Dear Friends, Your presence here tonight is a gift. Thank you for being with us as we dance the evening away in celebration of 56 years of MADCAPS in our community. This year’s theme, Harmony in San Diego, is meant to highlight this great city of ours and focus on the work MADCAPS does to address the needs of many of the people who live here. We are an organization of moms and daughters who work in direct service to and in support of established philanthropies in the San Diego area. And since 1960, boy have we been busy! 211 daughters + 183 mothers = current membership of 394 community volunteers 7,900 hours of direct service this summer alone $78,000 donated to local philanthropies in 2015 $830,000 donated to local philanthropies over the past 56 years 17 class-designated philanthropies receive focused volunteer efforts from MADCAPS 57 additional philanthropies benefit from optional volunteer efforts over 500 hours of rehersal have gone into preparing for tonight's show

Here’s what we hope happens next. You have a fabulous time with us tonight. You walk out of Brown Chapel with a catchy tune in your head and some new dance moves to try at the next family wedding. Above all, we hope you take with you a renewed commitment to serving others in a way that has meaning for you. Whether your passion is children, the elderly, or animals, San Diego has a need. Whether you can give time or money, or both, it can be put to excellent use. See page 32 of this program for ideas! If you aren’t sure where to serve, support MADCAPS and know that your dollars are directly affecting our neighbors in need. There is a collection box in the lobby or visit www.sdmadcaps.org to donate online.

Here’s to Harmony in San Diego!

The class of 2016 had a fantastic year of volunteering. We joined our mothers at Habitat for Humanity, an experience that exceeded all expectations where we practiced our skills with hammers, paint, and power tools. We learned to lay tile, install doorknobs, and everything else needed to finish several new homes! Through The San Diego River Park Foundation, we worked alongside our fathers in taking care of some of San Diego’s most precious natural resources. Both of these organizations taught us the meaning of back-breaking physical labor and the personal satisfaction of seeing projects to their completion. Additionally, there was the ongoing enjoyment of working with City of San Diego Therapeutic Recreation Services at their many events and summer camps and cheering on the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walkers. All of the organizations opened our hearts and broadened our minds, leaving us with the desire to continue volunteering in our communities -- such a rewarding summer and fitting culmination of our six amazing years of volunteering with MADCAPS.

WORDS FROM OUR PHILANTHROPIES SAN DIEGO HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Your generous gift allows us to work alongside volunteers and homeowners to build safe, affordable homes for families in need in San Diego County. All these efforts and your donation help us meet our mission to build homes, communities and hope. SAN DIEGO RIVER PARK FOUNDATION Wow! This is fantastic! Thank you for your generous donation. Your support allows us to continue moving forward to make a positive and significant difference in the future of the San Diego River and the entire San Diego region.

From assisting with seniors at PACE (Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) to serving meals at the Gary and Mary West Foundation/ Senior Wellness Center, the Class of 2017 had a busy summer. We enjoyed our time working with the seniors and our continued volunteer work with City of San Diego T herapeutic Recreation Services. We also volunteered at a variety of other charities such as Autism Speaks, Susan G. Komen 3-Day, and Rady Children’s Hospital accumulating hundreds of volunteer hours. We look forward to continuing next year with Habitat for Humanity and The San Diego River Park Foundation.

We enjoyed working with a variety of philanthropies during our sophomore year. YWCA Becky’s House was part of our core hours, where we worked with the staff to provide childcare and support services to battered women and children. Also as part of our core hours, we applied and interviewed to work with the San Diego Humane Society helping at their weeklong summer camps, an educational experience for both us and the campers. In addition to core hours, we also volunteered at great events like “Fun in the Sun” with the City of San Diego Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS), where we worked with children with disabilities at week-long beach, bay and park camps.

