Are these innocuous occurrences, or signs that you or a loved one might need some type of assistance? Many of us in our 50s and 60s are facing this important question. Determining if assistance is warranted–not to mention what type–can be perplexing. Some of us have the luxury to ponder this question for years, while others may have to make a quick decision after a crisis. Seniors’ desires and needs vary widely. For some, a senior apartment complex offers the opportunity for a lively social life. Others may plan to stay in their current residence, which might require home improvements and home healthcare. For those with serious health issues, skilled nursing and 24-hour care may be the best option. Reading through Montana 55’s Annual Housing Guide will help you understand the various types of care, introduce

you to the numerous facilities across our great state, and share with you a number of helpful resources available. You’ll find intriguing stories, too. Read up on the most recent residences to open in Montana: BeeHive Homes in Kalispell and Westhills Assisted Living Home in Hamilton. Find out about the trend from the Midwest that’s poised to break into Missoula. Called “senior cooperative housing,” this new concept offers residents the chance to own and govern their community. Equally exciting is the news that Hestia In-Home Support, based in Missoula, provides inhome care that’s less expensive than the cost of care in an assisted living facility. Their particular model is the first of its kind in the nation. In line with staying at home, we’ve asked contractors from around the state to share their ideas on how to make a home senior-friendly. If you are at the stage for considering a home with wheels, learn how technology

makes hitting the open road in an RV more appealing than ever. We round out this issue with reader-interest stories on an inspirational volunteer, joint health, and real estate advice from Joy Earls. Additional issues of Montana 55 will publish in July, October and January. In these issues, look for ideas on quality senior living including getaways, financial planning, health care, and aging with success. We appreciate and welcome your ongoing feedback to continue to make this a unique and valuable resource. For additional copies for yourself or to distribute, contact Jacque or Holly. V OTING IS A RIGHT WE ALL SHARE In Montana, having a disability is not a barrier to exercising your right to vote. If you’re a person with a disability, the State of Montana offers a variety of ways to vote independently and privately.

Electronic Ballot Request System

AutoMARK Specialized Voting Machine

With this brand new system, Montanans with disabilities can apply online to receive a ballot electronically, allowing them to vote from the comfort of their home. The ballot can then be printed and returned by mail or in person to the county election office during the absentee voting period and must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Every polling place in Montana has at least one specialized voting machine called an AutoMARK. The AutoMARK is a ballot-marking system that provides privacy and accessibility to voters who are blind, vision impaired, or have a condition that makes it difficult or impossible to mark a ballot in the usual way.

Chelsea Davis for Montana 55

The new 19-bed memory care home opened Feb. 10. It’s owned by Josh and Jessi Burlage, who moved to Kalispell after selling BeeHive Homes in Columbia Falls. This particular home is different from other assisted living facilities, Josh said, because it specifically caters to those suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s.

8

It’s a secure facility set on 8.5 acres. Each resident has a private room with its own bathroom. Housekeeping is provided for the residents, including laundry. Rooms are furnished for those residents who don’t bring their own furnishings. Caregivers are available 24 hours a day, and there are individual and group activities for the residents. It feels like home, Josh said. “That’s what defines us, is it’s set up like a home,” he said. “It has an open-kitchen concept, with the smells coming out into the home. My wife and I buy all the groceries …

montana55.com so it’s just like a big home.” The Burlages ran the two BeeHive assisted living homes in Columbia Falls for five years, and sold them about a year and a half ago. “It was always kind of in our thoughts to expand down here,” Josh said. “It probably wouldn’t have happened as fast as it did, but some people approached us about getting involved in BeeHive, which is a franchise. “We had moved out from Wisconsin almost eight years ago to build in Kalispell. That was our original goal but we had struggled to find a place in Kalispell, so that’s how we settled in Columbia Falls in the first place. But we didn’t want to give up the Kalispell market.” Jessi got her associate degree in science from Northeast Iowa Community College and is a registered nurse. Josh previously owned a landscaping and rental home business. But after seeing his grandfather die in a nursing home, he wanted to do more. The acreage also means they have room to expand. The goal is to one day create a “senior campus,” which will include the memory care home, two 16bed assisted living facilities and four independent cottages. “That’s to create a continuum on the same

property,” Josh said. “Every senior who comes on the property will have an option for them.” The home is about half full. To set up a tour, call 406-426-2166. “We’re really excited to be down here in Kalispell and to have residents in our care again,” he said. “We went about 18 months not having that and we missed being around seniors. They’re a great population of people, they have great stories … so it’s cool to create an environment they can come to live. “That’s our goal, is to have a fun, healthy, happy environment in order for them to live out the remainder of their years in quality.”

Providing residents with privacy in a home environment is the goal of a new assisted living home in Hamilton.

