SUPER BOWL GAME DAY

BETTINA HANSEN, Seattle Times

Seahawks linebacker Brock Coyle gets the crowd riled up during a game earlier this season. The former Montana Grizzly will be playing in the Super Bowl as a rookie.

Coyle savors Super season From undrafted free agent to starter in November, ex-Griz has had amazing ride BILL SPELTZ bill.speltz@lee.net

The way Brock Coyle sees it, he’s not just representing the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night in the Super Bowl.

He’s got a reputation to uphold as a former Montana Grizzly. “I just want the fans to know how much pride I take in representing the University of Montana and Montana

in the National Football League,” the rookie linebacker told the Missoulian. “Their support means so much to me, truly it does. “It helps me play harder when I know I have a great fan base behind me, amazing fans. Even in the NFL now I have a good fan base in the 12th Man. And I’ve

got Griz Nation. I’ve got the best fan base in college football and the NFL supporting me, so I feel very blessed.” For two seasons Coyle led Montana in tackles with his rare quickness and ball hawking at middle linebacker. But when draft day came last spring, his name was not called and many

wondered how much of a shot the undrafted free agent would get when he was invited to join the most intimidating defense in the NFL. With diligence and a little good fortune, he managed to earn the starting job for Seattle’s preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. That led to even bigger things.

“It’s been amazing, it really has,” he offered. “My first preseason game, my first NFL game ever against (Broncos QB) Peyton Manning starting for the Seattle Seahawks at middle linebacker while Bobby Wagner was hurt … “Then to end up starting two games as a rookie against the Raiders and

SUPER BOWL GAME DAY the Giants and then being a contributor on special teams … It’s just been an amazing journey that I feel throughout my football career God has prepared me for these moments, for a season like this when these opportunities arise. I was prepared to take advantage of them and it’s led me to this point.” Coyle’s rookie season hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. He had a gluteus injury that sidelined him from practice in November. He played through it in a starting role against the Giants, earning the respect of his teammates and coaches. “He’s strong, and he’s a guy that you know that he’s going to do everything, look at all the details, he’s going to dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s,” linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. told ESPN 710 Seattle. “He’s really, really sharp in that fashion.” While Coyle is not above making a rookie mistake every now and then, even the best of his peers have gained an appreciation for his skill set. “He’s a guy who has a knack for the ball,” Seahawks second team All-Pro safety Kam Chancellor told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. “He shows want-to. He shows that he wants to learn and he’s learning every day.” If Coyle’s No. 52 is called against the New England Patriots, it will

most likely come on special teams. Of his 11 tackles this season, six have come in kick coverage situations, including an assist in the Seahawks’ memorable playoff win over the team he pulled for as a college student, the Green Bay Packers. Seattle trailed Green Bay 19-7 in the fourth quarter before rallying to win in overtime, 28-22. “It’s a mind set of this team, a mind set of our head coach, a mind set of our leaders on this team just to finish — always finish and compete,” Coyle said. “That’s truly what we did and that’s a lesson about never giving up that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. “We were down 12 points with five turnovers, just the resiliency of the team and everything. It was just as much that we never gave up. We’re never out of the fight and we all just plugged away and we came out victorious and we’re playing in the Super Bowl.” Coyle honed his mental and physical toughness on the ski slopes as a kid. Growing up in the shadow of Big Sky Mountain in Bozeman, he was heavy into downhill racing. One NorAm event he remembers vividly was held near Whitefish on Big Mountain’s legendary Big Ursa run. “It’s the fastest race you can do,” he said of his downhill discipline. “When you see it in the Olympics they can get up

to I’m sure like 70 mph. “I remember (Big Ursa) because I was probably the most nervous with the danger factor. You can get severely hurt. I had to mentally get prepared to race this dangerous course, get intense and focused. I would replay the course in my mind so that when I raced I had already gone over it multiple times. I do that with football, too, when I visualize a play and what’s coming.” Coyle’s evolution as a linebacker took time. As a young Grizzly he was forced to redshirt after shoulder surgery in 2010. The humbling experience made him even more determined to play at a high level and he credits former teammates Zack Wagenmann and Jordan Tripp with pushing him to dig deep in the weight room. These days Brock has a long list of teammates that push him on a daily basis. The Seahawks are notorious for stretching NFL mandates in their full-contact practices, so coasting is hardly an option. “It’s very intense,” Brock said. “We practice at full speed and it’s highly competitive. “We compete all the time. I mean every single drill we do is a competition. We’ve got the music playing. It’s a highenergy environment. That rolls over to the games.” Coyle’s approach to tackling hasn’t changed much since his days in maroon and silver.

