we have a story W e ’ d L i ke To S ha re ...

There’s something special here in Lodi that we’ve been perfecting for a long, long time. It’s a subtle medley of ingredients that, like our exceptional wine, has only gotten better with time.

You’ll find it in the simple combination of rich soil, cool

Delta breezes on a summer’s evening, lush grass, a proud river and a storied history of welcoming travelers. Anyone who has set foot on this special land will undoubtedly attest to experiencing it. This is Lodi, California, and we’d like to introduce you to our remarkable tapestry of good people, great grapes and a back-story that all are welcome to enjoy. Lodi is a place where both wine aficionados and those simply seeking a different kind of escape are equally comfortable. There are museums to explore, elegant birds to admire, the Mokelumne River to cool off in, or you can leisurely stroll around our charming historic shopping district (window peaking always allowed). Lodi’s open arms hospitality is genuine and its diversions remarkable. This planner will give you a taste of what’s in store for you here. But, as with the label on a fine wine, words and pictures reveal only so much. Lodi invites you to discover the story that is greater than the wine itself.

It’s the soil that makes this region so special.

The grapes, once primarily the Tokay variety, but now the

zinfandel (among many others), love this loamy dirt. It is ground that has fostered generations of vines in the same way that it’s served as the foundation for the generations of families who grew up here. This special earthy recipe allows the fruit to grow–not too fast, not too slow–like the speed of the town itself.

LODI  PEOPLE BEHIND THE W INE

1860 Michael David Winery The Phillips family’s greatgreat-grandfather Andrew Harshner and his wife Lucille homesteaded 160 acres near the town of Lodi, following the Civil War. Today, Michael and David Phillips, of Michael~David Winery, represent the fifth generation

of growers in Lodi with 650 acres of premium wine grapes.

1870 Lange Twins Winery

During the 1870’s Johann and Maria Lange settled in Lodi and began a family farm growing non-irrigated watermelons with their son, Grandpa Albert. The farm grew

year over year and by 1916 the family added their first grape ranch. Today Randall and Brad Lange sustain their agricultural roots, growing their winery and wine brands as fifth generation winegrowers.

Mettler Family Vineyards Carl Mettler’s

great-great grandfather first purchased Lodi farmland and his great-grandfather planted its first vineyard. Carl, wife Gladys and family have farmed the land since the 1940’s. Today his son Larry, grandson Adam and the entire family are

involved with every element of winemaking for a new age of Mettler Family wines.

1924 Delicato Vineyard

In 1924, Gasparé Indelicato began planting grapes at his home in Manteca, California. In 1935, the first grapes were crushed by Gasparé and his

brother-in-law, using a hand driven press in their old hay barn. This first vintage had a yield of 3,451 gallons (1,400 cases). Today, Delicato Family Vineyards is one of the leading family winegrowers in America.

Just as the grapes are smitten with the special soil, we think you’ll find a fondness for Lodi and the people that make it such a special place. For a town of fewer than 70,000, there’s

still a warm smile around every corner, and always an adventure to be found, from communing with nature on a hike, to chasing your golf ball, to shopping and dining downtown. To stimulate your mind’s desires, you can experience the local arts by taking in a musical at Hutchins Street Square Performing Arts Theater, or experimenting with hands-on exhibits at the mesmerizing World of Wonders Science Museum. And then there’s the wine.

1966 Borra Vineyards

Third-generation grower Steve Borra and wife Beverly, bought the remaining 30 acres of the original, now 100-year-old farm. After a decade of successful grape growing, he formally started Borra Vineyards.

1978 Lucas Family Winery

The Lucas Winery was established in 1978 because they believed they had the soil, climate and vineyards to produce great wines. Their philosophy stated by wine maker David Lucus – “We believe wines should be crafted to reflect the place

they are from. Crafting organically farmed, hand harvested, unblended pure varietal wines is our specialty.”

2013 Jeremy Wine Co.

One of Lodi’s newest offerings is owned by Jeremy & Choral Trettevik. Jeremy has worked in the wine business for over 18 years and during that time gained knowledge on just about every aspect of wine. After Choral met & married Jeremy, she realized it was

inevitable that to love Jeremy meant to love wine as well. Through determination and naivete, they set out to achieve their dream.

behind TH E W I NE

Ahh yes, the wine…

Grapes have been at the heart of Lodi’s history.

