president’s message Jim Valeo Welcoming you to a streamed program is getting to be a habit. Now it is Holiday Pops. Again, thanks to our staff and musicians for keeping music coming, under what we hope will be once-in-a-lifetime circumstances. You will be happy to know that our new Music Director, Julia Tai came on board on November 1. She hit the ground running, and, as you will see, is involved in this concert. WELCOME JULIA! We are thrilled. On a more serious note, this has been a most unusual year for everyone including your Missoula Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. Our mission statement says music is important to our well-being as individuals and as a community-no more so than under current circumstances. The MSA is most grateful for your continued support as we all work to fulfill that mission.

Executive Director’s Message Jo May Salonen
As I write this, there is snow on the ground which is the perfect setting for our Holiday Pops! concert. Continuing our virtual season, we are pleased to be back in the Dennison Theatre to perform our annual holiday concert. It’s nice to be “home” and we have maintained many of our traditions for this concert – the Chorale is singing, Caras Nursery is providing festive décor and some special friends will be joining us from the North Pole! And, we start a new tradition – our new Music Director, Julia Tai, is conducting the string orchestra and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her on the podium! This virtual season wouldn’t be possible without the generous support from all of you, our patrons and sponsors. You have bought tickets, maintained your financial donations and sent in comments of hope and encouragement. I keep a small note on my desk from a patron that says, “Thank you for persevering”. We have done our best to do so, even in the face of this pandemic. We miss seeing all of you at the theatre and while this pandemic may last longer than we desire, we know it won’t last forever. Thank you for supporting the Missoula Symphony Orchestra & Chorale, enjoy the concert and the holiday season and as always, please stay safe and healthy!

Julia Tai Music Director Praised by the Seattle Times as “poised yet passionate,” Julia Tai is one of today’s most dynamic young conductors on the international stage. Currently, she is the Music Director of Missoula Symphony Orchestra & Chorale, Philharmonia Northwest, and the Co-Artistic Director of the Seattle Modern Orchestra. Her career has led to acclaimed performances and rehearsals with the American Youth Symphony, Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic (Czech Republic), Brandenburger Symphoniker (Germany), Estonian National Youth Symphony (Estonia), New Symphony Orchestra (Bulgaria), Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM (Mexico), Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil Charlos Chávez (Mexico), and the Seattle Symphony. Ms Tai has established a reputation for her creative programming and community partnerships. She has increased the esteem of her orchestras by elevating their artistic output, commissioning new works by renowned composers, and serving diverse communities. In 2017, in collaboration with Finlandia Foundation, Philharmonia Northwest celebrated Finland’s centennial by presenting Finland 100 at Benaroya Hall, featuring three generations of Finnish composers. The concert was attended by Finland’s ambassador to the U.S. from Washington D.C. The orchestra has co-commissioned new works by PDQ Bach (Concerto for Simply Grand Piano and Orchestra), Mexican composer Osvaldo Mendoza (Three Mexican Portraits), Chinese-American composer Dorothy Chang (Gateways – Concerto for Erhu and Piano), and Sheila Silver (Being in Life – Concerto for French horn and Alpenhorn, 5 Tibetan singing bowls, and string orchestra). Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Ms Tai began her violin studies at age four and piano at eight. She received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she was awarded “Outstanding Graduate” in 2004. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Washington.

