12th Annual River City Roots Festival
Welcome to Roots Fest
n behalf of our Downtown Missoula community, we welcome you and your family to the heart of our city and invite you to come celebrate this place we live in and love at the 12th annual River City Roots Festival August 25-26, 2017. Roots Fest was created in 2006 as the annual Signature Celebration of our community. It’s our way of ending the summer with a bang and showcasing all that is good about Missoula. One of Missoula’s greatest assets is the University of Montana, and Roots Fest serves as the official Welcome Back to School Celebration for all faculty, staff, students and their families. UM students and their parents are encouraged to spend time shopping and dining Downtown, while learning more about their new community. Downtown is a welcoming destination that embraces all residents and visitors. Roots Fest is a showcase of all that makes Missoula unique: live music, beautiful art, family fun, outdoor recreation, and local food and beverages, all without having to lay down $20 or $50 for a ticket to the show. You see, Roots Fest is admission free, available to folks of all socioeconomic levels, because we believe art, music, and family play should be accessible for all. The Missoula business community supports the festival with sponsorship dollars, so it can be free for all to enjoy. Missoula has been recognized multiple times on the national level. Recent honors include Top 20 College Town in America, Top Cities for Biking, LeastStressed Cities in America, Best Cities for Active Retirement, Most Fit-Friendly Communities, Best-Run Cities in American, Best Cities for Singles, Best Cities

John Jorgenson Band
John Jorgenson born July 6, 1956 in Madison, Wisconsin, is perhaps best known for his guitar work with bands such as the Desert Rose Band and The Hellecasters. Jorgenson is also proficient in the mandolin, mandocello, Dobro, pedal steel, piano, upright bass, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone. John Jorgenson, known for his blistering guitar and mandolin licks and mastery of a broad musical palette, has earned a reputation as a world-class musician, as evidenced by his collaborations with Earl Scruggs, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Luciano Pavarotti, Bob Dylan and many others.
12th Annual River City Roots Festival
Anders Osborne
Between the potency of his richly detailed songwriting, his intensely emotional, soulful vocals and his piercing, expert guitar work, New Orleans’ Anders Osborne is a true musical treasure. A powerful live performer, the musician has won over fans through non-stop touring either with his own band, as a solo artist, or as a guest with his countless musical admirers. Since his recording debut in 1989, Osborne has written virtually all of his own material and contributed memorable songs to a wide variety of artists. He is among the most original and visionary musicians writing and performing today.

Band of Heathens
duende – [duen-de] (noun) 1. a quality of inspiration and passion 2. A heightened sense of emotion, expression and authenticity 3. a spirit. Duende, the title of The Band of Heathens’ fifth studio album (and eighth overall), marks their tenth anniversary as a group, and it certainly applies to its overall theme about the collective search for connection and communion in a technology-fueled world increasingly splintered, distracted and lonely. Indeed, Duende lives up to those high ideals, a stylistically diverse effort that takes a leap beyond their last, more acoustic, introspective effort, 2013’s Sunday Morning Record, with an eclectic batch of material that shows where The Band of Heathens has been, but more importantly, where they are going.
Ryan Shupe & The Rubberband
Few would-be recording artists have the confidence or wherewithal to enter the mainstream music business on their own terms. The nature of today’s consolidated label structure and clogged mass media channels forces most struggling bands to jump at the first opportunity they see -- if they see one at all. Not only did the band, and only the band, play their own instruments on their CD, Dream Big, they finished the CD – completely – before even stepping foot into a record label conference room. By making their own disc before signing a contract, they never had to adhere to the edicts of record label execs or go through the standard A&R process of choosing label approved songs and producers. They did it on their own and on their own terms
Malcolm Holcombe
Malcolm Holcombe is possessed by a singular sort of solitary genius that, like the novelist William Faulkner, is yet the voice of an entire region – the South--and even of a generation, though somehow transcendent of it, timeless. If true greatness moves from the particular to the universal, his music speaks for all of humanity while remaining entirely his own. Yet Holcombe stands apart, his soul-stirring lyrics are hill country high poetry, the music pure back roads. His musicianship is uncanny, like no other, as though he had invented the guitar. His intimate, poignantly etched lyrics invite you in, sit you down, speak directly to you. Listening to them, you are befriended.
Rotgut Whines
Rotgut Whines combines soulful rhythms with energizing tempos and passionate storytelling to create their signature sound: Fingerpickin’ Soul and Roll. Lead singer/ guitarist Evan Manuel and drummer/backup vocalist Andrew Murphy prove wrong the old adage that there is more strength in numbers. Murphy’s crisp beats and deep baritone voice provide the perfect supplements to Manuel’s flying fingers and catchy melodies. First-time listeners are often shocked at the pair’s ability to create the powerful sound some fans have described as “magic.” Their palpable energy and passion make it impossible not to get up and dance.

