introduction Is independent living becoming more of a challenge for you, or someone you care about? Maybe its little things like regular cleaning or bills piling up. When you open the fridge, are there fewer healthy choices? Lifestyle needs can change quickly or gradually, creating a different scenario from the past. In the Montana 55 Annual Senior Housing Guide 2021 issue, we provide a variety of resources and information to help make decisions during life-changing times. We give guidance on how to deter-

mine if more care is needed, the tools to live independently at home, a list of every state-licensed senior living facility by city and the types of care they offer. The types of care are also defined, so it’s easier to figure out which housing facilities will work best for your needs. There’s also information on the state’s three veteran’s homes, nursing home Medicaid assistance, Montana’s State and Regional Ombudsmen, and Montana’s 10 Area Agencies on Aging. We have resources to help navi-

gate the difference between Home Care and Home Health, as well as tips on how to stay healthy and fit at home. Features include an overview of BeeHive Homes of Butte, as well as WEL-Life Assisted Living at Kalispell. There are tips to prepare for cognitive decline, and a guide to creating an ironclad will. We appreciate and welcome your feedback to continue to make this a unique and valuable resource. Please contact us if you would like additional copies of this publication.

HOME CARE & HOME HEALTH Rachel Crisp Philips

W

hen it comes time to find home health assistance, a solid plan for quality care is invaluable in order to sustain independence at home. Home health and home care are two distinct types of medical care that take place in the patient’s home. The distinction lies in that 'home health' is clinical care provided by a skilled medical professional, while 'home care' refers to aid from a nonclinical caregiver. Often originating as part of a care plan following a hospital stay, home-based care giving plans can be adjusted to provide what is best for each patient’s overall health and comfort. Learning the details and differences be-

8

tween these two caregiver options is a vital step to take well in advance of any serious decline in health.

HOME HEALTH The phrase ‘home health’ refers to a wide range of health and social services that take place in a patient’s home. These services can range from administration of medications and injections, wound care, physical therapy sessions, medical tests, monitoring of health status, speech-language pathology services, one-on-one care from a registered nurse, or any number of other treatments provided by skilled medical professionals.

mt55mag.com After an inpatient hospitalization, rehabilitation, or stay at a skilled nursing facility, home health treatments may smooth the transition back to life at home. A home health treatment plan may also be prescribed after a change in medication occurs. This is usually done to ensure the effectiveness of new medications and to monitor for any side effects. Another instance where home health may be the best option is when seniors begin to exhibit an overall decline in function. In this case, a home health professional can use therapy or teach new skills so that the patient can achieve further independence.

HOME CARE When the skills of medical professionals are not required for a care plan, the term ‘home care’ is used. In contrast to home health, home care is classified as personal, or companion, care. This means that it is considered ‘non-clinical’ or ‘unskilled’; although skill is certainly necessary. It describes the services provided by caregivers, also known as home care aides. These professionals are trained to assist seniors with daily living, to understand the details of senior care, and to dole out doses of friendly companionship. In addition to giving care that targets the individual’s specific needs, a home care worker can assist with housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation, house cleaning, and other household tasks. They are also able to help dress and bathe, remind about medications, pay bills, and be present for companionship - reducing the risk of social isolation.

While home care and home health are both excellent options to aid an individual in their return from the hospital, there’s no need to commit to any one method of assistance. Care plans such as these are flexible, and are intended to be altered as medical conditions and life events change. Sometimes, in order to achieve the best possible care, a family may choose to combine care services for their loved one. For example, home health staff can address medical concerns and provide rehabilitation or therapy treatment, while at the same time a home care aide maintains running the household and providing all other, non-clinical, assistance. Whatever direction the patient ultimately takes, learning about the options can provide both them and their loved ones with the certainty that they’ve done everything in their power to provide the best possible care and easiest transition. anelle Hildreth and Aaron Hildreth were inspired to provide quality assisted living care in a home-like setting when they decided to become the owners of BeeHive Homes of Butte. With caregivers and elderly care services committed to the complete health of each resident, their facility is a comfort to seniors. “The purpose behind 10

these residential type settings is to offer a more homelike option for the residents, when they no longer have the choice to stay in their own home. And it just hit us, in our hearts. We spoke for a couple hours, and we looked at each other and we literally said; it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when we want it. It sounds like a rewarding path to take,” says Hildreth, who is also a Registered Nurse. To maintain indepen-

