e choose Missoula! And now all of you have chosen your favorites for this year’s edition of Missoula’s Choice. Our annual awards section is one of the most fun projects we do each year at the Missoulian. All those good vibes keep us smiling for weeks, as Missoula collectively raves about our favorite people and places. Even the debates are good-natured. What’s the best place to sing karaoke? Who’s the best lawyer in town? Who’s got the best Moscow Mule? Anyone got a favorite professor? Bowling alley? Hiking trail? In the end, the Missoula’s Choice awards remind us how doggone much we all love this place – and how much we at the Missoulian love all of you, our readers! Enjoy!

Entertainment & Personalities
A
town’s reputation is built by its citizens and their hobbies. Missoulians know this better than anyone. Our city will be eternally identified with rivers, fly fishing and an inflated real estate market, courtesy of Norman Maclean’s revered novella A River Runs Through It and the subsequent movie version that compelled thousands of east coasters to move out here. As we all know, there’s so much more to Zoo Town than trout. Missoula boasts a thriving night life, a host of art galleries, concerts galore, a festival almost every summer weekend, powdery slopes and scenic golf courses. The number of resident musicians, authors and artists keeps growing. And most importantly, we’ve got a community that cares enough to vote!
Art Gallery
Like breweries, there seems to be no end to the number of art galleries Missoula is able to support. Each new exhibition is a chance to find a new favorite artist at the Dana, Monte Dolack or Murphy-Jubb. Dana Gallery Monte Dolack Gallery Murphy-Jubb Fine Art

Dining
M
issoula dining offers gastronomic delights for every budget and palate. Even picky eaters won’t go away hungry. Voters supported locally owned wine bars along with national fast food chains. They stood by old favorites and embraced new enterprises. They’re adventurous, but also love slicing into traditional Montana fare like a hot-off-the-grill steak. Some of the menu items that voters love are Missoula-made: microbrews, wine made from Rattlesnake-grown grapes, locally distilled spirits, roasted coffee beans and hand-crafted teas, huckleberry pastries, and scoops of Cold Smoke beer ice cream, a flavor two of our winners collaborated on. Digest the following results. We think they reveal one indisputable fact: our city’s got great taste(s)!
Hot Dog
The ultimate summer food, the hot dog, is waiting to be piled high with relish and mustard at any of these local spots. Dairy Queen Costco Covered Wagon Hot Dogs
Coffee
There will be none of that freeze-dried, K-cup nonsense here. When Missoulians need a hot cup of joe, they pick the local shop and brew it piping hot. Florence Coffee Black Coffee Roasting Company Hunter Bay
Espresso
Liquid Planet knows the way to Missoula’s heart is a doubleshot latte, and they have been there, portafilters waiting, for the employees, parents and students who need a little pick-me-up. Liquid Planet Loose Caboose Florence Coffee

T
hink about it: there’s no sales tax here. Once you’ve traveled to another state and had to put an item back on the shelf because you’d forgotten to add on that extra 9 percent, you realize that spending money in Missoula is actually saving you money! Not only that, but the money you spend is staying in western Montana. Missoulaand Montana-owned businesses overwhelmingly placed in the top three of this year’s shopping categories! Local shop owners know first-hand what Missoulians want to buy: trucks, Danskos and Chacos, bumper stickers with Missoula attitude, casual clothes, Griz wear, outdoor gear and dog toys. National chains, many of which are run by Missoulians, were hardly shut out. The affordability, selection and brand names offered by these stores undeniably appeal to voters.
