FASHION Q’S & A’S BY STYLE BY NARE Q.WHY FASHION DESIGNING AND WHAT ARE THE PERKS OF IT?

A. I am all about how I feel in that moment that’s why I chose fashion

designing as a career, but I have a strong belief that formality will always take the first step in every work environment, it doesn’t really have to the time but wear in a manner that you still gain respect and feel comfortable too.

Q. WHATS YOUR ADVICE FRO FOLLOW TRENDS

A. I don’t usually follow trends I believe in making something to last, as

a fashion designer too my, my clients, happy either in trends or whatever they want, we are on a print season were ever brans tries to bring up their own prints to stand out but we end up doing the same thing so my advice when it comes to trends is, do not follow trends but make your lifetime trends.

Q. WHAT ARE THE FASHION DO’S AND DONTS FOR AN OFFICE SPACE?

FUN FASHION FACT. • “The modern industry that was based around firms and fashion houses began in the 19th century with Charles Fredrick Worth who was the first fashion designer to have his label sewn into garments that he had created”. And this was the birth of fashion.

A . formal slick and clean always works never ever do you see through in an of-

fice space, belt, formal, shoes, short hair for guys a clean plain shirt always win.

BE CAREFUL, MOSQ

Do you often feel itchy when you wake up or while asleep? We may all know that the culprits here are mosquitoes. But these are not to be taken lightly as mosquitoes are one of the deadliest insects on earth. They are agents of spreading malaria, yellow fever, Zika virus which has an effect on pregnant women, putting their unborn babies at risk. Half of the world’s population live in areas that are exposed to these kind of conditions where malaria spread by mosquitoes is common and deadly. Even though it is said that people living in those areas can grow immune to the virus, and not leading to death, this statistic is alerting and health organisations have been in distress. Sub-Saharan Africa carries a rather higher share of the global malaria burden, spanning at 88% of 90% cases reported globally. According to the report on World Health Organisation (WHO). There are simple ways to avoid mosquitoe bites rather than running a risk of being infected and getting healed, you run a risk of losing your life. Vaccinations are available to sustain you for a life time. They will make you immune to these diseases for an epoch of time. Studies show that tourists and people who are always on the road are more vulnerable to being infected by mosquitoe-borne diseases. There is however injections that travellers take before leaving their country to a country that has experienced an outbreaks in these diseases. Get vaccinated, it is your right. You can also make use of nets around your bed when you are asleep. Also make use of window screens, open your curtains but keep your windows closed as much as possible. Malaria and yellow fever

12

are the common diseases in South Africa while Zika is mostly found overseas like Latin America, Asia and so on. This doesn’t mean it is not in Africa at all, it is just rare.

Malaria

Malaria is the most common mosquito-borne disease all around the world. With death tolls ranking very high in insect deaths. According to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the female Anopheles transmits malaria parasites; P.falciparum is the most prevalent parasite in Africa and is responsible for most malaria deaths globally. The female anopheles mosquitoe is an efficient vector that likes tropical, rural, and urban conditions. Anopheles that carry P.vivax are found mostly outside Africa.” These mosquitoes bite mostly at night; the common victims of these bites are pregnant women and children. This is especially for those living in places where these mosquitoes are mostly found, in places with humid temperatures.

SYMPTOMS According to WHO, in some people, symptoms may appear after 7 days of the bite or even more. The symptoms are headaches, fever, chills and vomiting. An infection of this disease may prove fatal if not treated early.

QUITOES ARE FATAL With these kinds of symptoms, it’s almost hard to recognise that you have been infected with malaria. So if you suspect any of these kinds. Better get yourself checked before the disease gets severe. Infants and children under the age of 5 are at high risk including pregnant women. People with HIV/AIDS as well as tourists or people who are always travelling are also extremely vulnerable to this disease. There are however ways to prevent malaria, there are antimalarial medicine that will help in just doing that. Travellers can also prevent contacting it in places that they wish to visit. This is through chemoprophylaxis. It is however said for those people living in places that are high in malaria break, that they have grown partially immunity to prevent it from getting severe – talk about the survival of the fittest. A human body has properties to adapt to situations, environment and evidently diseases and viruses.

