MORE Youth Programs...So Much More Than Camp!

Principles of MORE Youth Programs • Experiential Education – Youth learn by doing. We facilitate adventures in an atmosphere of safety and fun where each child has the hands-on opportunity to explore the natural world around them. • Supervised Free Play in Nature – Staff provide specific opportunities for youth to play along side their peers in nature. This unstructured time allows kids to use their imaginations while exploring the natural world. • Positive Youth Development – Our programs are specifically built to foster self-determination, self – efficacy, provide recognition for positive behavior and opportunities, and to provide adult role models for your child. • Strengths–Based Approach – We appreciate your child for exactly who they are and work to find their strengths. Staff may set the structure, but the campers are active participants in the process and are valued for their individual skills and talents. • Industry Standard Trainings and Protocols – The MORE leadership team ensure that all of our policies and protocols meet or exceed current outdoor industry standards for safety. Safety protocol includes both the practices involved in adventure sports but also includes the training and expectations we require of our MORE instructors. It is not just a job – it’s our profession! 4

Silver’s Lagoon Fishing Regulations Silver’s Lagoon is for youth 14 and under and their accompanying adult. Kids 11 years and under do not need a fishing license. Ages 12-14 need a FWP Conservation license. The Lagoon is ADA accessible.

PLEASE... Don’t feed wild ducks and geese! Please don’t feed ducks and geese at Silver’s Lagoon...or anywhere. Bread, crackers, etc. is junk food for ducks and doesn’t contain the nutrients they need to stay healthy and wild. Feeding wildlife causes over-crowding, which spreads disease. Human food disturbs the birds’ natural migration patterns, and can cause illness and deformity.

Their natural food is best! 13

Flag Football for Grades K-6

FUN, SAFETY, FAIR PLAY & GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP Missoula’s youth hit the gridiron running for another season of youth flag football. We have a ton of fun in these non-competitive games with an emphasis in FUN, FAIR PLAY & GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP. Youth learn the basics of football from volunteer coaches and use those skills on the playing field. Jr. Playmakers is for boys and girls of all abilities where equal playing time and equal participation is expected and encouraged. Flag football is a great example of a skill sport requiring agility, strategy, team play as well as bone and strength development, according to UM health and Human Performance professor Dr. Steven Gaskill. Participants get their daily 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity as recommended by the Let’s Move Missoula initiative and the NFL’s Play 60 campaign. Coaches needed! If you are a parent/coach with football experience and would like to volunteer, please call 552-6266.

DISC GOLF AND ULTIMATE

Folf (Disc Golf) in the Parks Join Parks and Recreation and the Garden City Flyers for a free, family-friendly round of Disc Golf. Never played Disc Golf before? Garden City Flyers volunteers and Parks staff will be happy to help you learn the basics. If you like walking in the parks with your friends and family, you will love adding the fun of throwing a disc at a challenging target. Disc Golf is played much like traditional golf but with a flying disc instead of a ball and clubs. Players start at a tee box and try to get their disc into a basket in the fewest throws possible. Whether you want to compete with your friends or try a new family activity, you will have a great time playing one of Missoula’s favorite outdoor sports. We’ll create challenging but kid-friendly 9-hole courses in a different city park each week. Bring your own discs, or borrow them from your friendly Folf in the Parks staff. Check out our website www.missoulaparks.org for weekly locations and directions. Spring Session : Tuesdays, 5-7pm, April 7 - May 26. Summer Session: Tuesdays, 5:30-8:30pm, June 16 - August 25. Program is free, no pre-registration necessary.

Jr. Playmakers Youth Folf (Disc Golf) League Kids! This is a great way to get into disc golf. Our coaches will help you learn the game, then take you out on different courses around town. We’ll play every Tuesday evening rotating through the Folf in the Parks courses and take field trips to Playfair Park, Fort Missoula, and other great locations. Each participant will receive their very own Jr. Playmakers disc to remember their league experience! Kids will learn the game, meet new friends, and experience a different sport in their local parks. Register by May 16 and save 20%! Day/Time:

Mountaineering, Climbing and Self-Rescue Courses and Instruction Open Climb and BBQ Come out to McCormick Park and slack line 40 feet up on our Ropes Course. Practice skills, climb around on the course and get to know other climbers during this open climb and BBQ. Learn about the courses offered through the MORE program. BBQ meal provided.

