ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES 1

CALL OF THE WILD

The magic of Africa lies in the serendipitous moments .

There’s a gentleness to the African bush. In all its raw nature, a sense of oneness can be discovered in the daily display of life and death. While on safari in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya (pictured), you’ll likely encounter most or all of the Big 5—lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo—but it’s the unplanned moments that will be forever etched in your memory: A mama “ele” munching grass from the savanna right in front of your private vehicle. The mating of lions at dawn as you soar above them in a hot-air balloon. And, if luck is on your side, you’ll catch the Great Migration, when wildebeest charge the maroon plains as a mushroom of dust trails their path. Here, nature is on glorious display, time slows, and the miracle of wildlife is celebrated every day.

ONE of my favorite parts of being a travel editor is working with the talented writers and photographers who journey the globe in search of compelling stories. The allure of travel is meeting people along the way, those who turn an anticipated trip into an unforgettable memory. Travel writers always have a way of returning home with wonderfully personal stories about new and favorite destinations.

With this issue, I was honored to work with some of today’s brightest talents seasoned, award-winning writers who have perfected the art of storytelling. For our cover story, we travel to Asia with Jen Murphy, who shares her favorite cities to visit for diverse pursuits, from history to art to food. New to Ultimate Experience s this issue, writer and photographer Alexandra Marvar inks a piece on five of the latest ways to adventure through South America, including an all-women-led trek in Peru. Amy Roberts reports on the best in both nature and nurture in Canada, while Editor at Large Ignacio Maza lends his insider’s take of Rome, a city that reveals something new and unexpected with every visit.

10 ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES
ROOM KEY WOW FACTOR /

MALLORCA, SPAIN

The Experience: Rocking gracefully at their moorings, sailboats catch the sun, like jewels tossed across the surface of the azure harbor. On land, ancient stone homes line cobblestone streets— the scents of lemon, orange, rosemary, and olive drifting on the breeze. This is Mallorca, some 150 miles across the Iberian Sea from the port of Valencia. It’s been called the crown jewel of Spain’s Balearic Islands, charming travelers for centuries: composer Frédéric Chopin, painter Joan Miró, and poet Robert Graves, who once said he found “perfect tranquility” here. Before them: Phoenicians, Romans, Moors. Along Mallorca’s coasts, UNESCO World Heritage status protects breathtaking hiking, biking trails, and ancient architecture.

The Stay: Near the Bay of Palma, minutes from lively Calvià, the Kimpton Aysla Mallorca is chic, luxe, and modern. Wow-factor, site-specific art installations bedeck the lobby, while across the grounds, guests will find every opportunity for fitness and wellness, including Maison Codage’s state-of-the-art spa, with the island’s lone halotherapeutic salt cave. Minutes from destination beaches yet tucked beside Mallorca’s PGA golf course, it also offers perfect, private tranquility.

MALOLO ISLAND, FIJI

The Experience: On Malolo, the largest of the Mamanuca Islands, find the quintessential crystal-clear waters, bone-white sand, and world-class surf breaks you’ve seen in the movies. Year-round, immaculate reefs offer sailing, scuba, and snorkeling—opportunities to be surrounded by tropical fish, as iridescent, brightly colored, and mystical as a mermaid’s tail.

The Stay: At Six Senses, Fiji, the spacious villas and multi-bedroom private residences are a speedy boat ride or heli-transfer from the airport. But upon arrival, guests feel as if they’ve happily left the world behind. Fijian cuisine, wellness indulgences (from lava shell massages to private meditation sessions), and cultural experiences combine with exceptional hospitality for a retreat where one’s idyllic tropical fantasies don’t seem so fantastical after all.

HAYMAN ISLAND, AUSTRALIA

The Experience: What the petite Great Barrier Reef island of Hayman lacks in size, it regains in reputation. This northernmost of Australia’s Whitsunday Islands—a 74-island archipelago so named by Captain James Cook, who first sailed them on Whit Sunday (Christian Pentecost) in 1770—has been a jet-set destination for over 70 years, and home to one of Australia’s most iconic beachfront resorts.

The Stay: Take part in this legacy at the InterContinental Hayman Island Resort , which opened in 2019 after a massive renovation. At this 168-key retreat, find spacious, contemporary suites, and infinity pools that weave about the landscape before appearing to blend into the sea. Experience the water by fishing charter, sea kayak, snorkel expedition, or sunset cruise. On land, miles of trails loop the tiny island: Keep an eye out for local fauna, from kookaburras to rock wallabies. Nearby, destinations like Whitehaven Beach, with its neon water and crystalline sand, set humankind’s standard long ago for tropical beach beauty, and few places in the world have yet to rival it. – alexandra marvar

Experts say more travelers are eyeing Australia and New Zealand — and it’s all about multi-city, multi-island trips.

ROOM KEY WOW FACTOR /
AUSTRALIA TOURISM

THE number of travelers to New Zealand rose by more than 700 percent last year. Australian tourism is growing too, on track to set records. According to experts at Journese ®—a boutique luxury travel provider known for bespoke itineraries —more travelers are setting their sights on longer trips. To that end, Journese is focused on interesting ways to get around, including by flight, by ferry, and on foot.