10

Alina Goman is the owner and administrator of the Westhills Assisted Living Home a beautiful 6,000 square foot home, her husband, Gabriel, built near Blodgett Canyon in Hamilton. The couple hosted an open house March 12. “I want the residents to have a fulfilling life here,” Alina Goman said. “I want them to have life-enriching activities like gardening, clubs and groups.” The couple came from Romania, Gabriel in 1984, and Alina in 2000. They lived in Seattle for 15 years. Alina Goman said she worked in care giving and operating a long-term care facility for seniors by helping her in-laws with their assisted living facility. She worked as a contracted individual care provider for the Washington State Department

of Social and Health Services for 11 years, from 2001 to 2012, and owned her own assisted living home for three years in Lynnwood, Washington from 2006 to 2009. She also worked as a release resident manager and care provider for numerous Adult Family Homes. The couple decided they wanted to move from Washington and searched for better schools and opportunities for their three children. Gabriel Goman said he designed the beautiful home for eight residents meeting all ADA requirements. “People want their privacy,” Gabriel Goman said. “They have been autonomous their whole lives and the last thing they want to do is lose it at the end of their lives. So if you give them privacy but in a home environment where there’s a family around it really works out.” At Westhills Assisted Living Home, each 250300 square foot bedroom is unique with its own closet, call center, communication system, space for a television, high-speed Internet, sprinkler system, 20 Amp electrical wiring to support medical devices, and most have a fireplace, private bathroom with a walk in shower, and private

montana55.com entrance with a patio or deck. The community spaces on each floor include a home theatre, a central room, a dining room and laundry facilities. The large room upstairs has a beautiful view of the Bitterroot Valley and an electronic keyboard that Gabriel Goman plays beautifully. “If people want, we can furnish their room for them, but most people like to bring their own furnishings,” Alina Goman said. There are beautiful grounds with a garden and a creek that runs most of the year. Alina Goman said they plan to build a gazebo and raised garden beds for the residents. The care giving portion of the facility will include a caring family on-site, a registered nurse with over 30 years of experience, a doctor on call, and the home is in close proximity to the hospital. Alina Goman said she is more than a business owner. “I do every aspect and bring extensive experience. I am a licensed care giver and special manager of mental health and dementia training,” Alina Goman said. “At the end of 2000, my dad had a stroke and it was a life changing moment for me. It is a challenging job and I did not think it would be a career but after seeing my dad it was so comforting for me to provide care for other people.” Alina Goman said at that moment, providing care

became more than a job. “I take care of each person the way I would take care of my dad,” she said. “It is very emotional for me. Every resident that I have is someone’s father. I think you need a heart to go into this job. I want to help residents use their strengths and interests, be as independent as possible, and have something to do with a purpose.” The new care facility serves residents needing light care, officially category A. It can have up to five residents needing more care and skilled nursing care, category B. There are plans to add a category C endorsement in the very near future for residents with severe cognitive and memory impairment. The Westhills Assisted Living Home has a very large kitchen. Alina Goman handles the cooking. “I like food and I think good food is very important,” Alina Goman said. “I can accommodate any diet but it also has to be quality of life. I want the food to be greattasting.” Gabriel Goman said he believes they will be successful because they are committed. “You’ve got to do this the right way. You have to pay attention and you have to be there,” he said. “It is a hands-on experience. People feel the love and connect right away. We feel really blessed to be out here.” The Westhills Assisted Living Home is located at 121 West Hills Way in Hamilton.

cooperative living

TOMmy Martino, Montana 55

Former Missoula County Commissioner Bill Carey (also on cover) is attempting to build a senior cooperative housing project in Missoula.

B

DILLON KATO Montana 55

Bill Carey is continuing to work on bringing a new option for senior housing to Missoula. He thinks the rest of the state could benefit from the idea as well.

The former Missoula county commissioner has organized a group of

interested professionals from a variety of housingrelated industries in an attempt to build a senior cooperative housing project in the city. The cooperative would serve as a great housing solution for older individuals looking for something between home ownership and a nursing home, Carey said. The U.S. Census Bureau is projecting that by the year 2030, more than 20 percent of the country will be age 65 or older. Specifically in Montana, the AARP is predicting more than a quarter of the state’s residents will be in that age range 15 years from now. Carey said there are many seniors reaching an age where they want to stay active, but don’t necessarily want all the hassle, maintenance and upkeep that comes with owning a home. “I’m in that demographic, at that point where I don’t want to always be mowing the lawn or whatever,” Carey said.

Although senior cooperative housing projects can be established in many different ways, what Carey envisions is that the project will be a not-for-profit organization run by a board of directors, and the residents would own the housing communally. Every resident would put forward a down payment to buy into the housing, then pay a portion of the overall mortgage that would be shared between everyone who lives there. Last spring, Carey brought Dennis Johnson, a senior cooperative housing expert from the Twin Cities, to Missoula for a presentation about the possibility of building one in the city. Costs could be kept low by capping the amount of equity a resident can gain, so when a person moves out potential new inhabitants would be able to afford to buy in while still allowing retirees to recover their investment, unlike an apartment or retirement community, Carey said. “They’re protecting their nest egg when they buy into a cooperative,” he said. “I mean why not have

some ownership, why not have some control?” The group Carey has assembled in Missoula, including a realtor and developer interested in the concept, are now conferring with Johnson to determine how best to proceed.

