In summertime, the abundance of sunshine promises fun-filled days, capped off with sunsets that bathe the majestic mountains in rich hues of pink, purple and magenta. Few places in the world can boast so much grandeur alongside so much natural beauty. With its diverse array of recreational activities along with a splendid selection of culinary delights, summer in North Lake Tahoe is a must do on any traveler’s list. During the winter months, snow settles silently like a fine dust upon the granite boulders surrounding the Lake. Located in a glacial valley along the northern crest of the Sierra Nevada’s western slope, its sculpted mountain architecture appears with a startling suddenness along the shore of this pristine lake. The big peaks, the famed landmarks and towering trees stand frosted in a winter cloak that can only be

described as enchanting. Whenever you visit–you will be enthralled by both the beauty, and the incredible variety of activities that abound on water, in resorts and towns and on our mountains. Let the pages that follow tell part of our story – and visit our website

incline village Incline Village occupies the most northern point of Lake Tahoe. This Nevada town received its name from “the Great Incline of the Sierra Nevada,” a funicular that used to carry timber nearly 1,400 vertical feet from the Lake and over the mountain for use in the silver mines of nearby Virginia City. Today, the Flume Trail uses the route of the historic flume, and is one of the most famous mountain bike rides in the world. The backside of the trail is home to one family resorts. Just a ten-minute drive over the mountain is Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, a resort famous for its vistas of both the lake to the west and the high desert valley to the east. Mt. Rose offers affordable lift tickets and packages, and a variety of terrain, from family friendly groomers to super steep, tree lined chutes. Mt. Rose

Just a short drive from Incline Village is Sand Harbor, where swimmers can explore polished rock formations, turquoise water and miles of soft sandy beach. Each summer Sand Harbor is host to the famous Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and with Tahoe as a backdrop, the Bard never looked better. A visit to Incline would not be complete without a visit to its quaint galleries,

A favorite dinner and evening cocktail spot is the Lone Eagle Grille, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe’s award winning lakefront dining room. Imagine a blazing fire ring on the Hyatt beach, under a full moon that reflects in a mirror-like lake, and you’ll know why the Lone Eagle Grille is a favorite local spot for romance.

kings beach Legend has it that at the turn of the 20th Century local businessman Joe King obtained logger Robert Sherman’s large lakefront parcel in an all-night poker game. Located only a mile from the Nevada border, visiting Kings Beach is never a gamble. At first glance, Kings Beach may seem like a sleepy little town – but trust us – it contains enough shops and hidden treasures to surprise the most “been there, done that” vacationer.

12 GoTahoeNorth.com

Just down the road, the Old Brockway Golf Course touts itself as one of the region’s oldest and demands strong drives and a sound short game. At night, visitors revel at memorable meals provided at a variety of restaurants such as Lanza’s (Italian), Caliente! (Mexican), and Hiro Sushi (Japanese), to mention a few. Kings Beach offers a plentiful variety of moderately priced accommodations, all with a close proximity to all of North Tahoe’s ski resorts and snowmobiling outfitters. Kings Beach is the perfect home base for snow sports, sun sports, and all varieties of outdoor recreation. Chris Talbot

Its epicenter of activity is the Kings Beach State Recreation Area, once the site of Joe King’s estate. Here, the winds blow their freshest against wide, unbroken scenery and secluded sand dunes. Sunshine streams down on fresh-faced beachcombers enjoying an array of water sports and activities. Visitors can enjoy everything from parasailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle-boarding to volleyball, crafts shows, and live music.

crystal bay crystal bay

Just above the glittering casinos in Crystal Bay, the Stateline Fire Lookout offers a vantage point unlike any other at Lake Tahoe. A short and scenic hike takes you to a point high above the lake that is surrounded by dwarf oak and old growth pine forest. From this 7,077 foot crest, spectacular vistas of Crystal Bay, Brockway Springs and the entire Tahoe Basin unfold below you. Self guided sign posts walk you through the history of the region, which was once the stomping grounds of Mark Twain and many lumber barons in the 1800’s. Today, this jewel is known more for dining, gaming and entertainment. The Cal-Neva Resort, The Crystal Bay Club and the Tahoe Biltmore Lodge and Casino each offer excellent dining, gaming, hotel rooms and a bustling music scene. The Crystal Bay’s Crown Room stage and Red Room Cabaret offer world class rock, blues, jazz and comedy, and of course dancing, every night of the week. The Cal-Neva, once owned by Frank Sinatra and frequented by the likes of the Rat Pack, the Kennedys, and Marilyn Monroe, straddles the border of California and Nevada. It’s rumored to be where Marilyn spent her last weekend. Past owners and guests claim it’s haunted by some of these famous celebs. For a bit of romance, the Soule Domain restaurant adjacent to the soon to be developed Tahoe Biltmore, offers fine dining in a historic log cabin built by Harry Riley at the same time as the original Cal Neva Lodge in 1927. The hearth features stones quarried at Crystal Bay and exposed log beams from local mills.