Ancient lighthouses, historic fishing villages, magnificent rock formations, art galleries, and distilleries. The Great Ocean Road (B100) is a classic Australian touring route along a particularly scenic stretch of Victoria coast. Over its approximately 413 miles, there’s something for every kind of driver, from koalas to surf breaks. In New Zealand, a new route—the Pounamu Pathway—opens to motorists later this year, promising not just scenery, but an immersive, interconnected, cultural experience, too: The indigenous Ngāi Tahu community and the special effects studio behind blockbuster trilogy Lord of the Rings partnered to develop four new visitors’ centers showcasing Māori history.

Prefer the passenger seat? Weaving coast-to-coast through the stunning Southern Alps, the TranzAlpine journey is one of a kind. Ranked amongst the best train journeys in the world, the TranzAlpine route is truly stunning. Cutting through the mountainous spine of New Zealand's South Island from Christchurch to Greymouth, the railway weaves through clifflined river gorges, over high mountain plains, over braided rivers, and around mountain lakes.

BY FOOT

Enjoy an easy walk through nature on the forgotten paths of an old town to visit a historic gold cave, today home to sparkling glowworms. Learn the history of the area and of the flora and fauna within this magnificent forest. Visit coastal scenery with white-sand beaches, huge beach caves, magnificent cliffs, old Māori Pa (village) sites, and offshore islands. A visit to the famous Hot Water beach is also included.

In Australia, learn about the Mala People and the importance of their ceremonies. Walk along the Kuniya Walk and visit Mutitjulu Waterhole. Here you will learn of the Creation stories of Liru (venomous snake) and Kuniya (python).

Auckland, New Zealand—the “City of Sails”—offers all manner of ways to get out on the water, including excursions across Viaduct Harbour in an official America's Cup yacht. On South Island, world-class whale-watching trips depart from Kaikoura.

In the red desert of Australia’s Northern Territory, one favorite is a sunset camel ride in Ulu ru-Kata Tju ta National Park.

Indigenous guides are experts in local flowers and herbs, and alfresco dining and stargazing are in store once night falls. For more travels with wildlife, visitors head Down Under seeking kangaroos, wallabies, and koalas. But on Victoria’s Phillip Island, they also flock to see the world’s smallest penguin species, Eudyptula minor, waddle ashore in huge groups each evening. A state-of-the-art viewing center offers guided experiences and VIP viewing platforms. For these penguins, as for spectators, it’s all in how you get there.

The Magic of O‘AHU

With Hawaiian adventure, education and relaxation, AULANI, A Disney Resort & Spa checks all the boxes.

IT’S a familiar family vacation conundrum: The adults dream of relaxing on a beach, while the kids lobby for Disney. At Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, there’s no need to compromise. The dreamy destination combines the tranquility of a Hawaiian vacation with the quintessential delights of Disney. Located just outside of Honolulu on the island of O‘ahu, Aulani Resort pays homage to Hawai‘i’s rich culture, natural beauty, and aloha spirit—all through the magical lens of Disney. Every bit of the resort is designed to feel like a true getaway with lush tropical walkways, a private Rainbow Reef lagoon, and a calming lazy river, plus, of course, poolside visits by Disney Characters and Mickey-shaped treats are available at Pāpālua Shave Ice and Ulu Cafe.

CELEBRATING CULTURE

The KA WA'A - A Lū'au is an enchanting and interactive journey through Hawaiian history. Fusing entertainment with education, guests will learn about canoe ( wa‘a ) journeys, which is how ancient explorers first came to the shores of Ko Olina. Before the island buffet dinner, kids can try their hand at pa ‘ i ai taro pounding or make an orchid bracelet. The threehour event concludes with a beautiful performance mixing traditional and contemporary dances to fully immerse guests in the stories of Hawai‘i.

AULANI WATER THRILLS

Thrilling water slides, a whimsical water playground, dreamy lazy river, secluded lagoon, and infinity-edge pool are just a few of the oasis destinations. For the ultimate poolside experience, book a private cabana in the Waikolohe Valley pool area. Next, grab your snorkel and swim with the colorful tropical fish in the Rainbow Reef, the only private snorkeling lagoon on O‘ahu, created especially for Aulani guests. Those who aren’t quite ready to jump in can still experience the wonders of the 3,800-square-foot reef through an innovative viewing window. And with the resort's picture-perfect location along the pristine shores of Ko Olina, guests enjoy easy access to the breathtakingly blue ocean and white-sand beaches.

AULANI RESORT FUN & GAMES

The Pau Hana Room serves as the resort’s luxurious communal living room, filled with activities and amenities curated for the entire family. The scavenger hunt, for one, is a must. It leads you to the Menehune Adventure Trail where you’ll solve riddles, discover delightful surprises throughout Aulani Resort, and learn more about Hawai'i and Hawaiian culture. The Pau Hana Room also abounds with arts and crafts including painting, T-shirt stamping, and classes to make your own Mickey ears. Not to be missed is the music class, where guests can learn to play, naturally, the ‘ukulele. – amy roberts

READY, SET, GALÁPAGOS!

Five reasons why you should sail the magnificent archipelago on Celebrity Flora.

IF visiting the Galápagos Islands is on your wish list, sailing on Celebrity Flora is the easiest—and most luxurious—way to make it a reality. At 333 feet long, the 100-guest vessel feels more mega yacht than cruise ship. There are on-shore excursions for every interest, cuisine for every taste, and a personal attendant for every suite. It’s no wonder in 2023, Forbes named it the best cruise in the Galápagos.