One of the issues in front of the group is initial funding and financing for the project. Carey said one solution could be using a special senior housing loan from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Carey said senior cooperative housing projects are far more common in the Midwest, with more than 60 in the Twin Cities-area alone, but the trend hasn’t made its way westward. While he is focusing his efforts in Missoula, Carey said if the benefits of the projects can be demonstrated to seniors, he thinks other Montana cities will also show interest. “In Missoula at least, there’s no place to be able to take people and walk them through to show what this could be,” he said. “But it’s such a good idea it’s going to happen someday.” Joy Earls, a Missoula real estate agent, said she thinks the city is “primed for senior cooperatives.” Earls had attended the original meeting with Johnson and had written columns in the Missoulian about the possibility of the projects. She said she received positive feedback from seniors in the area who are interested. “I would say that it’s a specialty area that appeals to a specific kind of person,” she said. While she knows the project that Carey wants to build would be designed to keep costs low, Earls said cooperative housing projects could potentially take any form the residents wanted, with different projects tailored to fit different needs or income levels. “It could really be whatever would be in the articles of cooperation when it was founded, although the people that I’ve talked to about it have been especially interested in the idea of keeping it affordable,” Earls said. in-home care

TOM BAUER, Montana 55

Maurika Moore, CEO of Hestia In-Home Support, says the company can provide a wide range of services for people in their homes, from medical and personal care to help with daily chores. Moore says the company is a new model that helps people stay in their homes rather than move into an assisted living facility.

F

David Erickson Montana 55

For Maurika Moore, the CEO of Hestia In-Home Support of Missoula, the goal is to allow elderly people to live at home – where they’re comfortable - while they receive the medical care and other support that they need, all without breaking the bank. It’s an idea that goes against the traditional way of thinking. Many families believe that inhome care is far too expensive or far less comprehensive than assisted living. Moore aims to change that.

14

montana55.com

I have seen a great deal of success in hospice specifically, because it’s a whole team. It’s not just one person providing care for somebody. – Maurika Moore, Hestia in-home support of missoula

Hestia (the ancient Greek goddess of the home) is a physician-led, locally owned for-profit practice that works with a full interdisciplinary team to provide in-home services patients who are mostly in their 80s and 90s who don’t want to move to an assistedliving facility but who don’t need hospice care. The company works with nurses, massage therapists, physical therapists, a dental hygienist, a life coach and more to visit patients in their home. Moore has a background in hospice care and modeled her business off that. “I have seen a great deal of success in hospice specifically, because it’s a whole team,” she said. “It’s not just one person providing care for somebody. And it’s physician-led so you have a lot more flexibility about what you can do. So I just took the same idea of a hospice team and packed out things like medical equipment and medication and homecare supplies. And when people get Hestia they can use their Medicare benefits for those types of things. Their drugs are covered and all those other things are still covered. But the care in the home by the team is something that is private-pay then, just like everything else. Just like assisted-living. But then we can do it at home, rather than someone having to move. So it’s a really exciting thing and it’s really new.” Moore said there isn’t a model quite like Hestia in Missoula or anywhere else in the nation. “Hestia isn’t like any health care company in the nation, and we really launched it to meet a specific need,” she said. “We sort of want Missoula to get behind this movement because it starts in Missoula and a lot of great companies have. And so it’s exciting to me to get our community around something like that, that we need nationwide.” If people don’t want to move to an assisted living facility, her team will help them stay at home. “Nobody is doing that,” she said. “And so we’ve seen such great success for families that are able to stay in their homes and get the care that they’ve wanted.” Many people believe that they can’t afford having a physician come to their home. “We are less expensive than assisted living,” Moore

said. “We are less expensive than any other option at that time, and you don’t have to move. It’s a sustainable model, and hospice has already proved that. Yes, we are first-class care, but on a budget. The most exciting part for us is we can provide all these services.” The company opened its doors last November and held a ribbon-cutting for their office at 2230 27th Ave. this past February. “Our goal is to help you live independently in your home, wherever that is,” said community outreach director Stephanie Depew. “We aim to deliver meaningful care and peace-of-mind into your home and to honor your care choices with respect, compassion, and 24-hour medical accessibility. Your imagination is the limit as to what types of service we can provide.”

renovate for golden years

C

Stacie Duce for Montana 55

Contractors in Montana offered the following suggestions for transitioning a home to match the needs or wants of senior living: CABINETRY

Wendy Bauder of B&B Cabinetry Design Company in Hamilton has worked with many seniors to redesign kitchens and bathrooms to meet new needs and preferences. “We recently designed a kitchen for a customer – a sweet woman who was fivefoot-nothing and wanted a place in her kitchen to roll out her dough at the right height, so we built an island in her kitchen with no toe kick which made the whole thing four-and-a-half inches shorter. It was perfect for her,” she said. Bauder said if a family has senior living and limited mobility in mind, then she recommends roll-outs and pull-out cabinets and drawers so that the essential kitchen items can be accessed down low in an efficient manner. “As far as cabinet height, it’s silly to require you to get on a ladder to get anything,” she said. “I love deep, pull-out drawers where you can see everything and reach everything you use daily.” On the other hand, when it comes to bathroom vanities, Bauder said her company has been raising the cabinets for seniors so they don’t have to bend down as far. “Normal vanity height is 33 inches, but we often build them ‘base’ height, which is 36-inches tall. Those extra inches make a big difference for some people,” she said.

