?What is the American Chemical Society

Â

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the largest scientific organization in the world. Its members are primarily chemists, chemical engineers and other professionals who work in the field of chemistry or in jobs related to this discipline. ACS has more than 161,000 members. The majority of members live in the Unites States, although there are members from many other countries worldwide. ACS members share ideas with each other and learn about important discoveries in chemistry during the national meetings held in the U.S. and through its websites and the .magazines it publishes ACS members carry out many programs to help the public learn about chemistry. The ACS community activities programs were designed to aid volunteers, by giving them reliable and easy-to-use resources to promote the contributions of chemistry. These :programs include Â

National Chemistry Week (NCW), www.acs.org/ncw, is a program aimed at community exchange. It was designed with the goal of transmitting positive messages to the public about chemistry and achieving effective changes in the public's perception of chemistry. The activities include chemistry experiments, interactive demonstrations, lectures, open houses, displays, contests and games. National Chemistry Week is celebrated annually .during the last week of October Chemists Celebrate Earth Day Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED), www.acs.org/earthday, is an environmental awareness campaign that includes activities designed to enhance public awareness of important contributions made through chemistry in preserving our planet and improving .our environment. Earth Day is celebrated every April 22nd To obtain advice, guidance or answers regarding community interaction, please contact the team in the Office of International Activities, which can also put you in touch with . other ACS offices and members Office of International Activities American Chemical Society Sixteenth St., NW, Washington, DC 20036 1155
