EDITOR’S LETTER

SOLO Inspo

EVER since I can remember, I’ve wanted to go to Greece. And while it took me more than a few decades to finally set foot on its storied shores, I now daydream about living the expat life on Kéa Island. For years, I’ve imagined, and at times even planned, several Greece escapes: first with my teen crush and his Greek family who invited me to Thessaloniki (my protective father understandably wouldn’t have it), then on a girls getaway (Covid had other plans), and finally with my son (football camp currently trumps Europe). So when an opportunity recently arose to not just visit Athens and Kéa, but to experience them from two anticipated One&Only resorts, I couldn’t wait for my passport stamp.

During my dreamy week in Greece (see page 50), I met longtime locals, including a third-generation beekeeper, an expedition scuba diver, talented chefs, a historian, and a style icon. I also spent ample time simply staring at the Aegean Sea, a vision that’s now my new mental happy place. And ah, Athens! Exploring the Athenian Riviera with One&Only was an indelible entrée to chic design, stellar global cuisine, and private tours to the city’s famous ruins. Yet it’s the in-between moments that will stick with me forever: swapping favorite concert stories with drivers, learning about Greek wines from local sommeliers, and meeting brave adventurers from other countries. And it was because I journeyed solo—fully immersed in new conversations, sights, and people—that my trip turned into an extra-amazing experience. So whether you are contemplating traveling with a partner, a group of friends, or going it alone, I hope that you’ll find inspiration within these pages to just go!

Happy Travels,

The Best of THE WEST

In the wilds of Western Montana, The Resort at Paws Up is the place for fall foliage and a winter paradise.

AFTER a morning on horseback through towering pines on snowy woodland trails, followed by a nourishing lunch at the bistro beside the stables, we’ve arrived at the mountaintop lodge, where our plan is to shoot skeet before we lose the light. But here we are, standing with our guide by the first station for 10 minutes, ignoring the course and transfixed instead by the spectacle of a red-tailed hawk battling a bald eagle for what might be a marmot, unfortunately spotted while scampering through the sagebrush meadow in the distance.

Come for the activities—from fly fishing and mountain biking to ropes courses and go-karts—and stay for the unforgettable wildlife scene. That’s what we discovered at The Resort at Paws Up, a sprawling luxury adventure ranch just outside Missoula, Montana. While some call fall and winter here “off season,” it’s actually primetime for beauty and adventure.

Guests have full reign of this private, 37,000-acre working ranch and wilderness expanse, with the cold, blue Blackfoot River running right through it. At our disposal are expert nature and adventure guides who love what they do, yearround. So for couples, families, even the occasional famous rock band seeking an authentic, active travel experience, the resort has earned “go-to” status.

In fact, they say that this is where the term glamping was coined for the “glamorous camping” across 36 luxe tents, all with en-suite bathrooms, heated floors and luscious bedding.

But now, it’s cozy cabin season. At nearly 4:30 p.m., the sky is painted with dusk colors. We fix hot toddies, kick back in plush leather club chairs, and put our feet up by the fire in our handsome private cabin, one of 28 accommodations of various sizes scattered across the property. Nearby is the green o (intentionally lowercased to match its laid-back vibe), the resort’s adults-only partner resort, featuring 12 designforward “hauses. ” We’re a short, scenic walk to the ranch’s restaurants: Trough for laid-back breakfast and lunch (don’t miss the huckleberry pancakes), Pomp for fine dining, and the green o’s modern and elegant Social Haus. But for this magic hour, we relax and enjoy the show of nature, feeling like we have the wilderness all to ourselves. – alexandra marvar

JOIE DE VIVRE

Luxury Gold brings you up close and personal with the delights of Southern France.

THE best vacations can be measured by time—time to explore, time to relax, time to learn, and time to soak it all in. That’s the very impetus behind Luxury Gold’s small group journeys throughout Europe. The exclusive tours bring you into the heart of European culture, architecture, winemaking, and cuisine, inviting you to help curate your own experiences—none of which are ever rushed so you have ample time for discovery. And with an average of only 20 guests, everything about these tours feels customized and personal, with special one-to-one attention from your Travel Concierge.

Perhaps no country better understands the art of time than France, and Luxury Gold’s "Ultimate France" tour is a beautiful example. A haven of tranquility, the journey showcases a different pace of life, with visits meandering from the coast to the countryside, medieval cities to national parks.

It begins in sparkling Monte Carlo, winding down the coast to glamorous Nice and St. Tropez. You’ll experience azure waters, golden beaches, and chic boutiques, as well as major architectural marvels including Nice’s historic city square of Place Masséna—the perfect setting for a morning café or evening rosé.

Then it’s off to the renowned terrain of Aix-en-Provence, where you and a local expert will wander through the painterly region that inspired Paul Cézanne. (Later on in the town of Arles, you’ll explore the spots that influenced Vincent van Gogh). In Calanques National Park and Alpilles Natural Park, you’ll take in limestone cliffs, massive pine forests, and hidden beaches, and sit back in a vintage Citroën for a chauffeured drive through the Luberon mountains to the ultimate destination: a picnic and wine tasting at the Domaine de la Citadelle vineyard, where 12 different grape varieties are grown. In Les Baux, you’ll study the ancient architecture of the Pont du Gard, a three-level bridge carved in limestone, and the Palace of the Popes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated as the largest Gothic building of the Middle Ages.

As for cuisine, there will be food markets in Nice, a Michelin Star meal in St. Tropez, a traditional French cooking class by a famed chef in Lastours, and, of course, leisurely stops for pastries, cheese, and wine all along the way. – sarah taylor asquith

AUTHENTIC TRAVEL

Hoisting its sails by hand, Sea Cloud Cruises provides a beautiful way to voyage by sea.

SEA Cloud Cruises ’ trio of classic windjammer yachts has a rich history that goes back to 1931. That’s when Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress to Post Cereal and General Foods Corporation, commissioned a grand four-masted barque. At the time, it was the largest private yacht in the world, which she would soon rename Sea Cloud. The vessel was eventually chartered by the Navy, served as a weather ship in various capacities, and then, in 1979, meticulously restored by Hamburg, Germany-based Sea Cloud Cruises.

Today, the beautiful Sea Cloud features 32 suites and staterooms, a lounge, and restaurant, much of it with original details such as marble fireplaces and French antiques. In late 2024, Sea Cloud will make journeys through petite boutique ports in Italy, Spain, and Morocco, followed by early 2025 voyages in the Caribbean. April 2025 marks the yacht’s 94th birthday with a celebratory ninenight Mediterranean sailing from Lisbon, Portugal to Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Sea Cloud ’s younger sister ships, Sea Cloud II and Sea Cloud Spirit , were built, respectively, in 2001 and 2021. Sea Cloud II is designed with 47 plush suites and staterooms, combining the amenities of a modern ship with the romance of a classic barque, while Sea Cloud Spirit features 68 spacious suites and staterooms, many with balconies, plus a spa replete with a steam bath and Finnish sauna. Each of the three yachts boasts a luxurious one-to-one guest-tocrew member ratio.

In 2025, standout voyages include culinary-themed cruises with guest chefs joining the ship and reimagining the menus, as well as a Bucket Regatta sailing, bringing travelers up close to the famed event as it traverses through St. Barths, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, and the British Virgin Islands.

Sea Cloud Cruises’ classic yachts are among only a few passenger ships that still hoist sails by hand. (When not riding the winds, the vessels are powered by diesel-electric engines with low-sulfur marine diesel fuel.) The crew scales upwards of 190 feet into the shrouds to release the heavy cloth, and it takes almost an hour for the sails to catch the wind—just like the bygone days of Marjorie Merriweather Post. – sarah taylor asquith

Ride the Wind. There’s nothing more genuine than a voyage aboard a traditional barque. Plan your sailing by entering OFFER M27419 on the website found on the back cover, or call or email us to discover new ways to travel by sea.

An Iconic Stay at Sea

With The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , the renowned brand takes to the open waters.

BECAUSE time is the ultimate luxury, traveling by yacht has become the mark of life-affirming adventure and prestige. After all, yachts are designed to savor time, not save it. Inspired by that very mindset, The Ritz-Carlton has unveiled The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection: bespoke yachting voyages that celebrate the brand’s legendary service, setting a new bar for unrivaled vacations.

The Collection’s inaugural yacht, Evrima, debuted in 2022 and quickly earned acclaim as a premier stay at sea. The 298-guest yacht boasts an abundance of amenities with all-suite ocean-view accommodations—each with a private terrace— as well as six restaurants, two pools, and the famed Ritz-Carlton Spa. The impeccable décor, innovative design, and personalized service add to the allure.