tahoe vista / carnelian bay Historically ports of call for the logging industry and Tahoe’s steamships, Carnelian Bay and Tahoe Vista occupy the northwest shore of Lake Tahoe. The wilderness the Paiute and Washoe Tribesman used as favorite summer camps today serves as a hub for the communities, which include beachfront accommodations, fine dining, and sandy and pebbled beaches. In the summer months, kayakers paddle the shoreline amongst families of Merganser ducks floating in front of secluded beaches. There are a plethora of beaches to choose from here, from the soft sand and shallow waters of Moon Dunes vintage wooden yachts travel in and out of Sierra Boat Company and North Tahoe Marina. Each year, Sierra Boat Company hosts the Concours d’Elegance – one of the largest classic wooden boat shows in the world. Little did George Schaffer realize 140 years ago that the site of his logging camp would become home to some of North America’s best skiing and riding. Today, boarders and skiers rocket down mile-long runs from the backside of Northstar Resort’s Mt. Pluto or carve off-piste turns through stands of lodgepole from the top of Sawtooth Ridge. While the backside of Northstar Resort offers everything from ridgeline cruising to narrow bump trails and steep drops, the resort’s front side combines lightly forested glades and wide-boulevard groomers that stretch to an expanding base area. Northstar Resort’s family programs are some of the best in North America, but it is the resorts billion-dollar expansion that is creating the most buzz. The Village at Northstar offers visitors an appealing array of world-class accommodations, shops, restaurants, and skating rink, all with ski-in, ski-out accessibility. New for winter 2009-10, The Ritz-Carlton Highlands, Lake Tahoe will open at mid-mountain at Northstar Resort, featuring a world class spa in addition to the uncompromising ambiance that is Ritz-Carlton.

Named by its first pioneers after the residing Paiute chief Tru-hi-zo, called ‘Truckee’ by the emigrants he helped guide west, the historic railroad settlement prides itself on being all things to all people. It retains the feel of a rarefied mountain outpost, yet has grown into a genuine and sophisticated community, chock-full of excellent dining, quality lodging, and unique shopping and maintains a legacy as one of the Wild West’s favorite watering holes.

Set against a bold blue sky and rugged Sierra Nevada Mountains, the town is a launch pad for adventure. Nearby Donner Summit offers world-class alpine and Nordic skiing. Sugar Bowl Ski Resort is a powder skier’s dream with its wide open bowls and high and dry elevation, at the very peak of the summit. Thrill seekers explore the vast backcountry. Others escape to their own solitude, fishing, and exploring the area’s numerous lakes and streams. Let’s not forget those who enjoy the challenging greens and fairways at some of the region’s best golf courses – Coyote Moon, Old Greenwood and Northstar to name a few.

Truckee’s quaint downtown corridor swells with an unabashed nightlife and rows of galleries, shops, and restaurants. From casual to ultra-hip, the revelers feast on everything from sushi and steaks, to pasta and pizza at signature restaurants such as Moody’s Bistro, Pianeta, Pacific Crest and Cottonwood at Hilltop Lodge. For a dose of local color, you can visit a variety of casual pubs and kicked back nightclubs all within walking distance of each other in the downtown area.