dean peterson Chorale Director Dean Peterson has served as Director of the Missoula Symphony Chorale since 2006. In 2011, he retired from his position as Director of Choirs at Hellgate High School, where he taught for 25 years. He served as interim Director of Choirs at the University of Montana for the 2011–2012 academic year, and has served as conductor of the Missoula Mendelssohn Club since 2011. He currently works with the College Music Society as Coordinator of Community Outreach and Careers. Dean received his Bachelor degrees in Music Education and Piano Performance from the University of Montana, and his Masters degree in Music Education with Kodaly emphasis from Holy Names College in Oakland, CA. In 1987 he co-founded the Missoula Youth Choir and co-directed the group in all eight of their performances in the Missoula International Choral Festival. In 1992 he was selected to sing in the Robert Shaw Choral Workshop and Performance of the Beethoven Missa Solemnis in Carnegie Hall. In 1997 he received a $25,000 National Milken Educator of the Year Award, and in 2004 his Hellgate Chevaliers were selected to perform at the Northwest Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Boise, Idaho. Dean was recognized by the National Federation of High Schools as the 20102011 Outstanding Music Educator for Montana and the Northwest region. In March 2011, he was named Missoula Arts Educator of the Year by the Missoula Cultural Council and he received the 2011 Distinguished Service Award for the Montana Music Educators Association. In March 2014, Dean was honored by the University of Montana in the annual Odyssey of the Stars. He is a member and past president of the Montana Choral Directors Association, a member of the Montana Music Educators Association, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Missoula International Choral Festival. He and his wife, Dorothy have been very active musically in Missoula for over 30 years and are the proud parents of two children: Ross and Elin.

Holiday Recipe Favorites! Music Director, Julia Tai’s
Pumpkin Pie Recipe
8 oz cream cheese (softened) 2 cups mashed pumpkin (15 oz can) 1 cup sugar 1/4 tsp salt 1 egg & 2 egg yolks 1 cup half and half 1/4 cup melted butter 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp ground ginger
Beat all the ingredients in the order listed until combined and smooth. Pour the filling into the warm prepared pie crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 min.
Concertmaster, Margaret Baldridge’s Bara Brith (Welsh bread) Recipe
2 c. milk 1/2 c. shortening (I use butter) 2/3 c. sugar 1 t. salt 1 t. cinnamon 1 t. nutmeg and 1/2 t. ginger 2 T. molasses 2 eggs 2 packages yeast 1/4 c. lukewarm water 8 c. flour 1 c. raisins. I use golden 1 c. candied fruit. (I use black currents) 1c. chopped nuts. (the nuts are optional)
Scald milk and pour over butter, sugar, molasses, salt and spices. Cool to lukewarm. Add 2 well beaten eggs and yeast which has been softened in lukewarm water. Add about half of the flour. Beat until smooth. Add remaining flour. Mix well. Stir fruit and nuts into dough. Knead about 5 minutes on lightly floured board. Let rise in warm place about 1 hour until impression of a finger remains in dough. Knead lightly to remove gas. Let rise about 45minutes more. Form dough into 3 loaves. Place in greased loaf pans. Let rise about 1 1/2 hours until impression of finger remains in dough. Bake at 350 for about 50 minutes. Yields 3 loaves.
Chorale Director, Dean Peterson’s Christmas Ball Recipe 1/2 cup (50 grams) pecans 1/2 cup (50 grams) walnuts 1/2 cup (70 grams) pitted dates, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup (70 grams) dried figs, stems removed and coarsely chopped 1/2 cup (70 grams) dried cherries or cranberries 1/2 cup (70 grams) dried papaya or apricots, coarsely chopped 1/2 tablespoon (5 grams) candied ginger (optional) 1/4 cup (30 grams) confectioners (powdered or icing) sugar (optional) 1 tablespoon honey, golden syrup, or light corn syrup 1 - 2 tablespoon Grand Marnier or freshly squeezed orange juice Toppings -Sugar (granulated white sugar, confectioners, powdered or icing) -Finely chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds or pistachios) -Cocoa Powder -Dried Sweetened or Unsweetened Coconut (finely ground) -Dark or Milk Chocolate (finely grated)

1/2 cup chopped walnuts (can be omitted if people don’t like nuts) 3 cups sugar (can be reduced by 1/2 a cup if desired) 1 cup olive oil 4 eggs 1 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp nutmeg 2/3 cup cold water 2 cups canned pumpkin 3 1/3 cup flour
Mix until well blended. Pour into 3 foil pans – greased with olive oil. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Cool on a wire rack and then cover. These freeze really well! Test the loaves at about 55 minutes – use a toothpick to check. Sometimes an extra five minutes is needed on the total cooking time. Don’t overcook or the ends will be too done.