And now, less than two years later, the fleet of yachts is expanding. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will soon introduce Ilma , a 790-foot-long, 448-guest yacht—among the highest ratios of space per guest at sea. A third yacht, Luminara , is set to debut in the summer of 2025. On each vessel, guests can expect meticulous Ritz-Carlton service on board and pinch-me moments on shore.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection essentially implores you to explore each destination exactly as you wish, offering three customized ways to take it all in. Select Group Excursions focus on the well-known landmarks and hidden treasures unique to each site. Experts guide a small group and share fascinating stories about the location’s people, history, and culture. Pre-Designed Private Excursions cater to the interests and preferences of guests traveling together, allowing your personal group to journey at your own pace, an option that is both flexible and intimate. Custom Private Excursions are only limited by your imagination, with itineraries tailored entirely to your whims and wishes.

Featuring unique and distinguished destinations across the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Asia, Caribbean, and Central America, every voyage is filled with awe.

Evrima ’s roundtrip Barcelona itinerary, for one, takes you to exquisite French landscapes, including Collioure, Sanarysur-Mer, and Saint-Tropez. Kayak the canals of Sète, take in the soaring white cliffs of Calanques National Park from a catamaran, and sip local gin in a seaside café on the Menorcan coast. Often thought of as the most laidback of the Balearic Islands, the pace in Menorca is delightfully slow. Be sure to peek inside the opulent Cathedral Santa Maria, where you might just catch a recital on the massive gold-trimmed organ, designed with more than 3,000 pipes.

And aboard Ilma’ s Amsterdam to Lisbon trip, you’ll have ample time to explore Antwerp’s famous museums and its renowned diamond district. A visit to the heart of wine country includes more than tastings: In Bordeaux, you’ll learn how the grapes are grown, aged, and processed, and even take part in the harvest. The waterfront maze of cobblestone streets and picturesque squares in Porto’s historic Ribeira quarter are best explored on foot, while Lisbon’s ornate Manueline architecture is a sight to behold. – amy roberts

Embark on a winter adventure through Yellowstone National Park with National Geographic

Expeditions

TRAVELING with a field expert is the quintessential way to see the world’s wonders. With National Geographic Expeditions, you're fully immersed in the wilderness so you can observe diverse species in their natural habitats, gaining rare insights along the way. Each trip is accompanied by a National Geographic Expert and an expedition leader who guide guests through awesome adventures, from witnessing Tanzania’s Great Migration to snorkeling and kayaking the seas of Palau.

When it comes to cold-weather journeys, "Winter Wildlife in Yellowstone" is a never-forget National Park experience. The dramatic landscapes, geothermal activity, and abundant wildlife have captivated travelers for decades, and witnessing it all during the quiet winter season is magical. Bonus: You don’t have to plan a single bit of it.

On this curated adventure, heated snow coaches will whisk you to the remote reaches of the 2.2-million-acre park, where frozen waterfalls and blankets of snow transform the landscape into an otherworldly view. Take in the majestic Old Faithful geyser in its full display (with zero crowds) and travel into the Upper Geyser Basin, bubbling with mud pots, fumaroles, and gem-colored mineral pools. Hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are optional, while star gazing from some of the world’s best constellation-viewing spots is highly recommended. A dedicated photography departure makes it all the more special.

Yellowstone’s wildlife is, of course, a highlight of the “show.” You’ll learn about the 1995 reintroduction of wolves to the park, then safari through the sweeping Lamar Valley in search of the elusive creatures. Also be on the lookout for elk, bighorn sheep, antelope, bald eagles, and herds of bison along the way. On some expeditions, a wildlife cinematographer will join travelers, sharing tales from his career as a filmmaker for National Geographic.

Accommodations include three different high-end resorts and lodges within the park, where natural wonders are just steps away. With a light to moderate activity level, this expedition is ideal for most travelers—whether you’re an intrepid adventurer or prefer a more leisurely pace. And with every step, National Geographic’s experts are there, sharing their unique perspectives for an adventure unlike any other. – avery bredesen

MARVEL MORE

Oh, the amazing places you can go with Micato

Safaris.

FOR 60 years, Micato Safaris has been creating one jaw-dropping adventure after another. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to dream up an experience that Micato doesn’t already offer, but if you do, you’ll be met with an enthusiastic commitment to customize it for you. After all, a Micato safari is more than a safari. It’s a layered experience rich in cultural and educational opportunities such as visiting local schools, volunteering at a community center, meeting with wildlife conservationists, and enjoying guest-of-honor status at a tribal celebration. It wasn’t easy to narrow down, but we’re sharing a few of our favorite Micato adventures.

WALK WITH WARRIORS

Trek through the Chyulu Hills, a 100-mile-long range of forested and river-fed plains that stretch skywards some 7,000 feet. Here, at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the land is lush and rich with wildlife. Walk the rolling hills with Maasai tribal people and learn why this famed mountain is so central to their way of life.

PADDLE TO THE PENGUINS

Penguins aren’t the first animal you’d expect to spot in Africa, but the endangered Cape Penguin is a wonderful bonus in your journey. Kayak through the waters of False Bay to a burgeoning colony, where these flightless birds live in harmony with whitebreasted cormorants. At Boulders Beach, you may even have the opportunity to watch them fish as you swim near their hunting grounds.

FEEL THE RUSH OF VICTORIA FALLS

You can witness the largest waterfall in the world by foot, but seeing Victoria Falls from the bird’s-eye view of a helicopter is an adrenaline rush like you’ve never known. You’ll hover just above its cascade, getting so close that you might just feel the spray.

LEARN FROM AN ANTI-POACHING

PATROL

The Loisaba Conservancy stretches over 58,000 acres in Northern Kenya, and is a migration corridor for elephants, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and more. It’s here where the conservancy’s dedicated anti-poaching team works day in and day out to keep endangered wildlife safe. Meet the team and their sniffer bloodhounds, learning about their fascinating training and mission.

SAFARI BY SKY

Floating over the serene Maasai Mara or Serengeti in a hot-air balloon is a next-level experience. You’ll likely see wildebeests migrate, and be amused by a tower of giraffes as they cast a curious glance upward. – amy roberts

RIVER CRUISING Across Three Continents

AmaWaterways provides a bevy of magnificent ways to experience exotic and enchanting destinations.

“PINCH me, Rosie. Here we are going down the river like Antony and Cleopatra on their barge.” You don’t have to be Humphrey Bogart or Katharine Hepburn to take in the beauty of Africa by riverboat today, and the luxurious, eco-conscious river vessels on some of the world’s most exotic waterways are a far cry from the African Queen.

Such far-flung river cruises aren’t just bubbling up in Africa. You can also adventure down the 3,000-mile Mekong River through Cambodia and Vietnam, cruise the Magdalena—the “River of Life,” as it was called by Nobel Prize-winning Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Márquez—or see one of the world’s seven ancient wonders by boat along the Nile. A longtime leader in river cruising, AmaWaterways offers unparalleled experiences on the rivers of Europe, Asia, Africa, and for the first time, South America.

CRUISE COLOMBIA ON THE RIO MAGDALENA

Exceptional biodiversity sets Colombia apart, and its largest river, the Magdalena, flows from headwaters in the Andes, a thousand miles northwards to Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Along its banks, travelers are discovering colorful culture and cuisine, outdoor adventure (from sport fishing to mountain climbing), and unrivaled birdwatching in the country with the greatest diversity of bird species anywhere. Discover it all from the luxury of two new vessels, including the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena , which will embark on its first sailing in January 2025.

ADVENTURE IN CAMBODIA & VIETNAM ON THE MEKONG

Cruising along the Mekong River, the culture-curious will delight in floating past districts of historic wooden houses on stilts, visiting bustling artisan markets, and taking contemplative strolls through pagodas and Buddhist monasteries. Nature buffs will have a chance to encounter “lifer” species including the rare Irrawaddy dolphin, the Siamese crocodile, and iconic birds like the Sarus Crane and Giant Ibis. AmaWaterways offers more than a dozen different Southeastern Asia itineraries along the Mekong, with unrivaled access to Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, Cambodia’s Phnom Penh, and all the ancient ruins, rustic rural villages, and colorful little cities in between.

FLOAT INTO THE HEART OF AFRICA ON THE CHOBE

Some 50 miles from Victoria Falls, the Chobe cuts through the northern part of Botswana’s Chobe National Park. Year round, this region is home to prides of lions, families of monkeys and baboons, herds of kudu, sable, and buffalo, and some 500 species of birds. And in the dry season of April to October, giraffes, rhinoceros, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, and jackals travel from the interior to visit the river’s banks. From the eco-conscious Zambezi Queen , guests hop smaller expedition boats right to the banks to safely get eye to eye with majestic elephants—the continent’s largest concentration of these gentle giants also bathe and play in the Chobe.