Yellow Fever Unlike the female anopheles that bites in the night, the ‘female’ Aedes bites during the day. Transmitting a parasite that gets you Yellow Fever. The cycle however starts from monkeys to humans. The mosquitoe firstly bites monkeys and then the disease to humans and then from human to human. Research shows that it is found in Africa, Latin America, jungles and other places with humid temperatures. In their reports, “In May 2016 a WHO Emergency Committee called for intensified national action and international

support for yellow fever outbreaks in Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

SYMPTOMS

Yellow fever carries with it a rather harsh list of symptoms which include, fever, muscle pains, backache, headache, shivers, and loss of appetite, nausea or even vomiting. There is also according to WHO, a second stage which gets even intense, fortunately only a small amount of people enter this second stage. They may experience high fever, jaundice and abdominal pain with vomiting. These symptoms can cause your kidneys to fail; you may find blood in your vomit and also on your faeces. People who enter this stage are likely to die, and people who recover from it can come out without any significant organ damages. It can be hard according to research, to diagnose yellow fever as it may be confused with severe malaria, West Nile virus and Zika – as well as poisoning. There are however ways to prevent this disease. Vaccination is available for humans. As single vaccination can make you immune to yellow fever for the rest of your life. However, One fifth of a regular dose may be used in emergencies and is found viable to sustain you for only 12 months. Be sure also avoid mosquitoe bites by covering yourself or your loved ones with a net, use window screens and also wear clothes that cover your exposed skin when you are in places with yellow fever outbreaks. TRAVELING IN THE OFF THE BENEFITS OF TRAVELING IN JANUARY / FEBRUARY

The benefits of traveling in January also known as the off pick season are countless Ingrid Monakgomo Sebeke from Xodus Travel (PTY) Ltd explains these benefits.

14

F PICK SEASON Traveling just like any profession has its own terminologies, like the term off-pick and high-pick season. Off-pick season is mostly referred to the months whereby less people are willing or able to travel, and high-pick season are the months whereby a great number of people are willing to travel. Because a lot of people prefer to travel in the festive season which can also be referred to as the high-pick season, prices for traveling around that time increases, due to the high demand in travel. But reduce in January which is also referred to as the off-pick season in travel, this is due to the lesser number of people traveling during the month. One of the many benefits of traveling in January are the reduction in prices, it is more affordable to travel within this month, because flights and accommodations tend to be low-priced around this time, so you can expect to pay half the price you would normally pay when traveling in the high pick seasons.

Traveling in January has its pros, if you a person who likes saving and enjoys less crowded places it can be the perfect time for you to travel, and cons if you are a person who enjoys the hype of traveling during time where everyone is travelling with busy roads and willing to pay full price then traveling in January might not be more of your style. By Nompumelelo Sharyn Masinga

INGRID MONAKGOMO SEBEKA From Xodus Travel (PTY) ltd

If you are a person who prefers traveling in less packed places then this January is the right time for you to travel, since during this time schools and places of work are being opened, there are less people on the roads, therefore traveling around this time can be less chaotic and more relaxing. With less people travelling places of accommodation such as lodges, B&BS, hotels, guest houses tend to be less packed adding to that places of attraction also tend to be less crowded around this time.

AUZWEKE #Ask TEENS

ASK A PROFESSIONAL Sylvia is a professional trained social worker and founder of Future Generations, a non-profit organisation that offers social work services to learners in public schools.

Q: Itumeleng Mabe Hi Auzweke, my name is Itumeleng. Three years ago I lost my mother, soon after I fell sick. I could not eat or speak and was admitted to hospital, to find out I was diagnosed with depression. I do attend counselling sessions as ordered by the doctors but the problem is, I lost friends and no one wants to be in my circle anymore because due to depression I can be bipolar at times. I need to know, how can I make new friends again after this?

