The Woodlands – Kalispell, Montana By Rachel Crisp Philips The Woodlands, a neighborhood of independent-living condominiums for seniors over 55, will be the first development of its kind in Montana. Currently under construction in Kalispell, this new active adult community will consist of four separate resident buildings surrounding a common recreation area. Curtis Lund, the owner and developer of The Woodlands, has a long history of involvement within the Kalispell community. He spent four years working with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates®), before joining the local hospital board for eight years and serving as CEO for one year. “Over the last 24 years I’ve been very involved in the community here,” says Lund. “And one of the things that I became familiar with is what kinds of living conditions some people have. So I started thinking about solving some of the problems, and one thing led to another, and I decided that there was a need for adequate housing for people over 55.” A market research study supported Lund’s intuition, confirming that the Flathead Valley has more citizens over age 55 than average. Furthermore, the 55-and-up age group is growing at an annual rate of 3%, while those over 4
65 are increasing at 8%. With these numbers in mind, The Woodlands will contain 144 units (over 250 residents) by the time of its completion. “My experience living in a condominium was that my floor was my neighborhood, and if they didn’t see me for a few days they would knock on my door and say, ‘Are you okay?’ and I think that’s what’s going to happen here also,” says Lund. This neighborhood setting forms a natural sense of community among residents, while the condominium format allows for a focus on independent, rather than assisted, living. However,
assistance is always at hand whenever needed with 24/7 on-site staff, security, and management. The Woodlands is an ideal choice for couples who may no longer be able to take care of their own home due to age or health, but who have a desire to remain independent. It’s also a wise decision for those thinking ahead to plan for the future, or seniors who are seeking more social connections in their lives. “One of the barriers for recovery is living alone. And so I think that living in a community is very important for a person’s full physical and mental
mt55mag.com
health, says Lund. To help develop community at The Woodlands, a manager will be in on-hand to lead the formation of committees tailored to the needs and interests of the residents. For example, a library committee may help residents downsize their book collections, or a caring committee can provide relief for residents who are also caregivers. Several special features of The Woodlands are based on Lund’s previous experience working with condominiums. For one, the entire ground level is reserved for secure, heated parking with an elevator connecting to the lobby. This keeps residents safe from ice or other hazards, but also puts the first floor level at fifteen feet above ground. The elevated height adds both security and more scenic views to each unit. The site of The Woodlands is cen-
trally located, with traffic lights at the entrances for safe entry. Along the northern side of the property is a large commercial building, which provides a convenient sound barrier against any traffic noise. The land on the eastern boundary currently has a large natural pond, and is also partially owned by Lund. This portion will developed into a park, with winding walking paths and a dedication to maintaining green space. The rapidly flowing Spring Creek runs along on the southern border, attracting local wildlife to the site. Each two or three bedroom unit ranges from 1,088 to 1,474 square feet, has a private deck, and features an expanded living area with a sun room surrounded on three sides by large windows. There are 36 units in each of the four buildings, which are being constructed in phases with the first being ready for move-in on June 1, 2020.
In October 2020, a large commons area will be open for residents to enjoy. The 7,000-square-foot building will house a theater, an expansive library with fireplace, a fitness room, a coffee shop, and a sitting gallery featuring large windows with expansive views of the stunning Flathead scenery. The Woodlands sales office will also relocate to the commons from their current location in downtown Kalispell. The remaining three resident buildings will be completed in May 2021, May 2022, and October 2022. At this time, 80 of the 144 units have been presold and further reservations are being accepted for $1,000 down. MT55 The Woodlands can be reached at (406) 300-0444 for more information, or to arrange a tour. 2020

