enough to slip away to, yet worlds apart.

Its

vast and deep crystalline waters have held visitors in its spell since the first one chanced upon it.

In

Today

its serene

beauty remains unchanged, waiting to do the same for you.

In the Summer… Matt Smith

Full sensory ahs. Bottomless blue waters, emerald pine and fir draped just below granite peaks that trace a fine line between heaven and earth. This is where it begins. Your eyes are the windows that open you to the magic, inviting the rest of your senses to come out and play. As the world you came from fades, you begin to hear the subtle beat of this place, the waves lapping at the shore, the wind caught by tall trees, the rat-a-tat-tat of a nearby woodpecker, the busy bustle of a chattering squirrel. The High Sierra sun infuses your cells, nudging away leftover tension, as a cool mountain breeze dances over the water to brush your cheek. You close your eyes and melt into this place, inhaling it in, absorbing that bewitching scent of pine laced with a hint of something you can’t quite name. And that feeling within—that life is good, indeed, and that anything—no, everything—is possible. This is what you came for. This is Lake Tahoe in the summer. Not so much a place, but a state of mind that settles into your soul and whispers you back.

The Nevada side of fun along the lake’s eastern shore and past some of its most spectacular homes – the highlight of the morning is entering Emerald Bay with its towering cliffs and rushing falls. As evening falls, head to the Zephyr Cove Lodge. We recommend saving room for one of their famous milkshakes – a locals favorite. Then burn off dessert by putting on your dancing shoes, grabbing a lucky penny and heading to MontBleu, South Shore’s newest hotspot for some evening dancing, romancing and gaming action.

The sun was overhead as our boat rounded the bend into Emerald Bay. Golden light bathed the much-photographed island. It was magic. Deep, deep blue water, a lace of bright sand, a stone castle peaking out from stately pines. Pure magic.

Step Back in Time Camp Richardson and Tallac Historic Site | Historic Camp Richardson Resort and Marina has been in operation for over 70 years. Families have been known to return getting in tune with its outdoor playground by renting a bike or taking your pick of hikes — from the flat, wheel chair accessible Tallac Historic Site walk through the lake’s fascinating past to the moderately challenging, highly picturesque Echo Lakes hike, to a straight-up-strenuous hike to the top of Mt. Tallac. Head back to Camp Richardson for some beach time and a burger at The Beacon. We might suggest you try a Beacon Rum Runner — a local favorite. Pick up a game of beach volleyball (or sip the Rum Runner and watch) before heading to your room for a late afternoon nap, Then off to Ski Run Boulevard for your dinner reservation at Café Fiore, an intimate seven-table restaurant known for high romance.

If you don’t have granite peaks, snow-laden evergreens and a stunning alpine lake in your backyard, we’re happy to share. To make certain you enjoy your stay, we offer miles of awe-inspiring runs for boarders and skiers of all levels, including terrain parks featuring gulps of big air. If you prefer staying closer to the ground, there’s also tubing, snow biking, snowmobiling, sledding and sleigh rides. And for those who simply enjoy breathing the pristine mountain air, the choices for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are as plentiful as our pine trees. If it can be done on the snow, you can bet we have everything you need plus scenery that will knock your woolly socks off. Winter fun doesn’t stop when the sun bows out in a blaze of color. As the moon and stars rise, the lights come up on the action that makes South Lake Tahoe a one-of-a-kind destination. We brew our own beer here, you know, and some of the world’s finest wines come from just over the hill. So relax, take in a show, or see if you can stretch the day’s luck across a night of gaming. And then nestle into bed for a long winter’s nap so that you can wake up ready for another awe-packed day.

in the flavors that await them. Because food never tastes better than after a romp in the snow, we have every kind of cuisine imaginable to satisfy your cravings and fill you up for more fun.