1. Celebrity Flora was custom-built to sail to the Galápagos Islands. Every space, including all 50 suites, face outward so you can take in the views at every moment. The upper deck was designed for stargazing, and the hull has custom-designed tenders on hand for spontaneous adventures.

2. It is one of the most eco-friendly and environmentally safe ships. Solar panels supplement energy, and a Dynamic Positioning Sand system preserves the seabed by keeping the ship in a fixed position without dropping anchor. Reverse osmosis equipment converts sea water into fresh water, accounting for 100 percent of the ship’s needs.

3. The onshore adventures are spectacular. Every day, the onboard certified naturalists from the Galápagos National Park take guests on up to three incredible excursions of choice. Visit a giant tortoise reserve. Hike through a Palo Santo forest. Snorkel with sea lions. Lean into your curiosity at the Charles Darwin Research Center. Shop and dine in the quaint town of Puerto Ayora. The options are delightfully plentiful.

4. The menus are carefully curated by a Michelin-starred chef. Whether you’re lunching alfresco at the Ocean Grill, sampling Ecuadorian cuisine at the Seaside Restaurant, or dining on the top deck under the sun (or stars), every dish is designed by awardwinning Chef Cornelius Gallagher.

5. These are the islands’ largest, most luxurious accommodations. Every guest room on Celebrity Flora is a suite: The two Penthouse Suites feature up to 1,288 square feet of space, while there are also two expansive Royal Suites, plus a range of gorgeously appointed Sky Suites. Perhaps the best part? Every suite comes with a private veranda and a personal attendant. – molly ginsberg

california

Dreamin’

Go west, where nature and culture abound, and the living is luxuriously easy.

VIEW FINDER WOW FACTOR /

THERE’S no one word that best describes California. For starters, it’s refined, adventurous, playful, innovative, laidback, divine, naturally inspired, cultured, gourmet, rejuvenating, unpretentious, and unspoiled. You could fill a whole notebook with glowing adjectives for the Golden State. But these identifiers aren’t just flattering words they’re a state of mind and a way of life. It’s impossible to narrow down the best places to visit (each one is extraordinary), but here are four destinations that top our list.

MONTEREY: NATURE MEETS LUXURY

Just off Monterey’s rugged coastline, the floor of the Pacific Ocean drops over two miles in depth, a plunge that produces nutrient-rich currents and creates a thriving ecosystem with one of the most biodiverse concentrations of marine mammals in the world. This diversity and sheer abundance of wildlife are why Monterey Bay has earned its nickname of “Serengeti of the Sea." Those looking for a more up-close-and-personal encounter with wildlife should spend a day at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world. Next, enjoy a stroll along Cannery Row, the waterfront district made famous by novelist John Steinbeck. Exquisite oceanfront hotels are plentiful, as are luxury boutiques, Michelin-Starred restaurants, and some of the world’s top golf courses.

SANTA BARBARA: BEST OF ALL WORLDS

Ask people what they love about Santa Barbara, and you’re likely to get dozens upon dozens of different answers. And that’s just the thing: there’s so many things to love, and all of them are magnificent. Gorgeous year-round weather, plentiful outdoor adventures, pristine beaches, sweeping cliffside views, historic architecture, boundless arts and culture, glorious restaurants, and boutique wineries are just some of the incredible experiences. Nicknamed “the American Riviera,” the city and its Mediterranean climate beckons those who are upscale, but far from uptight.

SANTA MONICA: FROM FARMS TO FERRIS WHEEL

World-renowned meditation classes and yoga retreats, earth-first spas (some of which are designed with seagrass walls), produce harvested from local farms, a crystal-blue ocean, and, on top of it all, the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel. These are just a few of the reasons why Santa Monica was recently named one of the "Best Places to Live" by Time magazine.

The beloved Santa Monica Pier isn’t just a famous landmark—it’s the unofficial divide of the three-and-a-half-mile stretch of beach. The North Beach Playground offers barrier-free equipment and sensory play elements designed to inspire activity, mobility, and imagination, while south of the pier, the iconic Muscle Beach is a sight to behold for fitness enthusiasts and not.

SAN DIEGO: BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY

Boasting some 70 miles along the Pacific, San Diego is home to 31 beaches, including the famed Dog Beach, where frisbee chasing fur balls are allowed to run free, swim, and even surf with their owners.

California’s Beach City is a perfect spot to vacation with the family, with renowned attractions like the San Diego Zoo, water sports galore, a sophisticated art scene, opulent resorts, and some of the best golf courses on the planet, including the famously challenging Torrey Pines. – amy roberts

IN 2023, AmaWaterways exemplified a commitment to the Black community with its inaugural Soulful Experience on the Rhône River. With a profound impact on guests, the overwhelming support has led to four new sailings for 2024, with even more on the horizon for 2025.

This year’s river voyages include Secrets of Egypt & the Nile, Colors of Provence (two offerings), and Enticing Duoro. In 2025, Stars of South Africa and Magic of Colombia will join the lineup. With carefully selected destinations and programming, each Soulful Experience is designed to celebrate Black history and culture, inspiring guests to delve deeper into their heritage and share it with future generations.