A:

Hi Itumeleng Mabe, It seems you are suffering from loss. You have lost your mother and the friends you were close with. You need to give yourself time to deal with the loss grieve over your mother and also understand yourself. I understand your emotions and try to control them. Know what make you sad/ happy and how you react and try to control your mood swings. You don’t need new friends you need someone who will support you through what you are going. You might be looking at wrong direction look at the family there are those who understand your situation and are willing to be there for you just have to notice this. Your friends it might be not all of them have left you but the one you thought are your friends have left there might be someone who is trying to support you, calling you or wanting to visit might have noticed

16

or don’t want his/her friendship. In case there is no one find someone in the family you are willing to confide to share your concerns. Church is another way of finding friends through youth groups and to get to know Jesus and know that you are loved, He cares about you and He is always there when you need him.

Q: Zertina Mhlongo Hi team, last year which was 2018, I was doing my matric. I found out May of the same year that I am five months pregnant; I kept quiet until the schools closed. I received term two results and I had passed well but upon re-opening I couldn’t go back to school because a t my school when you are pregnant you need a parent to accompany you to school daily. My mother refused, my relationship with her has since been broken. Now I plan to go back to school, how do I ask my mother to look after my daughter? I don’t have money for day-care.

A:

Hi Zertina Mhlongo, it is sad that you got pregnant while you were in matric. I admire your courage that you are willing to go back and complete your matric. Your mother might be disappointed because you got pregnant still at school and young. You need to talk with her and tell her how you have made wrong decisions which had

dire consequences. She might be hurt by your actions but she is your mother will support you, you need to show her you have learned your lesson and you need her support. The father of your child you need to talk with him about your situation and hear where he can assist because he is also responsible. You and him need to discuss how to take care of the child an also telling him that you are going back to school. This will show that you are taking responsibility of your actions and not letting your mother to be the only one responsible for taking care of your child.

Q: Koketso Makgobathe Hi Auzweke Magazine, I have a lot of zits on my face. This is killing my self-esteem, how do I keep my confidence afloat with my face like this?

A: Hi Koketso Makgobathe, it

seems to me you are concerned about your appearance and it matters to you most what people think of you. Self-esteem and confidence are qualities that you develop not because your face have zits, but come from inside of you. You develop confidence because of who you are and what you know, you are capable to do. Accept that you have zits and love yourself and when you love yourself others will also love you.

Q: Anonymous Can you please hide my identity; I would be disappointed if I find my name in the magazine as it will bring me shame. Please. I am 17 years of age and my sugar daddy impregnated me without me knowing; now he forcing me into marriage with him because he says his child will not be raised by a single parent. Please help me, my parents do not know about this and if he forces this lobola they are going to know. I don’t want to be ashamed as I am now.

A: Hi, anonymous you sound

confused and uncertain. You need to make a decision what do you want. The choices we made always have consequences. The time you decide to have sex with your sugar daddy, you made a choice that you are ready for any consequences. You are afraid of your parent’s reactions when they find out who is the father of your child. You are also uncertain about your feelings towards this man. You need to tell your parents about your situation because sooner or later they will found out. Explain your situation and tell them how you feel about this man

Q: Anonymous My boyfriend threatens to leave me because I do not ever sleep with him, how do I show him that I love him without sleeping with him?

A:

Hi anonymous you don’t have to show someone that you love them by sleeping with them. It’s either your boyfriend just want to pressure you to sleep with him. Sleeping with someone is a big decision because there are many

things that might happen, HIV/AIDS, STI’s and pregnancy. It is better to wait for the right man who is willing to wait for you. You show someone that you love them by spending time with him (not sleeping with him), listening to him and him listening to you, getting to know him what he likes and don’t like and his friends (vice versa). It is also important to know yourself first what do you want out of life, your goals and how are you going to achieve before focusing on other people.

Q: Lesedi Nkgoeng Hi, my name is Lesedi. I don’t know if my question is relevant but here it goes, I hate to admit that I am an alcoholic. I drink almost every day. My lunch box money goes to alcohol and bubble gums to hide the smell, only now am I realising that it is impacting me deeply. So far I fail every grade at school and I hate the fact that I cannot stop, please advice (sic).

