Best Filmmaker Andy Smetanka

Missoula’s favorite filmmaker Andy Smetanka is the director and hand-cut paper animator of “When We Were Young,” (2015), an oral history of American soldiers at the end of World War I. Of this year’s winners, he said, “Thank you for voting me as your Best Filmmaker, Missoula! I think I can handily claim the honors for Slowest Filmmaker as well, though hopefully those things can be one and the same. It’s taken me three years longer than expected to finish my home movie history of Missoula, ‘A Place (Sort Of),’ but it will be ready and waiting for you when we can start going to the movies again.”