EXPERIENCE EGYPT ON THE NILE

“Can you see anything?”

“Yes, wonderful things!” shouted British archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter upon first peering into King Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings when it was rediscovered in 1922. Ancient Egypt’s marvels—from the grand Temple of Luxor to the 3,000-year-old UNESCO-protected Ramses II shrine Abu Simbel to the Great Pyramids of Giza— inspire the same wonder in every modern-day discoverer. For appreciators of Egyptian culture, design, and history, AmaWaterways has launched an unparalleled Nile river cruise that leaves no stone unturned. – alexandra marvar

ADVENTURE like a pro

A PONANT Photo Ambassador shares her pinch-me moments, photography tips, and the elusive animal she’s still waiting to see.

CINDY Miller Hopkins might just have the best job in the world. As a Photo Ambassador for PONANT, she spends more than 100 days a year at sea, traveling nearly pole to pole from the high Arctic to Antarctica. Onboard, the guests are her top priority as she assists with their cameras, hosts lectures, and teaches classes (mastering your cell phone camera is her most popular class). Hopkins likes to say that her favorite place in the world is “wherever I am today.” On this day, Ultimate Experiences caught up with her in remote southeast Greenland onboard Le Commandant Charcot . They had just spotted their first polar bear of the trip, and later stopped in a frozen bay where villagers from the local community invited guests to glide with them over the ice by dog sled.

FOR 2025, WHAT PONANT VOYAGE ARE YOU ESPECIALLY EXCITED ABOUT?

My top picks are the North Pole and Emperor penguin trips. It’s amazing to me that there are still places on this planet where you can go for days and not see another soul. Some of my favorite polar bear sightings have been on trips to the North Pole. In Antarctica and the Weddell Sea, I’ve been lucky to see thousands of Emperor penguins, but interacting with Emperor chicks is really something special. PONANT is the only company that visits the Emperor penguin colony without the use of a helicopter— better for the planet and for the penguins.

AS A PHOTO AMBASSADOR, WHAT’S THE #1 TIP YOU SHARE WITH TRAVELERS?

Bring a camera that you’re comfortable with. If you are going to buy a new one, take the time to get it into your hands at least a month before your departure and play with it—I suggest you practice at your local zoo! Also, bring a drybag, and put the camera down occasionally to really enjoy what you are seeing with your eyes and feeling in your soul.

WHAT CAMERA DO YOU USE, AND WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO GUESTS?

I’ve been using Nikon cameras for more than 25 years. In my bag right now I’m carrying two Nikon Z8 bodies, a Nikon D850, and four lenses. I also use my iPhone for video. For guests, if you only have one camera and want to carry one lens, I recommend something like a 18-300mm zoom. For the Arctic, bears can be a bit far away so the 300mm will come in handy, but you’ll want something wider for the stunning landscapes. For Antarctica, the penguins can be quite close, but you’ll still want a longer lens for things like whales.

TELL US ABOUT ONE OF THE MOST MOVING THINGS YOU’VE WITNESSED IN THE WILD.

I once watched an orca teach its calf to hunt by gently catching a seal over and over again, allowing the young orca to watch and even practice. Everyone was dreading the eventual moment when the orca would kill the seal, but to our amazement it let the seal go before swimming away peacefully. I do fear that the poor seal needed some therapy after that!

IS THERE AN ANIMAL THAT’S STILL ON YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY WISH LIST?

Narwhal! I’ve been going to the Arctic for decades and have yet to see one of these rare and elusive creatures. – sarah taylor asquith

DESTINATION PACIFIC ISLANDS

Seabourn takes travelers on an island odyssey where rich history meets tropical paradise.

HAVE you ever heard someone speak Vano? Probably not, as fewer than five people left on Earth know this dying Melanesian language native to Vanikoro, in the Solomon Islands. Also rare, a species of flying fox that lives among the wildlife and avian biodiversity on this seldom-visited, reef-ringed volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean.

The South Pacific is home to some of the least-traveled islands and atolls in the world, Vanikoro among them. Reaching these places— much less finding them on a map—is no easy feat. But increasingly, travelers are taking an interest, including World War II enthusiasts whose curiosity cannot be sated by books or the History Channel. Such waterborne experiences in secluded, tropical harbors of the South Pacific—to destinations like Misool and its Yapap Lagoon in Indonesia’s Raja Ampat—allow you to snorkel and scuba dive among not only pristine coral reefs and a kaleidoscope of marine life (sea turtles to reef sharks, manta rays to iridescent rainbow Flasher Wrasse fish) but alongside the sunken ruins of Japanese and American mid-century aircraft and warships.

In 2025, Seabourn will introduce several first-of-a-kind journeys taking guests to this under-explored region’s picture-perfect tropical beaches on ultra-luxury cruises. Expect spectacular volcanic landscapes, world-class diving and snorkeling, and performances by fire dancers in outsized, ornate masks.

As for the experiences: The snorkeling and scuba diving is of course a dream. Zodiac cruises offer up-close views of the region’s captivating limestone karst formations. Hiking trips in West Papua’s Arfak Mountains provide a chance to spot wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. Islands once known for fierce head-hunters have now become world-renowned for their artisan woodworkers— and offer a last chance to hear languages on the brink of extinction. And if expedition cruising is more your speed, Seabourn’s Safari at Sea offers two new Polar Class 6 ships featuring expedition teams, Zodiacs, kayaks, and six-person submarines that allow you to encounter rare creatures in the wild. – alexandra marvar

around the world

in 180 days

Go globetrotting with Oceania Cruises on a grand voyage of a lifetime.

WHAT can you see in 180 days? How about six continents, 43 countries, 101 ports, and 18 seas, for starters. Oceania Cruises recently announced its Around the World voyage, and it will be, in a word, epic. Setting sail in January 2026, the journey will be the first of its kind aboard Vista , Oceania Cruises’ newest ship that was introduced last year.

THE VOYAGE

This six-month journey weaves together UNESCO World Heritage sites, iconic cities, and exceptional experiences in dazzling ports of call.

After leaving Miami, guests will sail toward South America for a six-week exploration of the continent. The famed beaches of Rio de Janeiro might seem impossible to beat, until you arrive in French Polynesia by way of Chile, Peru, and Hawaii. Some of the Pacific’s most biodiverse forests beckon in New Caledonia, where renowned museums and galleries illuminate the island’s culture and history. The spectacular marine life that calls the Great Barrier Reef home awaits your arrival, as does the harmonious allure of Bali. Spices like yellow curry, Ceylon cinnamon, and dry chutney make great souvenirs and can be found in markets across Cochin, India, while the glitz and glamour of Dubai are keepsakes of their own. After exploring the awesome power and wealth of Egyptian pharaohs, get ready to snorkel (and float) in the buoyant Red Sea. Then head north to Grenada, where sampling the local rum is a must, as is sipping Bordeaux in Bordeaux.

THE VESSEL

If you’re going to spend six months at sea, modern comforts and superior amenities are a requisite. Christened in 2023, Vista is Oceania Cruises’ newest and arguably grandest ship— its captivating beauty and stylish design set the tone for the wonders that await. Expect residential-style luxury with veranda accommodations in each suite and stateroom, stunningly appointed bathrooms with oversized showers, ample vanities and storage space, and sumptuous furnishings.

The cuisine, entertainment, and wellness programs are also impressive. There are 11 dining spaces, ranging from a classic steakhouse (Polo Grill) to authentic Italian (Toscana) and PanAsian (Red Ginger). Vista ’s signature restaurant, Ember, serves inventive American creations and time-honored classics, while the wellness-inspired Aquamar Kitchen offers fresh, wholesome meals worthy of Oceania Cruises’ reputation for culinary and destination-focused exploration. Indulge in experiential beverages at The Bubbly Bar, or choose your own edible embellishments at The Ultimate Bloody Mary Bar.

On the pool deck, plush lounge chairs and shaded cabanas are plentiful, while the Aquamar Spa is the place for true tranquility. The terrace’s plunge pools and a custom massage are the perfect cap on a day filled with pickleball, lawn games, and onboard cooking classes. And in the Vitality holistic wellness center, expect an array of fitness classes and state-of-the-art gym equipment.

THE Polynesian Triangle, a vast expanse of the Pacific speckled with verdant volcanic islands and coral atolls, was the very last swath of the globe to be settled by human life. And still today, this remote region holds much yet to be discovered. What untold beauty and intrigue do these scenic archipelagos have in store?

French Polynesia—a French overseas country of 121 different islands across 1,200 square miles of ocean—is worldrenowned for its year-round idyllic weather, sun-soaked beaches, and turquoise seas. Some two-thirds of these islands are inhabited, Tahiti and Bora Bora among them.

