INTRODUCTION TO LIGHT AUTOMOTIVE Get hands on with our practical training and learn to repair and service small to medium sized vehicle engines and parts including cooling, braking, clutch, steering, suspension and exhaust systems. The automotive industry is progressing rapidly, with innovations such as electric and hybrid vehicles dominating the market. TAFE Queensland partner with industry to ensure our students and apprentices are working on the latest industry equipment and vehicles.

TAFE Queensland offers a comprehensive range of light automotive courses, from pre-apprenticeship programs through to apprenticeship and post-trade specialisations. Choose from a range of automotive specialisations including cylinder head reconditioning, LPG installation, mechanical overhauling, servicing technology, air conditioning, underbody technology, tyre servicing, and outdoor power equipment.

AUTOMOTIVE TRAINING FACILIITIES We have a range of specialist hybrid, electrical and air-conditioning training rooms equipped with resources including chassis and engine dynometers, vehicle hoists, diagnostic testing stations, electrical test benches and engine reconditioning equipment, as well as wheel alignment and brake testing stations. With an additional $20 million worth of resources, tools and equipment and vehicles donated by industry clients including Toyota, Nissan and Holden, we produce highly competent and qualified automotive technicians.

ENTRY LEVEL Our pre-apprenticeship programs provide the basic skills and knowledge needed to obtain entry level employment or to pursue an automotive apprenticeship.

High school students can jump start their career by choosing a TAFE at School course to gain a vocational qualification. Students may gain valuable credits towards apprenticeship or diploma courses as well as gaining direct entry into our diploma courses upon completion.

This course sets students on the path to finding an apprenticeship in a wide range of automotive occupations including light vehicle mechanic, automotive electrician or outdoor power equipment technician. This course also opens the door to employment as a vehicle service assistant or automotive parts interpreter.

This course is a stepping stone to an apprenticeship or traineeship in a range of workplaces including under body repair, tyre and brake front end specialists, auto electrical, outboard mechanical, motor bike mechanical, spare parts sales and general automotive repairs.

Learn to perform basic diagnostic procedures, install, test and repair wiring on vehicle lighting systems and electrical security components, install ancillary electrical equipment, perform minor repairs to electrical circuits, inspect and service batteries, and more.


CERTIFICATE II IN AUTOMOTIVE CYLINDER HEAD RECONDITIONING (LIGHT VEHICLE) AUR21516 TAFE AT SCHOOL/ PRE-APPRENTICESHIP This course provides students the skills to perform a range of tasks related to the service and repair of engine cylinder heads and other components of light or heavy vehicles. Students will learn how to identify automotive faults and use a range of tools and equipment to complete basic inspection and service of automotive systems such as engines and cooling systems.

Students will also learn how to perform minor repairs to tyres and wheels, and install basic accessory fittings.

Apprentices will learn how to diagnose faults and install and repair electrical systems in vehicles including lighting and wiring, ignition, instruments and warning systems.

Develop skills in sales and marketing including merchandising and promotion, interacting with and building customer relations, and responding to customer enquiries and complaints. Develop the practical skills and knowledge required to undertake repair and servicing of electrical and mechanical outdoor power equipment including lawn mowers, chainsaws, brush cutters, pumps and other similar equipment. Learn how to identify the components of small engines, perform daily maintenance, and carry out safe refuelling and pre-start checks.

Gain the practical skills and knowledge to service and repair the mechanical parts of a motor vehicle such as the engine, transmission and suspension systems.

CERTIFICATE II IN AUTOMOTIVE AIR-CONDITIONING TECHNOLOGY REFRIGERANT HANDLING LICENCE AUR20218 POST TRADE SPECIALISATION LICENCE Learn to service, diagnose, repair and recover refrigerant in automotive air-conditioning systems safely. This course teaches apprentices to comply with laws and regulations regarding ozone protection and synthetic gas. Graduates can apply for an Automotive Refrigerant Handling Licence from the Australian Refrigerant Council to work on air-conditioning equipment in light, heavy and commercial vehicles, and in automotive plant and equipment.