In Egypt, gain exclusive access to the tomb of the great Nubian Queen Nefertari on a private tour, or experience an invitationonly lunch at the Abdeen Presidential Palace. In France, rediscover Paris through the lens of the rich contributions of Black musicians, artists, and entertainers, past and present. In Portugal, the breathtaking Duoro River cruise allows a deep dive into the history of the African diaspora while visiting the famous, vibrant-hued Pena Palace, and in South Africa, visit the Soweto home of Nobel Peace Prize Winner and former president Nelson Mandela. Additional enrichment programs are currently in development, always refined by dedicated cultural advisors. Beyond historical connection, these specialized river cruises are meant to create a space for community and shared experience: the intimate luxury vessels host only 70-150 guests. From lavish receptions and wellness sessions to captivating lectures, the all-inclusive approach is centered on uplifting experiences and lifelong connections.

Cultural experiences continue on board with culinary adventures at various fine dining restaurants. Each chef-curated menu is a work of artistry, influenced by the thriving traditions of the destinations with bold, flavorful combinations. It’s no wonder AmaWaterways is featured on Food & Wine ’s Global Tastemakers List for “The Best 10 Cruises for Food.”

Full days turn into restful nights in the plush staterooms of the award-winning ships. Expansive balconies offer exceptional views, while the signature service is replete with a Cruise Manager overseeing each step of your journey. The professionally trained, English-speaking crew goes above and beyond, always making the comfort of guests a top priority.

Ultimately, a Soulful Experience cruise is intended to serve as a platform for empowerment and self-reflection—all while exploring some of the globe’s most fascinating destinations. Each excursion highlights the profound impact of Black culture across continents, fostering a deeper connection to one’s identity and each other. – crissibeth cooper

Behind the SCENES

With Oceania Cruises, there’s “simply more” to discover with shore-inspired experiences.

LESS might be more in certain situations, but when it comes to cruises, more is always more. Enter simply MORE™, which offers more inclusions than any other cruise line.

A clever tagline indeed, but simply MORE™ is also Oceania Cruises' brand promise to provide guests with more value, more choices, and more convenience. That’s why virtually all expenses are now included on Oceania Cruises: premium beverages, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and generous shore excursion credits.

Whether you’re hoping to dig deep into a city’s history, discover unique dishes, help solve environmental challenges, or immerse yourself in all of the above to gain a rich understanding of a local community, these four shore excursions are not to be missed.

BEYOND BLUEPRINTS tours provide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at some of the world’s most iconic architectural landmarks. In Belfast, a historian will help you explore the city’s contemporary landmarks, teaching you about its original docks and prehistoric settlements. In Bordeaux, discover the captivating, and sometimes controversial, engineering back stories, including tales of the modern and mesmerizing La Méca, which rises above the banks of the Garonne River—in juxtaposition of the region’s famous historical monuments.

FOOD & WINE TRAILS AND CULINARY DISCOVERY TOURS are intimate experiences for epicurean travelers. Learn the proper pizza dough tossing techniques in Naples. Discover how to spot the best produce on a farmer’s market tour in Argostoli, Barcelona. Stroll among 100-year-old heritage vines at a family-run winery in Tramonti, or forage with a master chef and help prepare what you harvested in cities like Helsinki, Bilbao, and Corfu. Hands-on cooking classes are customized for each itinerary and include lessons such as making pasta from scratch or learning about the art of tagine cooking.

GO GREEN TOURS are enriching opportunities to experience how communities conserve, sustain, and elevate their surrounding environments. There are more than 150 sustainability focused tours to choose from, all of which highlight thoughtful and creative solutions to address complex environmental challenges. Keep marine life from ingesting plastic as you help collect debris from the shores of Auckland with the Sea Cleaners organization. Learn the principles of organic winemaking in Almeria, then sample the earth-friendly products. Volunteer at the Al Rabee Society for Nature and Animal Protection in Jordan, where you can help feed, bathe, and care for homeless animals.

GO LOCAL TOURS offer guests intimate experiences from the perspective of just that, a local. These small group excursions feature insights from community leaders, visits to holy sites, and opportunities to learn from those who call the destination home. Hop in a tuk-tuk for a buzzy morning market in Bangkok. Receive a blessing at the Sri Maha Uma Devi Hindu temple. Experience the awe of Alaska as a naturalist guide helps you spot wildlife.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE INDIAN CULTURE 8

THERE’S perhaps no country as rich in culture and history as India. The Taj Mahal is always on the top of everyone’s list, while the lavish kingdoms of Delhi’s Leela Palace and the Rambagh Palace are also musts. Then there’s the Pink City of Jaipur, the incredible cuisine at every turn, and, of course, the mystical tigers.

With Micato’s Luxury Indian Journeys, new experiences abound at every turn—each one custom-designed by a highly trained Indian Travel Director who’s deeply knowledgeable about the region’s culture, customs, and dialects.

With three luxurious options, each of Micato’s India journeys feature curated itineraries: The Private Custom Journey is designed and customized for your private group’s journey. The Classic Journey Collection is for a small group, with three different itineraries celebrating the best of India. And with the Private Classic Journey, guests choose any departure of the three Classic journeys, which are then transformed into a private trip with your Travel Director and vehicle.

While every moment of your Micato journey will be seeped in beautiful culture, here are a few must-experiences.

1. Discover the Taj Mahal in private with an individualized tour from a renowned local historian. This magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience can be arranged via Micato upon request.

2. Take a Bollywood dance lesson with professional choreographers. The traditional folk dance is upbeat and dramatic, making it impossible to not have fun. Learn some moves from an expert, while your Travel Director will make sure to film you so you can forever remember the experience.

