Lodi is in every sense of the word its own place. Even the wine

bears a striking resemblance to no other wine in the world. Its personality, collectively both location and wine, is distinctly and particularly original. Here, it is common to meet the winemaker – the winery’s actual owner – pouring his or her creation and talking grapes in the tasting rooms. This is a wine region where people have lived for generations, growing their grapes in a sustainable fashion so they may preserve the land for their children and their children’s children. Lodi is a place where both wine aficionados and those simply seeking a different kind of escape are welcome in equal proportion.

historic shopping district. Lodi’s open-arms hospitality is genuine and its diversions remarkable. This guide will give you a taste of what’s in store for you in Lodi. But, as with the label on a fine wine, words and pictures reveal only so much. It’s much more fulfilling to actually experience it.

GOOD FROM THE GROUND UP

It’s the soil that makes this region so special. The grapes, originally the Tokay variety and now particularly the Zinfandel

(among many others), love this loamy dirt, which is blessed with the perfect amount of sand so the water drains in just the right manner. This earthy recipe allows the fruit to grow not too fast, not too slow. Just as the grapes are smitten with the special soil, we think you’ll find Lodi a particularly friendly place. For a town of fewer than 70,000, there’s an expansive list of activities to immerse yourself in. Exploring Arts. Theatre. Museums. And then there’s the wine. Ahh yes, the wine… Grapes have pretty much been at the heart of Lodi’s history. The distinctive soil and cool delta breezes transform the grapes’ ability to grow in plump abundance.

L o d i — A H i s t o r y o f F a m i l y Wi n e r i e s 1860s—The Phillips family’s greatgreat-grandfather Andrew Harshner and his wife Lucille homesteaded 160 acres near the town of Lodi, following the Civil War. Today, Michael and David Phillips, of Michael~David Winery, represent the fifth generation of growers in Lodi with 650 acres of premium wine grapes.

2 visitlodi.com

1907—George Mettler’s greatgrandfather first purchased the Harney Lane land, and his grandfather planted its first vineyard. George has been farming essentially all his life. Today at Harney Lane Winery, they have charge over every element of the winemaking process, from the vineyard to the barrel to the bottle.

1920—Congress enacted Prohibition. Although some farmers pulled up vines to plant other crops, the wine industry in Lodi continued to thrive.

1934—The first Lodi Grape Festival was held; 5,686 rail carloads of grapes were said to be shipped from Lodi that year.

1950s—John Van Ruiten, a young Dutch immigrant, had a dream of growing quality grapes and producing outstanding wines. After his arrival in the United States, he settled in the Lodi area and quickly, with his personal “sweat equity,” bought his first vineyard property. He planted zinfandel vines and began growing wine grapes in the Lodi Appellation.

1956—The federal government officially recognized Lodi as a wine grape-growing district, allowing vintners to label their wines as originating in Lodi. This row p 2 & 3, courtesy of Lodi Winegrape Commission

L o d i — A H i s t o r y o f F a m i l y Wi n e r i e s 1966—Third generation Steve Borra and wife, Beverly, bought the remaining 30 acres of the original, now 100-year-old farm. After a decade of success, he formally started Borra Vineyards.

1979—Robert Mondavi bought the land and historic buildings on Woodbridge Road to turn into Woodbridge Winery — one of the largest table wine labels in the nation.

1980—Locals Michael Crete and Stuart Bewley introduced their California Cooler, the nation’s first wine cooler.

CLIMATE AND SOIL

In fact, the climate and soil are so just-right that the Lodi Appellation was conferred upon the region in 1986. The designation

is a purple badge of honor that’s increasingly winning over wine fans who are discovering the special bottles on store shelves around the country. Today, over 100,000 acres of zin, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, viognier, syrah, merlot and cabernet sauvignon are harvested annually. Over 85 wineries, comprising 450 labels, are bottled here, and over 750 growers lovingly nurture the vines and call Lodi home. It’s a way of life that’s been central to Lodi for almost 140 years. But what’s so apparent is that success hasn’t gone to our heads. One varietal that has given the region the most notoriety is and has been the foundation of Lodi’s award-winning reputation as a fine wine region– zinfandel.