squaw valley No other ski area in the west embodies old-world alpine spirit like Squaw Valley, and the buzz this year will be the 60-year anniversary of the founding of the resort, with events galore to celebrate this milestone. Site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley’s allure has always been its imposing geography. Carved from six peaks spread over the 4,000 acres and served by 33 lifts, the resort is the very definition of downto-earth carving. Yet for all the eye-popping pitches, the mountain is very friendly to all, cradling the novice and purring to families. Many runs are on gentle, soothing trails that offer a wide spectrum of delights. Off-slope, Squaw’s base area offers climbing walls, shopping, Nordic touring, snowshoeing, and a bevy of bars and restaurants. The 4-star, slope-side Resort at Inn, the Squaw Valley Lodge, and the Village at Squaw Valley, complement Squaw Valley’s magic. At night, the upscale eateries such as Graham’s, PlumpJack Cafe and Six Peaks Grille at the Resort at Squaw Creek create some of Northern California’s

alpine meadows Off-piste wilderness skiing, flawlessly groomed cruiser runs and wide open bowls of powder make Alpine Meadows a bastion of Sierra Nevada skiing and snowboarding. This resort’s

high valley floor (6,835 feet) guarantees abundant snowfall. Even better than the snow is the terrain which covers 2,400 acres of glades, groomers, and the resort’s famous steeps. Its multitude of fall-lines offer views of cobalt-colored Lake Tahoe from nearly every run. Best of all are Alpine’s “Adventure Zones,” which provide a backcountry style experience within the ski-patrolled boundary. Its mountainside restaurant, The Chalet, is located in a nest of pine trees midway up the mountain. It’s a great place to rendezvous and sit on the deck and enjoy sandwiches, quiche and homemade soups. The new après-ski hot spot at Alpine Meadows is the Last Chair Bar & Grill. Located in the lodge just steps from your real last chair, the Last Chair Bar & Grill features favorite drafts and micro brews, select wines, and delicious appetizers like artisan cheese plates, sausage Bill Stevenson

and sauerkraut platters, and gourmet flatbread pizzas. Live music in the Last Chair is a tried-and-true transition from ski boots to dancing shoes. Down the road, the bar in the historic River Ranch Lodge is a local gathering place with front row views of the Truckee River. A day of exploring Alpine’s legendary terrain is religiously followed by gathering at River Ranch.

tahoe city Washoe tribesmen named their campsite in the corner of Lake Tahoe “Daubey Odu” – roughly translated as “running over,“ referring not to the Lake, but to the riches of the area’s fish and game. However, Tahoe’s true wealth was not discovered until 1864 when local prospectors laid out a small town at the intersection of the Truckee River – Lake Tahoe’s only outlet, and the Lake, and named the town Tahoe City. Originally constructed as a port of call and end of the line for the Lake Tahoe Railway – historically and today – Tahoe City stands as the gateway to all that is the Tahoe Basin. Time has chiseled away some of the edges of its history, but its huge array of year golf and water sports in the summer, continues to make Tahoe City a town with unstoppable charm. Tahoe City is one of Tahoe’s most popular destinations because of its quaint downtown shopping and dining district and some of North Lake Tahoe’s most authentic local dining establishments, like Rosie’s for a fireside breakfast and the

In summer, Commons Beach, the heart of downtown, comes alive with kayakers, swimmers, sunbathers, free evening movies, and free concerts on the beach. The weekly farmers market is just the ticket for stocking up for a week of picnics and beach barbeques. Just a stone’s throw away is the historic “Fanny Bridge,” named after what you see of the tourists who often line the sidewalk on the lake side to ogle the monster rainbow trout awaiting handouts.

46 GoTahoeNorth.com

In the winter, Tahoe City is a popular destination due to its proximity to the mountains. Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are just a 10-minute drive away, and for that matter any ski resort in North Lake Tahoe is a short and scenic drive away. Just a few steps from any of its fine lodging options, winter vacationers will find easy access to backcountry and Nordic trails. Cross-country and snowshoe aficionados will revel in the lake vistas at Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area, and enjoy a steaming hot cocoa at one of the area’s well-stocked huts.

westshore In 1909, Arthur Jost built a small pier and hotel at the water’s edge five miles south of Tahoe City in a sheltered section of lake under the shadow of Ellis Peak. He called his friendly resort “Homewood, and all the name implies.” Today the location’s real charm rests along the 21 miles of its shoreline, with bike paths and beaches in the summer months and in winter, Homewood Mountain Resort (one of Tahoe’s “secret” ski resorts.) Westshore also boasts the newly refurbished 1960 Winter Olympic Cross-Country ski trails at Sugar Pine Point State Park and the historic sledding hill at Granlibakken Resort. Homewood Mountain Resort has always retained an air of adventure and has been a favorite lair for hardboiled skiers from near and far, who are attracted to the resort’s incomparable views, tree-protected runs, nostalgic atmosphere and views that encompass the dramatic panorama of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline.