“He’s a guy who has a knack for the ball. He shows want-to. He shows that he wants to learn and he’s learning every day.” Seattle All-Pro safety Kam Chancellor

“He’s strong, and he’s a guy that you know that he’s going to do everything, look at all the details, he’s going to dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s. He’s really, really sharp in that fashion.” Seattle LB coach Ken Norton Jr. “You have to take your shot and wrap up and be physical,” he said. “That’s the biggest thing. You have to make sure you hit him and he doesn’t hit you. You have to bring that physical nature and violence to defense.” Reaching the Super Bowl took days to sink in for Coyle. One reason is that he and his teammates were walking on air for a while after their epic comeback against the Packers. “Just that game, to be a part of one of the greatest, if not the greatest

comeback in NFL playoff history,” Coyle said, “and to win the NFC championship, to go to the Super Bowl and just to play for such a great organization in the Seahawks, I just feel very blessed to be a part of this team.” Brock says it starts at the top with head coach Pete Carroll. “You hear the quote ‘attitude reflects leadership’ and I think you absolutely see that in our team” Coyle said. “The way we approach the game of football and our jobs, it reflects the leadership of Coach Carroll.

“He comes in every single day with high energy and enthusiasm. He makes you want to play football for him. He makes you love the game every day. It’s a grind of a season but every single day he makes it fun. He makes it a game you want to play and play hard for him.” The Seahawks may need to be at their best to beat the Patriots on Sunday. The Seattle defense in particular has a tall task, pitted against arguably the best clutch quarterback in NFL history in Tom Brady. “Obviously they’re a great team with arguably one of the greatest coaches of all time in (Bill) Belichick and one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in Tom Brady,” Coyle said. “It’s just a storied franchise and I’m looking forward to playing a great football team.”

SUPER BOWL GAME DAY

HOW WE SEE THE SUPER BOWL

Missoulian scores it a split decision BOB MESEROLL bmeseroll@missoulian.com

Let’s get right to the point: I’m going to have a hard time rooting for either team to win the Super Bowl. Is anyone else tired of Marshawn Lynch? The crotch-grabbing, mediasnubbing, beast-mode running back for the Seattle Seahawks is getting on my nerves. First off, I can think of no circumstance under which grabbing your crotch is acceptable in public. Can he think of no other way to express himself? And while many people might justify his reluctance to talk to the media, what he’s really doing is refusing to talk to his fans, who read, watch and listen to the media. As much as the Seahawks value their “12s,” Lynch would be wise to remember who he’s snubbing when he’s giving childish answers to legitimate questions from the media. And who can forget Richard Sherman’s rant after the Seahawks won the NFC championship game last season? And then there’s the Patriots, where Bill Belichick refuses to acknowledge that he has fostered a culture of cheating dating back to “Spygate,” for which he was fined $500,000 in addition to a penalty of $250,000 and a lost draft pick for the franchise.