Yes, these are world-class snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, and windsurfing destinations, and some of the world’s most optimal habitats for sea turtles and cetaceans (humpback whales grace the waters between July and November). But there’s more to French Polynesia than the shoreline. Inland, expect lush forests, volcanic mountains, and cascading waterfalls, and across these islands is rich history and culture worth traveling for. Silversea is giving guests a new level of access to exceptional water adventures, but also thoughtfully curated nature excursions, wellness experiences, and architectural and culinary activities guided by local experts to reveal a richer side of French Polynesia.

At the heart of the Polynesian Triangle, in the Society Islands archipelago, is the island of Ra'iātea, known historically as the region’s “sacred island.”

A journey here is a journey back in time, as ancient traditions—and ancient architecture—blend seamlessly with modernity. It was from Ra'iātea that the region’s first voyagers embarked on expeditions to the rest of the far Pacific.

This legacy is still visible today: The cradle of Polynesian culture and politics is dotted with historic sites of note, including UNESCO-protected Taputapuātea, a forested valley and lagoon filled with marae, which are traditional temples where the living world intersected with the worlds of ancestors and gods. This ancient legacy is also evident in the way of life, as age-old Polynesian themes like mana—an ancestral and spiritual force—infuse every aspect, from food to music to craftsmanship.

Unlike some of its neighbors, Ra'iātea is unspoiled by mass tourism. Travelers come in search of cultural experiences that are authentic and intimate, as they do in the lesser-known Society Islands, like Huahine (home of the country’s largest number of pre-European marae) and Moorea.

Known for its postcard-perfect scenery—glowing cyan waters and white-sand beaches against dramatic, jagged mountains— Moorea is also a destination for those who want to learn from the local chefs cooking with native ingredients and using traditional culinary techniques.

Beyond the Society Islands, there are yet other archipelagos to discover: The beauty of the Marquesas Islands, for example, has served as an inspiration for many artists.

Silversea’s distinctive opportunities—like its new Pacific voyages exploring the Society, Tuamotu, and Marquesas regions—are bringing outsiders into this world of vibrant culture and millennia of human history. As travelers seek experiences that balance relaxation and exploration, Silversea highlights the region’s 3,000-year-old cultural heritage through bespoke excursions (see sidebar) that allow guests to connect with local communities, sample traditional cuisine, and experience ancient customs and rituals firsthand. Longer itineraries offer opportunities for a luxuriantly slower pace of travel, with time to delve into each island’s treasures and form connections with people and culture. – alexandra marvar

Atria Terrace at One&Only Kéa Island.

GREEK PARADOX

Immerse yourself in the ancient stories of Kéa Island and Athens from two new and beautifully modern One&Only resorts.

AS I APPROACH THE LION OF KÉA,

one of Greece’s oldest sculptures, I’m told to look out for passersby. Expecting to greet fellow travelers on the remote road, I actually only encounter one local farmer and three cows. While I ascend the small climb with Sotiria, a cultural ambassador to the just-opened One&Only Kéa Island resort, she tells me that the lion is considered a mythical protector of ancient Greece. As the folklore dating back to 600 BC goes, the gods sent the lion to the Kéa village of Ioulida to denounce the powerful sea nymphs—their beauty so mesmerizing, they dried up the land and made the gods jealous.

After reaching the 26-foot-long statue, I admire an orange sunset fading over the Aegean Sea and sear the perfect moment to memory: the cliff’s white-washed homes, the chime of a local church bell, and the lion’s enigmatic grin carved into the slate bedrock. It feels as if he’s swallowed a secret—and I’ll learn his archaic smile is celebrated as a hallmark of sixth-century Greek sculpture. Over the next few days, I’ll become privy to additional secrets of Kéa, making this lesser-known island all the more intriguing. While other Cycladic islands like Mykonos and Santorini are famously magical, Kéa, the closest to Athens, lives like a step back in time, a secret wealthy Athenians have been keeping for decades—their second homes nestled into the island’s cerulean coves and hillsides. During unforgettable stays at One&Only Kéa Island and One&Only Aesthesis in Athens, I’ll experience the idyllic blend of chora (country) and polis (city), and quickly discover that Greece is a country that surpasses its seductive reputation.

ONE&ONLY KÉA ISLAND

The anticipated opening of One&Only Kéa Island has discerning nomads clamoring for first dibs (it officially debuted June of this year). Expect to arrive via a 45-minute trip on a high-speed RIB boat (there’s also a helipad) from the port of Lavrio, only 22 miles from Athens International Airport. As Captain Dimitrius pumps Eighties music (by request) and points out various landmarks (hello, Temple of Poseidon), we approach the resort’s shore, a horseshoe stretch of sand named Bond Beach Club—a play on connection, not James—and the property comes into sharp focus. Concepted by renowned architect John Heah, the 63 modern one- and two-bedroom villas are tucked into the cliffside, designed to complement nature’s bounty. After we dock and check in, my personal host miraculously arrives in my WhatsApp feed. A signature of One&Only, this host at once becomes my conduit to resort life with golf cart rides along steep switchbacks to and from the open-air lobby, secluded beach, decadent spa, and hilltop infinity pools. Every nook and cranny of the property frames the environment—strategically placed windows, doorways, and architectural curves bring the outdoors in. Here, the Aegean Sea is your daily inspiration, an ebb and flow of local culture and the muse to Kéa’s hidden treasures.

TO-DO LIST: Villas feature natural light, private infinity pools, outdoor terraces, and spacious living rooms. As such, admiring the astounding view from your enviable headquarters is time well spent. When you’re ready to explore the resort grounds, indulge in indelible meals at Atria, which serves the finest Greek cuisine on the island. Pier-to-plate delights are paired with local Greek wines by knowledgeable sommeliers, while the chic Kosmos Lobby Bar serves artisan cocktails fueled by Greek favorites like ouzo and mastiha . Post-dinner, cap the eve at the aptly named Incognito Speakeasy Bar, a tucked-away Cuban-inspired space with top-shelf whiskey and festive live music and dancing. Mornings are refreshing, take-your-time affairs. The Kaiki Pool Bar attracts a mix of traveling Europeans, visiting Athenians, and fortunate Americans beginning the day with authentic Greek dishes such as strapatsada (scrambled eggs with tomato, feta, and olive oil). Oenophiles should spend ample time at Èpicora, a sophisticated wine bar where Greek varieties are paired with local charcuterie and artisanal cheeses (it’s also the staging area for pop-ups with visiting celebrity chefs). Your top mission, however: Uncovering the Secrets of Kéa. Led by longtime Kéa locals and transplants, these in-the-know immersions into island culture cater to adventurous scuba divers, history buffs, and the design obsessed—or all the above. If traveling with the littles, the nautical-themed KidsOnly Club celebrates Kéa’s famous shipwreck sites and offers playful active pursuits.

HERE, THE AEGEAN SEA IS YOUR DAILY INSPIRATION, AN EBB AND FLOW OF LOCAL CULTURE AND THE MUSE TO KÉA’S HIDDEN TREASURES.
Opposite: Late sun warms the One&Only Kéa Island's Kosmos terrace. Clockwise from top: Bond Beach Club, One&Only Kéa Island; boat arrival to Kéa Island; the resort's one-bedroom Cliff Villa; nightcaps at Incognito Speakeasy Bar.

SPA & WELLNESS: As the largest spa in the One&Only family, the multi-level Kéa Island expanse is an enticing architectural focus. Laze away the morning at one of the most picturesque pools in all of Greece, followed by your choice of natural treatments (pomegranate enzymes, tulsi, wild turmeric, and more) inspired by the ancient Greek concept of sophrosyne , or mind-body balance. And when you’re ready to work off Kéa’s incredible cuisine, Club One has every fitness bell and whistle, much of it al fresco with daily yoga sessions overlooking Bond Beach Club and cycling classes with unforgettable island vistas. The gym features top-of-the-line studio equipment and customized personal training programs.

THE SECRETS OF KÉA

As an avid scuba diver, I may never have the skills to descend to the depths of the World War I Britannic shipwreck. Still, an afternoon spent conversing with expedition diver Yannis Tzavelakos beneath the shade of a large Valonia Oak tree at One&Only Kéa Island’s Bond Beach Club is one I won’t forget. Tzavelakos has braved the 400-foot dive to the Britannic several times and is currently working with famous American divers on a potential documentary showcasing the “Everest of scuba diving,” he says. Adventurous guests of One&Only Kéa Island can partake in The Deep Blue experience, venturing to other shipwrecks with Tzavelakos (advanced certification may be required), while his team also leads shallower dives to other top sites. Learn about the brilliant marine parks that lie beneath Kéa’s sapphire waters, located on the maritime passage of the Black Sea and a former battlefield during World War I and World War II. If it’s above-water adventures that stoke your inner explorer, these Secrets of Kéa will leave you just as impressed.

