Parallel (adj.) Occurring or existing at the same time or in a similar way; corresponding : a parallel universe | they shared an apartment in Dallas while establishing parallel careers. (Oxford dictionary) 1

Alter ego

“An alter ego (Latin, “the other I”) is a second self, a second personality within a person, who is often oblivious to the persona’s actions. It was coined in the early nineteenth century when dissociative identity disorder was first described by psychologists. A person with an alter ego is said to lead a double life.”(wikipedia.org) 2

In Pre-Crisis comic books, superheroes and their secret identities are often considered alter egos. (wikipedia.org) 3

“Alter egos are used by numerous performing artists who use stage or screen personae both to entertain audiences and to explore new identities for themselves. An early example of a musical group to make use of alter egos was The Beatles, who recorded and performed as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in order “to alter our egos, free ourselves and have a lot of fun”.” (wikipedia.org)

Online study Facebook vs real life

“I remember life before all this crazy stalking business begin, when a stalker was someone who followed you around and hid outside in the bushes. Were are all guilty of it, looking up someone who we used to go to school with, someone we used to date, someone we used to like, or currently do. [...] Thank you facebook for turning me into a stalker. And I know I am not the only one guilty of this. (talesofatwentysomething.wordpress.com) 5

How facebook would be in real life? This film was made to explore the issues around ENO’s production of Nico Muhly’s new opera ‘Two Boys’. 7

Online

Offline

“The problem is that the social networks we’re creating online don’t match the social networks we already have offline. This creates many problems, and a few opportunities.” (Adam, 2010) 8

“New technology doesn’t change how our brains work. Social networks are not new. For thousands of years, people have formed into groups, built strong and weak relationships with others, formed allegiances, and spread rumor and gossip. The emergence of the social web is simply our online world catching up with our offline world. As technology changes the tools we use to communicate, we still use the same behavior patterns that we evolved over those thousands of years.” (Adam, 2010) 9

“This problem isn’t just limited to IM, we see it on social networks too, people self-censor all the time. “(Adam, 2010) 10

“Strong ties are the people you care about most. Your family. People often refer to strong ties as their “circle of trust.” Weak ties are people you know, but don’t care much about. Typically, we communicate with weak ties infrequently. Most of us can only stay up-todate with up to 150 weak ties. Online social networks make it easier to reconnect and catch up with weak ties “(Adam, 2010) 11

Offline study To have broad understanding about the area of study, I also researched on everyday’s life behaviour and how we live our double lives in the real world in four categories: art, literature, everyday’s life, secret.

Possible Outcome

This possible outcome was a distorted mirror iPhone application. The users can look to the distorted mirror and appreciate their distorted self which will be more skinny, white, dark or as they can see as they are more beautiful. After that, they can take a perfect picture and post on social network. 48

Creative Coordinate The final outcome is an online platform that can contain and protect our content that is not ready to be told to anyone. The story they wrote will be unveiled to the person they chose by publishing all contents to a memory book after their death.

I have set up 3 creative coordinates to help in visualizing and creating the tone of voice which are secret, trust and secure. From the 3 words, I did mind mapping shown below to clarify and get more ideas form them.