3. Visit a local school and connect with Indian teachers and children. A special opportunity to learn about Indian culture and customs from the perspective of some of the country’s youngest citizens, these meaningful experiences are oftentimes life changing.

4. Explore Humayun’s Tomb with an archeologist. Dig deep into the history of Emperor Humayun, who lies buried in this famous sandstone tomb, as a specialist from the Archaeological Survey of India brings the ancient stories to life.

5. Enjoy a private concert in the home of a master Sitarist in Northern India. There’s no better way to experience the stringed instrument’s beautiful sound that runs through the veins of Northern Indian culture.

6. Experience turban tying and henna painting. It’s tradition for men to have their heads wrapped in the colorful Rajasthani fabric, and for women to receive custom henna tattoos by local experts. Now’s your chance to try it with the best of the best.

7. Take a private guided walk through the breathtaking alleys of Old Delhi. Your personal Travel Director will guide you into the city’s most authentic spots, where you’ll sample new foods, explore spice markets, and meet local makers of perfume and garland.

8. Get an Indian makeover that’s customized just for you. Women can choose from a wide array of sarees or salwar-kurtas in vibrant hues, while men can select from traditional kurtas. – molly ginsberg

With a revitalized culture, art, wellness, and food scene, there’s no better time to visit Asia than now.

ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES 63

IT'S OFFICIAL,

Asia is back and more exciting than ever. Travelers are enchanted with this magnificent region, ready to rediscover the dynamic cities, dreamy beaches, wildlife-rich parks, and extraordinary cuisine. With so much to see across the expansive continent, the choices can be overwhelming, so we’ve curated our favorite destinations for five types of travelers.

FOR THE CULTURE CONNOISSEUR: CAMBODIA

People travel to Siem Reap for the temples—primarily UNESCO World Heritage site Angkor Wat. Upon arrival, however, they discover the city is a vibrant cultural hub of art, design, and food. Devote at least a day to exploring the jungle-ensconced ruins of Angkor Archeological Park, which spans more than 150 square miles. (Movie buffs should be sure to visit the Tomb Raider temple at Ta Prohm.) The eight galleries of the Angkor National Museum provide a deep dive into the golden era of the Khmer Empire. As for presentday marvels, Cambodian artist Theam Lim has turned his gorgeous home into an eponymous gallery and workshop where you can watch apprentices hone traditional crafts. Browse the hip shops of the Kandal Village neighborhood, such as lifestyle boutique Louise Loubatieres and clothing store Shop 676. In the evening, head to NGO-operated Phare, the Cambodian Circus, for a modern performance of dance, music, and acrobatics, or to Aspara Terrace at Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor to watch a traditional Khmer dance show.

WHERE TO STAY

Located just five miles from Angkor Wat, Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor transports guests to a bygone era with its colonialstyle design, Art Deco furnishings, and sprawling gardens. The hotel’s fine dining restaurant, 1932, specializes in Khmer cuisine. The more intimate Amansara, once a guesthouse for King Norodom Sihanouk, has just 24 suites, and travelers are paired with a private guide throughout their stay.

FOR THE ART ENTHUSIAST: HONG KONG

Hong Kong’s vibrant art scene has witnessed a recent creative injection by the local community. Discover fresh talent and brilliant new galleries, such as Young Soy, a space devoted to diversity, inclusivity, and the celebration of area artists, plus Gallery Ascend, which supports up-andcoming artists. Every March, the city attracts the art world’s biggest names with Art Week. The main event, Art Basel Hong Kong, is dedicated to modern and contemporary work by both established and emerging artists. At this year’s Art Basel, 285 leading international galleries were featured, along with artists from 40 countries. Meanwhile, the satellite fair Art Central showcases boundary pushing art from the 20th and 21st centuries. This year, more than 100 galleries participated—75 percent of them from the AsiaPacific region. Of course, collectors can customize their own art crawl any time of year: Essential stops should include marquee galleries like Tang Contemporary Art, White Cube, Gagosian, and Woaw.

WHERE TO STAY

Last fall, one of the city’s most iconic hotels, Regent Hong Kong, welcomed guests back after a decade-long closure. The property’s harborside location provides unrivaled views, and guests have their choice of six dining outlets, including a two-Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant and an outpost of Nobu. Occupying floors 38 to 49 of the Pacific Place tower, The Upper House is an oasis of calm floating above the Admiralty district. Designed by André Fu, the property showcases the works of some of Asia’s most renowned artists.

FOR THE WELLNESS DEVOTEE: THAILAND

Thailand has long been a haven for those in need of a mindbody reboot, and the country is brimming with restorative retreats informed by both Eastern and Western healing philosophies. And since these retreats are located within some of the country's most refined resorts, staying there elevates the luxurious experience.

WHERE TO STAY

With 56 pavilions and villas sprinkled on a secluded hillside overlooking the sparkling Andaman Sea, the property feels like a private sanctuary of tranquility. If you’re looking to jump start your fitness routine, Amanpuri has enticing options that connect you with the local culture and outdoors, from Muay Thai sessions and paddleboarding to a four-hour hike in Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Park. Stunning nature meets luxurious nurture in the Great White North. by amy roberts

There’s a difference between being “out of office” and being “off grid.” Canada delightfully leans toward the latter, allowing for the ability to log off and disconnect.

