HMER has exhibited a full series of machines equipped with its very own linear motors. The company’s linear motors are created using CHMER’s advanced R&D technology. The machines include wire cut EDM, die sinker EDM, drilling EDM, and other types of machines. Linear motor consist of a noncontacting forcer and "flat" rare-earth magnet track. This design eliminates backlash, windup, wear, and maintenance issues associated with ball screw, belt, and rack and pinion based motion control and positioning systems. Mr Brad Wang, Marketing Director of CHMER said that MTduo is like a special sequel of TIMTOS, therefore the company kept the spirit and presented many new developments this time. He added that this exhibition is a very good exposure for CHMER and its products. With all the industrial buyers and experts attending the show, the company continually participates in both TIMTOS and MTduo. Before the end of the year, CHMER disclosed plans to release new products. Concerning marketing, the company expressed its willingness to go out of Taiwan and participate in international trade fairs, and cooperate with TAITRA in speci¿c projects, since the organization is a great help in promoting Taiwanese business around the globe. In terms of exports, CHMER recognized mainland China as the main focus, about 60% of the company’s export activities go to this market. Moreover, CHMER also pays attention on the ASEAN market including Indonesia and Thailand. Aside from that, East European nations such as Russia, Poland and Czech Republic are also important to CHMER as the recovery of EU Zone brings its signi¿cant effect.

O

NE of the most important conferences held during MTduo perfectly illustrates the event motto, “Taiwan machine tools shaping the world”. At the Taiwan Machine Tools Future Innovation conference held on May 8, the focus was on enhancing the competitiveness of the industry. This initiative also has support of the Taiwanese government. This year, in order to reinforce the global marketing capability of Taiwan machine tools, the Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs launched the “Integrated Marketing Communications Project for the Taiwan Machine Tools Industry”. The primary purpose of this project is to boost the image of the industry as a leading international supplier in the machine tools, equipment, and accessory segments. The image-building component and the corresponding competitiveness strengthening plan apply to both market analysis and research and also pursue integrated marketing activities. With these efforts, the BOFT expects that Taiwan can further strengthen its position as a leading supplier of high-

Shaping the world quality machine tools and hence be improved in many aspects globally. Taiwan Machine Tools Overview T h e Ta i w a n e s e m a c h i n e t o o l industry has been fostered for more than 60 years and marked by continual progress. Ranked as one of the world’s best-known sources of machine tools, the Taiwan machine tool sector is in the global Top 5 in terms of output value and export value. According to of¿cial statistics, Taiwan had total machine tool exports in 2013 of more than USD 3.5 billion of which metal cutting tools accounted for USD 2.8 billion and metal forming tools accounting for the remainder. Machining centers dominated with an export value of USD 1.1 billion followed by lathes at USD 769 million. As for metal forming machine tools the share of pressing and stamping tools fell by 3.4%, while demand for other forming tools grew for about 10%. Exports of Taiwanese machine tool components

in the same period meanwhile exceeded USD one billion. The Top 10 importers of Taiwanese machine tools were Mainland China, the United States, Thailand, Turkey, Germany, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Russia, and the Netherlands. Shipments to Mainland China in 2013 were worth for USD 1.1 billion, which accounted for 34% of exports by market. Exports to USA, the secondranked market, accounted for 11.3%, and Thailand, the third, for 6.4%. These numbers reÀect the strength of the industry, and Taiwan machine tool manufacturers are rightly proud of their openness to innovation and the flexibility of their production systems compared to their competitors around the world. Another edge for the industry is the close integration of the upstream and downstream supply chains, which enables manufacturers to supply products and meet customers’ needs in the shortest turnaround time with the best possible outcomes. Market Outlook In 2014, analysts expect a 1520% growth and the optimistic forecast is that there is a good opportunity for Taiwan to take the fourth place in the world rankings of machine tool manufacturing regions. Moreover, there is every reason to believe that Taiwan will maintain its place as the third-ranked global supplier for precision machine tool components, a position it has held since 2010, supplying semiconductor equipment and biomedical industries worldwide. Driven by growth in these correlated industries, parts and component producers are likely to have substantial momentum in this year, with growth rates forecast to rise beyond 20%. In looking forward to the future, therefore, the prospects of the Taiwanese machine tools and component industries are even more positive since the world economy is recovering. Taiwan will likely play an even more signi¿cant role in the global market with more of its competitively priced and innovative tools shaping the world.

For buyers to have an easier access to suppliers and their products, the show was divided into six zones: (1) Automation, Intelligent Control, Components, Mold And Die, Tools and Cutters Zone; (2) CAD/CAM Software and Hardware, Design Engineer, Control System, Inspection & Measurement, and 3D Printing Technology Zone (New); (3) Machinery and Manufacturing Technology Zone; (4) Sheet-Metal Processing and Metal Forming Machine Zone; (5) Swiss Pavilion; and (6) German Pavilion. The presence of the Swiss and German pavilions clearly showed that MTduo is not just a local exhibition but rather global. Regarding the Interwood, there were four exhibition zones featuring

advanced woodworking machines and manufacturing technologies: (1) Wo o d w o r k i n g m a c h i n e a n d w o o d furniture manufacturing equipment (2) Woodworking and furniture materials and accessories (3) Plastic furniture and building material manufacturing equipment (4) Metal furniture and building material manufacturing equipment. The four zones drew attention from international buyers who came. During the one-on-one business meeting, customers from the wood and steel industries expressed their positive observations about the show. Ministry of Economic Affairs and TAITRA invited international buyers from 51 countries to attend the exhibition. Chairman Hsu of Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry reported that in the first quarter of 2014 the market for machineries grew 9.1%, while machine tool sector went up by 4.6%. Chairman Hsu said that in spite of all the dif¿culties encountered, the government is constructing more infrastructures for trade fair business and people can expect the machinery industry to be fully supported in a larger scale. Furthermore, Vice President Wu Den-yih also visited the show and gave a short speech. This signifies the government’s support in MTduo. Wu stated that machinery is considered very important to Taiwan and the government is focusing in helping both high-tech and traditional industries regardless of the size of the enterprises. He emphasized, “As an island, Taiwan must focus its strength on the export power, helping the local economy.”

The use of monetary instrument to expand business

O

ne of the five conferences organized during the show was “How to increase export via monetary instrument.” The seminar focused around Taiwanese corporations and business people, and how to help develop their expanding project through monetary instrument. The keynote speakers were from The Export-Import Bank of the ROC. They talked about the way the bank assists those companies who are investing or planning to capitalize in areas where the basic monetary system or the national situation is unstable. One common but risky transaction is open account. This transaction usually creates concern for all exporters especially when goods are delivered but are not immediately paid. The Export-Import Bank of ROC can help by providing insurance to compensate a certain portion of the loss. In this way, suppliers can be more confident in entering the world market. Another issue for exporters is capital. The Export-Import Bank of the ROC provides financing services to Taiwan exporters to support their operation. As a government-founded bank in Taiwan, the speakers emphasized that The Export-Import Bank of the ROC is not for profit, but rather, its goal is to encourage Taiwanese corporations to invest around the world.