dence, each resident has a private room and bathroom with an ADA shower. BeeHive Homes of Butte also features 24-hour staffing, dietitian-approved homecooked meals, group interaction and activities, daily laundry, and housekeeping services. Their unique approach to assisted living care is designed to give each individual resident more time and assistance with their care needs. “We’re locally owned and

operated, the owners are right here in town available to make sure that things are going well,” says Hildreth. “I think people appreciate that. It's very personal, and they know that we care,” she says. “Our residents’ families really appreciate our homelike setting when families move in. Our goal is to make the resident and the families feel like family,” Hildreth says. Mealtime at BeeHive Homes of Butte helps to fos-

ter that sense of family, with fully home-cooked meals made from local ingredients and approved by the resident’s dietician. Suggestions of favorite meals are welcomed, and integrated into meal plans. However, meals remain flexible, and residents are encouraged to follow their preferences. “We always say; if they want to do it at home, what's stopping them from doing it in our homes? This is their home still,” says Hildreth. BeeHive Homes of Butte also features an abundant activities program. There are local outings such as going out for ice cream or to a restaurant, as well as crafts and games. The activities director, resident council, and staff members encourage residents to communicate their wants as well. “The activities director

meets with the residents monthly and the resident council and tries to figure out what kind of games and crafts and activities they’d like to do the next month, or what they want to try differently,” Hildreth says. “It’s very personal. Their voices are heard because every voice counts, because we're small enough we can do that,” says Hildreth. Some of the long-time traditions at BeeHive Homes of Butte include events that bring families into the homes, to recapture that feeling of ‘going to grandma’s house’. Community connection is crucial to BeeHive Homes of Butte, and as visitations resume, everyone looks forward to big annual events such as a Mother’s Day Tea Party, Father’s Day Brunch, Fire Department Thank-You

Breakfast, holiday celebrations, and a big summer barbeque in August that includes a bouncy house and musical performers. However, none of the success of BeeHive Homes of Butte could be possible without the caring souls of the caregiving staff. At BeeHive, the staff is more than just employees, they are part of the family. “I care just as much about my employees’ happiness as I do my residents’ happiness,” says Hildreth. “I remind them, this is a service that you're giving to people who sometimes are in a situation where they can't say thank you, and they can't tell you, ‘thank you’, but I promise you if they could they would. They're grateful for these workers who come in and do such a selfless service

to help people who need it when they can't do it themselves,” Hildreth says. Moving forward, together, BeeHive Homes of Butte is excited to announce that they are currently building a fourth home in Butte. The new, 19-bed facility will embrace the home-like atmosphere that BeeHive Homes is known for, all in a modern building with updated features to better serve the residents. Even with new paths on the horizon, the destination remains the same. To serve the residents, and the community, as a family - with love. “I’ll use the words of one of our residents who I think said it best. She said, ‘You can't explain it, it's just a feeling. It's a feeling of love,” says Hildreth. MT55 2021

Learning Chair Yoga Looking for a unique way to stay in shape? How about yoga?
The American Osteopathic Association states that yoga is a relevant exercise that builds strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and body. However, for seniors with limited mobility, many of the movements can be dangerous or impossible. Fortu-nately, fitness experts developed a form of workout conducted from the safety of a chair. Chair yoga is an excellent way for older Americans to gain many of the traditional style’s same health benefits. In addition to pain manage12

ment, the exercises stretch muscles, lowers blood pressure, improves circulation and reduce stress and anxiety. One factor to keep in mind is that your yoga routine should not cause pain or discomfort. If you find yourself unable to reach the range of motion as recommended, complete the movement only to where you are comfortable. As you improve your flexibility, these motions will become easier to achieve. Check out how to gain the health benefits from your living room with these impactful workouts.

Seated Mountain

This pose will engage your core but requires perfect posture and a focus on breathing. First, take a deep breath while sitting up straight and extending your spine. You want to keep your legs at a 90-degree angle, with your knees directly over your ankle. As you exhale, push down in the chair with the lowest part of your tailbone and roll your shoulders down your back. Suck your stomach in while breathing out and lift your toes to firmly drive the four corners of your feet into the floor.

