Inside: Lake Tahoe Olympians

Skier and boarder WINTER Vacation Guide 14|15
When the best of the best call Lake Tahoe home, it’s pretty clear there’s something incredible about this place. A region that produces more winter Olympians than anywhere else in the country must have a secret stash of perfection. Could it be extraordinary dumps of snow? Consistently amazing skiing and riding conditions? Outrageous elevations? All of the above? The answers are yes, yes, yes and yes. Welcome to Lake Tahoe, folks. It’s time to play where the big boys and girls play.

Let’s start with the variety, shall we? Lake Tahoe is home to the largest collection of ski and snowboard resorts in all of North America, adding up to a monstrous 22,060 skiable acres. That’s nearly 35 square miles …16,940 football fields … or as we like to say, a heck of a lot of terrain. It’s your call, so spend time wherever you like. Choose from steeps and speedways, bowls and bumps, powder and packed. Soar through a terrain park like you’re collecting frequent-flier miles. With the Lake Tahoe brand of variety, you can test your skills at everything—day after day after day.
Even Mark Twain gushed about the splendor. In Roughing It, a travelogue written in 1862, Mark Twain wrote, “Three months … on Lake Tahoe would restore an Egyptian mummy to his pristine vigor … I do not mean the oldest and driest mummies, of course, but the fresher ones.” Be honest—have you ever read a travel recommendation better than that? Twain was definitely onto something. Lake Tahoe is the tenth deepest lake in the world, boasting water clarity to 70 feet. “So singularly clear was the water,” he wrote, “that where it was only twenty or thirty feet deep, the bottom was so perfectly distinct that the boat seemed floating in the air!” We couldn’t possibly make this stuff up. It’s really that spectacular. Consider the beauty of the lake, add the majesty of the mountains, and toss in the abundance of snow, and the result is the perfect package. Mark Twain knew it. Our Olympians know it. And you can know it, too. S k i La k eTa ho e . co m 1
Here, snow and sun are in perfect proportion. There’s no doubt that Mother Nature has chosen Lake Tahoe as her favorite child. Every fall and winter and well into spring, she blesses us with an average of 500 inches of snow, so it’s not unusual for things to get rolling as early as October and last as late as July. In a single week in March 2014, five feet of fresh snow fell on the Ski Lake Tahoe resorts, creating the deepest powder conditions of the season. Yep. We said March—late in the month, in fact—when resorts in other parts of the country were bidding adieu to winter sports. All that snow is balanced by an average of 300 days of sunshine each year, so you get to ski and board with the sun on your face, pure joy in your heart, and a fabulous snowpack under your feet.
We’ll keep you busy — we promise.
Lake Tahoe’s accolades are piled up as high as our Olympic medals and our snow: • Best Lake in America — USA Today: 2012 • Number-one ski destination — Rand McNally: 2010-11 • D estination for early season travel bookings — Orbitz: 2010-11 • Winter destination — Orbitz: 2008-09 • Number-one U.S travel destination — TripAdvisor: 2008

Whatever’s on your list for a winter vacation, it’s yours for the asking at Lake Tahoe. In addition to offering every imaginable snow sport, the region is also home to fabulous live entertainment, cabaret shows, gaming, art galleries, après-ski festivities, fine dining, and endless fun for the kids.

Welcome to Tahoe South, where Sierra sunsets meet the Silver State’s lucky streak, blackjack meets blue water and adventure gains altitude. Add fine dining, fresh powder and world-class hotels—there’s more than one way to go all in, and we are heartily in favor of all of them. So cap off your day on the slopes with a night on the town. Catch some air, catch a show, enjoy a cocktail under more stars than you’ve ever seen in your life. On the wild side of the lake, you can roll the dice, dance til dawn, hike a trail, heck, blaze your own. The adventure begins at TahoeSouth.com.
Nevada – A World Within. A State Apart. Are you the breed of snow lover who knows in your soul that mountains are living, breathing things? Then you and your planks need to sample Nevada’s goods. Ruby, Santa Rosa, Schell Creek, Toiyabe, Carson and Sierra Nevada… these are the names that will give your heart the flutters. They’re some of the 150 distinct mountain ranges that track a north/south longitude across the state, making it the most mountainous in the contiguous US (second only to Alaska if you’re considering all of the United States). That means alps-like heli-skiing and backcountry bliss in the Rubies. Lift-served nirvana around Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas (yes, Vegas). And high-desert rollers with big, fat pillows of windblown fluff that’ll write a big fat smile across your mug. Then, when the day’s done and the runs are run, you can après in true, unhinged Nevada fashion. Nevada is for a special kind of snow lover. You, perhaps? Visit TravelNevada.com/OutThere for details.