AEGEAN ART & CULTURE. Discover the island’s captivating cultural scene with curator Sotiria Antonopoulou of Keos Culture. Traverse the colorful streets of Ioulida, peppered with mom-andpop boutiques, old churches, and tavernas . The resort has plans to soon showcase artists in residency, celebrating regional talent with on-property exhibitions.

NATURE’S BOUNTY. Learn about the unique culinary riches of Kéa with third-generation beekeeper George Thodos and his French wife, Geraldine, who produce wild thyme honey on their charming property and working farm.

BENEATH THE SURFACE. One&Only Kéa Island’s resident archaeologist Petroula Tatsopoulou will reveal layers of history and mystery during this once-in-a-lifetime experience showcasing the distinct heritage of the island.

FORGED IN GOLD. Drawing inspiration from Kéa’s natural and nautical treasures, artists Alexia and Stalo Karides of Ysso have created a covetable jewelry collection exclusively for One&Only Kéa Island, curated and hand-crafted in their Athens studio.

ONE&ONLY AESTHESIS & THE ATHENIAN RIVIERA

There’s nowhere better to explore the pulse of Athens than from the One&Only Aesthesis, which marks the brand’s Greece debut. Celebrating its official grand opening this summer with a lineup of bold-faced names, the resort is positioned to usher in a new golden era of the glamorous Athenian Riviera. Hugging a glorious stretch of sand, this of-the-moment escape lures a see-and-be-seen crowd with topnotch restaurants and a favored location: a five-minute walk to Glyfada and a 30-minute drive to the heart of Athens and the Acropolis.

RIVIERA REVIVAL. One&Only Aesthesis was formerly the iconic Asteria beach club, made famous in the Sixties and Seventies as a posh enclave for filmmakers, movie stars, and musicians. Not one, but three architecture firms—AUDO, A6Architects, and K-Studio—along with interior design studio Muza Lab, were commissioned to reimagine the storied site. Greek and French influences abound, anchored by the highly visual poolside, while history and glam are intertwined throughout the property’s aesthetic. The new iteration takes full advantage of the sprawling grounds, which houses just over a dozen guest rooms in the main building, one- and-two-bedroom villas, plus private residences. Culinary standouts include restaurants of master chefs Ettore Botrini and Paco Morales (try them both), who create Italian, Greek, and Moorish artistry, as well as Manko Athens, an indooroutdoor space where day dining easily mingles into night. Also not to miss: Greece’s first Guerlain Spa—a Parisian-inspired respite from city life steeped in the art of wellness, skincare, and customized treatments. Of course the fitness center is also magnificent, while a tennis game at Club One is an experience you’ll never forget.

Opposite: Entering the One&Only Aesthesis. Clockwise from top: Ora by Ettore Botrini at One&Only Aesthesis; Villa One's private pool at One&Only Aesthesis; the resort's Thimisi bar at sunset; cocktails feature local Greek spirits; the property's Aesthesis Bungalow.

ATHENA & THE ACROPOLIS. In Athens, cultural pursuits are everywhere. The city is, after all, the birthplace of well-known philosophers, artists, authors, and Olympians. As such, it’s basically mandatory for Athens first-timers to visit the Acropolis. Remarkable Greek mythology, monumental architectural feats, and some of the oldest ruins on earth await. The One&Only Aesthesis introduces guests to top private guides, and I spent an early evening (tip: avoid peak hours to bypass heat and crowds) with Stelios, an Oxford PHD and Athens native who revealed an encyclopedic knowledge of Greek architecture, geology, and history. As we navigated the city’s mesmerizing ruins, including the Parthenon, Acropolis, and the first Olympic stadium, I learned more in a few hours than I ever could in Greek history books before the trip. I spent my last evening watching the sun sink around the Acropolis, my imagination alive—much like Athens itself—with visions of gods and goddesses, tragedy and triumph, and a melting pot of global influence that has, for eons, been welcomed in this paradisical part of the world.

The Magashi tented suites overlook Rwanda's Lake Rwanyakazinga.

the reawakening of RWANDA

With rich culture, luxurious resorts, and highly sustainable practices via African Travel, the country is emerging as a premier destination.

RWANDA’S iconic mountain gorillas have long been its star attraction. But years of smart, sustainable tourism development means that the country’s great apes are now sharing the spotlight with other dream experiences. Widely regarded as one of the continent’s safest and most inclusive countries, the Land of a Thousand Hills is luring visitors with everything from Big Five viewing to a budding contemporary art scene and award-winning restaurants in its dynamic capital city. Read on to discover why Rwanda is becoming Africa’s new darling, and how African Travel is curating unforgettable stays, sights, and experiences.

SUMPTUOUS ACCOMMODATIONS: Rwanda’s lodges and resorts easily rival the most over-the-top safari stays in Botswana and Kenya. The visionary safari operator named Wilderness runs the Bisate and Magashi lodges. Near Volcanoes National Park, Bisate is a sustainable resort with just six villas, each one tucked into the forest and designed to resemble the nests of weaver birds. The property also features a wine cellar, spa, and a restaurant that showcases ingredients from an onsite organic garden. Magashi, meanwhile, is a luxe collection of eight spacious tented suites along Lake Rwanyakazinga, in the northeastern section of Akagera National Park. And at the One&Only Nyungwe House within Nyungwe Forest, guests stay in treetop-skimming villas and can explore the property’s very own tea plantation or experience the healing properties of Indigenous ingredients like the African potato in the lavish spa.

BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES: A unique topography of volcanic mountain ranges and countless rolling hills has earned Rwanda the nickname of the Land of a Thousand Hills. And when exploring with African Travel, immersive experiences await, including fly-fishing and discovering Lake Rwanyakazinga on a boating safari, during which you may spy the elusive shoebill and diverse bird species.

DIVERSE WILDLIFE: You can now get the full safari experience in Rwanda. In 2010, African Parks assumed management of Akagera National Park in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board, restoring the biodiversity in this depleted wilderness area. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, followed by the rhino population in 2017, bringing the Big Five back for the first time in decades. In Nyungwe Forest National Park and Gishwati Forest, travelers can spot chimpanzees, olive baboons, and more than a half-dozen species of monkeys. Rwanda also has some of the best montane birding in Africa, boasting more than 700 species, including the rare Congo Bay Owl.

GORILLA TREKKING: Nothing inspires awe like a close encounter with a mountain gorilla, and Rwanda is one of the most accessible places to witness the creatures in their natural habitat. Upwards of 600 gorillas can be found in the Virunga Massif, a chain of eight volcanic mountains. Five of those mountains comprise the Volcanoes National Park, where 12 families of gorillas currently live. Only 96 permits are available per day—when venturing with African Travel, this is taken care of so you can focus on exploring with your private guide. Tracking experiences are always intimate and sometimes arduous: Treks through the misty rainforest last anywhere from 30 minutes to more than four hours—discovering a silverback munching on bamboo is well worth the effort.

A CULTURE-FILLED CAPITAL: The gateway to Rwanda’s stunning landscapes has transformed Kigali into a destination in its own right, known for its ethical design studios, artisanal coffee shops, and ecochic fashion boutiques. A trip to the poignant Kigali Genocide Memorial is essential to understanding the country’s complicated past and to truly appreciate Rwanda’s transformation. As for art and design, African Travel places a contemporary twist on traditions. When visiting a local neighborhood market, participate in imigongo art painting and taste the country's famous coffee. Uncover the legacy of Dian Fossey and learn about the ongoing efforts to protect gorillas and their habitats. Additionally, with African Travel you can join the Lion Tracking Conservation Project and actively participate in monitoring the local lion population, which is critical in preserving the park’s biodiversity. Track and identify individual lions using identikits and become a crucial guardian of these iconic species.

SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES: Considered one of the world’s greenest destinations, Rwanda is at the forefront of sustainable tourism and earth-friendly urban planning. In 2008, the country banned plastic bags and single-use plastics, which has earned Kigali a reputation as one of the planet’s cleanest urban areas. The government has also set a bold goal to be climate resilient and carbon neutral by 2050, plus 10 percent of revenue generated by the national parks goes to local communities.

Editor-at-large Ignacio Maza uncovers off-season thrills while exploring New Zealand’s most fascinating landscapes.

DUE SOUTH

Irecently explored Aotearoa (New Zealand’s Māori name) with one mission in mind: to discover the many places I missed during my last visit. I desired fresh vistas, new adventures, and special places to stay. Rather than visiting during the country’s popular summer season (North America’s winter), I decided to travel in April, when it’s quieter and fall colors are on full display.