Golden Options Assisted Living and In-Home Care By Rachel Crisp Philips Golden Options Care has been providing in-home care and nonemergency transport services to Helena and the surrounding area for over three years. Last year, they opened their Golden Options Care Assisted Living facility, which has exceeded expectations with success founded on a sense of family. “My goal for the facility is to provide the best care available,” says Kris Miller, owner and operations manager. “I think we can always do better. They deserve better. They’ve worked hard their whole lives and now it’s time for them to relax and kind of get pampered,” he says. Both Miller and Nurse Administrator Theresa Conway operate Golden Options Care with a firm focus on this goal for a high standard of care. The close relationships they have formed with residents and their families reflect the homey atmosphere of the facility. “I think the biggest difference with our facility is that the owners are here every day. We sit and have meals with our residents; we sit, and talk. We individually go to them one-by-one almost every day, if not every day, just to see what their needs are and if there’s anything special they need,” says Miller. Located in the countryside, near a hill in a small valley, Golden Options Care Assisted Living has a little bit of everything that folks love to love about Montana. There are plenty of deer, with a flurry of new fawns to watch each spring, along with herds of grazing elk and other native wildlife. The quiet, rural setting sparkles with 6
bird song, and the scenery can’t be beat. On-site, the 10,000 square-foot facility contains 15 beds in a cozy
atmosphere that is comforting, and that never feels clinical. An in-house chef and other experienced staff help prepare nutritious home-cooked

meals throughout the day. Assistance is always on-hand for any need; from simple pleasures and small tasks, to organizing doctor appointments and helping residents with medical questions. The common areas at Golden Options Care Assisted Living have plenty of space for dining and other activities. Two sitting areas with televisions are available for residents to enjoy, and small groups often form to watch particular movie genres, sports, or other events. To stimulate individual interests and new experiences, many group activities
are organized among the residents themselves. Teatime is a regular treat, as well as visits from local school kids, guest musicians and day trips. With the city of Helena just 10 minutes from the facility, and Butte about an hour away, there are numerous opportunities to explore local communities and nearby events. As business grows for Golden Options Care, their cozy, family-style form of care will remain the hallmark of their service. Future plans include expanding in-home care services into the surrounding areas Butte, Bozeman, Great Falls, as well as the possibility of
adding another resident building to the Golden Options Care Assisted Living facility. “We want to be the one-stop shop, basically. We start taking care of you in your home, and when it comes to the point that you’re not safe to be at home we’ll transition you into our facility, and the same people are taking care of you from point A to point B.”

By Rachel Crisp Philips When the time comes to seek specialized care outside of the home, nothing is more important than the needs of the individual. Barry Melchior, the owner and operator of BeeHive Homes of Kalispell, takes this fact to heart, and home. At BeeHive, the focus is on listening to and serving the residents and their needs. “We have families complete a very detailed social questionnaire for each 8
resident so we can connect with them. That is the first step, connecting,” says Melchior. That commitment to individual connection is consistent throughout the day-to-day operations at BeeHive Homes. As owners and operators, Melchior and his wife, Billie Jo (a registered nurse for more than 20 years), are on-site themselves Monday through Friday to ensure that everything is functioning in the best possible capacity for each individual resident.
“We are accustomed to connecting with our residents, based on knowing them very well and knowing all areas of their life at different years of their life,” says Melchior. BeeHive Homes has recently doubled their capacity to care for seniors with the construction of a second 19-bed memory care facility in Kalispell. The new building includes the same amenities as the original, such as private rooms, 24-hour staffing, home-cooked meals, group association, individual and group activities, local
mt55mag.com
field trips, daily housekeeping, and laundry. A secure, expanded courtyard links the two residences. “We are a small setting,” says Melchior. “Each of our homes has a small 19-room setting, so we are able to focus in on those 19 residents to provide individualized care, with individualized social care as well.” With its focus on memory care, BeeHive Homes of Kalispell is dedicated to assisting residents who are experiencing a decline in mental ability. An individualized, personal experience is key to providing a supportive, healthy environment for care. Melchior says, “We specialize in caring for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia in all phases. So we are accustomed to working with residents who have memory issues, and residents who may be wandering or unsettled due to their Alzheimer’s and dementia.” Compassion is at the heart of the Melchior’s goal to help as many seniors as they can. With decades of experience working in long-term care, they have built a service to many seniors both for now and into the future. The facility also offers a drop-off adult daycare, where participants are encouraged to join in daily activities with the residents. MT55 BeeHive Homes of Kalispell is available to answer any questions, or to arrange a tour, by calling (406) 426-2166. The BeeHive Homes assisted-living franchise has over twenty independently-owned locations across the country.