A:

Hi Lesedi Nkgoeng it is a big step you have taken to admit that you are an alcoholic and need help. Realising that you drink alcohol and spend all your money on it, is one way of taking action to change your behaviour. You need to be aware why you drink every day, Is it because of friends? is there something troubling you? or it is a habit you have developed? Sit down and identify what are the triggers of your drinking and start limiting them. It is not easy to do this by yourself, you need support. One of the organisations that can assist you is SANCA. They have offices nationally find out which one’s you can visit in your area. By Masego Diale

AUZWEKE Education

From one phase of e Not all of us are open to the idea of change, but for scholars; change is something they constantly have to deal with, without even making the choice to. With moving from one phase of education to another, a scholar has no choice but to adapt to the circumstances they are faced with.

18

education to another According to an article by Education Review Office, a student’s transition can be complicated by the social, emotional and physiological changes that can negatively impact on their learning. Speaking to a first time high school learner, Kedibone Makwela who schools at Holele High School in Ga-rankuwa, the above statement was proven to be absolutely true. Makwela expresses that; moving from primary to high school was exciting the first time she heard that she was promoted to the next grade. However it all came crushing down when she could not adjust socially at the new environment, coming from a background where she would normally make friends easy, high school did not make it easy for her. Although she is trying to adapt daily to the new teachers, school and friends, she says she will never undermine going to a new stage of life again. She promises to be open minded about change as she would soon transition to tertiary level. Talking to more primary to high school transtainers, Rebaone Tlhapi a scholar at Setlalentoa Secondary School in the same area says, “While moving to a new school, try to be open minded and expect everything new. No one is going to greet you, therefore be comfortable with the idea of making new friends.

On a study done by Oxford University, these are ways to make your teenager or young adult better adapt to a new study environment; ensure that you visit the premise first as a parent to get a better look and as well as to make sure that environment is healthy. After this visit, tell your children about the premise and how the school does not seem bad at all. This will make them warm up to the idea of moving to a new environment. Another thing is to ask them about their social life and how it is improving, make sure that you are the friend that they might find difficult making at school. When coming to the tertiary level side of things, nerves seem to have calmed as there is more excitement then fear of the unknown. A first time student at the University of Johannesburg, Tshepo Mokgoko says that he is ready for this new chapter of life and cannot wait to finally be independent of his parents. Mokgoko says he has been excited from the moment he received his acceptance email till to this day where lectures are going to commence in a few days. To all first timers, either you are starting a new school, grade or going to tertiary; Auzweke would like to wish you a happy transitioning season!

GOGO SARAH MANNE HOW I BECAME UGOBELA “Becoming a Gobela (a traditional healer who also helps other traditional healers into the process of ubungoma) wasn’t part of my life plans let alone future plans” said uGogo Sarah Manne a well-known and influential traditional healer in and around Pretoria Ga-rankuwa. Although she was raised in a household where her mother was a traditional healer she never believed in the calling and never thought she would be the one to following in the footsteps of her late mother. “The calling came to me at a very young age I used to feel like I was running out of breath and did not understand what was happeing to me, I always thought there was something wrong with me but because my mother was a Sangoma she would jokingly explain that it was my ancestries trying to communicate with me, and because I never believed in any of it I would brush it off in hope that it would all soon go away”. But soon after her mother’s passing it was alleged by her mother’s family that she would be the one to take over her mother’s RANTABULE. Having had the experience before she shut it down till she was one day visited by a snake (a harmless snake which visits an individual who is yet to go into Ubungoma guiding them to their place of ukuthwasa).

The snake came to her household at the time in brought-day-light, her first instinct was to kill it but when it returned for the second time she consulted an Inyanga that is where she was told the snake was harmless and it was a sign that she had to be a Sangoma. When the snake returned for the third time it led her to a house of another Gobela at the time who took her in and enlightened her about what was happening to her and taught her how to communicate with her ancestors, it was there when she later found out she was more prevailing than her Gobela through her ancestors who had come to visits her in her sleep . That is when her journey of becoming a Gobela began. She expresses that even though she was told by her family to take over her mother ubungoma, however most of her family members were against the calling and would often refer to it as “Satanism”. But just like anyone else she prays and believes in God. Ukuthwasa isn’t witchcraft it is a gift to assistance other people in a traditional and African approach. And she wouldn’t trade being uGobela for anything. By Nompumelelo Sharyn Masinga