DOORWAYS

“Eventually, wheelchairs might come into play, so those thinking about

16

montana55.com renovations need to seriously think about doorways,” Bauder said. If the space allows, turning one door into French doors or even taking the door off altogether and enlarging the opening might be the best way to prepare for convenient mobility. Other contractors recommend having every interior room door the same standard three-foot width as the exterior doors. Many recommend changing round doorknobs to levers, which are easier to open for seniors. A low threshold on door seals also reduces the potential for trips and falls.

STAIRS AND HANDRAILS

Contractors recommend seniors live in a singlestory dwelling with no stairs or minimal stairs. Paul Beck of Beck Construction recently remodeled a home for a couple in their 80s where the 1980s staircases made 90-degree turns. The triangular steps on the curves had become a hazard. He changed the staircase to descend straight with wide steps, new handrails and night lights along the stairs. “It made all the difference for their safety,” he said. “I recently had an 89-year-old tell me that I needed to stop installing wide handrails because they were hard for him to grip,” he said. “They may look cool, but it’s much easier for someone to wrap their whole

hand around a one-and-a-quarter inch round rail.” Beck recently built a home with no stairs or steps – including at the door to the garage. “We sloped the concrete up to meet the door so that they could walk in and out without a step.”

GARAGE

Beck said installing automatic garage door openers might be commonplace now for most homeowners, but they are essential for seniors. He said seniors might need to evaluate door systems on older homes and consider replacements of new, lighter doors with smoother tracks. He said another fun choice in a garage for pet owners is to have a waist-high pet shower where seniors can wash their dogs with significantly less risk that’s associated with wet surfaces and bending down to handle a pet.

PLUMBING

“As you get older, not everyone can step over the edge of a tub very well and might lose their balance,” said Erik Abrahamsen, who owns Erik’s Plumbing and Heating in Darby. He said if seniors aren’t investing in an extensive bathroom renovation, they should at least think about installing grab bars.

Let’s talk about it! One out of every five older adults falls victim to financial exploitation. It has no limits as to who it affects...it could even happen to you! Join other Montanans in the fight against this growing problem. Let’s face it and take a stand against senior financial fraud!

17

Abrahamsen also suggested the simple improvement of replacing regular toilets with a comfort height, which are two inches taller. Abrahamsen and his son have also been installing more walk-in tubs than in the past. And they are seeing people chose to build showers without a lip for unencumbered walking or rolling into the shower. He said customizing a bathroom is a great idea because “everybody has different tastes and preferences and ideas of what will work for them.”

HEATING

“Everybody likes to have things warm,” Abrahamsen said. “But seniors need to consider the hardship of chopping wood when you get older for a wood burning stove. If people are thinking about renovations, they might consider replacing a wood stove with a gas stove so that they don’t have to worry about wood.”

APPLIANCES

When choosing appliances and where to install them, Beck suggested putting microwaves below the countertop on an island for easy access. He said homeowners should choose a freezer on the bottom of their refrigerator and even raise the dishwasher higher for easier loading and unloading. He said choosing wall ovens over ranges work well for seniors, and having front-loading washers and dryers on pedestals are a perfect height.

18

RAMPS AND OUTSIDE ENHANCEMENTS

For seniors who are ready to install a ramp for rolling access to their home, Beck recommends choosing between aluminum, concrete and composite wood materials for durability and strength of structure. He suggested residential ramps comply with the same recommendations for slope required by ADA for commercial ramps if possible. If a homeowner is pouring concrete, Beck also recommended heated sidewalks and driveways to keep them free from ice.

EXTRA ORGANIZATIONAL TRICKS

Ian Northcott of Northcott Construction has built many commercial facilities for hospitals and elderly care facilities. He said for spouses who are caregivers of those beginning to suffer with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, organizational tricks can make all the difference in day-to-day living. Many care facilities use pictures instead of names on room doors, for example, to help those who might lose their way. At home, the same thing might help by labeling drawers or bins with pictures rather than words. “People first lose the ability to remember names or words, and so addressing that early might help avoid many frustrations,” Northcott said. “The goal for most seniors is to stay in their home as long as possible, and little changes can really help make that happen.”

don’t forget natural light

W

Brandpoint

When homeowners think about improvements that can allow them to stay in their homes longer as they grow older, they may focus on things like grab bars in the bathroom or wider doorways to boost accessibility and safety. Yet they often overlook another critical type of improvement that addresses both those concerns, and directly affects seniors’ health - access to glare-free, balanced natural light.

easier-to-open blinds will allow you to maximize the amount of natural light that enters your home through windows, and removing heavy-looking drapes will brighten up the interior decor. Install skylights - Natural light from above can be a great way to enhance your ability to see well, improve your mood, and encourage your body to produce more vitamin D. Installing Energy Star-qualified solar-powered freshair skylights allows you to provide balanced natural light and passive ventilation to any space, including bathrooms where privacy is a concern, and kitchens where visual acuity is critical for everyday tasks. Skylight manufacturer Velux America makes their products especially friendly for seniors by providing programmable remote-controls to open and close their fresh-air skylights, as well as their light-controlling solarpowered blinds, which are available in designer colors and patterns to brighten your decor while increasing skylight energy efficiency. Enhance light with color - Paint is always one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to improve a home’s interior - and repainting in lighter, more vision-friendly colors and textures can help maximize the value of the natural light that enters a room. Choose bright, pleasing colors in paint textures that minimize glare, which can make it difficult for aging eyes to see well. Pay attention to the Light Reflectance Value (LVR) of the paint you’re considering - this number provided by paint manufacturers on sample chips and labels tells you how much light the color reflects vs. absorbs. Seniors should aim for paints in the LVR mid-range of 40-60.