BOOSTING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
By Rachel Crisp Philips The immune system is the body’s first response in defending itself against microscopic threats, such as viruses and bacteria. Everyday precautions such as washing hands and avoiding the sick will always remain crucial, but there are other steps that one can take to boost the immune system from within. 10
ACTIVITY Keeping active helps keep illness at bay by causing the body’s antibodies and white blood cells to increase their circulation around the body. This gives them more opportunities to detect and destroy anything harmful in the circulatory system. Activity also lowers stress hormones, which in turn increases overall health. Studies have shown that regular
mt55mag.com exercise, at least five days a week, can cut the risk of catching a cold in half and reduce the severity of symptoms when it is contracted. DIET The majority of the body’s immune system is in the gut, so when it’s off balance everything else is as well. Consuming plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats provides a large amount of vitamins and antioxidants to assist in fighting infections. Fermented foods, such as yogurt, miso, and sauerkraut help feed good bacteria in the gut and keep things running smoothly. On the other hand, too much meat or processed and fried foods can inflame the digestive system and reduce its ability to ward off bugs. Cooking with herbs such as garlic, ginger, oregano, rosemary, and turmeric can help protect the immune system as they all have anti-inflammatory properties. Many mediterranean and Indian recipes are full of nutritious vegetables and spices to inspire the palette and invigorate the immune system. STRESS Chronic stress and anxiety are strongly linked to overall health, as the produced stress hormones wreak havoc on the immune system. Aside from a negative chemical response in the body, people who are stressed are less likely to maintain healthy habits. Although it can be impossible to control what stressors appear throughout life, it is possible to control one’s reactions. Mindful meditation, exercise, journaling, and creating art are all activities that have been shown to reduce levels of stress hormones. SLEEP Getting plenty of quality sleep is crucial to maintaining a healthy immune system. When deprived of sleep, the body cranks out even more stress hormones and is unable to rest. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep every night to avoid falling ill due to exhaustion. SUPPLEMENT Eating a healthy, varied diet is enough for most people to get their necessary vitamins, but there are some supplements that can boost a body’s ability to prevent infection. For example, Vitamin D can aid the immune system, but some people don’t have enough in their systems. A doctor can order a blood test to best determine which vitamins or minerals may be deficient in one’s system, and will be able to follow up with recommendations for care. MT55

PLANNING AHEAD: RESPITE CHOICES By Rachel Crisp Philips To best prepare for the next stages of life, planning for care services well in advance can go a long way to provide peace of mind and well-being for the patient and their loved ones. With so many end-of-life decisions facing seniors, it’s necessary to discuss the patient’s wishes long before agerelated illnesses begin to take hold. RESPITE CARE For temporary relief, otherwise known as respite, to regular caregivers, respite care is a family home service that provides an option for short-term health assistance. A period of respite 12
care can be a much-needed break for family members that take on the caregiver role. After all, no one can give much to others when their own well has run dry. In essence, respite services cover anything that the primary caregiver would provide. These tasks may include routine hygiene, assisting with getting dressed, administration of medications, conducting therapeutic treatments, planning and preparing meals, shopping, and other aspects of caring for another person. As such, respite care is meant to serve as a complete replacement for the standard caregiver. With a need for individual attention,
respite care is customized to fit each unique patient. Some respite caregivers may even be trained in other treatments, such as physical therapy or management of medication, in order to expand the services they can offer. Additionally, respite services provide one-on-one attention and mental stimulation for the individual. Even in the short-term, a respite caregiver can provide conversation, outings, games, and other forms of social companionship. Another way to secure respite care is to look into Adult Day Care centers. These facilities offer a safe environment where the patient can interact with others who are in
mt55mag.com similar situations. For a social bonus, these centers frequently host musical and artistic activities, and may even provide transportation and meals. Just as any other absence from a job, respite must be planned in advance. It is typically a short-term service, lasting anywhere from a few hours a day to several weeks at a time. For assistance in taking care of loved ones during their final days, hospice care becomes the next step. HOSPICE CARE Unlike the short-term nature of respite care, hospice is an extensive, and ultimate, plan that assists patients facing a life-limiting illness or injury. These individuals have already reached a terminal stage in their diagnosis, typically when physicians determine a lack of available treatments or estimate six months or less left to live. At this point of declining health, the aim of hospice
is to keep the patient comfortable and retain quality of life for as long as remains. This focus on caring, not curing, is at the heart of the services that hospice care can provide. During hospice care, the patient’s primary caregiver coordinates with the hospice team on a ‘round-theclock care plan that focuses on pain management and symptom control. This hospice team usually consists of the individual’s physician, a hospice physician or medical director, nurses, home health aides, social workers, clergy or other counselors, trained volunteers, and physical therapists. When the time comes, the hospice team can also provide bereavement care to support the patient’s surviving family and friends. While hospice care provides endless medical support, the primary caregiver remains responsible for day-to-day care. When that caregiver must take time to care for themselves or other
Would You Give Your Keys to a Stranger?
loved ones, temporary respite care can be arranged to coordinate with the support that hospice care provides. CHOICES Whether it’s respite care, hospice care, or an eventual combination of both, these support services can take place either at home or in a professional facility. The patient’s desires, tempered with advice from their physician, should form the basis of all medical decisions. A care plan can be adjusted at any time, and there is no commitment to remain in hospice if situations change. A quick, local search for respite care or hospice care is the first step to forming an ideal care plan. Once a family can rest assured that their loved one is fully cared for, they can more thoroughly enjoy what really matters quality time with each other. MT55