Whizpops
The Whizpops are an award-winning band of teaching artists and musicians from Missoula, Montana, with a track record of releasing award-winning science based music. The Whizpops are a Parents’ Choice and Creative Child Award-winning band featuring two elementary school teachers (Kevin Cashman and Casey Schaefer) and a fluid assortment of other talented musicians with a love of nature and science. This talented bunch rocks venues large and small, delighting audiences of all ages. “Their lyrics are for young children, but their music will entertain most any adult,” the Missoulian notes.
Taj Weekes & Adowa
Taj Weekes is dreadlocked Rastafarian musician, bred in St. Lucia, but shaped by intercontinental life experience. An unwavering, energetic humanitarian, his dedication extends beyond his socially conscious lyrics into activism. Weekes is a creative, poetic singer-songwriter who fronts a dynamic reggae band named Adowa, a disciplined team of talented musicians from differing cultures and with broad musical influences. This balance between seeing what is and seeking what should be clearly powers his social activism. It also imbues his songs with a pragmatic, non-judgmental optimism that is not merely unusual in reggae, but almost unique. So what makes Taj Weekes special can be summarized in three words: MUSICIAN. POET. HUMANITARIAN.
Ghost of Paul Revere
Born on the banks of the Saco River, brothers in all but name, the Ghost of Paul Revere is Maine’s holler-folk band. A powerful, energetic, nontraditional American folk band that’s renowned for harmony fueled, heartpounding performances full of songs with unique identities that remain undeniably the Ghost of Paul Revere. Formed around childhood friends Max Davis, Sean McCarthy, and Griffin Sherry, joined by Matt Young on harmonica, the Ghost of Paul Revere played their first show together in 2011 at a tiny bar in Portland, Maine. Now, they play across the nation, bringing holler-folk into houses, bars, and music halls.
Third Capo Kids & Satellite Jacket
Third Capo Kids & Satellite Jacket are two youth bands from Missoula, Montana. They are part of a program of Tangled Tones Music Studio called Playing With the Band. The program allows youth to work with a professional musician as a mentor to learn about playing live music together, writing songs, using gear properly, recording in a studio and how to collaborate with their music community in Missoula. Third Capo Kids and Satellite Jacket play a mix of cover and original songs. Their ages range from 9 to 16 years old. Their energetic performance will get you dancing and singing along. Come check them out at both stages at Roots Fest!!! Directed by Matthew Nord.

ugust 25th and 26th Family Fun Fest is a celebration for all ages. One of the 16 acts to grace the Caras Park stage, The Salamanders will be entertaining young and old Saturday, August 26th at 11a.m. The Salamanders formed approximately 7 years ago when singers/musicians Matthew Nord and Andrew Hunt met while partnering in the Rhythm Tikes and Kids Vibrations projects. Solo artist Andrew had returned from Pittsburgh and Andrew was teaching music at a local daycare when they were offered their first gig at a Family Friendly night at the Top Hat. Three other talented artists joined them to become The Salamanders. The entire band consists of Andrew Hunt (vocals, songwriter, guitar and piano), Andrew Nord (vocals, songwriter, keyboards and guitar), Russ Gay (vocals, bass), Heather Hunt (vocals, sax) and Antonio Alverez (vocals, drums). It has been said that there music is not “preach and teach” but is best described in one word-whimsical. Their latest album, Bubbles, definitely holds true to that word with family tunes such as The Cat, Pirate Santa and Matt Damon Magnetized Me. The title song of Bubbles conveys the magical impermanence of life. Inspired by their own children, the lyrics of Andrew and Matthew encourages all children to dance and celebrate the world around them. If you have not heard their music and would like a preview before the festival, you can pick up Bubbles and their other works at Rockin Rudy’s, Whipper Snappers, digital sources such as Pandora and Spotify or visit their website at salamandermusic.com. Returning for their 4th River City Roots Festival/Family Fun Fest, The Salamanders are excited to perform at what is truly “the gem of the Missoula music scene offering high quality acts on both stages.” For more information about all of the great River City Roots Festival entertainment at both venues, go to rivercityrootsfestival.com.