The South Island, where I spent the majority of my time, is nature’s wonderland. Imagine an island roughly the size of Illinois, with fjords, sand dunes, vineyards, turquoise lakes, golden beaches, dry valleys, rainforests, and snow-capped peaks soaring 12,000 feet into the sky. Couple this natural diversity with a unique history, a rich Māori heritage, friendly residents, and endemic flora and fauna (think: flightless birds), and you’ll begin to appreciate what makes the South Island so special.

I’m sharing the memorable places, accommodations, and experiences well worth adding to your travel wish list. Wherever you go, expect genuine Kiwi hospitality, fine dining, and heartfelt service. My hope is that one of these places inspires you to visit the South Island. Nature at its best. Pure New Zealand.

NELSON & PIHOPA RETREAT

As the gateway to three national parks and also a hub for artists, fine dining, and exceptional wine, the easy-living Nelson is the country’s sunshine capital. The jewel in the crown: Abel Tasman National Park. This coastal nature reserve is New Zealand’s smallest national park and features sandy beaches, lush forests, clear ocean waters, and unique rock formations. I enjoyed an all-day sail, kayak, and hike adventure, which gives you an overview of this coveted corner of the South Island.

Stay at Pihopa Retreat, Nelson’s only five-star resort built on the grounds of a former bishop’s residence. Owners Sarah and Sam Mellor have transformed the historic property into a hideaway featuring six well-appointed suites and manicured gardens, plus a swimming pool, gym, and spa. Don’t miss breakfast in the former church—a surprising and savory treat!

Opposite: Milford Sound. From top: Wharariki Beach, the northernmost point of the South Island; Pihopa Retreat in Nelson.

FRANZ JOSEF & TE WAONUI

The South Island’s west coast is home to two of New Zealand’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders: The Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Named after the former Austrian emperor, the Franz Josef Glacier once stretched to the Tasman Sea. Today, the glacier is best seen from the air. I flew over the icefield in a helicopter, learning about crevasses and glacial flour from Jay, my expert pilot. Landing next to a turquoise alpine lake and seeing the ice up close left me literally breathless. My first choice of resorts in the town of Franz Josef is Te Waonui Forest Retreat, a comfortable, eco-designed property surrounded by preserved native rainforest. A must: Visit the nearby West Coast Wildlife Center and see elusive kiwi in captivity.

From left: The Franz Josef Glacier; the eco-designed Te Waonui Forest Retreat. Opposite: Minaret Station, which is set on a 50,000-acre working farm.

LAKE WANAKA & MINARET STATION

Can one lodge put a destination on the global map? It can when it’s Minaret Station, New Zealand’s premier mountain resort. Located high above Lake Wānaka and accessible only by helicopter, the lodge—the dream of the late Sir Tim Wallis, New Zealand’s preeminent helicopter pilot and estate founder—is set in a wide valley within a 50,000-acre working farm. Arriving at Minaret Station felt like a sequence in a James Bond film. First, a helicopter flight to a mountaintop for glorious views of Lake Wānaka. Then, you’re whisked away to a shepherd’s hut for a delicious lunch prepared on the spot, followed by a scenic hike or flight to the lodge. Minaret Station is comprised of just four large chalets with high country hospitality, splendid views, and the best heli-experiences you can dream of.

MILFORD SOUND & FIORDLAND LODGE

New Zealand’s top attraction is Milford Sound, a spectacular waterway of towering peaks, indigo waters, and countless waterfalls. To fully appreciate Milford and uncover the magic of nature at its most magnificent, drive from Te Anau and stop at Mirror Lakes, Knobs Flat, and the rivers found along the way. A cruise through the sound is the quintessential New Zealand experience and sure to impress, regardless of the weather. Stay at Fiordland Lodge, a perfectly positioned regional gateway on a rise overlooking Lake Te Anau and the mountains beyond. The lodge, made of massive wooden pillars, is family managed with oversized guest rooms in the main building and two log cabins. Accommodations feature fireplaces, terraces, and unforgettable sunset views.

AHURIRI VALLEY & THE LINDIS

The Ahuriri Valley is a world-class hotspot for trout fishing. It’s also a beautiful, rugged landscape. This remote glacial valley of tussock grass, flanked by two mountain ranges, has vast sheep stations and a conservation park. Blending seamlessly into this landscape is The Lindis. Opened in 2018, the lodge is impressive because of its unique, ultramodern architecture that follows the natural undulations of the valley. The wood panel, bluestone, and sweeping glass design pays homage to its surrounding environment. Unwind in a large suite in the main lodge, or in a mirrored, free-standing pod. In addition to fishing, guests enjoy mountain biking, horse trekking, picnics, special heli adventures, and beautiful hikes on property. Don’t miss the night skies—mother nature’s greatest show on earth!

From top: An aerial view of Fiordland Lodge; The Lindis and its sweeping glass architecture. Opposite: Blanket Bay, overlooking Lake Wakatipu.

GLENORCHY & BLANKET BAY

Time stands still at Blanket Bay. This classic luxury lodge of schist rock and reclaimed hardwood on the shores of Lake Wakatipu is a short drive from the town of Glenorchy. Celebrating 25 years since opening, Blanket Bay is a member of Relais & Chateaux. Guests enjoy cozy fireplaces, dramatic mountain views, gourmet dining, and spa services. The vision of owner Tom Tusher, the former president of Levi Strauss, the resort is an alpine style, 19th-century lodge with 21st century amenities. Unwind in an oversized guestroom in the main lodge, a free-standing chalet, or the four-bedroom villa high above the estate. During your visit, you’ll experience many adventures, from heli-sightseeing and fly fishing to the ultimate thrill: jet boating on the Dart River at up to 60 miles per hour.

QUEENSTOWN & AZUR LODGE

This undisputed adventure capital offers stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and surrounding mountains, plus endless outdoor pursuits. The city that invented bungee jumping and perfected jet boats provides every active experience imaginable, from hiking, biking, rafting, and winter sports, to wilder activities like paragliding, skydiving, and canyoning. At night, Queenstown buzzes with fine dining, nightclubs, and events throughout the year. Stay at Azur Lodge, nine private villas offering seclusion and dreamy views of the lake and The Remarkables mountain range. This hilltop Shangri-La, a haven of tranquility, is just a five-minute drive to central Queenstown. Relax in the spacious, comfortable, open-plan layout with terraces. Don’t miss: Soaking in a villa bathtub set next to a large bay window with unobstructed vistas.

AUCKLAND & PARK HYATT

On your way to and from the South Island, spend a few days in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. Discover Māori masterpieces at Auckland Museum, take a ferry to Waiheke Island vineyards, explore the city’s Volcanic Field, visit the black-sand beaches of Karekare and Piha, and wander around the trendy Ponsonby neighborhood. Stay at Park Hyatt Auckland, which overlooks Waitemata yacht harbor and offers sea and city views from most guest rooms. Considered the finest hotel in the city, it has ample guest rooms and suites. You’ll have access extensive facilities, including a full-service spa, a 75-foot infinity swimming pool and wet area, indigenous artwork, and four dining spaces, including Onemata, my favorite restaurant in town.

the idyllic CANARY ISLANDS

Discovering Spain’s storied Atlantic islands with Windstar Cruises on Star Pride .

AS I begin my short walk to the port in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the pier is buzzing with excited travelers hopping out of taxis, fishing out their credentials, and tagging their bags. And at the very end of the dock, unassumingly tucked behind a much larger ship, floats the 312-guest Star Pride motor yacht, my home for a week of Canary Islands exploration with Windstar Cruises. This storied Spanish archipelago, about 65 miles off the coast of Morocco, is best known for its blissful beaches, subtropical climate, natural beauty, and volcanic peaks—not to mention fabulous wine. As such, the Canaries attract more than 16 million people each year, and I am lucky enough to be one of them.

Opposite: Star Pride sailing the Canary Islands seas. Above: In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the vibrant homes create a painterly sight.

Stepping aboard Star Pride , I instantly sense the serenity that keeps Windstar’s young-at-heart guests returning time and again. Everyone is in a laid-back frame of mind, casually dressed, quietly settling in. Staff members are quick with a smile, some getting hugs from guests who recognize them from a previous sailing. It’s an easygoing yacht vibe, punctuated by proper service and unstuffy fun. And the ship’s small size (only 522 feet long) allows it to duck in and out of ports that larger vessels can’t manage. This particular sailing has the added distinction of being named the President’s Cruise, hosted by Windstar President Christopher Prelog (see sidebar).