ELAINE THOMPSON, Associated Press

Seattle fans hold up a picture of Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch before a playoff game in Seattle. If the coach condones that type of activity, why would he be surprised if his players are behind “Deflate-gate?” The under-inflated footballs are not the reason the Patriots won the AFC championship game, but that culture of dishonesty has turned me against Tom Brady and the Pats. So that brings us back to who will win Sunday’s game. Despite my reservations, I’ll go with the Seahawks for two reasons: Brock Coyle and

Russell Wilson. Coyle’s a Montana kid who played somewhat in the shadows of more highly acclaimed linebackers during his career with the Griz. How can I not root for a Montana kid who made the Seahawks’ roster as a free agent? I’m a Wisconsin Badger; Russell Wilson’s a Wisconsin Badger. Enough said. So I’ll pick the Seahawks 31-27, but if you’re looking for me on Sunday, I’ll be watching the final round of the

Waste Management Open, where the competitors call penalties on themselves. Here are the picks from the rest of the staff: Bill Speltz: Patriots 28, Seahawks 21 Back at the start of the season I picked New England to win it all and I’m sticking with America’s (most disliked) Team. In a nutshell, QB Tom Brady and TE Rob Gronkowski are tough to contain and New England’s running game is rock solid. Plus the

Seahawks aren’t as formidable away from their home digs, losing road decisions at San Diego, St. Louis and Kansas City this season. The footballs are going to have too much air for Brady’s liking but he will find a way to overcome. Kyle Houghtaling: Seahawks 24, Patriots 20. Don’t worry, any distraction from Deflategate should be off the mind of three-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady come Super Bowl Sunday, but he’ll have

plenty of trouble coming up with ways to beat the Seahawks’ secondary. Brady could very well be the best quarterback of his era, but he’s matched up against a defense that is first in the NFL this season in passing yards allowed per game (185) and points scored per game (15.9). That’s scary good, and it’s coming from a squad that had no trouble humanizing another future Hall of Famer in the season’s biggest game a year ago. This year’s Patriots’ defense may be the best it has been since it won the Super Bowl in 2001 with Teddy Bruschi and company, but the Seahawks are just too balanced (first in rushing yards, 10th in points scored). As much as it pains a 49ers fan to say it, I think the Seahawks go back to back — albeit in a much closer matchup than last year’s game — unless Brady can pull some magic. AJ Mazzolini: Patriots 23, Seahawks 16. With Brady and his receiving corps clicking — and any other help the Patriots seem to be getting — I think New England is the team to beat. Take away Seattle’s home-field advantage with a neutral location and this is the year that the Pats get back on top. Even with a loss, Russell Wilson is due for a major payday, though.

a true stud pass rusher or a star defensive back (until signing Darrelle Revis this season), and they’ve also had some unfortunate injuries, particularly to linebacker Jerod Mayo. Unbalanced offense. Belichick has been willing to make do with inconsistent running backs or retreads, and he also has soured on some of them, especially if they can’t hold onto the football. That disorder in the backfield has put more pressure on Brady and the passing game. Fortunately for New England, Brady is an all-time great. But the changing cast behind him can be disruptive. Of course, since that most recent Super Bowl win, he’s had the likes of Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski and Edelman to throw to. Any QB would like that group. Yet opponents have found in the playoffs that they rarely will be beaten by the Patriots’ run game, so they have loaded up on the pass rush, on coverage, and on making Brady uncomfortable. No fear. The opposition, especially when the Patriots were winning their past two titles, often reacted to what New England was doing instead of emphasizing their own strengths. That changed altogether in the 2008 Super Bowl, when the Giants unleashed monstrous pressure on Brady, didn’t make mistakes on either side of the ball, and shattered the Patriots’ chase of perfection.

Seahawks vs. Patriots: Key matchups in Super Bowl BARRY WILNER Associated Press

Matchups for the Super Bowl on Feb. 1 between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots at University of Phoenix Stadium: When the Seahawks (14-4) have the ball: If the Patriots can tame the Beast, they will have a big head start toward a fourth NFL championship since 2001. RB Marshawn Lynch (24) will try to impose his will on a solid but not overwhelming defense led by DT Vince Wilfork (75), DE Rob Ninkovich (50), LBs Jamie Collins (91) and Dont’a Hightower (54). If Lynch is slowed, that leaves the onus for running on QB Russell Wilson (3). While highly capable — he rushed for 849 yards and six TDs in 2014 — Wilson would prefer balance on offense. When he throws, he must avoid the interceptions that plagued him vs. Green Bay for the NFC title. Not that Wilson was always off-target, with two of his picks being off tips by WR Jermaine Kearse (15). But he was not nearly as precise as usual. Kearse, who caught the winning TD pass in the past two NFC title matches, was targeted on all four interceptions against the Packers. He’ll see plenty of CBs Darrelle Revis (24) and Brandon Browner (39), a Seahawk last season, and could struggle getting open deep. S Devin McCourty (32) also will help in coverage on WR Doug Baldwin (89) and TE Luke Willson (82). One thing Seattle won’t do is lose faith even when

