Master Thesis Releasing the Unconsciousness The thesis explores the lost identity of subway stations as strategic nodes that construct the city image of New York City. The foundation of this thesis is built on Kevin Lynch’s study of cities as images and Sigmund Freud’s consciousness theory that helps to explain how human mind constructs and storages images and memories, as the experience of a city being parts of them.

VIEW & HEIGHT STUDY

View & Height Study I Through Lynch’s argument of nodes as “the strategic foci into which the observer can enter”1, the subway station is a concentration of “doors” towards decisions. To reveal the possibilities in city, my proposal is to collect the identities of the neighborhood and layer them up on Manhattan’s aboveground. Vision plays a very critical role as human mind receiving information and then collage the images and memories of the city. 1.Kevin Lynch, The Image of the City, (Cambridge: MIT Press 1960). P72

View & Height Study II Representing the underground system, the entrance can definitely offer more than just a hole leads to the darkness, or say the city’s unconsciousness. By studying the height and views towards the city and its neighborhoods, it brings what the city offers to the table for decision making and experience.

While today’s Washington Square carries a different atmosphere and the diversities of human interactions, the history has not entirely been eliminated from the physical world. Like the subway system is underground and it is the unconsciousness of the city, the history of Washington Square has been buried underground in this neighborhood, as it is in the people’s memory.
