Welcome to ROOTS FEST
W
elcome to Downtown Missoula and the 10th annual River City Roots Festival! We are delighted to celebrate our Missoula community and to welcome University of Montana students and their families into the fold of our community. Downtown is your destination to connect with friends and family for shopping, dining and oh so much more! The Missoula Downtown Association and its partners have assembled the best-ever signature celebration as we kick it up a notch for the 10th Anniversary. Honoring the Main Stage on Main Street will be the best bands from the last nine years, and we’ve moved the festival to a Friday-Saturday format, so we’ll have two night-time headliners. The festival kicks off at 11am on Friday with the Juried Art Show on Main Street and the Family Fun Festival in Caras Park. Music commences at 2:30 pm Friday with the Dead Winter Carpenters, and Goose Creek Symphony will close out the evening at 8:30 pm. Saturday’s lineup opens with the Whizpops at 12:30 pm and ends with Acoustic Syndicate at 8:30 pm. The entertainment lineup, both on Main Street and in Caras Park, is phenomenal this year!
FREE PARKING. FREE BUSES. ALL WEEKEND! Downtown parking is free all weekend, thanks to the Missoula Parking Commission, and zero-fare Mountain Line busses all lead to Downtown until almost 10 pm. Roots Fest is admission free for everyone, thanks to nearly 50 Missoula-area businesses who sponsor the event! Downtown Missoula has something for everyone and has been highlighted in dozens of national magazines and news outlets, including Outside Magazine, Backpacker and the Travel Channel. Riverfront recreation, parks and trails, exceptional breweries, bars and coffee houses, festivals and entertainment galore are people magnets that create the culture folks are so fond of.
Roots Fest is a reflection of our community’s character that blends arts and culture with outdoor recreation. Sign up for the four-mile fun run or one of two stand-up paddle board races, all to be held on Saturday. We welcome all Montana Football fans to Roots Fest, and encourage you to spend some time before and after the game at Roots Fest. Also welcome are fans of North Dakota State and our friends from ESPN. It will be an epic weekend as the Griz challenge the Bison, four-time defending national champions, in Coach Bob Stitt’s career opener with Montana. We are proud to showcase Missoula in the streets of Downtown. Welcome to Roots Fest and thanks to all our sponsors, partners and volunteers. Come connect to our community! Linda K. 2015 Entertainment Overview
The 10th anniversary of Missoula’s signature celebration will be a reunion year for the 10 bands selected to perform in 2015. Each group brings a special flavor of music in the Americana tradition to the streets of Downtown Missoula, as we welcome new and returning UM students and their families to Montana’s most culturally-diverse city. This year’s featured musical entertainment includes:
DEAD WINTER CARPENTERS North Lake Tahoe, California deadwintercarpenters.com Friday, August 28 • 2:30-4 pm This quintet made its first appearance at Roots Fest in 2013 and was blown away by the hospitality. With foot-stomping original tunes highlighted with five voices of melodies and harmonies, the Dead Winter Carpenters present materials based upon real life experiences. Jenni Charles on fiddle, Dave Lockhart on the upright bass, guitarists Jesse Dunn and Bryan Daines, and drummer Brian Huston crisscross the country, offering Americana roots-rock with a touch of alternative country. They will feel right at home on the Main Stage, performing with three other groups who also took the stage in 2013.
AMANDA SHAW & the cute guys New Orleans, Louisiana amandashaw.com Friday, August 28 4:30-6 pm Amanda Shaw made her first appearance on the Roots Stage in 2010 as kid wonder. She had the crowd dancing on their toes with her fiery fiddle playing that was smokin’ hot. Today the 24-year-old is integrating her roots sound into the mainstream that reflects her girl-powered sassiness, sharp witty lyrics, and fashion as a statement of distinction. Shaw made her first national-stage appearance as an elementary school student and has played in front of large crowds since she was 10-years-old. This fiddle player is one of the best in the country and brings with her a group of “Cute Guys” to back her up.

Coming from a variety of locations across the country, Goose Creek has recorded 11 albums. With a following similar to Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, Goose Creek Symphony will headline Friday Night on Main Street.

