than-life fantasies that keep you going when everything else around you seems so ho-hum. At Lake Tahoe, those dreams take on a completely new dimension because guess what, guys?—here, they’re real.

There’s no need to close your eyes and wish. Just open them wide and take a long, hard look at imagination in action. This is the place where the variety of terrain is limitless. We’ve got steeps, chutes, and bumps so intense you may forget to breathe. Corrugated runs where we just laugh at the concept of a speed limit. Fields with powder so deep you’ll feel as if your legs have turned to Jell-O®. Terrain parks and pipes with hits so outrageously huge you’ll rack up a ton of frequent-flier miles. Hear that intense thumping sound? Don’t worry—it’s just your heartbeat.

in addition to world-class skiing and riding, we offer dozens of activities that start with “snow” and end with pure adventure—like tubing, shoeing, biking, scooting, and mobiling. if you’re up for a real challenge, try the BOATercross event, where you slide down the slopes in a kayak. Lake Tahoe is also home to ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, hot-air ballooning, dogsledding, camel races, museums, art exhibits, and fabulous winter festivals. Clearly, boredom is not an option.

Lake Tahoe is one of the largest, deepest, and clearest lakes in the world.

And we’re committed to making sure it stays that way. Safeguarding the beauty and clarity of Lake Tahoe has long been a top priority. Area resorts and organizations are fiercely dedicated to reducing their carbon footprint and improving the region’s ecosystem. Focused on a pristine lake, healthy forests, and protected fish and wildlife, they hold fast to the vision of preserving these natural wonders while enhancing recreation and transportation.

Lake Tahoe’s Environmental improvement Program—a public-private partnership that rivals some of the largest collaborative restoration initiatives in the country—is leaps and bounds ahead of any other U.S. destination. To supplement its efforts, local businesses and the regional government have earmarked $1 billion for improvement projects to benefit the lake's ecosystem. The most recent accomplishments include:

improvement of more than 13,000 acres for wildlife habitat Restoration of more than 739 acres of wetlands Treatment of storm water runoff from 26 miles of state highways A 20 percent reduction in vehicle traffic near Stateline, Nevada, since 2001 as the result of transit-oriented redevelopment Replacement of 18 vehicles in the public transit fleet with clean-burning vehicles Limited new development, including the requirement that 1.5 old rooms must be removed for every new room constructed

We know the awesome beauty of Lake Tahoe is part of what draws you here, and nothing is more important to us than maintaining it. To that end, we continue to participate in SkiGreen™, a partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). A nonprofit organization, BEF provides access to renewable energy, expands the use of solar and wind energy, and develops additional energy sources. By selling Green Tags at our resorts, we encourage consumers to support the environmental efforts designed to save the planet.

Alpine Meadows enters its seventh year of commitment to using biodiesel fuel in its winter shuttle fleet for the 2010/11 season. At the mountain, a dedicated focus on waste reduction, energy conservation, and material reuse begun 15 years ago continues to expand, marked by the use of biodegradable dining utensils, eco-friendly lighting, an energy-efficient snowmaking system, and a comprehensive recycling program. The resort’s five-year partnership with Truckee-based Sierra Cost Management, which specializes in waste reduction and programs designed to maximize recycling, continues to yield more than 40 tons of cardboard, paper, beverage containers, used vegetable oil, batteries, fluorescent lights, computer equipment, and printer cartridges. These efforts and partnerships translate to preventing 35 million tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. Heavenly embraces its role as an environmental steward charged with protecting the qualities that make Lake Tahoe special. A leader among ski resorts, Heavenly employs a Master Plan to determine whether there is an overall trend of improvement in environmental conditions for forest, soil, air, and water resources. The use of an innovative watertreatment system provides the highest levels of effectiveness in a commercially available product, with the objective of meeting nearly the same water-quality standards as safe drinking water. As the founding member of the Coordinated Transit System, Heavenly transports more than 450,000 passengers on low-emission shuttles every season, saving nearly 1.6 million vehicle miles of travel. The resort has also taken a leadership role in recycling and conservation. in 2008, Vail Resorts initiated an energy-use-reduction program called Target 10%, whose goal is to achieve a 10 percent reduction in overall energy use across the company by 2010. As of August 2009, companywide energy reduction of electricity, gasoline, diesel, propane, and natural gas stood at 6.1 percent. Heavenly replaced older, less-efficient snow guns with high-efficiency fan and “stick” guns, which are estimated to save more than 1.7 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. At Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, a dedication to sustaining and strengthening the region’s precious natural resources is evident. The Winters Creek Lodge will see the addition of three windspires, designed to offset the facility’s energy usage by up to 30 percent. The resort’s environmental efforts also include recycling and waste-reduction programs; the development of best-management practices for construction sites, incorporating input from local regulatory agencies;