In The Great White North, it’s best to replace the glare of your laptop screen with a kaleidoscope of lights from the ever-changing night sky. The vibration of your phone is nothing compared to the throbbing adrenaline you’ll feel upon hearing the grunt of a grizzly bear. And for the full experience, nix FaceTime in favor of face-toface time with Indigenous People.

WILDERNESS RESORTS

Rustic yet refined, the resort offers nine luxury accommodations, from stilt houses overlooking Mackenzie Sound to stream-side forest cabins that border a glacier-fed waterfall.

The property is surrounded by lush rainforest, remote saltwater channels, and pristine wilderness, making it easy to spot whales, dolphins, sea lions, sea otters, bald eagles, black bears, and even grizzlies. Get whisked away by helicopter to one of the world’s most remote blue-ribbon fishing streams, and then share stories of the day’s adventures at the nightly campfire on the dock.

Skirting the banks of its namesake ocean inlet, the Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge features 25 luxuriously appointed safaristyle tents that are the epitome of glamping. For starters, each modern, well-appointed accommodation is purposely positioned to usher in commanding views of the Vancouver Island landscape. Settle into an Adirondack chair and sip your morning coffee on the deck of your Rainforest Ensuite tent, and end the day in the outdoor cedar shower, where nature and nurture are one in the same. Waterfront Ensuite tents are situated along the banks of the Bedwell River, designed to welcome the rising sun from the wraparound decks.

Set within the UNESCO-designated Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve, nature-based adventures abound: Take a heli-fishing tour and cast your line into a pristine stream filled with plump trout. Hike through a magnificent conifer forest. Spot wildlife as you kayak through Clayoquot Sound.

Owned and operated by the Klahoose First Nation, the Klahoose Wilderness Resort is surrounded by more than 2,500 acres of land that has been cared for by the Klahoose community for centuries.

Tucked along British Columbia’s Desolation Sound near the Homfray Channel, this all-inclusive resort was recently named one of the top 15 new hotels in the world by travel insiders at AFAR magazine. Another must: beach foraging with local chefs. When the tide is low, the chefs at SeaRoots host a special afternoon of foraging for shellfish and plants along Nova Scotia’s Acadian shore. A few hours later, you and your friends, old and new, will gather at the communal table for a six-course meal from the day’s harvest of clams, mussels, crabs, and edible seaweed. Local musicians, a cozy campfire, and stunning sunset are (almost) as good as the meal.

Before you head home, be sure to experience an iceberg beverage—made with ice carefully collected from Newfoundland's 20,000-year-old icebergs, which produce some of the purest water on earth. Try a craft cocktail made with Iceberg Vodka, the only one of its kind produced entirely in Canada, or tip back a refreshingly light Iceberg lager.

It’s easy to fall in love with Rome.

The wide-open piazzas, splendid architecture, delicious cuisine, incredible ruins, ochre-colored walls … well, you get the picture. But Rome, like God Janus of antiquity, has two faces. The city is magical, enchanting, and full of beauty. It can also be overwhelming, as there is so much to see and do which is why working with an expert advisor can provide a seamless vacation experience. To help you plan your journey, here is a curated guide for three days in Rome, with recommended places to stay.

ARRIVAL

Your flight from North America will most likely arrive in the morning or early afternoon. Resist the temptation to go to bed. Instead, conquer jet lag as you ease into the city. Get out in the sunlight, have an espresso, take a leisurely walk along the Tiber, go for an early dinner, and then get a good night’s sleep.

DAY 1: THE IMPERIAL CITY

To understand Rome, it’s best to explore the heart of the ancient city in this suggested order: Start at the Colosseum, Italy’s most visited site and grandest monument still standing from the Roman empire. In three tiers, this massive amphitheater could accommodate up to 50,000 spectators. Back in the day, the Colosseum’s lavish spectacles were held from dawn to dusk and could last for months. Shows included duels between gladiators and the slaughter of wild animals a system of ramps and lifts brought lions and elephants into the arena.

Next up is the nearby Roman Forum the center of an empire that stretched from England to Egypt, and the hub of commercial, political, and religious life in ancient times. Wander among the ruins of temples, palaces, and public spaces, visualizing what life was like 2,000 years ago. Don’t miss the commemorative Arch of Septimius Severus celebrating military victories, and the Temple of Saturn, the former treasury. Walk the Via Sacra, imagining religious processions and triumphant generals riding chariots. After a morning of classical ruins, it’s time for lunch. Try La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali in nearby Monti, which serves traditional dishes like cacio e pepe (spaghetti with cheese and pepper).

In the afternoon, walk up the steps to the top of Capitoline Hill to the Campidoglio Square, home of the Capitoline Museums, the oldest public museums in the world. Before ascending the steps, notice the enormous marble head, hand, and foot, remnants of a massive statue of Emperor Constantine. A short distance away is the Ara Pacis, “altar of peace,” celebrating the prosperity brought by Emperor Caesar Augustus. This renowned monument is displayed within a light-filled pavilion created by architect Richard Meier. After a day of wonders, cross the Tiber to the Trastevere neighborhood for an aperitivo at Freni e Frizioni, followed by a casual dinner at Le Mani in Pasta or Tonnarello.

DAY 2: THE VATICAN

Rome has the unique distinction of being capital of two countries: the Italian Republic and Vatican City, an independent city-state. For centuries, the Pope has been both its spiritual and temporal ruler, once governing over what was a vast domain. Today, Vatican City covers only 100 acres, smaller than New York’s Central Park, yet there’s so much to see and experience.