home or other facility that provides light personal and custodial care to four or fewer disabled adults or aged persons who are not related to the owner or manager of the home by blood, marriage, or adoption or who are not under the full guardianship of the owner or manager.
Assisted Living Facility (ALF)
–a congregate residential setting that provides or coordinates personal care, scheduled and unscheduled 24-hour supervision and assistance, activities and health-related services.
Home Health Agency (HHA)
– a public agency or private organization that offers health services to individuals at home. Home health agencies must include the services of a licensed registered nurse and at least one other therapeutic service. Additional support services may also be available.
Hospice (HPC) – a coordinated program of home and inpatient health care that provides or coordinates palliative and supportive care to meet the needs of a terminally ill patient and the patient’s family. Caregivers help relieve the physical, psychological, spiritual, social and economic stresses experienced during the final stages of illness and dying. Practices are rooted in formal bereavement programs.
Independent Living (IL) - any housing
arrangement designed exclusively for seniors, generally those aged 55 and over. Housing varies widely, from apartment-style living to freestanding homes. Often, the units are designed to be senior-friendly, offering a more compact space with easier navigation and assistance with yard maintenance.
Long Term Care Facility (LTC) – a
facility that provides skilled nursing care, intermediate nursing care, or personal care, to a total of two or more individuals.
Dementia Management Programs
that offer any of a variety of therapeutic approaches which are intended to maximize the existing cognitive functioning of people who have Alzheimer’s disease, Pick’s disease or other forms of cognitive impairment. Interventions include structured activities and exercises that are designed for people who have a short attention span and require extra verbal and visual stimulation with the objective of enhancing the individual’s perception of the environment, promoting trust, reducing anxiety, avoiding overstimulation and maximizing communication skills.

