Welcome to ROOTS FEST

W

elcome to Roots Fest & Downtown Missoula! We invite you to explore the heart of Missoula and connect to a community that understands what art, music, outdoor recreation, and healthy family-oriented living offers our residents and visitors. As we welcome new and returning University of Montana students back to the Garden City, Roots Fest will give everyone a taste of all that is great about Missoula. As the Signature Celebration of Missoula, Roots Fest is a showcase of incredible Americana music and art. For the first time in its 11-year history, the festival headliner for Friday night is Missoula’s homegrown bluegrass band: the Lil’ Smokies, winner of the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition. The Roots Fest Art Show has exploded this year and will feature 30 distinctly creative artists with their exceptional showcase of fine art, home décor, apparel, photography, jewelry and more. The Family Fun Fest, located in Caras Park, will bring close to 40 organizations and groups together for two full days of healthy, family-oriented activities for children of all ages, including on-stage performances, education and recreation activities. The Boys & Girls Club will host a family friendly dance party with live music from the Joan Zen Band Friday evening. Despite being cancelled last year due to smoke, the Roots Run features an unusual distance of four miles and will showcase a new course this year. Organized by Run Wild Missoula, the Roots Run and offers everything from family walking to cash prizes for the top three men’s and top three women’s finishers. Of course no festival is complete without a variety of fun food and beverage choices, and Downtown Missoula’s food trucks and vendors are truly Montana’s best! Additionally, a select menu of locally-sourced beer, wine and cocktails will be available. Roots Fest remains admission free for all, thanks to the generosity of the Missoula business community and sponsors who help cover the $120,000 in hard costs to produce the festival. Our major sponsors are highlighted throughout this publication, and we encourage you to support these businesses who sustain our community and this annual celebration of Missoula. As you wander the streets of Downtown Missoula, you will notice a few new things, including new businesses, new pedestrian signs, new parking meters, some beautifully-painted pianos, public art

installations, and new development projects like the Stockman Bank Building at Broadway and Orange. On the horizon are new residential developments, a new art park, a new entertainment line-up at the Wilma Theater, new college students and more. Downtown Missoula is the best place to be. You can get everything you need right here in the heart of the Rocky Mountain West. Come see what folks are talking about, and let us entertain you and your family this weekend and beyond. On behalf of the Roots Fest Planning Committee and the Downtown Missoula Partnership, we thank you for your business and your support!

11th Annual River City Roots Festival

2016 Entertainment Overview

The 11th anniversary of Missoula’s signature celebration will host nine wonderful bands selected to perform in 2016. Each group brings a special flavor of music in the Americana tradition to the streets of Downtown Missoula as we welcome new and returning UM students and their families to Montana’s most culturally-diverse city. This year’s featured musical entertainment includes:

Gipsy Moon Nederland, Colorado gipsymoonband.com Friday, August 26 • 2:30-4 pm This quartet of artists composed of Silas Herman on the mandolin, guitar, and vocals, Mackenzie Page on guitar, tenor banjo, and vocals, Matt Cantor on bass and vocals, and Andrew Conley on cello are kicking off Roots with their reinvented indiefolk. Their unique blend of harmonies, poetry, instruments, Celtic melodies, Latin rhythms, jazzy vocals, bluegrass drive, and gypsy swing, will have the crowd swaying their hips in no time. This group aims to create an endless musical journey with their original songs about nature, love, and strengthening a community bond - a message that will fit right in on Missoula’s Main Stage.

Fruition Portland, Oregon fruitionband.com Friday, August 26 4:30-6 pm What was once a rootsy, string-centric outfit with naturally blended three-part harmonies, has evolved into a full-fledged rock band with an easy but powerful grasp of soul, blues, and British Invasion era pop. This quintet is rapidly rising in popularity, with appearances at Bonnaroo, Northwest String Summit, and Telluride Bluegrass where Rolling Stone called their sound “raucous originals filled with heartfelt lyrics and stadium-worthy energy”. Fruition’s lyrics create a tension of wistful romanticism through themes of embracing being on the road while still feeling like you’re missing out on the everyday lifestyle that other people get to have.