the improvement of water quality through erosion and sediment controls; the implementation of energy- and water-efficient design, both on the hill and in the lodges; protection of natural wetlands and restoration of native vegetation; and the establishment of transportation initiatives that reduce air pollution by providing viable alternatives to the use of individual vehicles. Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort™ was the first California ski area to partner with BEF to purchase Green Tags in support of wind energy, offsetting approximately 215,600 pounds of global-warming emissions associated with its electrical energy use. in keeping with this effort, the Northstar Environmental Action Team (NEAT), a volunteer employee group, continues to work with resort leadership to identify and implement programs that further the resort’s environmental and sustainable efforts. in conjunction with East West Partners and Sierra Watch, Northstar developed a comprehensive Habitat Management Plan for its entire 8,000 acres to recommend specific treatments for enhanced forest/habitat health. The resort also has expanded recycling efforts, and continues to make improvements to erosion control and water quality. Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort has been awarded a Silver Eagle for Environmental Education— one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a winter resort—by the National Ski Areas Association for its 2009 initiatives. These include a bottle cap recycling program in partnership with local elementary schools; keep Sierra Clean day, which annually removes more than 2,000 pounds of trash from the mountain; and Environmental Awakening, a video segment produced by ian Ruhter for the inaugural TransWorld Team Shoot Out. Last season, Sierra Resort purchased close to 37,000 gallons of biodiesel, and has closed the loop by sending its used vegetable oil back to the biodiesel company for production. Eco-friendly cleaning and disposable products are used throughout the resort, and facility upgrades are green wherever possible. Sierra Resort was the first commercial property on South Shore to initiate the Blue Bag recycling program, and is currently exploring the viability of a composting program for the new season. The use of hybrid vehicles is encouraged with the offer of free Preferred Parking for anyone who drives one to the resort. Employees have exhibited their support of environmental initiatives by adopting a “right here, right now” philosophy that has led to the creation of Project: Green Sierra.

Squaw Valley USA is committed to a multimillion-dollar environmental improvement program, which has instituted extensive revegetation and erosion-control projects to ensure the health and quality of native and naturalized plant populations and wetland areas. The resort has also developed a comprehensive recycling program, and has made revolutionary innovations in energy use to guarantee minimal depletion of natural resources and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Olympic ice Pavilion utilizes the most technologically advanced refrigeration system of its kind: a heat exchanger that freezes the ice in the skating rink while simultaneously heating the Swimming Lagoon and Spa, surrounding decks and walkways, and the interior of the High Camp mountaintop facility. Power factor correction and harmonic filter units have been added to all the big lifts to ensure that only the energy necessary to run the lifts is used. Squaw Valley’s extensive upgrades have resulted in vast energy savings, as well as a safer and cleaner environment for resort guests. Squaw Valley’s environmental efforts have been recognized by several third-party organizations. in 2009, the Ski Area Citizens Coalition ranked Squaw Valley as the most environmentally friendly resort in the country. Kirkwood continues its funding project with the National Forest Foundation (NFF)—the congressionally chartered nonprofit partner of the U.S. Forest Service—after having assisted in the delivery of a grant in 2009 to build and maintain trails in the Eldorado National Forest. Rates for every lodging unit at the resort include a $1.00 donation to the NFF, and the monies generated will be applied to funding future projects within the Eldorado National Forest. When guests purchase daily lift tickets or season passes, they are given the opportunity to buy Ski Green Tags, which fund research in sustainable energy sources. Ongoing energy-efficient retrofits and recent conservation initiatives continue to reduce the resort’s overall energy consumption, while improved recycling efforts have diverted more than 67 percent of the overall waste stream by volume. With an eye on reducing pollution, traffic, and gas consumption, kirkwood maintains a successful online carpool forum in partnership with Snowbomb.com to increase ridesharing to the resort—an effort that was responsible for taking more than 1,000 cars off the road. A unique variation on the traditional blog, this version provides an online social network where people can connect with other skiers and boarders who plan to visit the resort.

