PREFACE
สวัสดีครับ Greetings, Give thanks to Allah SWT, who made me able to finish my journey which is far away from home and I’m very grateful for this awesome opportunity so I could finish it until this report was created, therefore readers could read and enjoy my study journey and experiences that I learnt in ‘Land of the free’. A Lot of things I went through from the beginning until the end, creating an unpleasant zone into a pleasurably zone. This report is telling reader about everything that I gained during an exchange programme in King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) and Thailand itself, either inside or outside academic activity. I tried my best to describe it through this report so readers can feel and learn from different perspective from me. I hope this report will give a lot of benefits to anyone who read this report intentionally or not. Despite from that, I hope It’ll made readers to have at least a little bit of desire to experience the same thing as me. Regards, Tahta Syajar Assaffah 2

INTRODUCTION King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi
King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) can trace its origin to the Thonburi Technology Institute (TTI) which was established on February 4, 1960 by the Department of Vocational Education in the Ministry of Education. TTI had as its objective the training of technicians, technical instructors and technologists. The Technology Act of April 24, 1971 combined three technical institutes under the Department of Vocational Education, namely Thonburi Technical Institute (TTI). North Bangkok Technical Institute and Nonthaburi Telecommunication Institute, to form a single degree-granting institution called King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology (KMIT) with three campuses. In 1974, oversight of KMIT was trasferred from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of University Affairs. A new law enacted on February 19, 1986 made the three campuses of KMIT into three autonomous universities. KMIT Thonburi Campus became King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi (KMITT). On March 7,1988 it was announced in the Royal Gazette that KMITT became King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). KMUTT was the first public university in Thailand to recieve full autonomy. Its current administrative system is patterned after international government owned universities. The new act gives KMUTT total control over its budget, allows it to own and manage property, and grants KMUTT authority to set up new faculties, departments, and academic programs. As a top technological university, KMUTT has a mandate to nurture leading scientists and technologists capable of performing R&D for the broad purpose of improving human standards of living. 6

School of Architecture and Design (SoA+D)
KMUTT’s School of Architecture and Design was established in 1994 to provide a complete of study in English. The integrated and interdependent study program supports the concepts of art and humanity and science as discovery. Together these concepts lead to the use and development of appropriate technologies that meet the challenges of a dynamic 21st century global society. The program is designed to meet the needs of Thailand’s changing society. Graduates are also prepared to study and wok internationally. All degree courses are based on the integration and interdependence of art, science and technology. The School of Architecture and Design aims to promote research and the development of applied technologies in art and design disciplines. It also focuses on rendering design, consultation, advisory management and training services to government departments and related private sectors. At present, the School of Architecture and Design offers bachelor and master’s degree programs in five areas : · Architecture · Interior Architecture · Communication Design 7
· Industrial Design · Design and Planning
Michael Paripol Tangtrongchit Dean of School of Architecture and Design, KMUTT
Our School of Architecture and Design (SoA+D) at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) is under an important transformation stage in many aspects. Despite the fact that system of architectural and design education is fusing itself into a broader range of study fields because of its strength in projectbased learning platform, its holistic approach and its focus on creativity which apparently a strong foundation for innovation the modern world is currently looking for. We can deal with almost anything in the real world using architectural and design thinking. But when we come back to see how architecture and design will be practiced in this rapidly changing world, a lot of things need to be modernized to cope with new economic norm, new technology, depleting resources, accumulating environmental problems, and lifestyle of the new workforce, population, etc. The question of what the skills for 21st century would be needs to be answered. Our School has a strong belief in outcome-based education. We are trying very hard to engage students, lecturers and staff together with our alliances in faith that our goals will be successfully reached. Dean Vision of SOA+D 8

During a research on the site of Bahn BoWee, I found out that the solidarity between each other is slacken. The community is a bit quite since the villager is not supporting by their attendance and keep silence. Therefore they’re struggling by themselves to work part time for a family livings. By the insight that I learned they also got some trouble by food expense even though the nature and neighbourhood give them freely. The resources is not enough to live the whole family life without aftercare by planting back. Therefore this aquaponic design was purposed as a new resources and create responsibilities, caring, social activities between each other.

It marks the end of the harvest of one rice crop and the beginning of the next rice crop. Karen New Year is the largest celebration in the Karen community and is celebrated nationally throughout Burma.

