, teachers, and other students. They cause people to slowly walk in the hallways, causing people not to pay attention where they are walking, and slowing people down who are trying to get to class on time. Cell phones in class can cause cheating by using a calculator when they shouldn’t in math, looking up answers in history, looking up definitions in English. Cell phones can cause injuries when people aren’t paying attention and cause them to trip on the stairs. The average high schooler checks their phone eleven times a day in class and spend up to twenty percent of class on their phones. That is one hour and ten minutes a day while in class that students are not learning and missing curriculum. Could the United States no longer being the best educated be because of all the time students miss? With these stats should cellphones be allowed at school?

Hello I’m scarecrow. I bought an Audi. I did not like it because it was red and I wanted a green Audi. I asked this guy if he would buy it and he said how many miles are on it and she said 49k. He said, “For how much?” She said $11,995. He said, “No thanks, that is too much for a car with 49k miles on it.” So he said to ask the shop and she did but they did not want it so she brought it to the junkyard, and then she moved to Chicago.

Second place I think that more vehicles should begin to use diesel as fuel rather than gas. Diesel is more efficient than gas because diesel has about twelve percent more energy per gallon then with gas and about sixteen percent more energy per gallon then gas with ethanol. Since it burns more efficient we know that it can get more miles to the gallon so your using less fuel so it emits less carbon dioxide into the air. If you follow this over the years you see a big difference in how much carbon dioxide is emitted into the air. Starting the movement toward using diesel engines rather the gas engine would not eliminate the problem but it would make a difference. Another benefit of this would be there wouldn’t be new gas motors coming out so the people who worked on those could now work on perfecting the electric motor. The electric motors are not good enough right now because you can’t go for very long without a charge, so there needs to be a way to charge it while its driving or longer lasting batteries. That’s why I think people and companies should start moving toward diesel motors and performance.

This guy is selling his Chevy because it only has 3 doors. His friend drove a car into the door and it came clean off. Then his friend also hit a skunk! When he got in the skunk sprayed. The car smells like rotten eggs. The next day someone stole the spare tire so they want to go to go get another one. But it smelled so bad they can not. They used Febreeze then they got a flat so they got stuck. They had to walk all the way to the tire shop. It took them 3 hours! Then they got back and someone was towing it. He paid 300 dollars to get it back, then he decided to sell it.

Third place If you went up to someone and asked what consent is, there’s a good chance they would use the analogy that it’s like a ‘cup of tea.’ This is because in most of the sex ed curriculums, the topic of consent is breezed through with a 3 minute video about tea. Schools should prioritize sex ed and go more in depth; not only when it comes to consent, but also what it means to have a healthy sexual relationship. Firstly, sex ed courses should be expanded more because some kids won’t get that education at home. School is their only resource for information, so they need to be taught thoroughly. Secondly, consent is something important that kids need to understand. 3 minute videos on tea won’t explain everything, and kids need to know what it means to give consent and to have consent. Finally, the sex ed curriculum should be revisited to give students more resources and more knowledge when it comes to being safe. Going in depth about birth control is especially important in order to prevent accidents. So in conclusion, the sex ed curriculum should be prioritized more in schools in order to properly educate and prepare students.

Hey guys and girls I’m here to talk about amazing champion labradors! Here are some reasons these animals are amazing. These champion labradors are strong, service dogs-puppies, master hunters and field champs. These puppies are also fast, funny, and adorable. The owner is giving them away because they are stinky. These puppies scoot their butts on the floor all the time. The owners can’t pay for them anymore because it’s a lot of money for food, vet and water. So if you would like one of these puppies, please find one of these puppies today.

Fourth place I’m more of concerned about this topic then actually angry or frustrated about it since I deal with this daily. Hellgate high school’s woodshop class is fun, interesting, and informative and we work on simple or complex assignments with wood tools such as saws, drills, belt sanders, and miller saws. The wood shop however has a concerning air filter situation as in there isn’t one or should I say an inefficient air filter for filtering the saw dust into fresh air. If this were to be implicated into the shop it would greatly improve the working environment and overall health of students and staff. I’ve learned about these safety hazard’s during my osha certification and about how air filters are essential to a healthy work environment, especially in a woodshop. To fix this the school needs to install a better and more efficient air filter to avoid causing lung problems for the students and staff.

Hello I’m Jack from the ad about puppies for sale. Well, I see little demons like, come on - the goldendoodle puppies sound like trouble! First they eat your shoes, then your couch then they eat you! Their ears are so soft looking and they’re so cute and cuddly. Those puppy eyes are so tiny. Ok, fine they’re cute but the way they behave is terrible. They eat and chew over and over. Stop!! don’t get those puppies I swear I’m telling the truth NOOO.

One day a cherry said, “I’m tired of my twin, he never let’s me go anywhere!” Now this cherry didn’t know it, but his twin would save him in some time to come. Now where are my manners? The twins names are Red and Ted and they dispise each other. Day and night Red has to deal with Ted and Ted has to deal with Red. Red is plump and happy and Ted is srivled and dull. One morning Red shouted, “I’m done being your twin! I’m done, done… Whoa! Red had shook a little to hard and was falling down, down, down to2wards the muddy ground. Over the years his pit turned into a great big cherry tree, and he had to deal with two bickering cherrys of his own. You know when I said his twin would save him? Well that’s a different story.