WORDS FROM OUR PHILANTHROPIES YWCA BECKY’S HOUSE Thank you for your recent donation to the YWCA of San Diego County’s Becky’s House Domestic Violence Program. Generous gifts like yours not only make it possible for us to continue providing life-saving services; they also give our families hope for a better future. It has been a busy year for the Class of 2019. Our philanthropy work began in the summer volunteering for City of San Diego Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS), a program that provides unique social events to individuals with disabilities. Providing one-on-one support at their Camp at the Bay, Wet & Wild, and Kid Zone summer camps, we assisted campers with swimming, kayaking, arts and crafts and a variety of other activities. We continued volunteering with TRS throughout the year, cheered on walkers for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, and worked with a variety of other non-profit organizations. We look forward to more work with TRS, and new opportunities with YWCA Becky’s House and the San Diego Humane Society in 2016.

The Class of 2020 had another successful and inspirational year. As we prepared and served homecooked meals for the guests at Bannister Family House, we really enjoyed interacting with families. One guest shared how good he felt seeing us work alongside our mothers, giving him a sense of hope and encouragement for the next generation. At Christie’s Place, we helped with family movie days and holiday parties, and organized a Back-to-School Party where our class donated backpacks and school supplies for the children. It was fun playing games and interacting with them. At the YMCA Peninsula Preschool and Child Watch, we got hands-on experience with babies and small kids, creating bonds with the children. We also joined the other MADCAPS classes to cheer on walkers for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day. Here’s to a great and busy year, and the promise of more great experiences in the year to come.

WORDS FROM OUR PHILANTHROPIES CHRISTIE’S PLACE We cannot thank you enough for your kindness! Your dedication in helping us meet the unique needs that women and families living with HIV/AIDS face means so much to us, to the clients we serve and to the overall health of our entire community. The hundreds of hours of volunteer efforts have made a lasting impact in some of San Diego’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children. We are honored and humbled by your generous donation. Thank you for keeping our families in your hearts. UCSD BANNISTER HOUSE Holy Moly! We cannot thank you enough for the many meals you served to our guests and the generous check we’ve now received from you. The Class of 2021 logged over 1,120 service hours in 2015. We supported Rady Children’s Hospital by providing volunteers for Celebration of Champions, Neur-Onc Family Information Day, Sickle Cell Disease Family Information Day, Hemophilia Family Information Day, the annual Hematology/Oncology patient Halloween and Christmas parties, and child care for the monthly Hematology/Oncology family support meetings. We served meals at Father Joe's Villages, and volunteered for the Towerathon (benefiting the Toussaint Academy) and the annual Children’s Festival. Other meaningful experiences came with volunteering for the San Diego Humane Society, All Souls’ Christmas Home Tour, Point Loma Concerts, Monarch School Sailing Program, San Diego Brain Tumor Foundation 5K, Walk Now for Autism Speaks and the Susan G. Komen 3-Day.

WORDS FROM OUR PHILANTHROPIES RADY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL On behalf of the La Playa Unit, thank you for your double bronze sponsorship of Celebration of Champions. The MADCAPS show is so special each year and the money raised goes to such good causes. The Peckham Center is a wonderful facility giving the best possible care and treatment to young patients fighting cancer. The actual event is a day of fun for them away from treatment and doctors. FATHER JOE'S VILLAGES Thank you for your check. Your gifts do so much good! Your contributions have helped us provide more than 400,000 meals so far this year. Having a hot meal, a warm bed, or the right tools to do a job motivates people to succeed, improves morale, and increases efficiency. That is the power of your gifts to the Villages! The Graduating Class of 2016

JULIA NICOLINA BALL

VIRGINIA MANUELA BARBA

RACHAEL KATHLEEN BROOKS

ESCORT | Matthew Ball

ESCORT | Dr. David Barba

ESCORT | Rick Brooks

Daughter of Tinalynn Catucci and Matthew Ball, Julia will be graduating from Point Loma High this June. MADCAPS has enriched Julia’s life with the joy of service. Through community service, Julia has enriched the lives of others as well as her own. The bunco parties at the Purdon’s, 3-Day prep at the Hill’s, and so many other activities will forever be a reminder of the laughs and fun that marked the 2016 MADCAPS experience. Julia will be attending a four-year university this fall. She is looking forward to many more fun-filled adventures. Cheers to the Class of 2016!