Age-related changes in vision like cataracts or macular degeneration can mean you’ll require more quality light to see well. Yet artificial light can create glare or affect visual acuity. What’s more, simply adding more artificial lights could increase your electricity bill - at a point in your life where controlling expenses is more important than ever. Natural light can be the answer. The benefits of natural light are welldocumented. It allows people to see better in order to perform tasks, affects the body’s sleep rhythms, influences mood and perception and facilitates important bodily processes, according to a report by the Center for Health Design. Bringing more natural light into the home can be especially beneficial for seniors who may not get out as much, have vision issues, have trouble regulating their sleep cycles or experience feelings of isolation and depression. don’t buy impulsively

R

Joy Earls Montana 55

Real estate decisions and transactions can have enormous impacts on our lives both financially and emotionally. Don’t get caught up in the pack, rushing into a major decision or moving just because everyone else says you will miss an opportunity. You will be satisfied and even ahead of the gang if you know where to start, what approach to follow and how to navigate your way to the ultimate goal.

20

Big projects, small tasks, long-term goals and daily jobs are always on my list to complete, just like everyone else. If I rush into one without some kind of plan, I know I may regret some of the results. Without a plan, I can easily get sidetracked. Have you ever been working on a chore, walked away to get a tool and ended up on another project? What about a trip to the grocery store? It can be a slow and expensive journey without a list. But when in the course of a hectic day and needing just a few things, my car veers right into the supermarket parking lot. Peering into my grocery bags as I load them into the trunk, I notice a jar of stuffed olives, newfangled crackers that go great with blue cheese, a rolling pin and some dog biscuits. What the heck? I can’t even remember what I went in for. Most of us know that essentials at grocery stores are the farthest from the doors, which is a setup for those of us running in without our trusty lists. And it works. I leave without even knowing what I went in for, spending too much money and wasting valuable time.

Real estate is too large of a commitment to act impulsively. If this is the right time in your life to buy a home, find a recreational property or increase your income through investing in real estate take your time to do it properly. Here are some real estate stories and common pitfalls, with far worse implications than having a few extra groceries. Foreclosures and bank-owned properties on the surface seem like incredible bargains. Who hasn’t heard a story about someone who paid pennies on the dollar for a hidden gem of a home? Those deals can and do happen occasionally. More often purchases that didn’t go very well are not openly discussed. People should share those losses and failures with each other, but usually they just want to forget all about the wasted time, energy and money. Frankly, it can be embarrassing until we start sharing our story and realize that we aren’t alone in rushing forward without fully thinking through an action. I worked with a couple who had a young child. They sold their home and lived in their parents’ basement while waiting to purchase a foreclosed home. We waited and waited, so long that they finally found another home, perfect for their family and moved in while the first home was still in foreclosure. The bank finally repossessed the home and many months later put it on the market. The sellers were evicted and the property sold almost one year later. Often, homes that go back to their lenders are sold “as is” and have many latent defects that buyers looking for great deals don’t adequately take into consideration. By the time they add up the costs of waiting to close, fixing unknown problems and ending up with a home that may not really meet their needs, a buyer may wonder whether it was a good deal after all. Before jumping into a foreclosure or bank-owned property, understand not only the best-case scenario, but the worst, which happens frequently. Vacation homes, second homes and timeshares can be a blast. Have you ever

not even remembering to buy what you went in for, a home purchase cannot be undone easily. Picture yourself five years or longer from the date of closing on a real estate deal. If it fits your goals, as closely as you can project, it will make sense to move forward. Don’t make the decision because it seems like a good deal or someone told you to move quickly. The best things in life are worth waiting for, I have to keep reminding myself.

While you are daydreaming and thinking of how you could come to this paradise every year, the reality may not sink in until you return home. This dream timeshare sounded great while you were there. You wanted to believe that you could go each year, but when plane tickets go up with other life’s priorities, it may not be possible at all. I know people who honeymooned in a spectacular place and planned to experience the same tranquility each year. They cemented the deal by buying a timeshare before they left. It would have been a better idea to wait until returning home to discuss the reality of such a purchase, but certainly not as romantic. If you have to make a decision like that fast because it will be gone tomorrow then you may want to truly see what tomorrow brings. The best deals for you and your family will still be there in the morning. If they aren’t, then they weren’t meant for you. Have confidence in your decisions and the time it takes to make a good one. Real estate purchases are often the largest ones you will make in a lifetime. You want to make sure that it’s the right one both financially and for your lifestyle. retirement on the road

A

Dominic Farrenkopf for Montana 55

“AFOOT and light-hearted, I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose.”