Eagle Arms

If you suffer from sore joints, this exercise is a great way to create relaxation as it stabilizes your shoulders. From your chair, stretch your arms out to your sides as you inhale. While you breathe out, bring them in front of you and swing your right arm under your left. Grab your shoulders to mimic that you’re hugging yourself. Next, lift your elbows higher and exhale. Then, roll your shoulders down, relaxing them away from your ears and take a few breaths while holding this pose.

Finding Fitness Motivation You probably already know about the numerous benefits that exercise produces for both the mind and body. Still, while some people want to get involved in a physical regimen, finding the motivation to continue can prove challenging. It’s crucial to keep yourself active, especially as you age, even if it’s difficult to find the energy to fit in a workout. One way to remain engaged is to track your progress and share it with your peers. Use smart device apps to log your meals, exercise routines and weight loss successes. As you navigate the path to better physical fit-ness, set goals and celebrate milestones by

treating yourself to trips or coveted items. Follow these tips from the National Institute on Aging to get motivated and keep moving.

Make Exercise Fun

Sticking to a dedicated routine with the same exercises will get tiresome after a few attempts. Make it your commitment to keeping your workouts fresh while sprinkling in some fun during the action. For instance, switch up the types of movements you do and on what days. Don’t forget to incorporate the four essential categories for seniors — endurance, strength, balance and flexibility.

You can also try to get your family involved in your commitment to better fitness. Invite your children, friends and grandchildren for walks, swimming lessons, jumping rope or playing catch. Applying your loved ones cre-ates a wholesome way to enjoy spending time together while benefitting your health.

Incorporate Exercise into Your Daily Routine

You don’t need a gym or dedicated time set aside to make room for exercise in your schedule. Instead, think of your daily routine. Are there instances where you can include physical fitness

into your plans? If you walk your dog, consider picking up the pace by speed walking, jogging or simply extending the amount of time you enjoy the activity. When visiting the grocery store, park far away from the entrance for extra cardio and a little strength training when you push the loaded cart back to your car.

Invest in Yourself

Treat yourself to new workout clothes, exercise gadgets or equipment once you reach a fitness milestone. You will look forward to trying out your new belongings the next time you work out.

• Senior apartments. Apartment complexes

restricted by age, usually 55+. Rent may include community services such as recreational programs, transportation services, and meals served in a communal dining room.

• Retirement communities. Groups of

housing units for those aged 55+. These housing units might be single family homes, duplexes, mobile homes, townhouses, or condominiums. Monthly fees may cover services such as outside maintenance, recreation centers or clubhouses.

• Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs). CCRCs offer service and housing packages that allow access to independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing facilities in one community. prepare for Cognitive decline M

any uncertainties arise in life; however, one instance that should be expected is age-related cognitive decline. According to the National Endowment for Financial Education, some Americans begin losing the capacity to make financial decisions around age 60. It’s also more common for older adults to face severe health conditions like strokes or Alzheimer’s, which can significantly reduce the ability to make essential decisions. Prepare for the expected by getting your financial ducks in a row. Meet with an adviser to discuss creating a last will and choosing a power of attorney. In best-case scenarios, your mental health will remain vital. Still, strategically planning can make managing your fiscal matters more straightforward for your family members.

Check out some tips to prepare yourself and your loved ones if you become unable to communicate your financial wishes.

riage, the birth of a new child or a loved one’s death may require tweaks to your document. Ensure your estate plan

KEEp dOCuMENTS updATEd After drafting your last will and testament, it’s essential to keep it updated as life circumstances change. For instance, events like divorce, mar-

includes those coming into your life and excluding people you no longer deemed eligible. It would be best if you also considered adjusting as you purchase new homes, land or automo-

biles. With a direct expectation of how you should distribute your belongings, family members can begin the grieving process without additional stress. STAY ON TOp OF FINANCIAL LITERACY While combatting cognitive decline isn’t always possible, you can challenge your mental health by vigorously educating yourself on financial documents. An excellent place to start is visiting your local library and reviewing books that advise on money saving strategies or investment tactics. Make it a group affair by discussing these topics with others in your age group to receive essential social benefits. You can also find educational resources from your credit union or financial institution. Take advantage of free workshops or seminars that they offer.