Gina graduates from Francis Parker School in June and is both excited and terrified to head off to college. Her high school years were packed with theatre – at school and at San Diego Junior Theatre – and with student government responsibilities. Gina’s love of performance, both on stage and off, made the annual MADCAPS benefit show a high point. She also loved working with kids at Therapeutic Recreation Services and surprised herself by how much she enjoyed working with seniors at PACE. Her experience volunteering at Rady Children’s Hospital helped inspire her to become a pediatrician. Gina appreciates and is grateful for the strong bonds formed among the girls in her class. Her favorite MADCAPS years were when she and her older sister were in the club together. Gina is the daughter of Alisa and David Barba, sister to Maya (MADCAPS Class of 2012), Patrick (Madchap 2013) and Will (Madchap 2019). Keep it sassy, Gina! We love you!

Rachael is the daughter of Roseanne and Rick Brooks, and the older sister of Gabby and Patrick. She will be graduating from the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, with honors, in May. Rachael will be attending college in the fall where she will pursue a degree in biological or computer science and a minor in Creative Writing. While in college, Rachael plans to study abroad, explore the world and create experiences. She has also participated in rowing since the eighth grade and has worked her way up to head coxswain and co-team captain, giving her leadership skills that will last a lifetime. Rachael has loved her experiences at MADCAPS. Her favorite charity has been TRS, especially when working with the kids. She has also loved being in the show every year, with her favorite routines being during eleventh grade for tap and this year’s senior show.

GRACE ANNE EVANS

ESCORT | Todd Cahill

ESCORT | James Bernadotte DeBello

ESCORT | Bill Evans

Courtney Rachel Cahill is excited to graduate from Point Loma High this June. Her parents, Todd and Leila Cahill are also excited, but cannot believe this part of her journey is already coming to end! Courtney is beautiful, smart, thoughtful, and kind. She is also very hard working and has loved the service she has rendered through the MADCAPS organization. Some of her favorite memories include volunteering for the Humane Society, Becky’s House, and Therapeutic Recreation Services. Learning to dance alongside her fellow MADCAPS has brought her out of her comfort zone and built her confidence. These are experiences she will never forget and will be forever grateful for. Courtney, you are a strong leader with unlimited potential. We are so proud of you and we cannot wait to see what amazing things are in store as you continue onto university and beyond.

How does a child born in the year of the Ox become a young woman?

Gracie, daughter of Susan and Bill Evans, is a sixth generation San Diegan and will be graduating with honors from Cathedral Catholic High School in June. The past six years, Gracie has competed at the highest national levels in Latin Ballroom dancing, most recently placing second at the World Championships. Dance has become an irreplaceable gift that continues to instill confidence and determination in her. It’s no surprise that Gracie has found her most enjoyable moments in MADCAPS on stage singing and dancing with her friends during the annual benefit shows.

We love you! Mom and Dad

Hadley’s been a self-starter since the year of age three, showing tenacity, ingenuity and wit, chomping at the bit. We’re proud that she’s completed six years at MADCAPS with a compass that encompasses compassion, humility and heart. Approachable and coachable, her character is irreproachable. She’s always solved puzzles, read every book, become a National AP Scholar and juggled her clock to lead mock trial and debate teams at Parker. All of this bustle helped her realize her dreams and accept an invitation to join Harvard’s class of 2020. She’s expanded our views and brought us new perspective; still undeniably protective. We know our place now is to let her go, and watch her fly as high as she can grow. We love you so. XOXO Mom and Dad

MADCAPS activities have taught Grace the rewards of community service. She values the time she spent with the children at Becky’s House. This program demonstrated to her the importance of self-reliance and underscored the significant contributions a woman can make in our world. Gracie hopes to apply the lessons learned in MADCAPS to her future challenges as they unfold in college, career and volunteerism.