things aren’t working on offense. And behind an unsung offensive line led by LT Russell Okung (76) and C Max Unger (60), they won’t back off, either. When the Patriots (14-4) have the ball: Unquestionably the key matchup, as it often is these days when the Patriots are on the field, will be All-Pro TE Rob Gronkowski (87) against the legions trying to cover him. However, for Seattle’s Legion of Boom, much of the assignment will fall to S Kam Chancellor (31). Chancellor has the size (6-3, 232), speed and tackling skills to somewhat neutralize Gronkowski. If he can do that, it frees All-Pro S Earl Thomas (29) to help with versatile WR Julian Edelman (11), who mostly will draw All-Pro CB Richard Sherman (25) in coverage. QB Tom Brady (12) is particularly comfortable throwing to Gronk and Edelman, and the Seahawks want to force him to look at others instead. But even if the coverage is strong, Seattle must get pressure from pass rushers DEs Michael Bennett (72) and Cliff Avril (56) and LBs Bobby Wagner (54), an All-Pro, and Bruce Irvin (51). Brady is most vulnerable — which isn’t very vulnerable — when he has to throw before he wants to and can’t set his feet. That means an unheralded offensive line featuring tackles Sebastian Vollmer (76) and Nate Solder (77) needs to be steady. Green Bay showed the Seahawks can be run on, so RB LeGarrette Blount (29) could wind up being a featured player.

CHARLES KRUPA, Associated Press

New england patriots quarterback Tom brady throws a pass during the first half of the AFC championship game against the Indianapolis Colts in Foxborough, Mass. Special Teams: Although the Seahawks were not great on special teams this season, they were spectacular in beating Green Bay. A fake field goal pass for a TD by holder Jon Ryan (9) — one of the NFL’s most accurate punters — and an onside kick that kept them alive for the NFC title won’t be forgotten in the Pacific Northwest. Generally, though, New England has the edge here. Coverage is very good on punt and kickoff returns, led by Pro Bowler Matthew Slater (18). Edelman (11) was second in the NFL with 12 yards per punt return and had one for an 84-yard TD. Stephen Gostkowski (3) missed only two field goals and led the NFL with 156 points. Coaching: Pete Carroll’s revenge? It’s not a major story line, but it should be recognized that Carroll preceded Bill Belichick in New England. He wasn’t a bad coach there, either, going 28-23, but that pales compared to Belichick’s numbers.

No team brings more energy to the field than the Seahawks, and it stems from Carroll. He always has the pulse of his team:

Carroll saw how Seattle was suffering from a Super Bowl hangover early in the schedule. He not only got the Seahawks to snap out of it, but reach peak form down the stretch — at least until last week, when they got lucky, too. Belichick just surpassed Tom Landry’s mark for postseason victories (21). Regardless of the findings of the NFL’s probe into under-inflated footballs in the AFC championship contest, he is known as an innovator — just as much as he is known for stretching the parameters of the rulebook. Belichick keeps things fresh by finding new ways to exploit the opposition. He will have something unusual lined up for Carroll and the Seahawks.

1101 stRAND AVE

Intangibles: Seattle seeks to become the first repeat winner since the Patriots managed it a decade ago. A victory would stamp these Seahawks as an all-time great team, particularly having beaten Peyton Manning and Brady in successive Super Bowls. The Seahawks also come off a mediocre performance in the NFC title game, which should spur them on. New England, of course, doesn’t want to add a stigma of Super Bowl loser by dropping three in a row after winning in its first three trips with Brady and Belichick. Brady can equal Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana with four Super Bowl rings, while Belichick can tie Chuck Noll with four.