“Becoming a Gobela changed my life for the better, it brings me joy knowing i can help other people through my gift”

GOGO SARAH IN HER WORKING SPACE

Being a young Sangoma NOKUTHULA CAROL NHLANHLA (NYONIYEZULU her an ancestral name)

My journey of becoming iSangoma began at an early age of 24 years back in 2013, when one afternoon I went to bed with a heavy headache and the following morning woke up at my Gobela’s house. I was confused just like anyone would be at this point but my Gobela assured me that everything was going to be okay, she then contacted my mother and upon her arrival explained to the both of us that it was no coincident that I woke up at her place it was Amamdlozi (my ancestors) who had took me there during the night meaning I had a calling all along but because I was very young I was unaware that my constant headaches were a sign that I should undergo ukuthwasa. Having to be Isangoma at a very young age was very challenging and complicated because I had to balance my old lifestyle with the current lifestyle of being Isangoma, before ukuthwasa my life was like any other young persons life, I was very outgoing, liked to dress up and socializing with my friends very often but soon after undergoing ukuthwasa I had to now adjust to a new lifestyle of carrying myself in a completely different manner which made it even more harder because I enjoyed my old life at the time. I received a lot of support from my family and friends however I was rejected and judged by most of my

community members, people had their own assumptions about izangoma some even went as far as to accusing me of witchcraft, that on its own added to the challenges I had to deal with having in adapting to all the changes I was going through. Growing up with this gift I had to develop a tick skin and not allow misconceptions of others to bring me down instead be open to educating people that being a traditional healer has nothing to do with witchcraft or anything malicious we are given this gift to not only heal but to help others. To me being Isangoma means becoming a good listener , and having the ability to heal people emotionally, spiritually and physically, it is about being a pillar to your family members, community and friend in their times of distress. Although the change from being an ordinary young person to now a Sangoma was a drastic one I wouldn’t change it for the world, through this gift I have gained a second mother My Gobela in her I found a friend, a sister and a shoulder to lean on, I also learnt to be there for people when needed and I was able to accumulate a Diploma in finance and a better direction for my future, because of this gift I now have a positive outlook on life and I feel like I have a purpose in life. TRUE STORY

22

It is gone Yesterday is gone Yesterday is done Record it in your history book and keep it close. We have tomorrow We have tomorrow for a new day We have morrow for the break of a new dawn. Tomorrow is a little bit tricky It’s secretive It’s unknown It’s unidentified Tomorrow is a mystery. The present is all we have to reach our hearts desires. Now is the time to convert into our true nature The present is a gift unwrap it and be delicate. True story tomorrow is never a promise. We only live for this moment And, we live only in this moment. Unwrap the gift of now and be present.

AUZWEKE Feature

Where Love Lie At the genesis of the summer season, it was the month of october and sizwe had been suddenly invited to wedding of his church mate - to actually be a groomsman. It was a sunday afternoon when he was trying to catch up with the dance routines in church. Preparing for the wedding that was going to take place on the coming saturday, so he basically had a few days to perfect the dance moves and make sure he fit into his groomsman suit that belonged initially to the personality that he replaced since he had to cancel at last minute. During the mid week rehearsals, sizwe noticed that there were a lot of family members to the weds, after all, this is how weddings are - he felt silly that he could even dare think otherwise. But how could he have not? He was in no means related to the groom nor the bride, he picked out of the church because of his reliability and commitment. Palesa was a younger sibling to the groom, and a pretty close friend to sizwe, they got to know each other in the church - they would both be in church evry saturday cleaning and making sure that every packed chair got its share of a splash of water. And that is how they got to know each other, so sizwe was only speaking with palesa and none other, even though there were people of his age and gender, whom were also groomsmen, there was no communication however since he noticed the way they looked at him - maybe it was because he wasnt part of the family, who would know for sure?