Mountaineering 201 This three-day mountaineering course takes your skills in backpacking and rock climbing and moves them into more technical terrain. We will set up a backcountry base camp and spend the next two days venturing into a variety of terrain. You’ll learn about mountain weather movement, travel over snow, self-arrest with an ice axe, roped team travel, anchors in rock and snow, lowers and rappels, pacing, group dynamics and subjective hazards. Fee includes transportation, instruction, food, and equipment. Pre-requisites: Mountaineering 101 or experience with backcountry travel and camping, some prior climbing experience recommended. You need your own sturdy mountain boots; we can provide the rest of the equipment.

Climbing 101 An introduction to outdoor climbing—perfect for anyone looking to become more involved in the sport. Hands-on instruction covering knots, belaying, care for gear, and communication will provide foundations for outdoor rock climbing. No experience required.

Climbing 201 This course offers formalized instruction at great prices. If you’re ready to take your indoor gym skills to an outdoor setting – this class is what you need 22

to ensure your techniques and systems are ready for the natural rock. Top-anchor systems, basics of lead and sport climbing, and cleaning anchor systems will all be covered during the course. Pre- requisites: Climbing 101 OR previous experience with outdoor climbing.

Self-Rescue 101 You climb all the time; now learn what to do in case of an emergency. This course covers basic knots and anchor systems and techniques used to assist an injured climber in vertical terrain. We will talk about how to organize a group rescue, learn skills to raise, lower, and stabilize a patient, and rescue yourself if faced with an emergency situation. Other skills include: ascending ropes, belay escapes, and rappelling with a patient. Pre-requisites: Participants must be able to safely belay a climber. Familiarity with climbing knots and anchors is encouraged.

Self-Rescue 201 Application and critical thinking skills are put to use as a follow-up to the Self-Rescue 101 course. Students will practice their rescue skills in a controlled environment and think through complex scenarios from start to finish. We will also cover leader rescue, multi-pitch rescue considerations, and more advanced haul systems. Pre-requisites: Rescue 101 completion OR competence with basic self rescue skills including: load transfers, ascending ropes, and belay escapes.

Lead Instructor Brian Martens has taught climbing and mountaineering courses in Montana, California, Alaska, and Peru. In the off season he works for Western Montana Avalanche Center. Brian is passionate about his work with the MORE Program because it allows him to share his love for all things mountains!

Enjoy Your Day At Splash Montana and Currents! Parents, please note: Children aged 6 and under must be directly supervised by an adult, in the water and within arm’s reach. Thanks for helping us keep your kids safe! At Splash Montana

Weather Closure and Cancellation Policy

• Splash Montana is a full-service facility. We provide food sales, day-use lockers, float toys, lounge chairs, lifeguards, swim instructors, and pretty much anything you might need.

Aquatics Weather Line: 542-9283 (WAVE)

No outside food or drink, please.

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services requires lifeguards to clear all guests from the pool and have them take shelter in the locker rooms whenever lightning or thunder is observed. The pool will remain closed until the storm has passed. Please note: Both indoor and outdoor pools can be required to close during a lightning storm!

Only store bought, sealed, plastic water bottles or empty personal water bottles (can be filled from our water fountains) will be allowed into the facility. NO GLASS! Please leave your coolers at home. (If you have a medical need, please inquire at the front desk for accommodation).

Splash Montana re-entry policy Guests may need to exit and re-enter during the course of the day. To do so, stop an get a handstamp on your way out and pay the $1 re-entry fee when you return.

At Both Pools • To maintain the safety and security of young swimmers, children ages 7 and under must be accompanied by an adult at both pools. Children ages 6 and under must be directly supervised by an adult (within arm’s reach, in the water.) • Maximum of 3 children under the age of 5 per adult supervisor. All patrons who enter pool deck area must pay admission fee. • Bring a lock for the day use lockers or purchase one at the front desk for under $5. Please do not bring valuables into Splash Montana or Currents. • Please bring your own towels and swim suits. Swim diapers and suits which seal off the legs and waist are required for infants and not-yet-toilet-trained toddlers. (If you’re not sure, have your toddler wear them!) Swim diapers and re-usable infant swim pants are available for sale at both pools. • Smoking is not allowed on the premises or within 25 yards of the facilities. • To help maintain water quality during recreation swim, both facilities will stage 5-minute “Safety Checks” at 90-minute intervals throughout the day. All guests will be required to exit the pools. This is a great time for children (especially preschoolers) to use the restroom. 42

Missoula Parks and Recreation is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for guests at our facilities.