Like a royal bloodline that grows stronger with each generation, Lodi’s grapes have naturally selected the best traits of their ancestry and continue to advance and thrive. The climate and soil is such a heavenly match that the Lodi Appellation was conferred upon the region in 1986. The designation is an honor that speaks for itself, increasingly gaining fans countrywide. Today, over 85 wineries, comprising 450 labels, are bottled here. (The Lodi region produces more wine grapes than any other California appellation.) This is a way of life that’s been central to Lodi for almost 140 years. But what’s so apparent is that success hasn’t gone to our heads—more like our hearts. The winemakers —often fourth or fifth generation growers—are proud parents. They thrive on the opportunity to talk wine with their guests, and tell the stories that make their grapes such a success—right down to each distinct flavorful personality. The winemaker will likely be the one to top off your glass. It’s amazing how well you get to know a wine when you can converse with the person who put so much love into it.

dining

dine out dig in

When you’re surrounded by rich farm country, wild ranches, ample wineries, and only a hop, skip and jump from the ocean—eating fresh, delectable food is as simple as picking up the fork. The region’s collective surf and turf offerings take center stage on the

diverse menus you’ll find throughout Lodi. With all the fresh ingredients Lodi chefs have at their fingertips, dishes are simply more savory, rich, and filled with bright flavor profiles. Lodi’s dining selection runs the gamut from American to Asian cuisine, Italian to International, pizza to brew pub, and everything in between. Your challenge will be deciding what and where to eat. An evening walk down the golden sidewalk takes you past a casually fun brewery, the spicy temptations of an Asian bistro, upscale chic, a candy store for the sweet tooth and authentic Mexican fare. And that’s only down one street. Let your taste buds take the lead, there’s no wrong direction for the foodie in Lodi.

Visual Arts, Theater, Galleries, Music. Lodi is making a name for itself as a first-class art scene.

At the Hutchins Street Square Performing Arts Theater, visitors can enjoy live concerts and

theater performances year-round. Lovers of the visual arts will find pleasure admiring two of

the main galleries Lodi has to offer, both of which have become destinations of choice for art collectors nationwide. The Knowlton Gallery, in downtown Lodi, showcases fine artworks in

the form of paintings and photography, all created by Northern California artists. David Foster Gallery and Studio specializes in watercolors on canvas, and abstract fine art, he also hosts two annual art shows in June and October featuring his own work and the works of local artists so you can take a piece of Lodi’s culture home.

In addition to several other galleries, Lodi is a canvas for more than a dozen public murals,

and hosts numerous art-related events throughout the year, including the monthly Art Hop.

Water is key here.

The purling Mokelumne River water, a product of snowmelt from the

nearby Sierra Nevada, nourishes our robust grapes and is responsible for their succulence. It also makes for a great escape. Popular watersports like kayaking, pedal boating, swimming and fishing keep visitors and locals alike outdoors, as they shed layers to cool off in nature’s own swimming pool. For some relaxation, visitors unwind on the shores of Lodi Lake, named by Sunset magazine as “one of the great inland beaches.” Just outside the city limits, from September through February, birdwatchers can set eyes upon the majestic Sandhill Cranes, as they make their annual migratory fly-in at the Sandhill Crane Reserve. Spying on a bird 5-feet tall and sporting a 7-foot wingspan is nothing short of breathtaking. If you bring the whole family, Lodi has something for every member. The Micke Grove County Park is a destination unto itself. Visitors can explore the Micke Grove Zoo, sit in the shade of the Japanese Garden’s cherry blossom trees, or take a thrill ride on one of the coasters at Micke Grove Fun Town Amusement Park. At the San Joaquin Historical Museum, visitors can learn the deep history of the region, take in the antique tractor exhibit, visit the San Joaquin County Schoolhouse and tour the bang and clang of the blacksmith shop. The whole clan will enjoy a visit to the Serpentarium and the World of Wonders Science Museum, where you get a fun hands-on education. Bring your curiosity and a desire to discover, and you’ll see that there is more magic to Lodi than what’s in your glass.

SHOPPING

downtown Stro l l , S ho p, S i p, Re p e at

Downtown Lodi’s renaissance began in the 1990’s when the downtown was redesigned with modern flair while still retaining a touch of small-town charm. Now. Reveling in this chic renewal, Lodi’s numerous boutiques and

eateries are the “place to be” for savvy shoppers and diners. Keeping with the town’s history, the renovation includes old-fashioned street lamps and rustic brick streets. Modern amenities feature informational kiosks plus arrays of colorful potted plants and, its best feature, a smile on the locals’ faces. It’s a shopper’s Neverland, where you’ll find one-of-a-kind local stores, as well as your classic favorites. Numerous restaurants and wine tasting rooms line sycamore-shaded School Street—where the first town school was built. Stroll these charm-filled streets and experience a variety of specialty shops like Cheese Central, Olive Heaven, as well as chic upscale clothing shops, home decor and of course tasting rooms for a variety of local wineries. Make sure to stop by our new Downtown Visitor Center at 25 N. School St.— it’s the perfect first stop to plan your day. Downtown Lodi is the perfect diversion - take a few hours and browse, dine, sip and take in the charming atmosphere that can only be found in this quintessential historic town.