Fruit Cobbler Recipe
1 c. self-rising flour (or 1 c. all-purpose flour plus 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder and 1/4 tsp. salt sifted together) 1 c. milk 1 stick of butter, melted 1 c. sugar (white, brown, or a mix, to taste depending on the sweetness of your fruit) 1 16oz can/jar of summer fruit with syrup or 2 cups of frozen summer fruit* Optional: a dash of spices like cinnamon, cardamom, or nutmeg as desired to pair with your chosen fruit
Preheat oven to 350. Mix flour, sugar, milk, and melted butter in a 13x9 baking dish. Add fruit and mix to combine. Bake until golden brown, about 1 hour. Allow to cool slightly. Optional (but why would you not): serve warm with ice cream!
*if using frozen fruit, use 1/4 c. more milk; if using unsweetened canned/jarred/frozen fruit, add a bit more sugar.

MONTANA SUZUKI INSTITUTE PRESENTED BY THE MISSOULA SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION
The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess ability that can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. Though the Suzuki method enables children to play music to a high standard, and many Suzuki-trained students have become highly acclaimed professional musicians, the training of professionals is not the aim: the emphasis throughout is on the development of the whole child. The goal is to develop a supportive community around our children – one in which parents and teachers work together to ensure that the full potential of every child is developed. Mr. Suzuki’s vision was “education that inculcates, brings out, develops the human potential... that all children on this globe may become fine human beings, happy people of superior ability, for I am convinced that all children are born with this potential.” We are proud and honored to present the Montana Suzuki Institute; offering musical instruction of the highest quality to children of all ages in a nurturing environment that brings families together. Continuing the grand tradition of the Missoula Symphony Guild, the Missoula Symphony Scholarship Fund is dedicated to providing scholarships for outstanding University of Montana music students who play in the Missoula Symphony Orchestra or sing in the Missoula Symphony Chorale. This year, the Missoula Symphony Association will award more than $10,000 in scholarships to six talented young musicians. New in 2020- 2021, this scholarship is named in honor of Will and Kay Cook. “We are happy to partner with the University of Montana and The Missoula Symphony Association to support the growth of music education in Montana and the cultural enrichment of our city.” Recipient: Jayla Mitchell, cello. Jayla is from Great Falls, Montana and is a cello performance major.
The Florence Reynolds Scholarship
Named for a woman who shared her musical talent, enthusiasm and endless energy with the MSA for many years. Recipient: Ryan Zoanni, violin. Ryan is from Billings, Montana and is a music major.
The Women’s Symphony Guild President Scholarship
Named in honor of those women who have given their time and energy as Presidents of the Missoula Symphony Guild. Recipient: David Harmsworth, Cello. David is from Missoula, Montana and is a music major.
The Joseph Henry Scholarship
Named in honor of our Music Director Emeritus, who retired in 2007 after 21 years as Music Director of the Missoula Symphony Orchestra. Recipient: Lea Tonnerre, Viola. Lea is from Missoula, Montana and is a physics major, with a music minor.
The Donald Carey Scholarship
Named in honor of our former Chorale Director who retired in 2006, after 18 years at his post. Recipient: Bayley Ginnaty, Viola. Bayley is from Great Falls, Montana and is a viola performance major.
The Virginia Vinal Scholarship
Named in honor of the longest-serving member of the orchestra, and her dedication to music and community. Recipient: Emily Rogers, Violin. Emily is from Great Falls, Montana and is a music performance major.

Not a scholarship but a cash award, this prize is presented at the final concert of each season to a U.M. graduating senior who is deemed a truly outstanding and dedicated orchestra member.