The Lil’ Smokies

Nashville, Tennessee darrellscott.com Friday, August 26 6:30-8 pm Raved for his powerful songwriting, passionate vocals, and masterful picking, Darrell Scott has had quite the long lasting career and impressive resume. Working and composing with big time country artists such as Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, and Guy Clark, Scott is known for his lyrically-brilliant songs that surpass the simpler “big hat” bragging or slick country-pop songs. In 2003, Scott launched his own record label, Full Light Records, and has since written his own traditional, mountain country album. The Roots Festival is just one of over 50 shows that Scott will perform at this year.

Missoula, Montana thelilsmokies.com Friday, August 26 8:30-10 pm By far Missoula’s favorite sextet is the Lil’ Smokies. Their 2009 start was fast and furious, as the group’s weekly jam sessions got serious and demand for their varietal blend of happy music turned into a whirlwind. Weaving through genres of bluegrass, newgrass, original compositions, and sheer raw energy, the Lil’ Smokies won at the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass festival band competition. The Lil’ Smokies have appeared on the Roots Fest stage a record four times (2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015) and will be the headlining band on the Main Stage Friday night for the first time.

Showcasing a Climate Smart

Roots and Missoula

This year, Roots Fest has once again teamed up with Climate Smart Missoula and the City of Missoula to showcase simple actions that leave our festival, community and planet cleaner, safer and healthier. For example, at the end of every night of last year’s festival we picked up hundreds of plastic straws off the ground only to be added to the hundreds more that made it into the trash bins. At best, those straws ended up in the landfill. At worst, they could have ended up in our river and eventually our oceans. According to thelastplasticstraw.org, 500 million single use plastic straws are used and discarded in the United States. That’s 175 billion a year filtering into our landfills and littering the oceans. That is enough to wrap around the Earth’s circumference 2.5 times each day. We want our festival to positively affect our environment, health and community, and we think our cocktails are still delicious without straws, so we have chosen to eliminate them this year. We are encouraging our food court vendors and downtown neighbors to do the same. This is just one example of how our decisions and simple actions can have big impacts. Please join us in striving for a straw free weekend and beyond. The River City Roots Festival is Missoula’s signature celebration of the city we live in. Live music, exceptional art, culture, family, fitness and fun abound – and not so coincidentally, so do sustainability initiatives that reduce the carbon footprint of the festival and its attendees. It’s called being CLIMATE SMART. It has been part of Missoula’s DNA for a long time, and it is our commitment hosting this party in a special place for many generations to come. In addition to striving to be straw free, here is what we do and what you can do to celebrate music, community and Missoula in a resourceful and respectful way.

How WE are Climate Smart

• Hosting this event in the urban core means reduced travel distances and more opportunities to bike, walk and bus to Roots Fest. • Commemorative Roots Fest cups are intended to be used and reused. Take it home with you as a souvenir and a reminder of the fun you had. • As part of the City’s Zero Waste initiative, we are partnering with Republic Services to offer their new All-In-One Recycling service throughout the festival. • To further Zero Waste efforts and to nourish those in need, we are partnering with the Missoula Food Bank on food recovery and redistribution. • We feature a carbon neutral Main Stage and food court, and offset travel by each band with the purchase of carbon credits. • Nearly 300 people volunteer 4-8 hours of their time this weekend to staff Roots Fest, including a Climate Smart ambassador team.

How YOU can be Climate Smart

• Bike, walk, bus or carpool to the festival. Mountain Line offers zero-fare service. If you arrive by bicycle, please lock your bike at one of the many bike racks (not trees) throughout Downtown • Bring your own water bottle and refill it at the water station under the Missoula Downtown Association tent or in Caras Park. Avoid single use bottled water. • Keep recycling contamination down sorting recyclables properly. Only send to the landfill what you must. Chat with the Climate Smart ambassadors for guidance and to answer questions. • Interact with vendors about their sustainable practices and encourage their efforts. Purchase local and regional food served with minimizing waste in mind where possible. • Visit one of the many Missoula businesses or organizations dedicated to climate action and sustainability showcased throughout the Main Stage, Art Show and Family Fun Fest in Caras Park. Find out what they do and how you can contribute. Educate yourself. • Consider powering down your home while at the festival by turning off lights or air conditioning. • If you do travel from out of town, bring a friend and carpool. Consider purchasing carbon offsets for your personal travel.