22

So begins Walt Whitman’s timeless poem, “Song of the Open Road,” which speaks to the heart of those fearless nomads who live the RV lifestyle. Sally and Gerry Hazuka, who met in Montana and now live in Marianna, Florida, retired at the age of 62 and immediately started their new life on the open road. Gerry explained how he met Sally. “I was living in Florida and came to Montana on vacation,” he said. “At the time, I was a sailboat man. Sally owned a country store in Marion, Montana, just west of Kalispell. We fell in love and married. We moved back to Florida, and after our official retirement we downsized, bought an RV and started a new chapter of our lives.” Sally Hazuka, originally from Darby, always

wanted to be a gypsy. “From the time I was a little girl I wanted nothing more than to be a wandering gypsy, but mom would never let me.” Gerry interjected, “I wanted to be a hobo as a boy, but society wouldn’t let me.” “Now he’s a hobo and I’m a gypsy, and we are living and loving our life on the road,” Sally said. Dustin Bretz, of Bretz RV and Marine in Billings, spoke about the free spirits who retire and devote their lives to the open road. “Those seeking fun, freedom, adventure and flexibility, easily embrace the RV lifestyle,” he said. “Many have been doing it their whole lives, just possibly changing what type of RV they use after retirement. Some folks have dreamt about it for years and get started right before or after retirement. Others had never planned or thought about the lifestyle, but they see their friends or family enjoying it so much that they jump in, too.”

Today’s technology allows RV’ers to stay connected with everyone still rooted to firm ground. “It’s easy to keep in touch with our friends and family,” Gerry Hazuka said. “We have a cell phone that has the same number wherever

montana55.com we go. Our mail goes to a company that handles and forwards it to wherever we are. We’re also equipped with satellite TV and have the same channels everywhere we go, so we’re up to date on the news, sports and our shows.” Bretz said motorhomes now come with high-tech chassis, and towables are more aerodynamic and lightweight. Controls are automated and can sync with your IPhone or Android tablets to control lights, awnings, slide-outs and automatic leveling systems, he said. Nowadays, satellite TV and broadband internet are virtually everywhere.

When the Hazukas took to the open road, the most difficult part for them was downsizing their material goods. “That was the hardest part for Gerry and I, but we are over that now,” Sally said. “That is the only loss we felt. We have gained so much more, though. The knowledge of this country, its landmarks, history, parks and scenery have given us more pleasure than we could have ever imagined.” Gerry added, “We purchased an RV that was big enough to serve as our home. Now we have the pleasure of travel with all of the conveniences of

home right here with us.” Staying active is easy for the Hazukas. They find volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. A little research at the local information center produces pamphlets and brochures with all of the sights and sounds of the given area. Depending on what the area has to offer helps the Hazukas determine their length of stay. Over the years they have even managed campgrounds for a few months at a time. They played host to all of the other travelers, and even made a little money doing it. For the Hazukas, it is the other people living the RV lifestyle right along with them that gives them the most pleasure. “The people we meet on the road are so remarkable and friendly,” Sally said. “Gerry and I still keep in touch with people we met 25 years ago. We all have one destination in mind and that’s travel. All of the states we go to have their own special beauty, but none rival the beauty of the people we meet everywhere we go. Gerry and I have been living the RV Lifestyle now for 27 years.” “All but the one year we lived in an apartment,” Gerry said. “Yes, that’s right,” Sally said. “But after that it was time to get on the road again.”

She’s given her time to assist the March of Dimes, Helena Middle School -- which she attended after her family moved here from Belgrade in 1955 -- and the Festival of Trees. She also volunteers with the No One Dies Alone program at St. Peter’s Hospital and the Woman Power Retreat one weekend a year. She volunteered at the hospital’s hospice for 18 years and, she explained, “that really is the love of my life.” While she saw it as a service for people at such a trying time in their lives, she asked herself what else she would like to do.

“I’m not one to sit at home,” she said and turned her attention to helping the Senior Center at Rocky Mountain Development Council. She remembers telling them that she would be able to fill any need, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program has said it can count on Bridge, whatever the need. And while she was giving of her time to others, a diagnosis of breast cancer and regimen of treatment forced her to withdraw from volunteerism in 2001. For a year or two, she underwent treatment before returning to her volunteerism. Four years ago, Bridge returned to the cancer treatment center at the hospital, but not as a patient. Instead, she volunteers her time there to help others going through cancer treatment. “I love that job. It was so fulfilling to me, so rewarding to me,” she said. Volunteers interact with the patients, serve them coffee and get them lunches, among other services, she said. Volunteers also share what the patients are experiencing, Bridge said and explained, “We cry with them, laugh with them. Most importantly we love them.” Bridge still volunteers with administrative services at Fort Harrison. One day a week for four hours

