The heavy commercial industry is currently undergoing rapid changes due technological advancements which have brought a shift towards automation and computer controlled diagnostics. These advancements are anticipated to impact repair technologies, the use of guidance and telematics systems, hybrid systems and electronic drive technology.
Growth in the Queensland road transport and mobile transport industries has resulted in a need for more skilled heavy automotive workers. The recent upsurge in the mining sector is also expected to continue to increase within Queensland, providing more opportunities for local companies.

To keep up to date with industry advancements TAFE Queensland are building our capabilities to to ensure Queensland’s heavy commercial vehicle workforce are skilled and ready for these emerging technologies. We continue to work closely with industry to ensure relevant training is delivered in response to the evolving technologies and industry practices in areas such as road transport, rail, mining and marine.
The Queensland Government investment in the defence industry and building defence capabilities has also opened up opportunities across automotive, manufacturing, maritime and engineering businesses to upskill their workforces in preparation for this growth area. We predict that the need for skilled heavy automotive trade workers will increase in order to support the supply chains. At TAFE Queensland we work closely with industry to ensure industry relevant training is delivered in response to the changes in heavy vehicle technologies and industry practices.

AUTOMOTIVE TRAINING FACILIITIES Our automotive training facilities include 40 industry-standard classrooms and 20 workshops which feature two chassis and two engine dynamometers, engine diagnostic equipment, electrical test benches, vehicle hoists, as well as hydraulics and pneumatics labs and workshops. Our students and apprentices train on state-of-the-art wheel alignment and brake testing, with specialised training rooms for diesel fuel injection equipment, auto electrical, and airconditioning. This is complemented by over 15 million dollars worth of heavy vehicle trucks, mobile plant components, tools and equipment provided through our partnerships with Iveco, Mack, Kenworth Trucks, Komatsu, Volvo and Caterpillar Australia.

ENTRY LEVEL PRE-APPRENTICESHIPS Our pre-apprenticeship programs provide the basic skills and knowledge needed to obtain entry level employment or to pursue an automotive apprenticeship. High school students can jump start their career by choosing a TAFE at School course to gain a vocational qualification. Students may gain valuable credits towards apprenticeship and diploma courses as well as gaining direct entry into our diploma courses upon completion.