TWO BIT FRANKS Bozeman, Montana twobitfranks.com Saturday, August 29 • 2:30-4 pm Featuring some of Montana’s finest bluegrass musicians, Two Bit Franks is a five-piece from Bozeman that showcases both original music and adaptations you’ve never imagined. With their first appearance on the Roots stage in 2011, Two Bit Franks is comprised of frontman John Lowell, mandolin player Tom Murphy and bass player Russ Smith, Jeff Shouse and Kevin Fabozzi.
By far Missoula’s favorite sextet is the Lil’ Smokies which just won the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition. Their 2009 start was fast and furious, as the group’s weekly jam sessions got serious, and demand for their varietal blend of happy music turned into a whirlwind. Weaving through genres of bluegrass, newgrass, original compositions, and sheer raw energy, the Lil’ Smokies were nominated for the Momentum Bluegrass Award at the 2014 International Bluegrass Music Awards (IBMA). The Smokies have appeared on the Roots Fest stage a record three times (2011, 2013, 2014) and will be rockin’ Roots when the Griz Football game concludes.

10th Annual River City Roots Festival
Showcasing a Climate Smart
Roots and Missoula
The River City Roots Festival is Missoula’s signature celebration of the city we live in. Live music, exceptional art, culture, family, fitness and fun abound – and not so coincidentally, so do sustainability initiatives that reduce the carbon footprint of the festival and its attendees. It’s called being CLIMATE SMART. It has been part of Missoula’s DNA for a long time, and it is our commitment hosting this party in a special place for many generations to come. This year, Roots Fest has teamed up with Climate Smart Missoula to showcase simple actions that leave our community and planet cleaner, safer and healthier. Thanks to GREEN sponsors Mountain Line, Shanti Guitars, Territorial Landworks, and DJ&A, we have resources to minimize our footprint while maximizing fun at this year’s Roots Festival. Here is what we do and what you can do to celebrate music, community and Missoula in a resourceful and respectful way.
how we are climate smart
• Hosting this event in the urban core means reduced travel distances and more opportunities to bike, walk and bus to Roots Fest. • Commemorative Roots Fest cups are intended to be used and reused. Take it home with you as a souvenir and a reminder of the fun you had. • We feature a carbon neutral Main Stage and offset travel by each performance group with the purchase of carbon credits. • We are transitioning towards zero waste by recycling plastics, aluminum and cardboard with help from Garden City Recycling and the Roots Fest GREEN TEAM. • Most of the beer, wine and spirits offered at Roots Fest was made right here in Missoula, Montana. Locally produced food and beverages are good for the environment. • Nearly 300 people volunteer 4-8 hours of their time this weekend to staff Roots Fest, including a Climate Smart ambassador team.
• Artists using lights to showcase their work are using sustainable power sources, thanks to the University of Montana Energy Technology program.
how you can be climate smart
• Bike, walk, bus or carpool to the festival. Mountain Line offers zero-fare service. Roots Fest & SUP Classic
A Blend Like No Other
One of the most special features of Downtown Missoula is having a beautiful river that runs right through the heart of the community. With the removal of the Milltown Dam and the creation of Brennan’s Wave, both in 2007, Missoula has seen a significant increase in river recreation over the last eight years. In celebration of the wonderful things happening in the river corridor, Roots Fest partnered with the paddling community to host the third annual Roots Fest SUP Classic. With the start and finish near the Higgins Avenue Bridge, the SUP Classic will start at 10 am on Saturday and will feature both a 5-mile race and a 1-mile race. Following the races, community members will have the opportunity to try paddle boarding on demonstration equipment. Sponsored by Bob Ward’s and Five on Black, the SUP Classic offers participants and viewers the chance to see more than just Downtown Missoula.

Fun to watch as well as race, paddle boarding has become extremely popular throughout the Rocky Mountain West. Come enjoy the water and cheer on both the professional and novice paddle boarders Saturday morning. The start and finish will take place near the Boone and Crockett Club, as the mass start will have racers paddling up river and then returning to the same location. The riverfront trail offers great viewing, as does both the Higgins and Madison bridges. Folks walking to and from the Griz Football game will have prime viewing opportunities. Go to www.rivercityrootsfestival.com to register for the SUP Classic, or come paddle a demo board. It’s the newest thing in river recreation.