The small volcanic island of Lanzarote is first on our itinerary, the most easterly of the Canary Islands and a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve. The geological oddities of Timanfaya National Park and the lava fields of Los Volcanes National Park make this island a natural showstopper. I feel a million miles from home—almost as if I was on the moon—wandering the volcanic landscape and taking a selfie inside an actual caldera. (No forced smiles, this is genuine delight.) Despite a hot desert climate, Lanzarote is also celebrated for its wine. The 300-year-old vines grow in small pits, dug to reach the rich soil below the volcanic ash, ringed by low, semi-circular stone walls that protect against the Saharan winds.

More nature awaits in the cloud forests of La Gomera, as Star Pride docks at the island’s capital, San Sebastián. We make our way off the ship to explore the town’s historic core and terraced hillsides. The scenery is mesmerizing in the lush mountains of Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where cliffside roads wind through volcanic rock formations and diverse forests, from endemic Laurel trees to Fir, Beech, and Tree Heather. With such high mountains and deep canyons, it’s clear why residents here employ a whistle language to help them communicate across long distances, a tradition that carries on today.

The variety of shore experiences in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Canaries’ biggest city and island, invites guests to discover exactly what drew us to this journey in the first place. We can hit the beaches, tour through the Orotava Valley, taste our way through wine cellars, or take a cable car up Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain. I decide to spend a morning shopping with Star Pride Chef Stefan Vasilev in Santa Cruz’s main food market, discovering how he supports the local economy wherever he can. He leads us through the market stalls, buying up whole trays of fish that will end up on tonight’s menus back on board, along with several wheels of incredible cheese.

Heading north of the Canary Islands, we make a stop at the Portuguese paradise of Madeira. This stylish island is awash in terraced gardens, 15thcentury landmarks, and quaint fishing villages. I wander the old quarter of Funchal, the island’s capital, sampling as much local food and wine as I can manage. Fortunately, Star Pride is anchored here overnight, which allows us plenty of time to take in the city’s renowned nightlife.

Back on board for one final sea day enroute to Lisbon, our final stop, we gather on the top deck for sunset cocktails before yet another amazing meal—this time it’s tapas at Spanish restaurant Cuadro 44. We trade stories about our day, the mellow live music edging us into the evening. No one is in a rush—and that’s just the way we like it.

GET TO KNOW WINDSTAR PRESIDENT

Chris Prelog

WHAT’S ON YOUR TO-DO LIST FOR THIS PRESIDENT’S CRUISE?

When I board a ship, my main objective is to connect with guests, officers, and crew in as many different ways as possible to get a real read of how things are going. I tell the team up front: I’m going to ask a lot of questions—not because I think you’re doing something wrong, but so I can catch up and gain a wider perspective on how the ship is running.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE ATMOSPHERE ON THE SHIP?

While we definitely have luxury elements—great food in multiple restaurants, very personalized and highly engaged service—what’s different about Windstar is that we foster a laid-back atmosphere that comes without pretension. I think guests really appreciate that sort of style. To me, the biggest luxury these days is time and space. Here, you have that. You can read a book, have a coffee, take a nap, or enjoy a conversation. You can use the ship the way you want to. That’s the new cruising luxury lifestyle.

WHAT ABOUT WINDSTAR MAKES YOU THE MOST PROUD?

The crew is second to none. There’s an element of connectivity between the guests and the crew—a sense of caring, belonging, and community building—that I don’t think quite exists anywhere else.

WHAT KEEPS YOUR JOB FEELING NEW AND DIFFERENT?

I’m always hungry for new information and I enjoy learning new things. And in my more than 25 years in the cruise industry, one of the things I learned very quickly is that each day is different. So that keeps things fresh by default!

NORTHERN EXPOSURE

Hiking the British Columbia wilderness.
Head to Canada, where transformative experiences balance wild nature with rich culture.

WHEN the foliage changes, travelers will go to great lengths to see it. But why stop at colorful scenery? On storm-battered, driftwood-strewn western beaches, learn the stories from time immemorial and secrets of the Haida people, protectors of the Great Bear Rainforest and carvers of totem poles. In North America’s dramatic, northernmost reaches, set out to spot the illusive and spiritually significant polar bear. Take in panoramic vistas of aspen groves, glaciers, and gold rush towns from the luxe comfort of a glass-domed train car, or capture sights of some of the sea’s most majestic creatures amidst icebergs from a boat deck. These are a few of the experiences putting Canada at the top of fall destination lists.

THE SINGULAR STORY OF HAIDA GWAII

“The mystical land where time stands still,” artist Christian White says of his home, Haida Gwaii. In this protected landscape where moss-draped cedar and Sitka spruce trees tower over carved poles and fallen longhouses, it isn’t just the scenery that sets this island chain—90 nautical miles from British Columbia’s northwest coast—apart. Here, residents are preserving “an ancestral way of being.”

For decades, modern maps labeled the 155-mile-long archipelago the Queen Charlotte Islands. But this has been the home of the Haida First Nations for thousands of years, and in 2010, it reverted back to its ancestral name of Haida Gwaii. Today, the Haida assert sovereignty over the islands—and in a globally unique political situation, they’ve entered into agreements with the Canadian and British Columbian governments to reinforce the Haida’s self-governance. These legal efforts have come alongside cultural ones, to revitalize the Haida language and traditions.

Fewer than 5,000 people live here, but every visitor who makes the passage to Haida Gwaii departs with the understanding that these ancestral ways of living should be respected and protected.

The islands are accessible by short-haul flight and ferry from Vancouver. Amenity-rich coastal lodges make the perfect home base while exploring local artists’ studios, tasting the creations of renowned Haida chefs, and taking in cultural sites including the Haida people’s landmark totem poles.

THE MYSTICAL POWER OF A POLAR BEAR IN THE WILD

The mascot of the Arctic, the polar bear is a symbol of courage and resilience. Since northern Canada’s earliest human settlements, this animal has inspired awe. In Indigenous cultures— the Arctic Inuit, Yup'ik, and Chukchi—it’s considered sacred, often imbued with supernatural traits, and woven throughout spiritual rites and folklore.

In Western cultures, polar bears are meaningful too, connected to wilderness and adventure. And from a scientific standpoint, their sheer size and strength is a marvel: Adults might weigh three quarters of a ton and tower more than 10 feet when standing on their hind legs—one of the planet’s largest land predators, adapted to thrive in some of the harshest conditions. For everything you know about polar bears, there’s something still to learn. (Did you know they have webbed feet?)

Autumn in Canada is prime time to witness these animals in the wild, when they migrate to the Hudson Bay area in search of prey—namely, seals—congregating along the coastline and waiting for sea ice to form. Places like Churchill, Manitoba on the Hudson Bay, and the Arctic regions of Nunavut offer unparalleled access to polar bear habitat.

Knowledgeable local guides and Indigenous tour operators understand the ins and outs of sustainable tourism, bear behavior, and conservation efforts—and their insights make these experiences all the richer. From luxury ecolodges in the tundra, guides take guests into the Arctic Circle, safariing on foot at your own pace. Back at the lodge, fireplaces light up cozy lounges, while aurora borealis lights up the sky.

THE PERFECT PLACE FOR WHALE WATCHING

The humpback, the orca, the gray whale, the beluga, and the blue whale (Earth’s largest animal) are just some of the whale species swimming along the coasts in Canada. A convalescence of factors make these waters a capital choice for cetaceans: a great diversity of healthy marine ecosystems and nutrient-rich waters full of plankton and fish. And more, a number of key whale migration routes intersect along the country’s 125,000-plus-mile shoreline, creating ample opportunity to see them at certain times of year.

Canada is rising to the occasion with myriad accessible viewing locations, suited to every kind of traveler. For those willing to get on the water, boat tours, kayak excursions, and Zodiac expeditions take viewers up close.

From Newfoundland and Labrador all the way across the continent to British Columbia’s Clayoquot Sound (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve), travelers are seeking out whale watching experiences. Colder waters, like those of Fogo Island or off Nunavut, offer the chance to count beluga whales amidst the icebergs, and even sea-kayak right alongside them.

THE LUXURY—AND LEGACY—OF TOURING THE CANADIAN ROCKIES BY TRAIN

Since 1885, the Canadian Pacific Railway has connected the east and west of Canada. People and goods—lumber and gold, livestock and textiles—relied on these iconic routes to open up new frontiers. The spectacular scenery of glaciers, moss-cloaked spruce rainforests, dramatic river canyons, and breathtaking mountain passes was just a side effect. But it wasn’t long before grand passenger trains emerged, in the early 20th century, offering travelers opulent accommodations and world-class dining experiences to go along with the awe-inspiring views.

Today, luxury trains still travel these same historic routes, adding new amenities like glass-domed viewing cars and plush sleeper cabins. The routes take guests between Vancouver and destinations like Jasper, Banff, Whistler, and Lake Louise through the spectacular Fraser Canyon and the Spiral Tunnels. These remarkable train journeys were innovated by the original designers of the Canadian Railway to help trains traverse steep mountain grades, updated since opening to fanfare in 1909.