Volunteering at the fort, she explained, “It’s a way to honor their memory.” Knee surgery in mid-November put her volunteer work on hold. She plans to soon return to her service for cancer patients at St. Peter’s Hospital and may be back at the fort later this month. Bridge is also interested in seeing where else she can help and is looking for other opportunities. But at age 72 she smiles at herself when considering the energy she would like to devote to others. “Occasionally I still think I’m 21 and can do all this stuff,” she said. Bridge is the oldest of her parents’ three children. Her sister and brother also live in Helena. Her father, Harold Adams, owned Sunset Memorial Gardens, and her mother, Lucy, worked at State Nursery for a while. Harold and Lucy taught her honesty, integrity and independence. Babysitting jobs that her father helped her get provided money for school clothes and provided her

with a lesson that helped carry her through life. “The work ethic was to get to work on time, do whatever is asked of you, be honest and fair and treat people like you would like to be treated,” Bridge said. “It’s never proven me wrong all these years.” Harold also taught her how to move through disappointment, and she recalled how she was able to put life into perspective after her father’s admonishment to go clean the corral and barn instead of feeling sorry for herself. “Look around,” she said, “There is always someone worse off.” Looking back on her life, its ups and downs, she said “one of the best things for people is to be grateful every day for the things they have in their life. Don’t stay focused on what they don’t have.” “My belief is if you concentrate on what you’re grateful for every day, you will create more gratitude in your life.” “As you become grateful and continue to be grateful, more of that gratitude, blessings and abundance comes your way,” Bridge said. “The people I volunteer with,” she said, “I’m so grateful to have met them and to have them in my life.”

pt keeps joints moving

Y

Brace Hayden for Montana 55

You have probably experienced the grinding noise your neck makes when you are looking over your shoulder as you back your car out of the driveway and rotate your neck. Or you have stepped down from your front porch to get the morning newspaper and your knees creak as you bend.

28

Should the creaks and grinds of your joints be cause for alarm, or are these just the normal noises of the human machine? As a physical therapist, I tend to hear a lot about peoples’ various joint noises and educate them on what is going on and what to do about it. Joint noise and joint stiffness often accumulate over the years like birthday candles on your cake. If we live long enough, we can and should expect to hear and feel a little more from our bodies. These snaps, crackles and pops should not be dismissed as “just

montana55.com

Establishing a balanced exercise routine comprised of strength training, aerobic or cardiovascular-endurance exercise and stretches to move joints through their range of motion can optimize your joint comfort and mobility. the typical sounds of the aging cereal machine,” but reminders that our joints need additional movement and stretches to ease the stiffening process. Our joints naturally age and wear, some faster and more sensitively than others. The weight-bearing joints in the legs, like the knees, hips and feet, as well as the hands and spinal joints can tend to get our attention earlier in life. As we age, the regeneration of the joints’ dense cartilage coating at the ends of our bones tends to slow and wear, thus making more joint noise with daily movements. Our joints will also gain additional node-like material around the joint with age that also can increase the clicking and popping noises as our tendons roll over them. So what should one do about stiff, noisy or achy joints? When is it time to see a medical professional to address a problematic joint? Clear warning signs of an inflamed or injured joint include: a significant trauma to the joint, a joint that is very tender to touch, increased joint warmth or redness, or if the joint swelling is sudden and accompanied by a fever and physical illness. In the physical therapy profession, we recommend getting a joint issue evaluated when it is painful with movement for more than two weeks or when it begins to limit or change your mobility. Differentiating the various types of joint irritation or ‘arthritises’ is outside the scope of this article, but taking action on a joint or joints that are limiting your movement is recommended. Along with seeking solid, evidence-based advice on good nutrition and possible medications for joint support and inflammation reduction, daily exercise is one of the best choices you can make for your health. Establishing a balanced exercise routine comprised of strength training, aerobic or cardiovascularendurance exercise and stretches to move joints through their range of motion can optimize your joint comfort and mobility. Progressive resistance exercises three to four days per week to improve or maintain your muscle strength are important to support and protect your joints. Aerobic training should be performed five to seven days per week for 30–60 minutes in the

form of a low-impact, sustained, moderate-intensity exercise. Some of the best aerobic exercises for helping stiffening joints include pool-based exercises, bike riding or walking with trekking poles. Lastly, a daily mobility exercise and stretch routine can help keep the lotion in your motion by lubricating stiff joints and optimizing your flexibility. Yoga classes, dancing and a stretching routine are all options to work on improving your joint mobility. Specific questions on which exercises are best for stiff or creaky joints can best be answered by your local physical therapist.

supporting veterans

A

Lance Nixon Montana 55

As Administrator Joe Foster of the Montana Veterans Affairs Division sees it, the numbers are clear about why Montana’s veterans must remain a priority with the state. Montana has more veterans as a segment of its population than just about any other state, and many of them are 55 years or older. As of Sept. 30, 2014, data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs show that

30

montana55.com

I think Montana is a relatively patriotic state, there is that aspect of it. – Joe Foster, Montana Veterans affairs division

there were 99,646 veterans in Montana, of whom 75,312 had served in wartime. More important, nearly half of those are from the Vietnam era or before. Some 35,105 served during the Vietnam era, 7,831 during the Korean conflict and 3,987 from World War II. When you consider that the oldest of the state’s 31,210 Gulf War veterans are also entering the senior citizen bracket, it underscores how important veteran services are for Montanans. In fact, Foster said, only one other state – Maine or Alaska, depending how you slice and dice the data – has a greater percentage of veterans per capita than Montana does.

