1976 BIKECENTENNIAL STAFF PHOTO
Bikecentennial was launched in Missoula in 1976 with 30 staff and dozens of volunteers to support 4,100 cyclists who rode all or part of the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail to celebrate America’s 200th birthday. In 1977, the staff shrank to just a few hardy souls — but since then has grown to 40 professionals and hundreds of volunteers who now power the largest cycling nonprofit in North America with more than 50,000 members. Every year, Adventure Cycling inspires and empowers hundreds of thousands of people to travel by bike, through the award-winning Adventure Cyclist magazine, the best bike route maps in North America, great online content, more than 100 tours, and an advocacy program to create better cycling conditions in the U.S.
