Providing training solutions for defence, advanced manufacturing, engineering and maritime sectors.

TAFE QUEENSLAND RTO 0275 | CRICOS No. 03020E

ADVANCED TRAINING TO SECURE FUTURE JOBS FOR QUEENSLAND’S WELDERS TAFE Queensland, along with the Queensland Government and Weld Australia, are set to revolutionise welder training. With the implementation of advanced technology and coursework, Queenslanders will be trained faster, safer and more effectively in the welding qualifications that are in high demand by the state’s defence and manufacturing industries whilst building sovereign capability.

COURSE IN FUSION WELDING TO ISO 9606 FOR EXPERIENCED WELDERS (22642VIC) As identified by the peak welding body, Weld Australia, there is a growing demand for ISO 9606 skilled welders to support major projects in the defence, maritime, aircraft, engineering and advanced manufacturing sectors. This course is intended to upskill experienced welders to the ISO 9606-1:2017 Qualification - Fusion Welding international welding standard, and is particularly applicable for defence-related industries. It aims to assist experienced welders and their employers establish globally competitive capabilities. TAFE Queensland will be training ISO 9606 participants using the latest welding technology – including Augmented Reality (AR) welding simulators provided by the Queensland Government, and traditional ‘live arc’ welders. Training with the AR simulators will enable trainees to meet the ISO standard in less time than traditional training models, by offering instant feedback on a weld including corrections and tips for improvements in real-time.

AUGMENTED REALITY WELDERS TAFE Queensland is equipped to support world-class training for defence primes, supply chains and advanced manufacturing industry sectors. Our training campuses state-wide feature state-of-the-art Augmented Reality (AR) training labs, equipped with Soldamatic welding simulators. Soldamatic has the first turn-key welding training solution in the world which utilises advanced AR technology. AR technology offers an enhanced version of reality by overlaying digital and auditory information on top of real-world images. These AR welders use a modified hand piece to read a coded coupon to generate a real-time digital video of the weld, which appears to the user as a realistic metal weld with sparks, fumes and molten metal. This approach presents a number of significant

advantages over traditional welding practice, as it enables the participant to train up to 4 times faster than on traditional welding equipment. The technology provides real-time feedback on the angle of the weld, positioning of the welder, and speed of the weld, and provides an instant report detailing the quality of the weld. This technology also significantly reduces CO2 emissions and exposure to potentially toxic fumes during training. The devices are highly portable, enabling participants to learn in restricted welding positions, and allows users to practice all aspects of specific weld procedures before executing in a live arc environment. The AR welders can be programmed to simulate a variety of welding procedures such as aluminium, carbon, titanium and stainless steel. Please contact TAFE Queensland Corporate Solutions Manager, Garry Hargreaves for further information about access to the AR Welding Simulator Lab.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Who are the ideal candidates for this program? The program is intended to upskill experienced welders in particular to support defence and their supply chain, advanced manufacturing, engineering and martime industies.

overseas and export markets – the ISO 9606 standard is a baseline qualification increasingly required by international fabricators and a prerequisite for the German welding standard DIN 2303.

How is the course structured?

Why is this program important for my staff?

The course includes a mixture of classroom based theory and practical elements, implementing the latest AR welding simulation units and weld–bay real world practical (live arc) welding training and assessment to support ISO 9606 outcomes. Program delivery options include a 2 week full time block, 6 day full time block, night time training, 1 day per week over 10 weeks or 2 days per week over 5 weeks. Will Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) be used? Yes, since the program is primarily aimed at experienced welders, participants will be given the opportunity to ‘test out’ early via a live arc welding test to ensure ISO 9606 outcomes are met. What is the cost of the course? The course costs are fully funded by the Queensland Government, Department of Employment, Small Business and Training. No participant contribution fees are required. This arrangement is limited to 135 ISO 9606 participants (over a 2 year period). Why are you training ISO 9606?

This course supports those organisations who have, or seek, to gain access to major projects, including international defence prime contracts. The first step on this journey to work with primes is to have ISO 9606 qualified staff. Via this course, TAFE Queensland aims to support your organisation gain this highly regarded international standard. How does this ISO 9606 differ from ISO 3834 Certification? The main difference is ISO 9606-1 deals with individuals whereas ISO 3834 covers company certification. Is there anywhere I can find out more about the ISO 9606 standard or the ISO 3834 Certification? Yes, Weld Australia is the peak welding industry body, info@weldaustralia.com.au or for technical support ring 1800 620 820.
