INTRODUCTION TO CARPENTRY AND OFFSITE CONTRUCTION The building and construction industry continues to be a strong growth area in Queensland across both residential and commercial sectors with the number of job openings nation-wide expected to exceed 50,000 in the next five years. As Australia’s third largest industry, building and construction employs over one million workers who produce the buildings and infrastructure which are essential for other industries to operate. Skilled workers are employed across both the public and private sectors in engineering constructions, nonresidential building and residential building. Industry sectors include construction,

demolition, renovation, maintenance or repair of building and infrastructure. A greater need for advanced technical skills in building and construction has resulted in high demand for skilled construction workers across carpentry, furniture making, joinery and shopfitting. TAFE Queensland also provides pathways for current construction industry workers to take the next step in developing their own career. We deliver the courses needed to gain advanced building and construction skills as well as the requirements needed to apply for a QBCC licenses for low rise, medium rise and open buildings.

This knowledge is then shared with our partners, employers, apprentice and students.

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION TRAINING FACILITIES Our state-of-the art building and construction workshop at Acacia Ridge spans across over 10,000 square metres and is complimented by eight modern classrooms as well as aopen area real-world simulation for site excavation works and restricted height scaffolding. Our workshops at Bracken Ridge and Alexandra Hills are also a hive of activity where students can learn how to install flooring systems, erect wall frames and roof trusses, hang doors and windows, and apply decorative trims. Carpentry students have access to industrystandard hand and power tools as well as a wide range of timber to work with. Shopfitting, furniture making, joinery and cabinet making students are taught the entire furniture-making process from computer-aided design (CAD) right through to construction in our purpose-built, modern workshops and classrooms. Training is always provided using the latest technologies including state-of-the-art computer numerical control (CNC) machines, lathes mills, and wall saws and we guarantee a comprehensive learning experience encompassing both traditional and modern furniture-making technology.

ENTRY LEVEL Our pre-apprenticeship programs provide the basic skills and knowledge needed to obtain entry level employment or to pursue an apprenticeship in the building and construction field. High school students can jump start their career by choosing a TAFE at School course to gain a vocational qualification. Learn to join solid timber, make timber joints and assemble furniture components for built-in cabinets such as those used in kitchens and bathrooms. Students will learn how to use hand and power tools, work as part of a team, and develop general construction skills in a workplace simulated training environment.

Apprentices will learn how to construct, install, finish and repair structures and fixtures for residential, commercial and industrial developments. Work with a range of tools, equipment and materials to construct frames for walls and ceilings, construct pitched and advanced roofs and eaves, and erect and dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on the ground.

FLEXIBLE TRAINING OPTIONS We offer on-campus, online, workplace, mixed-mode and flexible delivery training options. We will work to find a training outcome to suit each business’s needs.

On-Campus block training Training is delivered in study blocks of one to six weeks at one of our state-of- the-art training facilities.