No. 2 in the nation in veteran population

Foster explains that when Montana’s veterans are estimated against the general population, the state has 12.4 percent of its general population as veterans – higher than any other state but Maine. And when veterans are taken as a segment of the adult population, Montana has 16.2 percent, higher than any other state except Alaska. There might be some economic drivers to why so many Montanans put on their country’s uniform, but Foster said there’s an obvious explanation, too: “I think Montana is a relatively patriotic state, there is that aspect of it.” And because it has been that way for a long time,

many families have military traditions – the children serve because parents and grandparents did. “It’s sort of self-generating in that respect,” he said.

10 state offices

It’s partly with those numbers in mind, Foster said, that Montana in recent years has increased the number of state offices working with veterans from seven or eight up to 10. Those 10 offices are crucial, Foster said, for cultivating a “lifetime advocacy relationship” with the state’s veterans to make sure that any injury or condition related to their military service is not left for them to deal with on their own. “There’s always going to be a high percentage of veterans who, when they get out of service, have

an identifiable condition,” Foster said. Montana’s Veterans Affairs service offices work with veterans to help document existing conditions from their military service and claim the benefits that by law belong to veterans. The state can also work with veterans when a condition or injury gets worse; or when a new injury or condition that is related to that military service develops. What Veterans Affairs service offices help veterans with can be conditions or injuries ranging from a bad back to post-traumatic stress disorder. Seek out one of the 10 offices around the state, Foster recommended, if you are a veteran dealing with an issue that may be related to your military service.

directory The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRC) and the Montana Lifespan Respite Coalition are proud to announce the launching of the ADRC Resource Directory. These programs have joined together in creating a searchable website to assist in finding available local and statewide resources throughout Montana. The ADRC Resource Directory focuses on resources related to Montana seniors, adults with disabilities and respite services for all ages. Various service providers and agencies submitted information to create this directory making it possible for the public to find and access services. The directory is updated on an annual basis. This directory is available to the general public and is found at www.Montana-ADRC.com. This website may: • help a family member or a friend caring for a senior who may need assistance • help a family member who lives far from a loved one and is trying to help them find resources they need • help professionals who work with and advocate for people needing resources • help Montana communities learn more about resources available locally • help identify any gaps in services that may be needed

types of care Adult Day Care Center (ADC) – a facility

that provides adults with the regularly scheduled care necessary to meet the needs of daily living. These centers, which may be freestanding or connected to another health care facility, do not provide overnight care.

Adult Foster Home (AFH) – a private home or other facility that provides light personal and custodial care to four or fewer disabled adults or aged persons who are not related to the owner or manager of the home by blood, marriage, or adoption or who are not under the full guardianship of the owner or manager. Assisted Living Facility (ALF) – a congregate residential setting that provides or coordinates personal care, scheduled and unscheduled 24-hour supervision and assistance, activities and health-related services. Home Health Agency (HHA) – a public agency or private organization that offers health services to individuals at home. Home health agencies must include the services of a licensed registered nurse and at least one other therapeutic service. Additional support services may also be available. Hospice (HPC) – a coordinated program of

home and inpatient health care that provides or coordinates palliative and supportive care to meet the needs of a terminally ill patient and the patient’s family. Caregivers help relieve the physical, psychological, spiritual, social and economic stresses experienced during the final stages of illness and dying. Practices are rooted in formal bereavement programs.

Independent Living (IL) - any housing

arrangement designed exclusively for seniors, generally those aged 55 and over. Housing varies widely, from apartment-style living to freestanding homes. Often, the units are designed to be seniorfriendly, offering a more compact space with easier navigation and assistance with yard maintenance.

Types of Independent Living: • Subsidized senior housing. The U.S.

Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) subsidizes senior housing complexes for low income seniors. Waiting lists are common, so it is essential to plan ahead for this option. • Senior apartments. Apartment complexes restricted by age, usually 55+. Rent may include community services such as recreational programs, transportation services, and meals served in a communal dining room. • Retirement communities. Groups of housing units for those aged 55+. These housing units might be single family homes, duplexes, mobile homes, townhouses, or condominiums. Monthly fees may cover services such as outside maintenance, recreation centers or clubhouses. • Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs). CCRCs offer service and housing packages that allow access to independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing facilities in one community. If residents begin to need help with activities of daily living, for example, they can transfer to an assisted living or skilled nursing facility on the same site.

Long Term Care Facility (LTC) – a facility that provides skilled nursing care, intermediate nursing care, or personal care, to a total of two or more individuals. Memory Care (MEM) – a facility that

provides care services and programs for residents suffering from memory loss due to stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or other diagnosed dementia.

Retirement Home (RTH) – a building or buildings in which separate living accommodations are rented or leased to elderly persons for use as their primary residence. Respite Care (RC) – a service that provides temporary relief periods and other stressrelieving support for family members who provide continuous care for developmentally disabled relatives at home. Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) –

the provision of nursing care services, health-related services, and social services under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse on a 24-hour basis.

Perry Backus, Montana 55

R

Retired federal biologist, John Ormiston, carefully works to extract a Wilson’s Warbler from one of three nets set to capture song birds east of Lake Como in the Bitterroot Valley. Researchers place a tiny, numbered band around one leg after basic information is gathered about each bird. The monitoring effort has been ongoing in the Bitterroot National Forest for 22 years.