Five Valley Custom Furniture & Design
“Every single thing Montana has to offer inspires what I do” - Joey Burke
A
fter selling all his furniture to pursue an adventure in South America, Joey Burke came home to an empty house with only a mattress inside. As an artistic problem solver, Burke built furniture to fill his house which eventually started his career in furniture design. Now, working alongside his two best friends and business partners, Mathew Hoffman and Eric Fredericksen, the trio travels the Pacific Northwest looking for unique pieces of wood to shape into custom furniture. “Once I see a piece of wood, I fall in love with the character of it, the wood then dictates what it’s going to be. I don’t just come up with an idea and find a piece to fit it,” said Burke. This summer is Five Valley Custom Furniture & Design’s
first appearance at the River City Roots Festival Art Show. The company is featuring their rustic yet modern natural wood material to create high-end yet affordable furniture based on unique designs. Burke first introduced his art to the Missoula community at First Friday, hanging paintings in local businesses. He is now bridging the gap between second and third dimensional art, applying his brush strokes to a physical medium. Explore more of their work at www.fivevalleyscustom.com Join Five Valley Custom Furniture & Designs and 35 other artists at the 12th annual River City Roots Festival Art Show Downtown Missoula. Running, Rivers, & roots
ake no mistake, Missoula is a running town. Runners and walkers are out on the local roads and trails all year long in all conditions – from Spring Rains to Summer Sun to Fall Colors to Winter Snow. Don’t believe me? Then just spend a little time on the Milwaukee Trail on the south side of the Clark Fork River. Or on the flanks of Mount Sentinel. Or the trails around Mt. Jumbo and the Rattlesnake Corridor. It wasn’t always this way. For many years, Missoula had a dedicated but rather small running community. That all changed in the early to mid-2000’s due to a committed group of local runners and volunteers. Runner’s Edge opened their doors in 2001, Run Wild Missoula (RWM) was formed in 2006 and the first Missoula Marathon was held in 2007. As they say, the rest is history. RWM has now grown to over 1,500 members and is one of the largest running clubs in the NW region. We believe that the growth is connected to the fact that it’s easy to make running and walking part of the fit, active, outdoor lifestyle that has been so widely embraced by Missoulians over the last 10 to 15 years.

Hosting the 4-Mile Run as part the River City Roots Festival is one more way in which RWM can be part of the fabric of the community. We love that you can start your Saturday morning with the 4-Mile Run, then spend the rest of the day with friends and family enjoying the festival’s food, art and music. Days like that are part of why Missoula is such a great place to live, work, and play; and, why being part of the festival is an easy choice for Run Wild Missoula.