ROWAN SARAH GRIFFITHS

LAUREN NICOLE GUNNING

RUBY MARIE HAGIN

ESCORT | Mark Griffiths

ESCORT | Dave Gunning

ESCORT | Jim Hagin

Rowan is the daughter of Mark and Ricci Griffiths and sister to Joshua Griffiths. She will graduate from Point Loma High School with honors, and as an AP Scholar, in June. She plans on attending college out of state in the fall and studying biological engineering. Rowan participated in pole vaulting and placed fourth in CIF finals her junior year. Rowan has enjoyed her time in MADCAPS, especially learning to use the saws at Habitat for Humanity and working with the kids at Therapeutic Recreation Services. Her father and I are amazed at the person she has become. Rowan, every little thing will be good again, stars come out—will light your way, and you’re going to be that girl on the mountain top.

Lauren, the daughter of Dave and Janet Gunning and younger sister of Kyle, will graduate from Mt. Everest Academy. During her high school years, she has enjoyed competing on the volleyball and tennis teams. Lauren will be attending a California university where she plans to apply her passion for animals to a higher degree in Veterinary Sciences. She has enjoyed volunteering at the Humane Society and continues to foster young animals. Her years in MADCAPS have provided an understanding of the importance of giving back and that the effort of just one person can make an impact in other people’s lives. From a shy one year old to now a strong young adult, Lauren knows that no matter what life throws at her, she will be prepared. Shoot for the moon – even if you miss, you will land among the stars. Lauren, we love you more than you will ever know!

Ruby, daughter of Joy and Jim Hagin, will be graduating from Point Loma High School in June. A third generation San Diegan and second generation MADCAP, Ruby’s Point Loma heritage enhanced her appreciation for serving and making a difference in her community. Beyond the impactful interactions she had assisting the elderly, children with disabilities, families dealing with abuse, and the homeless, she was blessed to share these experiences with a warmhearted and fun-loving MADCAPS class. Highlights include learning to sing and dance for the annual benefit show, cheering the 3-Day walkers, and sharing tools with her mother at Habitat for Humanity. MADCAPS has been a wonderful complement to Ruby’s academic and sports accomplishments. Ruby is looking forward to a fouryear university experience and will embrace whatever opportunities the future holds. We couldn’t be more proud of the accomplished young lady you’ve become. “Live. Laugh. Love.” Mom and Dad.

EMMA SUE HILL

ESCORT | Brian Heramb

ESCORT | Bruce Herbert

ESCORT | Mitchell F. Hill

Britt is the daughter of Deby and Brian Heramb and younger sister to Haley and Cole. Britt will graduate from Point Loma High School in June with honors and as an AP Scholar. Her optimistic, energetic and outgoing personality shined on the PLHS cheer team for four years and as she served as ASB freshman class vice president and later as ASB Executive Council secretary/treasurer. Finding ways to make a difference has become even more important to Britt through her six MADCAPS years as she learned of many organizations’ need for community involvement. Her many hours of additional volunteer work with Sharp Hospital helped Britt discover that she wants her future to include a career helping others. Britt plans on attending a four-year university to study medicine and pursue a nurse practitioner degree. Britt’s fondest memories of MADCAPS are certainly the cherished friendships she has made, side-by-side, volunteering, rehearsing, sharing. As a ballerina you’ve danced on stage with grace and art, now dance into the future you’re creating… you have our pride, support and love!

Melanie, daughter of Bruce and Rosalyn Herbert is a third generation San Diegan and will be graduating from La Jolla Country Day School this spring. In school, Melanie is recognized as a high honor scholar, two-year Green Team President, varsity tennis co-captain, tutor, theatre technician and community leader.

Emma, daughter of Mitchell Hill and Genevieve Chesnut, is looking forward to life at the University of Oregon and the years beyond upon graduating this June from Point Loma High School. Her MADCAPS experience has had a positive and permanent impact on how Emma views her community, her family, and herself. From first serving food at Father Joe's Villages to ultimately planting trees with Habitat for Humanity, Emma has realized she must continue to volunteer throughout her life to better our world. She is more aware and grateful for her supporting family since helping individuals who struggle with domestic violence and assisting the elderly at PACE. She is humbled and inspired by her interactions with people with disabilities. Through MADCAPS, Emma has made long-lasting friends and meaningful memories. We are so very thankful and proud of our M&M!

