ELECTROTECHNOLOGY TRAINING FACILITIES At TAFE Queensland we have over $30 million worth of facilities for our electrotechnology and utility apprentices and students. Purpose-built in consultation with industry, our modern and hightech classrooms and workshops simulate commercial and residential environments, allowing us to train highly skilled and competent tradespeople. Our electrical, electrical fitting and electrical machine repair apprentices at the Acacia Ridge campus study in our $20 million purpose-built training space completed in 2009. The facility boasts 20 high-tech classrooms with specialised motor labs, winding machine rooms and a control circuits/relay logic lab. An electrical training and assessment workshop boasts 58 individual wiring bays and a data and communications workshop complete with 14 individual bays, programmable logic controllers lab and a sustainability deck for photo-voltaic practical activities.

Our refrigeration and air-conditioning training facilities are world-class and renowned in industry. They include an industrial cascade refrigeration system, fully operational service bar, ammonia plant rooms, 20 coldrooms, Valuable Air Volume (VAV) systems, and two air-conditioning plant rooms, as well as hydrocarbon and CO² systems.

ENTRY LEVEL Our pre-apprenticeship programs provide the basic skills and knowledge needed to obtain entry level employment or to pursue an electrical apprenticeship. High school students can jump start their career by choosing a TAFE at School course to gain a vocational qualification. Students may gain valuable credits towards apprenticeship and diploma courses as well as gaining direct entry into our diploma courses upon completion.
CERTIFICATE II IN ELECTROTECHNOLOGY (CAREER START) UEE22011 TAFE AT SCHOOL/ PRE-APPRENTICESHIP Learn the skills needed to safely undertake basic electrotechnology work and solve problems in extra-low voltage single-path and multiple-path direct current circuits. Learn about environmentally sustainable work practices and the selection and use of materials, tools and components for electrical work. This course also covers a General Safety Induction course (White Card) – an industry requirement to work on Queensland construction sites, and some of the units needed for the first stage of an electrical apprenticeship.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration apprentice Patrick Brennan (pictured right) has been one of TAFE Queensland – SkillsTech’s top achievers. Patrick won gold at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships in 2018 and was one of two Queenslanders to compete in Kazan, Russia at the WorldSkills International Competitionin 2019. Patrick is now placed third in the world, proudly taking home a bronze medal for the Australian team.