Memory Care (MEM) – a facility that
provides care services and programs for residents suffering from memory loss due to stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or other diagnosed dementia.
Retirement Home (RTH) – a building
or buildings in which separate living accommodations are rented or leased to elderly persons for use as their primary residence.
Respite Care (RC) – a service that provides
temporary relief periods and other stress-relieving support for family members who provide continuous care for developmentally disabled relatives at home.
In Home Respite Care
Programs that provide a brief period of rest or relief for family members, guardians or others who are regular caregivers for children and/or dependent adults by offering temporary or intermittent care for the individual(s) in their own home.
Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) – the
provision of nursing care services, health-related services, and social services under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse on a 24-hour basis.
Types of Independent Living: • Subsidized senior housing. The U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) subsidizes senior housing complexes for low income seniors. Waiting lists are common, so it is essential to plan ahead for this option.
• Senior apartments. Apartment complexes
restricted by age, usually 55+. Rent may include community services such as recreational programs, transportation services, and meals served in a communal dining room.
• Retirement communities. Groups of
housing units for those aged 55+. These housing units might be single family homes, duplexes, mobile homes, townhouses, or condominiums. Monthly fees may cover services such as outside maintenance, recreation centers or clubhouses.
• Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs). CCRCs offer service and housing packages that allow access to independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing facilities in one community. If residents begin to need help with activities of daily living, for example, they can transfer to an assisted living or skilled nursing facility on the same site.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES By Rachel Crisp Philips It can be hard to recognize, and even more difficult to admit, when the time comes to make major lifestyle changes due to age. Although it is always best to consult with a trusted medical professional on any healthcare decision, there are some signs that one can look for themselves to help identify a need for further assistance. CHANGES IN EATING HABITS Drastic changes in appetite or weight are always a cause for concern, but especially if it affects overall nutrition and day-to-day energy levels. Take stock of the pantry and observe what habits may have changed recently, what items are being consumed the most (or least). It can help to keep a diary of meals and snacks, and water consumption, throughout the day in order to more easily identify patterns and variations. HOUSE IN DISARRAY If dirt and clutter are becoming so commonplace as to be unmanageable, it might be time to ask for help. Sometimes a pair of fresh eyes, and strong hands, can be all it takes to transform a living space into a more comfortable and accessible abode. Be mindful of potential tripping hazards, such as loose cords or random items on the floor, as these can be the cause of a serious accident. UNPAID BILLS PILING UP Although everyone makes a mistake or late payment once in a while, a considerable pile of unpaid bills could be a sign of more than financial distress. Perhaps the early stages of memory loss or dementia make it difficult to keep on top of things, or maybe an undiagnosed anxiety disorder is the source. Regardless of cause, it’s always wise to ask for help sooner than later when it comes to avoiding late fees or other negative financial consequences.
PERSONAL HYGIENE There’s no reason to let bathing become a burden when it doesn’t have to be. If it’s getting too difficult to maneuver, there are many attachments and devices that can turn a regular showerhead into an easily manageable, hand-held spray. If slipping is a concern, shower chairs and wall handles are a good option for added stability. Electric toothbrushes can take the work, and hand pain, out of regular brushing. But, there may come a time when personal assistance is needed more than personal devices. UNSAFE TO DRIVE Driving can be a complicated freedom to relinquish, but everyone is safest when we respect our own limitations. If vision is becoming cloudy, blurry, unreliable, or if night vision is steadily decreasing, consider letting someone else get behind the wheel. As we age, it’s important to schedule regular eye exams not only to protect vision, but in order to detect signs of other potential health issues as well. SIGNS OF DEPRESSION If there seem to be more bad days than good ones, or it no longer feels like there’s much to look forward to, please consider talking to a mental health professional about these feelings. Perhaps it seems pointless to get out of bed, or else insomnia strikes with relentless regularity. Maybe hobbies no longer bring happiness, or there is no longer solace within solitude. There is nothing wrong with admitting how we feel inside, and doing so often brings relief. FRIENDS & FAMILY The ones who know us best are best equipped to provide the most honest feedback. If there’s ever any doubt to one’s health and well-being, ask loved ones to be honest with you and to give feedback on anything they find concerning. Be receptive, and open to their side of the story, for it may provide insights that are invisible from a personal perspective. 2020 19

resident Linda with CNA Tom
The staff was right here to help when I fell. They take me to my doctor appointments and stay to help me with follow up care. We have games, movie nights and music. I have privacy in my own room and can also invite people in. I am friends with other residents. We have birthday parties, and holiday barbecues. The staff is our extended family, they pay close attention and are very caring.

MONTANA FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED
resident George with Nurse Administrator Theresa and Operations Manager Kris
The Golden Options is my family! They help with doctors and clinics. We have our meals with other residents, celebrate holidays and have activities together. I feel at home sitting at the patio or looking out my window watching wildlife and hearing the birds, yet we’re so close to Helena. The owners went out of their way to help me get my new leg. I love the rides Kris takes me on, seeing the rivers and lakes makes me feel young again. They are all so professional.