Stop Sucking missoula
he River City Roots Festival is Missoula’s signature celebration of the city we live in – and it most definitely does not suck. In fact, it is wonderful, and we think Missoula is kind of like living in Shangri La. Live music, exceptional art, culture, family, fitness and fun abound – and not so coincidentally, so do sustainability initiatives that reduce the carbon footprint of the festival while improving the health of our planet, our community and festival attendees. It’s called being CLIMATE SMART. It has been a Missoula value for a long time, and it is our commitment hosting this party in a special place for many generations to come. As far as the headline goes, we did ask Roots Fest attendees to “stop sucking” their drinks through single use plastic straws last year because we realized we could do better with a simple but impactful change in the way we served drinks at the festival. As a result, we made sure that thousands of unnecessary pieces of plastic never had to end up, at best, in the landfill and, at worst in our rivers and eventually our oceans. According to thelastplasticstraw.org, 500 million single use plastic straws are used and discarded in the United States. That’s 175 billion a year filtering into our landfills and littering the oceans. That is enough to wrap around the Earth’s circumference 2.5 times each day. We are excited to not contribute to that scenario, and we think our cocktails are still delicious. Going straw free is just the start of some very exciting sustainability initiatives lead by Climate Smart Missoula and our awesome volunteer green team at the 2017 River City Roots Festival. Additional ways we are greening the festival include:
Stainless Steel Tumblers
We’re not stopping with eliminating plastic straws. We are also moving toward stainless steel commemorative Roots Fest tumblers intended to be used and reused throughout the weekend, and beyond. There will be a limited run of 500 stainless steel tumblers available this year. If the stainless steel option is a popular choice over the reusable plastic cups, and we think they will be, we will eliminate the reusable plastic at future festivals
Bike Valet
We are excited to partner with Missoula In Motion to offer festival attendees that arrive via their bicycle valet parking service. Simply ride up to the secured area located on the Higgins end of the Art Show and let our volunteers do the rest.
Carbon Free Main Stage
It takes fuel to get the world class musicians to our festival. It also takes power to run the speakers and lights that make dancing on Main Street so fun. We know that when we use energy we leave a carbon footprint that contributes to climate change. We’re committed to neutralizing that contribution with the purchase of carbon credits, which we do annually. That is why we proudly display the “Carbon Neutral” banner prominently on stage. Thanks to GREEN sponsors HomeBase Montana, Mountain Line, NorthWestern Energy, and Territorial Landworks, we have resources to minimize our footprint while maximizing fun at this year’s Roots Festival.
Partnering artnering to Build Better Communities
ZERO by FIFTY vending
In conjunction with the City’s ZERO by FIFTY zero waste initiative, we have asked vendors to take voluntary actions to reduce what we send to the landfill from our food court. Each participating vendor will display the ZERO by FIFTY logo during the festival. Be sure to thank them for their efforts as you eat their delicious food. The Badlander (who is helping to host the Roots Fest street bars), Baskin Robbins, Five on Black, Lil’ Orbits, Sa Wad Dee and Taste of the Old World are doing their part to contribute to ZERO by FIFTY.
Proud to support the 2017 River City Roots Festival.
All-In-One Recycling Stations and Zero Waste Ambassadors We are partnering with Republic Services to offer their new All-In-One Recycling service throughout the festival. In addition, we’ll have Climate Smart Missoula Green Team volunteers acting as zero waste ambassadors at as many of these zero waste stations as possible for the duration of the festival. Let’s reduce contamination and raise awareness together. Be sure to give them a high five.

Downtown sidewalk sale
W
hile it’s easy to get pulled into the “ease” of shopping at big box stores or staying at home to shop online, there are many great local businesses that Missoula has to offer. You’re more likely to find unique and locally made items that you wouldn’t be able to purchase anywhere else, and the experience of shopping at a local store is more personal with many of your one-on-one interactions being with the business owner themselves. In a small community such as Missoula, it is important to remember that shopping locally creates a cycle of money that strengthens the entire community. While you’re in Downtown Missoula during Roots Fest, we hope you’ll venture out and explore our fantastic Downtown shops and boutiques. The Downtown retailers will once again be holding the “Roots Hang-Over” Sidewalk sale on Sunday, August 27! Dozens of unique and locally owned shops will open their doors and decorate their sidewalks with discounted merchandise for the benefit of shoppers. Those attending this exciting sidewalk sale should expect to find an array of retailers offering everything from home goods, to jewelry, to locally sourced items, to hiking gear, to footwear, and more! Not only will shoppers find all kinds of unique and fun gifts, but participating retailers will also have extra goodies such as mimosas, Bloody Marys, and other treats. Roots goers are encouraged to keep the good times rolling right through the Sunday of Roots Fest by coming Downtown, finding a great deal, and a cure for their “Roots Hang-Over” blues!