1983–The first annual Delicato Charity Grape Stomp, an ongoing community tradition celebrating old-world winemaking, took place.

1998—Hutchins Street Square’s final project, the Performing Arts Theater and Conference Center, was completed.

1999—Lodi Station featuring the renovated Southern Pacific Railroad station building was dedicated; population reached 55,800.

2001—The Lodi Arch Bear was rededicated on June 14 after being restored and given a 23-karat, gold-leaf finish.

2002—Council adopted a resolution designating the “rose” as the official flower of the City of Lodi.

OLD VINE ZINFANDEL

This particular grape does well with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures, so it thrives during Lodi’s summers. Many of Lodi’s

wineries feature “Old Vine” zinfandels, which are usually given that distinction when vines are older than 30 years. Many Lodi wineries have vines far older, some dating back to the 1800s. A visit to Lodi offers not only a taste of fine wine, but also a chance to meet some of the industry’s most interesting personalities and to enjoy the unbridled hospitality of real winemakers sharing the fruits of their love and labors. The winemakers — often fourth- or fifth-generation grape growers — still talk wine with their guests. Pop open a bottle in one of the 49 tasting rooms, pour it into a glass, sip, chat, repeat. It’s amazing how well you get to know a wine when you can converse with the Photos this page courtesy of Lodi Winegrape Commission

constitute the fifth generation of grape growers in the Phillips family, with Michael’s son Kevin, the winery’s V.P. of Operations, continuing the tradition into the sixth generation. The family continues to emphasize the importance of quality wines with unique and fun labels. Winemakers Adam Mettler and Derek DeVries specialize in producing Lodi’s famous Old Vine Zinfandels as well as Rhone varietals such as Viognier and Syrah for Michael~David Winery. The grapes used to create their wines are all part of the Lodi Appellation, the largest premium wine region in California, comprising over 100,000 acres and supporting over 80 wineries. With canny personalities and creative minds, Michael and David direct their focus on the philosophy that wines should be approachable and fun, hence the unique labels such as 7 Deadly Zins®, Earthquake®, Incognito®, and 6th Sense Syrah®. Each label has a mysterious, fun or humorous story about how it obtained its name.

instrumental as a source of fun and escape. Kayaking, pedal boating, laughing. For their day’s adventures, many visitors congregate on the shore of Lodi Lake, named by Sunset magazine as “one of the great inland beaches.” Just outside the city limits, from late September through early March, birders heed the call to watch the Greater and Lesser Sandhill Cranes make their annual migratory fly-in at the Isenberg Crane Reserve. Spying on a bird 5-feet tall and sporting a 7-foot wingspan is nothing short of breathtaking. If you are looking for family adventure, Lodi has something entertaining for every member of the family. Micke Grove Park is a destination unto itself. Visitors can explore the Micke Grove Zoo, sit in the shade of the Japanese Garden’s cherry blossom trees, or laugh and play together at Funderwoods Amusement Park. At the San Joaquin Historical Museum, visitors can learn about the history of the region, take in the antique tractor exhibit, visit the San Joaquin County Schoolhouse and tour the bang and clang of the blacksmith shop. Children and parents alike will enjoy a visit to the Serpentarium and the World of Wonders Science Museum, where education is fun and abundant. Bring your curiosity and a desire to discover, and you’ll see that wine is only a part of Lodi’s charm.

SHOPPING

DOWNTOWN STROLL, SHOP, SIP, SAVOR, REPEAT...

Since the renovation in the late ’90s, word has quickly traveled from shopper to shopper about the goods to be found in downtown Lodi. Taking a page from the town’s history, the renovation includes old-fashioned brick streets and inlaid golden sidewalks. Modern amenities feature informational kiosks plus arrays of colorful potted plants and a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. It’s a shopper’s dream, where you’ll find boutiques large and small, gourmet shops, and numerous restaurants and wine tasting rooms lining sycamoreshaded School Street. Several special events take place throughout the year as well. The School Street Wine Strolls (April and October), the Parade of Lights (December) and the Downtown Farmers Market ( June-August) will make your downtown experience that much more memorable. For an enjoyable excursion, take a few hours and tour the shops in downtown Lodi.