Begin your day at the Vatican Museums, one of the world’s greatest art collections. While your expert advisor can help secure reservations, make sure to visit at opening time, as the venues get busier throughout the day. The Vatican Museums include Egyptian, Roman, and Greek antiquities, sumptuously decorated galleries, modern art by Matisse, miles of countless art treasures, and courtyards for special events. Highlights include the frescoed chambers by Raphael, Gallery of Maps, and the crowning glory: The Sistine Chapel. This vaulted hall, built to the measurements of the Temple of Solomon as described in the Bible, features spectacular frescoes by Michelangelo on the ceiling and West wall, and the works of Botticelli, Pinturicchio, and other Renaissance masters on the side walls. Continue to St. Peter’s Square and admire the genius of Bernini’s design, with two semicircular rows of white marble columns representing the embracing arms of Catholicism.

Although there are many churches in Rome, none compare with St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest and most magnificent. The building you see today represents the work of 10 different architects spanning over a hundred years. The massive proportions of St. Peter’s are awe-inspiring, with the dome soaring 450 feet. Of countless works of art within the Basilica, the most famous are Michelangelo’s beautiful Pietà, the only work of art he ever signed, and Bernini’s baldachin over the main altar. After a morning of art and architecture, enjoy lunch at nearby La Zanzara, a neighborhood favorite known for exceptional pasta and tasty small plates. In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll through the Borghese Gardens, or visit nearby Castel Sant’Angelo originally the mausoleum of the Roman emperor Hadrian for splendidly decorated interiors and views from the terrace. Tonight, treat yourself to a Michelin-starred dinner at Imàgo, located on the sixth floor of the Hassler Hotel, with dreamy vistas of Rome from atop the Spanish Steps.

DAY 3: PIZZAS, PIAZZAS, & PALAZZOS

Bring your appetite when you experience the Testaccio Market, Rome’s quintessential neighborhood food hall, with 100 stalls selling seafood, baked goods, fresh produce, and just about everything edible. Taste a panino at Mordi e Vai, or a pizza al taglio at one of several kiosks. Stroll over to Giolitti for mouthwatering gelato my favorite flavor was strawberry. Continue to Campo dei Fiori, the last open-air food market in Rome and a great neighborhood for affordable meals or an aperitivo. Steps away is Piazza Navona, the city’s outdoor living room and my favorite public space. At the center of the piazza is Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers, one of the city’s finest works of art. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at Tre Scalini for traditional Italian cuisine, delicious tartuffo, and great people watching.

See the nearby Pantheon, perhaps the best-preserved monument from Roman times and famous for its vast coffered dome, with a round opening through which the interior is lit. For a window into the lives of noble Roman families, visit Palazzo Colonna, which is the largest of all noble palaces in the city (I suggest a private tour arranged by your expert travel advisor). The Colonna family has lived here since the 15th century and still does, as I caught a glimpse of a family member leaving the property. The sumptuous and richly decorated interiors will impress you, especially the Great Hall, a resplendent space with mirrors and chandeliers reminiscent of Versailles. Tonight, have dinner at Baccano, an informal brasserie known for its Mediterranean cuisine and outdoor seating. Nearby is the famous Trevi Fountain, a Baroque extravaganza of white marble. Make sure to toss two coins over your shoulder one to fulfill a wish, the other to ensure you return to Rome. It was Goethe who once said, “We are all pilgrims who seek Italy.” I agree.

THE ROADS LESS TRAVELED

From sacred mountain passages to stratospheric volcanic peaks, rainforests and waterfalls to sand dunes and aquamarine lagoons, the best way to experience South America is by active pursuit. All you have to do is pick your passion.

A WILDLIFE EXPEDITION IN ARGENTINA

For those visiting Argentina, Iguazú Falls should be on your list. Here, 275 separate cascades of glistening rainforest water rush together, forming the world’s widest waterfall. The story goes that when First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt laid eyes upon this natural wonder for the first time, her comment was, “poor Niagara.”

The biodiverse Iguazú National Park is home to myriad other wonders particularly rare tropical species of flora and fauna that can be hard to spot without the right expertise. Exploring by bike provides wildlife spotters smart, unobtrusive access, and enables sightings of jaguars (which gave this tract’s Yaguarundi Road its name), tapirs, iridescent butterflies, and hundreds of other species under the jungle canopy and along the shores of the River Iguazu. For the most memorable nature expedition, combine a bike trek with a guided experience in the company of a local biologist who can escort guests into special restricted areas.

A RIDE THROUGH BRAZIL’S LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES PARK

A few hours from the colorful city of Sao Luís on Brazil’s Atlantic coast, an unexpected brushstroke of brilliant, bright white is ranking high on travelers’ wishlists: Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, one of the world’s most unique beaches. Stretching for 40 miles along the sea and 30 miles inland, there is no forest, no grassland only gleaming white sand, undulating for miles, dune after dune.

In the rainy season, Lençóis Maranhenses is transformed, seemingly overnight, into an entirely different ecosystem as thousands of aquamarine blue lagoons emerge. Some may reach as deep as 10 feet, coursing with nearly 50 different species of fish and stunning birdlife including the vibrantly colored scarlet ibis, as well as herons, egrets, and toucans.