Thanks to GREEN sponsors Mountain Line, NorthWestern Energy, Providence St. Patrick Hospital, and Territorial Landworks, we have resources to minimize our footprint while maximizing fun at this year’s Roots Festival. Roots Fest is intended to showcase sustainability efforts in event planning and beyond. We welcome your ideas and input and hope you have a great time at this year River City Roots Festival.

Things You Want to Know

about Roots Fest

What It Takes to Make This Festival

• $120,000: Cost to put on Roots Fest. It’s no small cost to put on a festival like this. As with all events produced by the Missoula Downtown Association, Roots Fest is admission FREE. It’s because of our sponsors, as well as attendees taking advantage of our local food vendors and purchasing the wristband/ commemorative cup, that costs associated with the event are covered.

• $80,000+: Amount of sponsorship dollars from local businesses to help produce Roots Fest; nearly $15,000 is in trade-out services

• 15,000+: number of attendees roaming the streets of Downtown Missoula across both days

• Please do not bring your own food and beverages into the festival area. Your purchases from our vendors support locally-owned businesses and help cover the hard costs to help keep this festival ADMISSION FREE FOR ALL.

• Adult beverages are available: purchase your wristband and commemorative cup first, then get in line for a drink. Bring your ID; you will not be able to drink without it. • You must have an official Roots Fest Wristband to drink within the festival area.

• Stay inside the festival area with your adult beverages. If you take your drink outside the barricades, you risk getting an Open Container ticket.

• Your first drink is FREE when you purchase your Roots Cup and wristband, thanks to the Missoula Downtown Association.

• 6,000 beer cups bought from a local business to help keep the event green and reduce waste

• Beverage Garden offerings include Big Sky beer, wine, and specialty cocktails made with locally-sourced liquors from Montana Distillery.

• 250 volunteers needed to make Roots Fest come alive

• If you need a band-aid, or maybe you lost or found something, go see the folks in the Volunteer Check-In area inside the Central Park Parking Structure.

• 3 Production Partners: the City of Missoula, Run Wild Missoula, and Climate Smart Missoula all help with various pieces so Roots runs smoothly

Keeping It Green

• 10 bands, 30 artists, 20 local food vendors, 400+ runners, and 20+ children’s organizations make this party!

• 1,000 t-shirts for sale, for runners, and for our volunteers

Arriving at the Festival

• We love Roots Festers who arrive via alternative transportation: walk, bike, or bus

• Walk the trails: Missoula has an amazing trail system - park outside of Downtown and walk with ease along our beautiful river.

• Ride the bike: please park your bike at one of the many bike racks throughout Downtown, including the bike corral in Caras Park. Please dismount and walk your bike inside the festival area.

• Ride the Line: Mountain Line is now Zero-Fare and all routes lead to Downtown Missoula. Visit www.mountainline.com to find your route or download their app. Mountain Line is also a major sponsor of Roots Fest.

• Vehicle users: If you drive your car, festival parking is available at the Central Park (enter from Main or Ryman; exit from Ryman only), Park Place, and Bank Street parking structures, as well as throughout the riverfront area near Caras Park.

• Help the Missoula Downtown Association keep Roots Fest Clean & Green by keeping your commemorative cup ($7.00 to purchase; bring your beer cup back the next day and purchase a wristband for $3.00).

• Utilize one of the garbage and recycling stations we have located throughout the festival area. We’re recycling plastic, aluminum, and cardboard. Last year we collected almost 300 pounds of recyclables.

• We provide water refill stations throughout the festival, thanks to our friends at Culligan Water. Use your Roots Fest cup, the water bottle you purchased at the Food Court, or one you brought with you – help us reduce waste by using reusable drinkware.

• Skip the Straw: the Roots Fest bar will not be using straws this year in an effort to reduce plastic use and waste

Please Be Considerate/Safe

• Please do not bring your pets to Roots Fest! Folks with pets will be asked to remain outside the festival area.

• Please be polite to the folks who are serving you. They are volunteering their time.

• Thanks to the Missoula Parking Commission, parking throughout Downtown Missoula is FREE for the entire duration of Roots Fest.

• Please exit the festival area if you would like to smoke. We realize it’s a street festival, but please don’t subject those around you to secondhand smoke.

• If you brought your skateboard, scooter, etc., please refrain from riding them within the festival area.

• Please stay off the railings on top of the parking structure, as well as the sound and staging equipment. We want you to be safe!