24

Anyway, so fast forward to friday, before the day of the wedding. As a custom of many black people, the groom and his family have to travel to the bride’s house because that is where the exchange of vows takes course. So as sizwe and his fellow groomsmaen arrived in the middle of the night, there was a shout of joy, the elders ullulating and cars sounding high their horns, their car was at the gate awaiting its turn to find a parking space inside the bride’s compund. As they were in the car excited, and talking about what sizwe’s partner at reception may be, as his partner should come forth from the bride’s family, as he had been told by palesa, that his partner would be the bride’s very little sister. So as the other dudes were on about how naughty his partner may be - he fixed his gaze at the garage door - and shadows of the garage’s light bulb, he alone could see the figure of a very seemingly fair damsel standing under the light and her face being shadowed. Her shape perfectly fit the description of palesa about how his partner may look like. He kept it to himself and let the gents go on with their silly talk. Now it was a saturday after the wedding day that everybody was taking selfies with the newly weds, the cake and the groomsmen and the bridesmaids were free from each other’s partnership and were taking pictures with everybody else, the bridesmaids had put away their high heels and were resting their fragile feet on comfortable flip flops.

Now sizwe’s partner, the one who was standing under the light of the garage’s door was taking pictures with her ffriends and newly found family, she noticed that sizwe sitting at the table quiet and observing others having fun. She came over and took a few selfies with him, and thats where sizwe had a conflict of interest in his heart. He had admitted to himself that he was into palesa, but he kept it to himself and he would neither show any signs of interest to her or anyone else. Now here was the other one, busy stealing his heart with her beauty and sexy toes, that rested gently on those flip flops like a hen brooding her eggs. Beautiful toes were sizwe’s weakness on girls - of course he didnt tell anyone after that his matric class mates laughed at him when he revealed this about himself. Enquiring with a cousin of palesa as to whom he must go for, sizwe noticed a grin on kabo’s face when he mentioned that he had feelings for his cousin, he right away knew what to do - stay away from palesa!! But she is the one he had been in love with for a pretty long time, but kabo’s reaction to his enquiry was an excuse to stay away from her since sizwe himself the newly found interest - this one was somehow easier to approach. And so it happened as sizwe had thought would, he got to share a relationship with his partner - gugu - they shared a wonderful bond, sizwe as he always would, gave his all into this relationship that he once travelled from johannesburg to rustenburg and back in one day - just so he could take gugu out on a picnic. And just as you predicted, the relationship didnt last as long as sizwe thought it would

- as matter of fact, it only lasted two months when he found out from the horse’s mouth that he wasnt the only guy in the picture, as a matter of fact - he was the second guy, as many would call it, a spare wheel. Sizwe was broken at the thought that he had actually given all of himself to this girl, he thought of her the love of his life, and didnt even dare look at any other girl, not even palesa. He however picked up himself, in a few words, ended the relationship with gugu and was ready to move on with his life - well at least that is what he thought, he couldnt be ready to move on this quickly. Anyway over time, the pain healed - and for as long as he was in pain, he didnt want to hear another thing about relationships and the happily ever afters. He didnt even dare flirt or get himself caught up in eye contact with a damsel. He hated girls and the idea of dating, let alone marriage. Well after a series of events that got sizwe and palesa closer, he found himself delving deeper in love than he ever did before - his friends warned him again about going all out for a girl. He eventually approached palesa and opened up about how he felt about her - it took about two weeks for palesa to admit to her secret feelings for sizwe. This was a relief to him since the feeling was mutual and was very sure that palesa was single and had been waiting for him to approach her, as she also admitted that she had been waiting for him since she first laid her eyes on him. This came as a relief to sizwe as he thought this one would be promising and finally he would have an honest relationship. Well with all this, he told himself to not give all of himself but to slowly grow as the relationship grows. He decided that his trust should be earned and not just given as a free gift.