What to know about roots fest
What It Takes to Make This Festival
• $120,000: Cost to put on Roots Fest. It’s no small cost to put on a festival like this. As with all events produced by the Missoula Downtown Association, Roots Fest is admission FREE. It’s because of our sponsors, as well as attendees taking advantage of our local food vendors and purchasing the wristband/ commemorative cup, that costs associated with the event are covered.
• $80,000+: Amount of sponsorship dollars from local businesses to help produce Roots Fest; nearly $30,000 is in trade-out services
• 15,000+: number of attendees roaming the streets of Downtown Missoula across both days
• Looking for some exercise? A 4-mile fun run is slated for Saturday morning and is open to everyone with all abilities. Register online at www.rivercityrootsfestival. com or in person at the Runner’s Edge.
• Please do not bring your own food and beverages into the festival area. Your purchases from our vendors support locally-owned businesses and help cover the hard costs to help keep this festival ADMISSION FREE FOR ALL.
• Adult beverages are available: purchase your wristband and commemorative cup first, then get in line for a drink. Bring your ID; you will not be able to drink without it. • You must have an official Roots Fest Wristband to drink within the festival area.
• Your first drink is FREE, thanks to the Missoula Downtown Association.
• 1,000 t-shirts for sale, for runners, and for our volunteers
• 5,000 beer cups bought from a local business to help keep the event green and reduce waste • 250 volunteers needed to make Roots Fest come alive
• 3 Production Partners: the City of Missoula, Run Wild Missoula, and Climate Smart Missoula all help with various pieces so Roots runs smoothly
• 10 bands, 30 artists, 20 local food vendors, 400+ runners, and 20+ children’s organizations make this party!
Arriving at the Festival • We love Roots Festers who arrive via alternative transportation: walk, bike, or bus
• Walk the trails: Missoula has an amazing trail system - park outside of Downtown and walk with ease along our beautiful river.
• Ride the bike: please park your bike at one of the many bike racks throughout Downtown, including the bike corral in Caras Park. New this year will be a bike valet service located on E. Main. Please dismount and walk your bike inside the festival area.
• Ride the Line: Mountain Line is now Zero-Fare and all routes lead to Downtown Missoula. Visit www.mountainline.com to find your route or download their app. Mountain Line is also a major sponsor of Roots Fest.
• Vehicle users: If you drive your car, festival parking is available at the Central Park (enter from Main or Ryman; exit from Ryman only), Park Place, and Bank Street parking structures, as well as throughout the riverfront area near Caras Park.
• Stay inside the festival area with your adult beverages. If you take your drink outside the barricades, you risk getting an Open Container ticket.
• Beverage Garden offerings include Big Sky beer, wine, and specialty cocktails made with locally-sourced liquors from Montana Distillery.
• If you need a band-aid, or maybe you lost or found something, go see the folks in the Volunteer Check-In area inside the Central Park Parking Structure.
Keeping It Green
• Help the Missoula Downtown Association keep Roots Fest Clean & Green by keeping your commemorative cup ($8.00 to purchase; bring your beer cup back the next day and purchase a wristband for $3.00).
• Utilize one of the garbage and recycling stations we have located throughout the festival area. We’re recycling plastic, aluminum, and cardboard. Last year we collected almost 300 pounds of recyclables.
• We provide water refill stations throughout the festival, thanks to our friends at Culligan Water. Use your Roots Fest cup, the water bottle you purchased at the Food Court, or one you brought with you – help us reduce waste by using reusable drinkware.
• Skip the Straw: the Roots Fest bar will not be using straws this year in an effort to reduce plastic use and waste
Please Be Considerate/Safe
• Please do not bring your pets to Roots Fest! Folks with pets will be asked to remain outside the festival area.
• Please be polite to the folks who are serving you. They are volunteering their time.
• Thanks to the Missoula Parking Commission, parking throughout Downtown Missoula is FREE for the entire duration of Roots Fest.
• Please exit the festival area if you would like to smoke. We realize it’s a street festival, but please don’t subject those around you to secondhand smoke.
• If you brought your skateboard, scooter, etc., please refrain from riding them within the festival area.
• Please stay off the railings on top of the parking structure, as well as the sound and staging equipment. We want you to be safe!