A Studio Workshop Collaboration held by :
# 04 อำเภอ แม่แจ่ม Mae Chaem Chiang Mai 77
Distance Design Workshop “The distance could be an obstacle. It could keep us from the access of life facilities ; a good healthcare, an advance education, a big marketplace, a cultural centre or a variety of entertainment. Or the distance could be an opportunity. It could give us a space for the observation, for the reflection on things, on people and on ourselves. (S. Na Soonthorn, ENSCI, project originator)
78
Distance Design Workshop Maejaem(แม่แจ่ม), the distant small town of Chiangmai was the study site where this 3-universities-2-weeks DISTANCE design workshop took place. 5 small multi-cultural teams consisting of French, Indonesian, German, Taiwanese and Thai students from ENSCI - Les Ateliers, Faculty of Fine Arts Chiang Mai University and SoA+D, KKMUTT have explored people and places to see and learn how this distance affects their lives, our lives and work with the locals on how we could reduce disadvantages and enhance advantages of living at a distance.
79
Distance Design Workshop Issues that have been raised to awareness during the workshop appeared to relate to current community transforming conditions: tendency towards cultural and creative tourism, disappearing vernacular and crafts wisdoms, wider gaps between the elderly and youth, rising awareness for one’s own cultural root and invasion of contract farming system. Besides, the roles of designers while pursuing community development goal were immensely discussed.
80
Distance Design Workshop Workshop outputs have been executed into 5 socially and culturally concerned design proposals: (1) water-related set of objects inviting people to playfully interact with (2) animal/insect traps for urbanised context (3) activity program to re-connect young people and seniors through crafts learning (4) natural-colour-dyed cultural objects made from corn starch and corn peels (5) Teenjok-textile-inspired work, made out of bamboo stripes interwoven with natural yarns
81
Distance Design Workshop The DISTANCE design workshop was between 16-28 September 2018 and the workshop outcomes were exhibited for Chiangmai Design Week during 8-16 December 2018
82

The Cow Market Originally called farmer market. This buffalo market is the biggest market in Chiang Mai. Apart from its original farmer’s buffalo/cow and fighting chicken stocks, they are also have all kind of varieties in food/clothings/crafting etc selling here. The price tags are cheap as well.
86
# 07 ถนนคนเดินท่าแพ Tha Pae Walking Street Chiang Mai 87
Chiang Mai Sunday Market The Sunday ‘walking street’ market is a fun shopping outdoor activity. There are so many crafts and artisan stuff which has their uniqueness of Thailand. It even looks more aesthetic and authentic than Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok. It’s the most crowded market I ever been visited, full with tourist around the world but most of them are french and germany.
88
# 08 บ้าน 100 อัน 1000 อย่าง Ban Roi an Pan Yang Chiang Mai 89
Lanna Woodcarving Art Museum In thailand, this place is called Ban Roi An Pan Yang, means 100 houses 1000 pieces of woodcraft. It’s the most fascinating museum I ever been with full of very old large teak wood (one piece with no join, no glue, carved to enchanted water/fire/termite damages of old wood - which makes the works really unique) and surprisingly this place is a living house that belongs to Aj. Ahn’s father (An ENSCi teacher who coordinate the DISTANCE workshop).
90
# 09 ศูนย์สร้างสรรค์งานออกแบบ Thailand Creative & Design Center Chiangmai 91
TCDC Library Continuing to expand opportunities for learning about design, TCDC reaches out to entrepreneurs, designers, students, people in Chiang Mai and the upper north and offering them the knowledge and tools to turn original, innovative ideas into real economic returns. 99
Chiang Mai Design Week This year, the theme is “Keep Refining. The philosophy behind the theme is indeed the fervent belief that apart from enhancing our quality of life and presenting innovations, keeping refining and developing manufacturing process and techniques in the creative industries are just as crucial. Together, these elements contribute to taking design works to the next level: sharp, refined, up-to-date and corresponding to needs in our daily lives, as well as paving the way for the future.

CLOSING Conclusion At this moment, I was the first Exchange Student who held the programme between Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember and King Mongkut’s University of Tehnology Thonburi in Industrial Design Department. As a first delegation, there are many benefits that I gained from this program, from preparation to completion. They are : · Trained on a real project-based with external partners; · Able to communicate design project to the client; · Adapted to be able to fuse with the local’s culture and behaviors; · Able to communicate internationally between local people and other nations; · Gained new perspective on design, craft, artisan, and culture; · Learned the use of a product through culture and religion between the locals; · Establish good relationship among students, lecturers, and the locals; · Establish good cooperation between the institution and the country;
Recommendation After having this Student Exchange Programme : which organized as a form of cooperation between Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi SoA+D, I’d like to recommend several things to the reader and hope the future Exchange Student would be prepared even better : For preparation, it is necessary to obtain more information regarding on living cost, livinghood, etc from people who already have gone to the destination country especially from PPI (Pelajar Perhimpunan Indonesia) of destination country. Request assistance especially on accommodation to the International Office from both home and host University in case the University doesn’t provide it. I recommend to create Thai bank account in Indonesia before leaving such as CIMB, UOB, etc. since It’s pretty much draining on a charge of a single withdrawal from Thai ATM if you used Indonesian ATM Cards. Since the program doesn’t cover on livingcost, I think it’s not a big problem to deal with it. If I compared to Jakarta livingcost it’s just slightly the same. But still, I hope in the future the University can provide the future Student Exchange livingcost. 108
This report is an overview of a student exchange program, the purpose of this report is to give the reader of the student’s activity, learning process and the results of it.