When we say “something for everyone,” we’re not kidding.

Whether you’re in the mood for fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants challenges or fun-for-the-whole-family adventures, the seven Ski Lake Tahoe resorts deliver. Spend the morning jumping off cornices and screaming down skinny chutes that’ll put your heart in your throat and your belly in Toledo. Start the afternoon bumping down a lunar landscape of a mogul field, switch to navigating through snow-covered trees, and end your day floating nose-deep in a forested powder stash. Fly through the air with the greatest of ease in a terrain park, or take a skiing or riding lesson that will dazzle you and impress your friends as your abilities soar to new heights. Enjoy a family cruise down an impeccably groomed bowl, or enroll the kids in ski school and sneak off for an off-piste picnic in the backcountry.

Alpine Meadows internationally recognized for its incredibly diverse terrain, Alpine Meadows offers everything from beginner and intermediate groomers with sweeping views of Lake Tahoe to backcountry-accessed skiing and boarding for the most zealous of adventurers. The resort also offers daily guided tours via the Alpine Guides program. Guests simply reserve a full- or half-day Alpine Guides session, which is customized to individual ability level and terrain interests. Renowned within the Tahoe Basin for its deep snowfall, Alpine Meadows regularly extends its season into late May.

Heavenly Overlooking the sapphire-blue waters of Lake Tahoe, Heavenly is a truly unique snowsports destination. Skiing and snowboarding options span the states of California and Nevada, offering 34 miles of groomed cruisers, 1,600-foot plunges in double-black-diamond canyons, some of the most outrageous tree skiing in North America, multiple progressive terrain parks, and a super tubing hill—accessed by a 565-foot-long elevated magic carpet. Appealing to all ages, Heavenly also features sledding, ski biking, ice skating, sleigh rides, shopping, spas, movie theaters, and bowling alleys. New for 2010-11, Heavenly will debut a state-ofthe-art 14,980-square-foot on-mountain day lodge at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. Accessible to both skiers and sightseers, the lodge will include a massive high-quality food court, a small bar, restrooms, approximately 500 indoor seats, and a 4,320-foot sun-drenched outdoor patio. The new lodge represents a fantastic upgrade to Heavenly’s on-mountain dining experience.

in December of 2009, the airport remodeled the ticket lobby and completed its two-year, $60-million Airport Baggage Check-in project, which enhances security screening and simplifies the check-in process. The new 1.3-mile baggage conveyor system can move items from the check-in desk to the belly of an airplane in 15 minutes or less. This year, 17 new or seasonal flights were added to the schedule, including nonstop service to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle.

Go to SkiLakeTahoe.com for information on rental cars, bus and train schedules, shuttles, tours and airport services, local buses and road conditions.

Once you land at Reno-Tahoe international, you can be in the midst of all the mountain excitement in about an hour or less. You’ll find just about every type of ground transportation—rental cars, taxis, limos, buses, and ski resort shuttles—to carry you quickly and comfortably to your lodging destination. The North Lake Tahoe Express daily airport shuttle, which runs from 3:30 a.m. until midnight, provides service to and from North Lake Tahoe and the Reno-Tahoe international Airport. Per-person fees are $40 one way and $75 round trip, with discounts available for two or more. Reservations are required and can be made four hours in advance. South Tahoe Express provides shuttle service between Reno-Tahoe international Airport and South Lake Tahoe resorts with eight daily departures. Per-person fees are $26 one way and $46.50 round trip. Rose-Ski Tahoe, Northstar-at-Tahoe™, Squaw Valley USA, and Sugar Bowl. Add annual averages of more than 40 feet of snow and 300 days of sunny skies and the plot thickens. And the Ski Tahoe North interchangeable Lift Ticket allows you to sample seven different resorts. Sprinkled between lake and mountain are resort towns bustling with shopping, dining, ice rinks, cross country trails and an après-ski scene of snug pubs, big name concerts in big name resorts, and the ever-present attractions of dice, cards and casino tables. By all-season highway, North Lake Tahoe is just 45 minutes from Reno, a couple hours from Sacramento. if you’re flying, simpler yet. Reno-Tahoe international Airport’s online interactive map of searchable flights helps you schedule your trip.