A Village of Play Stateline & Heavenly Village | Plan for enough days to spend one down slope, easing into the day with a cup of mountain-roasted coffee at the locals favorite, Alpen Sierra, before you wander down to Heavenly Village for a morning of serious shopping. Wile away the hours with a slow stroll along the heated cobblestone walks, wandering in and out of dozens of utterly tempting shops. All that shopping is sure to work up an appetite and with countless eateries in the village and nearby, you’re guaranteed to come away full and happy. After lunch, catch a matinee of that movie you’ve been dying to see or get your glide on at our outdoor ice rink and remember the simple joys of skating under a clear winter sky. Bright white and blue Heavenly, Kirkwood & Sierra-at-Tahoe | Choose your brand of fun when you travel to Tahoe’s South Shore this winter. Our three high-flying resorts offer epic days for cruising white velvet mountains or throwing down spins in world-class terrain parks. For the hands-down best view of the lake, catch the Gondola from the Heavenly Village. Your first landing is The Deck, worth a photo-op stop you’ll never forget and with easy access to the 10,040-foot mountaintop. Or hop back onto the gondola and cruise up to Adventure Peak, where you can catch the Tamarack Express to the new 3,100-foot Heavenly Flyer—the nation’s longest ZipRider, with a 525-foot vertical drop. trails, ski biking, tubing , sledding, or just a great place to kick it with a burger and beer. If you want to venture out a bit, check out Kirkwood, known for its savage snow and unbridled terrain. Powder hounds, take note of the K Factor: Kirkwood averages more than 600 inches of dry, light powder and consistently gets top marks for snow quality, terrain variety and challenge. Sierra-at-Tahoe is a must-ride destination for boarders with a craving for huge air by the big gulp in terrain parks and pipes that span the mountain. This locals’ favorite resort also features a low-flying Progression Park for those just earning their wings. Families will love the resort’s Mellow-Yellow speed-controlled zones and the Parent Predicament ticket that lets mom and dad take turns on the slopes.

As I turned to get my first full view of the lake, awe flooded through me. Yesterday’s snow storm left the air crackling clear and made the sky’s blue brighter and the lake’s blue even deeper than I remembered. Snow still clung to every bough, turning the mountain into an alpine wonderland…

Savor the snow and scenery Historic Western Shore | Along the western shores of South Lake Tahoe, Camp Richardson transforms from a summer hot spot to a land of winter wonder when the snowflakes fall. Your adventure begins at the Mountain Sports Center, where you can strap on your snowshoes or cross-country skis and head out across miles of groomed paths, beneath the giant pines. Take the trails into Tallac Historic Site and wander through Tahoe’s grand old summer estates. In the winter stillness, the once-busy playground of Tahoe’s wealthiest residents erases all sense of hurry. As you move through the snow along the beach trails, you half expect to see the Tod Goodwin steamer making its way to the old boathouse. If you time your trip just right, you can head out on a full moon snowmobile tour with any one of the snowmobile companies for a moonlight adventure to remember. If you’re an old fashioned romantic, let a horse-drawn sleigh be your transportation of choice.

Furthermore • Lake Tahoe is as long as the English Channel is wide (22 miles). • The Panama Canal, 700 feet wide and 50 feet deep, could be filled with Tahoe’s water even if it circled the globe at the equator – and there would still be enough water left over to fill a canal of the same size running from San Francisco to New York. • If the lake were tipped over, its contents would cover California in 14.5 inches of water, while Texas would be under 8.5 inches.

Getting Here Mark Twain wrote about his hike to Lake Tahoe over mountains that were thousands of miles high. Thankfully, while Twain’s “noble sheet of blue water… walled in by a rim of snow-clad mountain peaks” remains unchanged, getting to it is much, much easier.

C4 back cover Lake Tahoe is an amazing place. That’s one reason three million visitors a year choose it as a vacation and recreation destination. As is the case with many of our natural wonders, however, we run the risk of loving Lake Tahoe to death if we don’t treat it like the national treasure it is.

Do your part to help keep Tahoe’s forests healthy and waters clear. 1. Give Public Transportation a Try

6. Keep your Pet Reeled in

2. Be Careful with Fire

7. Be Watershed Aware

3. Don’t Feed the Bears

8. Learn about the Lake

4. Clean, Drain & Dry Your Boat

9. Recycle, Reuse, Conserve

5. Stay on Designated Trails

10. Get a Lake Tahoe License Plate