There’s so much going on in the region that you can play, explore, and indulge nonstop for weeks, months—years, even—without once hitting the repeat button. Think we’re exaggerating? Just take a look at what’s in store.
On the snow With snow like Tahoe snow, it just makes sense to offer up masses of different ways to play in it. When you’re not enjoying some of the best skiing and riding on earth, you can satisfy the little kid in you with snowtubing, snowbiking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, snowkiting, and snowsurfing. If it’s a sport that starts with “snow,” you’ll find it here. You can also enjoy cross-country skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing at the new Tahoe City Winter Sports Park. Located on the Tahoe City Golf Course, it offers ideal terrain enhanced by incredible views of the lake. And if you want to savor a quiet bit of romance, try a moonlit sleigh ride through some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable.

Off the snow Take a cruise on an authentic paddle wheeler and see for yourself why people have been writing about the stunning beauty of Lake Tahoe since forever. Soar far above the mountains in a hot-air balloon or helicopter. Shop like a pro, play a round of golf—even in winter—or have a picnic in the sun. Savor a taste of culture at an art or photography exhibit. Experience the magic of live theater or a concert. It’s all here, just waiting for you.
Special events At Lake Tahoe, just about anything is cause for celebration. Fresh powder! A full moon! Tuesday! Throughout the season, special events rule. From celebrity ski races to freestyle championship events … from winter carnivals to ski-run torchlight parades … from wilderness awareness trips to mountain treks … there’s something special going on at every turn. For a true taste of the Tahoe winter spirit, hang out with the locals at Heavenly Holidays, a two-week festival held in late December in Heavenly Village. The event features caroling, live music, ice sculpting, magicians, jugglers, professional ice-skaters, live ice sculpting, and a parade.
Reno happenings Reno is the perfect place to spend a day or two when you dare to break away from the mountain. All winter long, you can participate in pub crawls and wine walks along the Truckee River and neighboring streets in downtown Reno. For the height of festivities and fundraising, you’ll want to catch the Santa Pub Crawl on December 13. Nearby Sparks hosts the Sparks Annual Hometowne Christmas Celebration on Victorian Square December 5-6, and classical music lovers can celebrate the holidays at the Nevada Chamber Music Festival December 26-31. For a bit of education and inspiration, be sure to stop by the Nevada Museum of Art, the only nationally accredited art museum in the state of Nevada; the Nevada Discovery Museum, a hands-on learning environment for kids; or the National Automobile Museum, one of the top five in the country. And for a down-country good time, you’ll want to check out the new Gilley’s Saloon, styled after the dance hall and saloon featured in the film Urban Cowboy.
Total indulgence Occasionally, it just feels right to give in to a little “me” time. When the body and soul demand pure relaxation, try a dip in an ahhh-inspiring hot spring or bubbling hot tub. Rejuvenate with a spa treatment or muscle-soothing massage and let all but the most peaceful thoughts slip away. After all, you’ve been playing pretty hard. You deserve this.
Electric nightlife The excitement ramps up when the sun goes down, so bring along as much energy as you can muster. Pretend you’re an extra in Casablanca and try your hand at gaming. We’ve got blackjack, poker, Pai Gow, roulette, craps, and slots, so you can cruise around the casinos to find where your good luck takes you. Lake Tahoe is also the place to find absolutely top-drawer entertainment, featuring singers, bands, and comics you actually know and love. Want more? Catch a cabaret show or Nevada-style revue, luxe out in a dazzling nightclub, or meet up with your pals in one of Tahoe’s many one-of-a-kind bars.
Culinary delights Food, glorious food! Just pick a country and we’ll provide the restaurant. Lake Tahoe offers options from around the world, so you can take a culinary side trip to France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Japan, China, Thailand, Greece, or the good ol’ USA. From steak to sushi … from pasta to pad thai … from enchiladas to empanadas … it’s on the menu. And whether you’re in the market for an elegant candlelit dinner or a quick-and-easy meal, we’ll serve it up in style.