An exhilarating way to explore this area is by 4x4, alongside private guides who know how to navigate this otherworldly expanse of white sand crescents. They’ll recommend occasional stops for a refreshing lagoon swim, where, under the Brazilian sun, the water can warm to luxuriously high temperatures into the 80s Fahrenheit.

During the dry season, the pools evaporate in mere months, restoring this landscape to the appearance that earned its name in Portuguese, which translates to “bedsheets of Maranhão.” In other words, endless ripples of white.

The always snow-capped Villarrica volcano.

A VOLCANO CLIMB IN CHILE

Near the Argentine border about 470 miles south of Santiago, Chile’s Lake District is drawing new attention, especially from climbers, skiers, and snowboarders seeking thrilling heights of adventure. One of its crowning jewels, the always snow-capped Villarrica volcano juts out of the landscape, with its waterfalls, lakes, and glaciers catching the sun like a diamond.

Surrounded by a national park of the same name, Villarrica is one of Chile’s most active volcanoes. The indigenous Mapuche call it Rucapillán, “Great Spirit's House.” Some 50 eruptions have been recorded since the Spanish conquest of Chile in the 1500s, and today, it’s one of just a handful of volcanoes on the planet with a sometimes-active lava lake in the bowl-like basin of its towering crater.

When Villarrica is awake, the basin glows incandescent. When it’s asleep, climbers seize the opportunity: Gain nearly a mile in elevation over this 6.2-mile trek up Villarrica’s slopes in the company of professional guides who know the foothill groves of spiky, Seussian “monkey puzzle” trees and pyroclastic rock formations like the backs of their hands. (Mountain boots, walking poles, ice axes, crampons, and helmets are provided.) The reward: unforgettable views of the Andes from the 9,340-foot summit. Prefer to ski or snowboard? August through October are your best months, with terrain that ranges from beginner to expert.

A WOMEN-LED HIKE ON PERU’S INCA TRAIL

Historically in Peru, guiding has been the work of men. Women were seldom asked to take leadership roles in this revered stretch of the Andes mountains. Today, the Peruvian nature and adventure tourism industry is evolving, opening up new opportunities for Peruvian women, including those from Indigenous backgrounds with deep pride in their culture and deep wisdom of the landscape. More women are becoming porters, including on one of the continent’s pinnacle treks: the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

This sacred lost city is among the world’s most spectacular and best-known UNESCO World Heritage sites. A one-day trek to reach it winds through transitional landscapes, where snow-capped mountains collide with the lush rainforest of the Amazon basin. Travelers have long been drawn here not just for the breathtaking scenery, but for the powerful, historical significance of hiking this particular, millennia-old route through a bygone world of Incan ruins. With this journey, hike the trail’s final leg to Machu Picchu via the iconic Sun Gate in the company of women from the Village of the Flowers, a local community of artisan families.

A FOOD & BIKE TOUR IN PERU

Tourism to Lima, Peru has been on a steep upward trajectory in the past three years, and it’s no wonder: This South American capital is a portal to the Amazon, and of late, there is a new draw as a culinary awakening sweeps through the city. Today this city of 11 million is home to several restaurants ranked by “World’s 50 Best.”

Travelers can navigate Lima by bike, led by expert guides (and fellow foodies), cruising through scenic neighborhoods like seaside Magdalena del Mar, with its Spanish colonial architecture and ancient architectural sites, to experience a nuevo mundo of delightful bites. Some of Lima’s favorite foods are from indigenous traditions; others were imported by Spanish conquistadors from Europe hundreds of years ago. Some will be new to outsiders. Others like the national dish of lime-juicemarinated sea bass ceviche are already global favorites.

Patrice Henry, Korea Tourism Organization POSTCARD FROM...

FAVORITE KOREAN MEAL: Among the myriad of Korean culinary experiences, my personal favorite is temple food. Rooted in the principles of simplicity, seasonality, and the use of natural ingredients, temple cuisine transcends mere sustenance to nourish both body and mind. Ingredients like meat, fish, garlic, and onions are believed to disrupt meditation and stimulate desire, but temple cuisine focuses instead on plant-based ingredients. Fermented delicacies like kimchi and an array of pickled vegetables add depth and complexity to every dish. Embracing this mindful approach to food, temple cuisine offers a truly transformative dining experience that celebrates the harmony between nature and nourishment.

WISH-LIST TRIP: Yeosu, South Korea. Its breathtaking night scenery, with lights dancing upon the tranquil waters, is irresistible. Moreover, I’m eager to explore the city’s vibrant culinary scene, indulging in fresh seafood delights and the diverse flavors unique to the region.

CURRENT MUST-HAVE: K-beauty captivates me with its innovative skincare and cosmetics, emphasizing healthy, radiant skin through advanced formulations and natural ingredients. The industry's constant innovation and trendsetting keep me intrigued, fostering self-care in my skincare routine.

DREAM DINNER COMPANION: The venerable Jeong Kwan at the Baekyangsa temple in South Korea. Kwan gained fame primarily through the Netflix documentary series Chef’s Table , where she showcased her unique approach to cooking as a Zen Buddhist nun.

Her philosophy of using food as a means of meditation and her minimalist yet profound dishes captivated audiences around the world.

FASCINATED BY: The Jeju Haenyeo [female divers], on Jeju Island, because they symbolize strength, resilience, and a profound bond with the sea. Even in their eighties, many of these women continue to free dive, demonstrating incredible determination and endurance.