one sunday afternoon the two love birds sat in the wilderness just outside town. there they talked and talked until they talked the sun down, they didnt even realise that it was getting late - or rather was already late, Sizwe didnt have a problem with arriving home at dark hours but Palesa had a curfew and a brother who is very strict about the house rules. soon after dusk at the moment where a long conversation allows the tongue to rest, Palesa than snapped and started rushing home, shaking herself off from Sizwe’s lap, she took her side bag that contained her bible and a note book and rushed off Sizwe was confused at her sudden panic, looking around in the darkness to see whom she might’ve seen, he couldnt see anything or anyone, not because there wasnt anyone, it was too dark to see. following her as she rushes off, Palesa starts to talk in her haste, Sizwe tried to slow her down but she couldnt, so he caught up with her carzy pace and she explained and managed to make up words in her deep breathings and said she had a curfew and her brother would kill her as soon she sets her foot on the doorstep. their departure was a rather cold one without a hug or a long stare of adoration. as Sizwe left and went to his house, he had a lot in his mind and couldnt stop himself from wondering what would happen to her. well as usual, before Sizwe even got home, he got a message from Palesa telling him about what happened and how angry his brother was. fortunate enough he didnt give her any sort of punishment well except that she had to wash a mountain pile of dishes, which was a little thing to her - after all, she would wash the dishes everyday if not six

days in a week. now these two used to only see each other on saturdays because Sizwe used to come back late from college, his campus was far and his classes ended late in the day, so he would travel for one and a half hour by train from Johannesburg park station. so on saturdays they would start first in church, prepare the church for sunday, wipe chairs, prepare the sound system and every other thing that needs be prepared. after that when everybody was departed, these two would make sure they are the last ones to leave the church and some times they would even stay and talk in there until late hours, well late enough for Palesa to not upset his brother. this special bond of theirs was a secret to everyone, no body knew what was going on, well except for those who had eyes to see. some would even ask them what was going on between them, and they would deny it and say they are only friends, after all, they used to do a lot of things together in church. there was a time when the Pastor sent the two of them to preach at a certain school assembly, and so they used that as an excuse for their special “friendship”, so they said. Well - typical of the truth - it came out. his brother got to know of their little fling, he was disgusted, and as one of the leaders of the church, he believed that this was ungodly, especially at their age, Sizwe and Palesa knew this very well, they were taught well and knew the truth of the Gospel and living a godly life. they however couldnt get themselves to not be together.

one sunday afternoon, Palesa’s family was watching tv after a long day in church. there was a character named Sizwe in the programme they were watching, and thats when all hell broke loose. if you’d remember the bride? Thato’s wife, sister in law to Palesa, older sister to Gugu. well she started to talk about Sizwe, how that he was dating her little sister and now he is dating Palesa, how that Sizwe was a player and played girls. Thato, Palesa’s brother got angered the more and assertively demanded that Palesa should right away break it off with Sizwe or else she must get out of his house. O dear Palesa, little child of God decided that she would rather leave her family than leave the love of her life. she packed her bags and went off to her friend’s house without even giving it a second thought. later that evening she called Sizwe and told him what had happened. well now that Sizwe was now becoming more of a pastor, he advised her to tell her family what they want to hear, “ they want to hear that we are no longer together right? well than tell them that we are no longer together, and we will keep it low. no one will know, just go back home and tell them what they want to hear” after the long conversation on the phone that night, Sizwe was certain that Palesa was safe for that night at least. but from the following day, Sizwe was unsettled in spirit not knowing what the love of her life might be, if she went back home or continued at her friend’s place, or even worse, she could be anywhere in the world. Sizwe has been trying to get a hold

of her and her phone doesnt go through, it has been like that for at least two weeks. the consoaltion is that Palesa went back home and they took her phone for two reasons, 1. the phone was given to her by Sizwe. 2. to keep her from talking to Sizwe. this consolation however isnt good enough to keep Sizwe’s helpless self from crying all night every night. every time the thought of his love of his life comes to mind during the day, his heart aches. he could abviously go to Gauteng but where would he start, Palesa didnt tell him where that friend of hers lived, she refused to tell him. and he for certain cannot go to Palesa’s house to enquire of her. and so his heart will keep living in pain until he gathers the strength to go looking for his love.s and so they understood Palesa’s brother’s anger, they succumbed and for a while they decided to pretend as if they werent together, but Thato, Palesa’s brother was not fooled, he always kept an eye on them, and the two love birds noticed that he was sniping on them. they also played their game swiftly and carefelly. this went on for weeks and weeks. until Sizwe was sent off by the church to the North West province to help the church in his home town. they would now communicate more frequently and everybody noticed that these two were together again - as if they were ever apart.