In the event Splash Montana is closed for the entire day, Season Pass holders will be allowed to swim at Currents, our indoor water facility. Guests who have entered the facility and have had less than one hour to swim will receive coupons for admission to the pool on another day. All guests may receive hand stamps which will allow them to re-enter the facility at no additional cost that day, should the pool re-open. If the outside air temperature is very cool (below 70°) or the weather stays cool and rainy all day, the facility may close for extended periods. Staff will re-evaluate the weather conditions at 11am, 2pm and 4pm to decide if it is feasible to open. Remember, the sun is ALWAYS shining at Currents! Please be sure to check with your favorite weather forecaster before committing your group to swimming at Splash Montana on a particular day.

Splash Montana Swim Lessons and Inclement Weather Call the weather line at 542-9283 for weather updates. Swim lessons will be held if it is at all possible to do so. We’ll check the weather at least 30 minutes before lessons begin. If the temperature is below 50°or if lightning or thunder is observed, classes may be cancelled that day. Makeup classes will meet on the Friday of that week, at the same times.

URBAN FORESTRY Be consistent with watering your trees It is much better to water 2-3 times per week with deep soaking rather than shallow watering every day. Most irrigation systems designed to provide water for grass are poor at watering trees.

Mulch your trees Mulching will do wonders to increase the moisture-holding capacity of your soil. An organic wood mulch layer about 3-4 inches thick, spread as wide as the drip line of the tree will hold the moisture longer, inhibit weed growth and help to moderate soil temperatures. Pull the mulch away from the trunk of the trees 3-4 inches to deter fungal diseases and mechanical damage done to the bark of young trees.

Pruning, planting or removal of boulevard trees All tree work must be approved by the Urban Forestry Division prior to work being performed.

Urban Forestry Master Plan The Urban Forestry Division has drafted a master plan for the urban forest and it is currently under consideration for City Council adoption. Review the plan at www.missoulaparks.org. An Urban Forest Master Plan is a road map, providing detailed information, recommendations, and resources needed to effectively and proactively manage and grow a city’s urban forest. It provides a shared vision for the future of the urban forest to inspire and engage stakeholders in the care and protection of Missoula’s park and street trees.

Summer Tree Care When the heat is on, water is crucial to a plant’s survival. Yellowing leaves on hardwoods and ornamentals and yellowing or browning of evergreens can indicate a need for supplemental watering. Monitoring the amount of rainfall during the summer months and providing the trees with a cool drink can help a tree to stay healthy and help fight off any other afflictions it may have.

Water trees deeply using a hose or irrigation system. Many people believe that trees are self-sufficient and do not

Remember, it is your responsibility to maintain the trees on the boulevard. The Urban Forestry Division will assist as much as resources allow. Please feel free to call Urban Forester Chris Boza at 552-6270 for more information on maintaining trees and shrubs or any plant health care questions you may have. Visit our website, www.missoulaparks.org, for tree care tips and ordinances related to trees in the City right-of-way. Always hire a licensed and insured ISA Certified Arborist to perform tree work and NEVER TOP YOUR TREES!

require much care after being planted. In our semi-arid climate this is not true. At a minimum trees need water from May – November. This will encourage strong roots and healthy tree. Two inches of water once a week during the summer is an average amount to water your trees. A general rule is to provide 5-10 gallons of water per inch diameter of the trunk, spread over the entire root zone. The root zone is generally 2-3 times the drip line, or the outer limits of the branches.

PARKS AND TRAILS Phase II construction includes the 63-acre eastern portion of the park, and features additional picnic shelters, another playground, a fitness trail and play stations, a dog park with pond, turf areas for open play, an extensive trail system, historic interpretation, tennis and pickleball courts and softball diamonds. Construction on Phase II will begin as early as Fall, 2016 with facilities ready for use as early as Fall, 2017. To receive email updates on FMRP and the playground projects, visit missoulaparks.org.

New and improved playgrounds

2014 Parks and Trails Bond • Fort Missoula Regional Park • New County Trails Program • New and improved playgrounds

With the passage of the 2014 County-wide Parks and Trails Bond, work to implement the Bond projects began immediately. Following an extensive procurement process, CTA Architects Engineers has been selected as the lead consulting firm for the playground project. The Land Group, Inc., with DJ & A, P.C. and OZ Architects, will provide consulting services for Fort Missoula Regional Park (FMRP.)

Fort Missoula Regional Park: Something For Everyone! • Explore the outdoors on over 5k of trails and 156 acres of parkland, open space and wildlife habitat. • Learn and play on 4 new playgrounds, including fitness/play stations. • Connect with friends and neighbors at the picnic shelters and public spaces. • Take your canine pals for a run and swim in the new dog park.

