GORDON JOHNSON Guest Conductor During his thirty-five year tenure as conductor of the Great Falls Symphony, Gordon Johnson has been known for his energetic performances and dynamic leadership. In addition to his responsibilities in Great Falls, Maestro Johnson continues to maintain a busy schedule having guest conducting engagements with orchestras throughout the United States, Canada, England, Japan, Germany and France. In February 2009 Johnson was invited by the United States State Department to conduct an American music program with the National Philharmonic of Moldova. Johnson has served as the music director of the Glacier Symphony (MT) from 1982 to 1997 and later of the Mesa Symphony (AZ) from 1997 to 2005. He served as the director of orchestras at the Red Lodge Music Festival (MT) from 2006 to 2011. In addition to the Great Falls Symphony he is conductor emeritus of the Great Falls Youth Orchestra where he was directly involved in the training future generations of orchestral musicians. He is past President of the Military Affairs Committee and continues to serve as a member of the Board of Directors. In 2012 he was awarded the Distinguished Patriot Medal by the Department of Military Affairs Adjutant General of the State of Montana. During his many years of concertizing Johnson has served as accompanist to many superb musicians including world renowned artists Yo Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Midori, Sir James Galway, Evelyn Glennie and Joshua Bell. He has collaborated in concert with many of America’s most popular artists including Art Garfunkel, Amy Grant, Trisha Yearwood, Kansas, America, Lee Ann Rimes and Charlie Daniels. The Missoula Symphony Orchestra & Chorale collaborated with Johnson on “Play Me Montana”, a musical symphony written by Montana native and songwriter, Tim Ryan. Our musicians look forward to again playing under Maestro Johnson’s baton!

DeaN PeteRSON Chorale Director Dean Peterson has served as Director of the Missoula Symphony Chorale since 2006. In 2011, he retired from his position as Director of Choirs at Hellgate High School, where he taught for 25 years. He served as interim Director of Choirs at the University of Montana for the 2011–2012 academic year, and has served as conductor of the Missoula Mendelssohn Club since 2011. He currently works with the College Music Society as Coordinator of Community Outreach and Careers. Dean received his Bachelor degrees in Music Education and Piano Performance from the University of Montana, and his Masters degree in Music Education with Kodaly emphasis from Holy Names College in Oakland, CA. In 1987 he co-founded the Missoula Youth Choir and co-directed the group in all eight of their performances in the Missoula International Choral Festival. In 1992 he was selected to sing in the Robert Shaw Choral Workshop and Performance of the Beethoven Missa Solemnis in Carnegie Hall. In 1997 he received a $25,000 National Milken Educator of the Year Award, and in 2004 his Hellgate Chevaliers were selected to perform at the Northwest Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Boise, Idaho. Dean was recognized by the National Federation of High Schools as the 20102011 Outstanding Music Educator for Montana and the Northwest region. In March 2011, he was named Missoula Arts Educator of the Year by the Missoula Cultural Council and he received the 2011 Distinguished Service Award for the Montana Music Educators Association. In March 2014, Dean was honored by the University of Montana in the annual Odyssey of the Stars. He is a member and past president of the Montana Choral Directors Association, a member of the Montana Music Educators Association, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Missoula International Choral Festival. He and his wife, Dorothy have been very active musically in Missoula for over 30 years and are the proud parents of two children: Ross and Elin.

PReSiDeNt’S MeSSaGe Jim Valeo As you know, we are in the middle of a Music Director search this year. Lots of work for everyone—our MSA Board, our search committee, our staff, our musicians having to adapt to a new Music Director each concert cycle, our Chorale being involved in several concerts with a broad variety of repertoire and you, our audiences, adapting to a new conductor each concert series and being asked to assist in the evaluation of each. Now, it’s Holiday Pops—familiar music, a familiar guest conductor, lots of lovely Chorale involvement, and no one has to evaluate anything or anyone—just plain enjoyment of what we love—symphonic music. As you also know, the costs of providing this entertainment product to you continue to increase. As this is also the season of giving, we provide you with several opportunities to give to your Missoula Symphony and Chorale. • You should have received our end of the year appeal letter. The appeal is one of our most important fundraising opportunities. Please be generous. • Our trip raffle ends after intermission at the Sunday evening concert when the winner will be selected. There are still some chances (although the number is limited) available in the rotunda until the end of Sunday evening’s intermission and there is even a cash machine to make participation easy. Take a chance on a trip you never even thought about doing—and one that could be the trip of a lifetime. • Finally, we have the encore auction at intermission in this concert. You get to vote for the encore of your choice for this concert. Board members have kicked off the auction by betting an average of $400 per person for their favorite choice. Lots of great music and lots of fun with wishes for a most happy Christmas and Holiday season to you all.

The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess ability that can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. Though the Suzuki method enables children to play music to a high standard, and many Suzuki-trained students have become highly acclaimed professional musicians, the training of professionals is not the aim: the emphasis throughout is on the development of the whole child. The goal is to develop a supportive community around our children – one in which parents and teachers work together to ensure that the full potential of every child is developed. ScHOLaRSHiP FuND Continuing the grand tradition of the Missoula Symphony Guild, the Missoula Symphony Scholarship Fund is dedicated to providing scholarships for outstanding University of Montana music students who play in the Missoula Symphony Orchestra or sing in the Missoula Symphony Chorale. This year, the Missoula Symphony Association will award a total of $6,500 in scholarships to five talented young musicians. This commitment is possible thanks to the generosity of the individuals listed below. Every penny of their donations goes directly to scholarships.