During the school year, the Boys and Girls Club offers an after school program at the City Life Community Center, Council Grove Apartment Complex, Lolo School, Target Range School, and Bonner School. School sites offer after-school care until 6 pm with a focus on Power Hour homework, structured and free play time, snacks and having fun. Things You Want to Know
about Roots Fest
What It Takes to Make This Festival • As with all events produced by the Missoula Downtown Association, Roots Fest is admission free, but your purchase of the wristband and commemorative beer cup for $8.00 helps the MDA pay for this over $100,000 event. If you bring your beer cup back the next day, you’ll only need to purchase a second-day wristband for $3.00. • Right around 50 sponsors have contributed more than $80,000 in cash and nearly $15,000 in trade-out services to produce Roots Fest. • 1,000 T-shirts and 6,500 beer cups have been procured from local vendors. • 300 volunteers make Roots Fest come alive. • Production Partners joining the Missoula Downtown Association to produce this event include the City of Missoula, Run Wild Missoula, and Climate Smart Missoula. • 10 bands, 21 artists, 20 children’s organizations from Missoula, 20 food vendors, 400+ runners, and more than 15,000 fans make this party!
Arriving at the Festival • We love Roots Festers to arrive by bicycle, walking or taking bus! • Mountain Line is now Zero-Fare, so anyone can ride free of charge all day on both Friday and Saturday, and most routes lead to Downtown Missoula. Visit www.mountainline.com or download the mobile app to find your route! • If you arrive by bicycle, please park at one of the many bike racks throughout Downtown, including the bike corral in Caras Park. If you do ride your bike, please dismount and walk inside the festival area. • If you brought your skateboard, please stay outside the festival area while on your wheels. • If you drove your car, festival parking is available at the Central Park, Park Place and Bank Street parking garages, as well as throughout the riverfront area near Caras Park. • Thanks to the Missoula Parking Commission, parking throughout Downtown Missoula is FREE for the entire duration of Roots Fest. • Parking at the Central Park Structure is easy. You can enter the structure from either Main Street or Ryman Street, but you must exit from Ryman.
How to Have Fun • Purchase your wristband and mug first, then get in line for a drink. Bring your ID; you will not be able to drink without it. • Your first drink is FREE, thanks to the Missoula Downtown Association. • You are welcome to consume alcohol inside the Roots Festival area, marked by barricades, but you must have an official Roots Fest Wristband! If you take your drink outside the barricades, you risk getting an Open Container ticket. • Please do not bring your own food and beverages into the festival area. Your purchases from our vendors support locally-owned businesses and
helps cover the hard costs and keep this festival admission free for all. • This year’s Roots Fest offerings include Big Sky beer, wine and specialty drink beverages made with locally-sourced liquors from Montana Distillery. • Yes, you may bring your lawn chairs to the festival, and we hope you do! • Yes, you absolutely should check out the Family Fun Festival in Caras Park because there’s a lot to see and do! • Be sure to check out all the varied art work on the street as well. We’ve got all kinds of beautiful and one-of-a-kind items! • There is still time to register for the 4-mile fun run slated for Saturday morning! Register online at www.rivercityrootsfestival.com or in person at the Runner’s Edge. • If you need a band-aid or maybe you lost or found something, go see the folks in the Volunteer Check-In area inside the Central Park Garage.
Keeping It Green • Help the Missoula Downtown Association keep Roots Fest Clean & Green by keeping your commemorative cup and utilizing one of the 17 garbage and recycling stations we have located throughout the festival area. We’re recycling plastic, aluminum and cardboard. Last year we collected almost 300 pounds of recyclables. • We provide water refill stations throughout the festival, thanks to our friends at Culligan Water. However, we want you to use your Roots Fest cup, the bottle you purchased at the Food Court or the Bar, or one you brought with you. What’s the point if we’re providing paper cups for every consumer, right?
Please Be Considerate • Please do not bring your pets to Roots Fest! This is a people festival, not an animal festival. Folks with pets will be asked to remain outside the festival area. • Please be polite to the folks who are serving you. They are volunteering their time to serve. • Please exit the festival area if you would like to smoke. We realize it’s a street festival, but please don’t subject those around you to secondhand smoke. • Please stay off the railings on top of the garage, as well as the sound and staging equipment. We want you to be safe!
Getting Information • Hopefully you are reading this program produced by the Missoulian. • The Roots Fest website can be reached at www.rivercityrootsfestival.com. • The Downtown Ambassadors and the Roots Fest Information & Merchandise Booth are great ways to acquire information on-site. The MSO Hub at 140 N. Higgins is another great way to get event and day-of information!