Construction of new playgrounds or playground enhancements at Bonner, Franklin, Greenough, McLeod, Northside, Pleasant View, Rainbow, Skyview, Wapikia and Whitaker parks will begin this summer and continue through the fall. Sites will be selected based on impacts to summer users, safety, and the amount and type of work necessary to improve the playground in each Park. In addition, Silver Summit playground in McCormick Park will begin Phase II implementation with help from the Parks and Trails Bond. To stay current on progress and participate in surveys regarding your playgrounds, visit missoulaparks.org to register for email notifications.

New Missoula County Trails Program Contact County Parks and Trails for more information on the new Trails Program launched as a result of the passing of the November 2014 County Parks and Trails Bond. The County expects to begin taking applications for trail projects as early as this summer. Find more information on their website: www.co.missoula.mt.us/mccaps/Parks.htm.

PARKS AND TRAILS More new playgrounds in your neighborhood parks Parks and Recreation has successfully taken advantage of Community Development Block Grant funding to replace playgrounds at Little McCormick Park and Kiwanis Park. The Little McCormick Park playground, located at the intersection of Toole Avenue and Alder Street, was completed late last year and features a group swing and play equipment for the 2-to-6-year-old age group. At Kiwanis Park, design is underway for the replacement of the restroom, shelter, and play equipment. The project will replace aged infrastructure, increase safety by following Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Guidelines and meet ADA and safety standards for all new features. Construction is slated to begin in Summer, 2015, pending successful bids. Many thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Missoula for their $10,000 donation to this project.

Grant Creek Trail The City’s 2-mile section of the Grant Creek Trail is 75 percent complete, with final completion slated for early Summer, 2015. The 8-foot wide asphalt trail runs parallel to Grant Creek Road and extends from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to the City limits, just north of Old Grant Creek Road. Missoula County will complete the remaining 1-mile section of the trail, from City limits to Snowbowl Road, as resources allow. Currently, the Old Grant Creek Road to Mellot section is slated for construction in 2016.

Silver Summit All-Abilities Playground Montana’s first state-of-the-art universally accessible playground opened in Fall, 2014 in McCormick Park. Parks and Recreation will continue to work with The Playground Project and Friends of Missoula Parks to build Phase II improvements, including completion of landscaping, a labyrinth garden, and tactile play features. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, The Playground Project is encouraging individuals to donate $25 or more at www.allabilitiesplayground.org.

PEAS Farm The City signed 40-year lease with Missoula County Public Schools for the Garden City Harvest PEAS Farm and adjacent playing fields, preserving 13 acres of agricultural land and open space on Duncan Drive for the community’s benefit.

Missoula to Lolo Trail Missoula County and its partners received a $4,580,363 rural TIGER grant award to construct the Missoula-to-Lolo (M2L) trail. This eight-mile, 10-foot wide shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path will parallel US Highway 93 between Missoula and Lolo. The new trail will connect the Bitterroot Trail in Lolo with the City of Missoula’s Bitterroot Branch Trail, allowing continuous shared-use path connectivity between downtown Missoula and Hamilton.

While the majority of trail construction will be in the County, a portion of the missing link is located within the limits of the City of Missoula. Parks and Recreation has been working closely with all of the partnering agencies to make the necessary trail connections. Missoula Redevelopment Agency is also partnering on the project by funding a grade separated crossing over Reserve Street. Construction on the M2L trail will begin this spring. Visit missoula2lolotrail.org for more information.

Planning for the future In 2014, neighborhood representatives and Parks staff worked together to complete master park plans for Hellgate, Jeannette Rankin and Bellevue Parks. A master park plan is a blueprint for future development of a park, and allows citizens to specify the level of development and the features they’d like to see in their neighborhood park. Once a master plan is in place, the department can explore funding sources like grants, partnerships, private funding and the City’s Capital Improvement Program.

City Card Resident Discount Program City residents contribute directly to the operations of Parks and Recreation programs through their property taxes. The Resident Discount Card allows City residents to receive a reduced rate on Parks and Recreation programs and admission to Currents and Splash Montana. Residents who choose not to enroll in the Resident Discount Program, and all non-residents, will pay the regular fee for all programs and pool admissions. The Resident Discount is approximately 20 percent. Some programs are exempt from the resident discount including Adult Sports Teams and programs which are contracted with an outside provider. The CityCard is optional and is not required to register for any Parks and Recreation program. The card simply allows City residents to receive a reduced rate if they so desire.

City Residents: Get Your City Card today and save about 20% on pool admission, passes and punch cards, and most recreation programs! • You must reside within City limits. • Not all Missoula mailing addresses are within city limits.