Perhaps the most premium experience is aboard the Rocky Mountaineer, known for luxe, spacious, comfortable cars with panoramic windows and outdoor viewing platforms, as well as gourmet dining options and onboard hospitality. Opportunities to venture off the beaten path include hiking trails, horseback trips, and gondola rides.

TIP OF THE ICEBERG

On board a Viking voyage to Antarctica, one writer learns that penguins, whales, and glaciers are just the beginning of an extraordinary adventure.

THE FIRST TIME

I SAW A PENGUIN IN ANTARCTICA ,

I SQUEALED.

It was a purely impulsive reaction to the lone black speck hanging out on a colossal iceberg off the coast of Anvers Island. There would be more squealing to come. This is a place where hand-overmouth gasps and swift clutching of the arm next to you—stranger or not—are part of the experience. It’s impossible to contain yourself when surrounded by the awe and beauty of it all: the deep blue sea, the towering icebergs that gleam in the soft light, the comedic penguins, majestic humpback whales, and other wildlife you never thought you’d see in real life. And when those same emotions are roused by the ship that brought you here, you know you’ve hit the jackpot. A combination of highly considered amenities and impromptu surprises, the Viking Polaris is pure delight—on board and off.

WHAT YOU

SHOULD

KNOW THE SHIP

The Viking Polaris is Viking’s second expedition ship in the region, and it delivers on the level of luxury and entertainment that line loyalists have come to expect. All the adrenaline-pumping excitement you’ll encounter on land expeditions and Zodiac rides is balanced with onboard comfort and coziness—the plush amenities make the ship a standout on the water. With a guest capacity just shy of 400, the adults-only vessel is among the largest ships with access to Antarctica. The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) does not permit ships with more than 500 guests to make landings on the continent.

THE ROUTE

After taking a charter flight from Buenos Aires, our journey embarked from Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world. We stayed one night on board the ship there and then spent the next two days crossing the Drake Passage. At this point, the route is determined by the captain—and the weather. (Our captain said we changed course more than a half dozen times!) Daily briefings advise on the next day’s stops, and you can expect at least one excursion opportunity each day. Our trip focused primarily on the Antarctic Peninsula, with stops to see whales up close in Fournier Bay, walk amongst the penguins at Damoy Point, and drift past colossal icebergs in the Melchior Islands. The shifting itinerary kept things exciting, with every day revealing something new and unexpected. On this summer itinerary (October through March), no two voyages are the same so your experience is truly one of a kind.

THE ACCOMMODATIONS

You don’t travel this far to stare at a wall, so there are no interior-facing staterooms on the Viking Polaris. The ship is designed with six types of accommodations, including three different-sized suites. Every stateroom features a panoramic floor-to-ceiling window, with a retracting upper half so you can feel the fresh sea air and capture clear camera views at any moment. We stayed in a Deluxe Nordic Balcony stateroom, with ample space for two travelers and considerately cozy amenities like heated bathroom floors and drying closets for our wet gear. All guests are provided with loaner waterproof pants and boots for wet landings, and gifted a Helly Hansen waterproof jacket that’s lined with a removable puffer coat.

THE DINING

Most meals take place in the World Café, where the open-kitchen options are plentiful, from grilled meats to a raw seafood bar, a sushi station to a rolled-ice cream counter. There are three other restaurants: Manfredi’s Italian Dining, where trattoria-style fare includes popular pasta and steak dishes, Mamsen’s for Nordic staples like waffles, jams, and cheese, and the aptly titled The Restaurant, where the menu changes daily.

Opposite: Zodiac adventures are a favorite pastime. Clockwise from below left; The Viking Polaris’ stylish Nordic Junior Suite; the ship's Manfredi’s Italian restaurant; the Viking Polaris off the coast of Anvers Island.

WHY YOU SHOULD GO THE

SIGHTS

As the ship’s expedition leaders tell you, “The entertainment is outside your window.” My first penguin sighting was just the tip of the literal iceberg. Throughout the trip we saw hundreds of them, mostly Gentoos with the occasional Chinstrap. Many guests said that while they came for the penguins, it was the glistening glaciers and icebergs—some the size of skyscrapers—that captured their hearts. For me, it was the whales. Daily excursions on Zodiacs and 12-person Special Operations Boats (aka S.O.B.s) almost always led to an encounter with feeding humpbacks, who put on a show by waving their fins or spouting through their blowholes. Guests can also venture out in double kayaks, or, for an extra fee, descend the ocean depths in one of two 11-ton, yellow submersibles named, appropriately, George and Ringo.

THE PAMPERING

When relaxing in a spa so beautiful that you forget you’re on a ship, you know you’ve come to the right place. The Nordic Spa’s muted color palette is calming, the steam fireplace cozy, and the panoramic windows inviting. Luxurious spaces include a lap pool, dry sauna, steam room, and snow grotto—a cold room where it “snows” man-made flakes, a perfect stop post-sauna or steam. The real showpiece, though, is the badestamp—a hot tub in an elevated nook facing an open window, where you feel the cool Antarctic breeze as you soak. Spa treatments range from massages on unique sand-covered tables (more comfortable than you’d think!) to traditional Ayurvedic practices, while the fitness center includes cardio machines, weights, and classes.

THE COZY SPACES

The Viking Polaris is thoughtfully designed, with special little areas made for quiet time and solitude. A standout is The Hide, tucked away at the end of Deck 1. By day, it’s a wonderful place to watch the waves with a good book in hand. By night, it transforms into a speakeasy, where a lone bartender shakes up premium cocktails. Many spaces feature Norwegian paintings, sculpture, photography, and textiles, which you can learn all about with the in-app art audio tour. It was fascinating to hear stories about the intrepid explorers pictured in historical photos, and even the dogs who accompanied them.

THE ONBOARD FUN

With each day on the ship, I discovered new and amusing surprises. The copy of No Horizon Is So Far, a story of the historic journey by two women across Antarctica, was a great way to start my own adventure, while the library, replete with a well-stocked bar and comfortable seating, is curated by London bookshop Heywood Hill and the University of Cambridge’s Scott Polar Research Institute. There are also games, art classes, live music, evening dance parties, and a personal favorite: lunch-hour trivia contests. My team was the two-time champion!

Opposite: The Nordic Spa frames indelible sea views. From top: Traversing Andord Bay; a serene outdoor terrace makes the most of endless vistas.

THE IMPACT

The Viking Polaris’ expedition team includes scientists and visiting researchers from partner organizations who host lectures that are just as entertaining as they are informative. (FYI: penguins have knees!) Guests are also invited to assist with field work, such as helping launch weather balloons that measure air temperature, humidity, and pressure. The Viking Polaris and its sister ship, the Viking Octantis, are the only two vessels in the world designated as official weather balloon stations for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service. The work is fun—and impactful. After our return home, we learned that a Viking expedition team supported the discovery of a previously unknown colony of Chinstrap penguins. That means there will be even more things to gasp at on my next voyage.

Diana Flores, Los Cabos Brand Ambassador & World Flag Football Champion

ULTIMATE WELLNESS ROUTINE: I travel a lot so I enjoy exploring wherever I’m visiting by going out for a run to the closest park. When I’m in Los Cabos, I take the opportunity to go paddleboarding, sailing near the Arch, and if there’s time, a luxurious treatment at Spa Montage at Montage Los Cabos Resort.

LOS CABOS MUSTS: Visit the Arch and go hiking to Cañon de la Zorra. The arch is a magical place and brings me peace, and sometimes you can see turtles, manta rays, and even whales during the season. My favorite part of Cañon de la Zorra is the little oasis at the end of the hike where there is a waterfall and a lake for swimming.

FAVORITE RESTAURANT: El Farallon at the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal has great dishes and the best views of the ocean and coast—it’s amazing to dine while watching how the waves break against the rocks from the cliff where the restaurant is located. I especially love their sea-to-table menu. Last time I was there I had some grilled giant shrimp that were delicious!

EMPOWERING ADVICE FOR YOUNG WOMEN: Be brave enough to allow yourself not to be perfect. As an athlete, I am under constant pressure to be a good leader, to win, and to perform at the highest level. Despite that, I’ve realized that the highest pressure always comes from myself which takes a lot of energy and can sometimes be overwhelming. That’s why being brave enough to not be perfect has helped me have more compassion with myself, reminding me that my worth as a woman does not come from validation, medals, or any other achievement.

NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT: Headphones and a journal notebook. Also, a tip that has been a game changer for me is to drink electrolytes before and during a flight—especially long flights. Being on an airplane dehydrates our bodies, so as an athlete it is important for my recovery. It also helps my skin!
