Award-winning annual Fringe showcase returns to Edinburgh, August 3 to 28, 2022

Launched in 2014, Taiwan Season has maintained its status as an increasingly !hot tip" at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe because of the highquality dance, theatre and live performance it showcases. In more recent, Covid-era times it also garnered attention for its enterprising – and awardwinning – online presence.

Taiwan Season Performances 2022

Presented under the umbrella title A Glimpse of Taiwan, this year’s roster of carefully-chosen productions runs a gamut from full-on contemporary dance (See You) and thoughtfully stylised dance-theatre (The Whisper of the Waves) to cross-art form experimentation (TOMATO) and circus-style, multi-media spectacle (Light of Life). The four shows can be seen at Taiwan Season’s valued partner venues Summerhall or Dance Base or, in a welcome new partnership, Assembly. Details below.

Alongside these performances, Taiwan Season Symposium: Connecting with Taiwan is proud to offer three 90-minute discussions focused, respectively, on performance and technology; opportunities for female artists; and practical approaches to creativity and climate change. The first two sessions will occur both in- person (at Dance Base) and online on August 15, while the final session is an in-person event (presented in collaboration with the Danish Arts Foundation showcase #Danish at Fringe Central) on August 16. Again, more details below. Central Box Office 0131 226

Gifted young choreographer LAI HungChung's dynamic ensemble dance is a feast of intense motion and sensations inspired by ideas about loss, longing, confrontation and evasion. Watching the dancers'expressive bodies is akin to reading their minds.

The goddess of the sea invites you to a dazzling circus spectacle loaded with vivid sights and atmospheric sounds.

Diabolo Dance Theatre’ s unique show is a multi-media fantasy revolving around the diabolo – a spinning toy central to Taiwanese culture. If disaster were to strike, what would you do and who could you turn to? Shinehouse Theatre's deft, fluidly stylised production is a beautiful balancing act of text and movement, social issues and sheer theatrical poetry.

Devised for three dancers, not to mention some ripe and shapely red fruit, TOMATO is a cultural experience both playful and provocative. Lust and desire are centrestage in a canny, capricious combination of live performance and live-camera documentation from the gifted young dancer-choreographer CHOU Kuan Jou. This enticingly tasty work is an absurdly funny expression of Chou’s ongoing interest in gender issues from a feminist perspective. Here private manifestations of sexuality receive a ribticklingly public spin. Ideal fare, then, for anyone curious about seriously tongue-in cheek, cross-art form exploration. CHOU Kuan Jou is a rising choreographer based in Taiwan. She also works as a theatre performer, artist and dance instructor. Inspired by bodies and behaviour in daily life, her recent work has focused on gender issues and feminism

The goddess of the sea invites you to a dazzling circus spectacle celebrating the vitality of the Taiwanese as an imaginative oceanic people. Loaded with vivid sights and atmospheric sounds, Diabolo Dance Theatre’s unique show is a multi-media fantasy revolving around the diabolo – a spinning toy central to Taiwanese culture. Feats of grace and daring punctuate a narrative that plays powerfully with the four elements.

Full of seductively swirling colours and a constant flow of motion, and set to a cinematic yet soulful soundtrack featuring live indigenous vocals, this is all-ages entertainment for the ages.

A lonely taxi driver shares a close bond with a sensitive potted plant. A loving same-sex couple are conflicted about surrogate parenting. Spirit mediums speak for these characters, voicing their innermost thoughts and feelings. The result is an affecting, ingenious consideration of both nature, human nature and our need for emotional rescue.

LAI Hung-Chung is one of Taiwan’s most sophisticated young choreographers. This scintillating production for his company Hung Dance justifies the acclaim. It is a non-stop feast of intensely expressive motion and sensations inspired by ideas about loss, longing, confrontation and evasion. Watching the dancers" bodies is akin to reading their minds. The difficulty these resolutely modern people have in connecting may be their strongest connection. The net effect is both feverishly intimate yet coolly detached, qualities enhanced by handsomely sculpted lighting and the textured pulsations of a rhythmically varied score.

Founded in 2017, Hung Dance’s name is derived from the Chinese character that means ‘to fly.’ Integrating elements of tai chi into contemporary thinking, LAI Hung-Chung's work expresses internal emotions through external physical states. He is also influenced by the subtle relationship between people and nature. The company has toured Asia and Europe, and is interested in developing further cultural exchanges via its International Collaboration Project.