Her MADCAPS experiences helped her realize that all you really need is heart and dedication to make a difference in this world. A favorite memory was with Habitat for Humanity, where she not only learned how to grout floor tiles but was also amazed how a community of inexperienced workers could come together and create a home. Melanie is grateful for everyone who supported her efforts these past six years and all of the people she met along the way. She looks forward to similarly rewarding experiences as she makes plans for college.

Jennifer Anne Irving, daughter of Rebecca and Craig Irving, will graduate from Francis Parker as a second-generation Lancer. After six years of wide-ranging philanthropic work with MADCAPS, Jennifer has learned the importance of serving others. She especially enjoyed her time with the campers and bowlers of TRS. Without MADCAPS, she would have missed this very impactful and memorable experience. She also loved the teamwork and camaraderie she shared with her classmates, whether they were cheering at the 3-day walk, or tapping their hearts out. Jennifer has a passion for surfing, and loves to ride her longboard on the perfect waves at Sunset Cliffs. Jennifer plans to attend college in the fall and will take with her the values and treasured memories of her years with MADCAPS.

Nicole, daughter of Chris and Julie Keeney, will be graduating from Francis Parker this June. Since joining MADCAPS in seventh grade, she has quickly learned to love the incredibly kind and selfless class of 2016 and all of the memories they have shared. Nicole has loved volunteering around San Diego with her classmates and her mom over the past six years. A tree hugger herself, one of Nicole’s favorite organizations has been the San Diego River Park Foundation. She enjoyed working in their River Garden and helping to paint a mural along the OB bike path, and continues to volunteer with the organization. Nicole loves to backpack, hike, and be outdoors, so she plans to study Environmental Science in college and follow the footsteps of the Lorax to save the trees, hopefully travelling around the world along the way. Dream big, Nicole!

Maili, daughter of Janette and Scott Lampe, will be graduating from Point Loma High School where she has been active in ASB all four years. In her current role as ASB president, she’s had the opportunity to represent San Diego both locally and at a national level. Whether it’s writing / delivering persuasive speeches for our local government or lobbying Congress, Maili likes to get involved.

EMILY CLAIRE MODER

ESCORT | Casey Tonoian

ESCORT | Mike Metcalf

ESCORT | Michael Moder

Glynis, daughter of Eve and Daniel Merriman, step-daughter of Casey Tonoian and older sister to Dottie and Georgia, will graduate from Point Loma High School with honors. Glynis has been enthusiastically involved in many school activities, including playing tennis for four years and serving as treasurer for the Cesar Chavez Club. MADCAPS has taught Glynis that the more you put into something, the more you get back. The best example of this is her work with Therapeutic Recreation Services, where she worked with kids with a spectrum of disabilities and committed herself to getting to know them and making their time at camp meaningful and memorable. From this, Glynis made special connections with the campers and learned a lot about herself in the process. Glynis will attend college on the west coast where she plans to study biochemistry, and we couldn’t be more proud! Remember Glynis, “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”

Elise, or Lisee to everyone else in the world, daughter of Rosemary and Mike, is graduating from High Tech High International in June. Her natural empathy and compassion provide an affinity for serving and helping others – a hallmark of MADCAPS. Whether working with people at Therapeutic Recreation Services, Father Joe’s, or Saint Paul’s, she gives them the full frontal impact of the love and devotion she feels for everyone. Watching people cope with a variety of issues and challenges has opened her eyes to the world. Although she has spent the last six years working as an actor, the MADCAPS experience has been indispensable in honing her craft. How do you represent humanity if you haven’t experienced all its different facets? We know she is ready for whatever the future holds… as long as there is acting involved. Tweet…there truly is no one like you.

Emily is the daughter of Cheryl and Mike Moder and sister to Katie Wuchina and Ally Moder (MADCAPS 2012). She will graduate from High Tech High with honors and plans to attend a liberal arts college outside of San Diego. Emily is a responsible, goal-oriented young woman and her MADCAPS experience has inspired her in many ways. From serving meals at Father Joe's Villages to cheering walkers at the 3-Day Walk to helping build a home at Habitat for Humanity, Emily has found many ways to support those in need. Her work with young children at Becky’s House and Head Start helped her realize the importance one person can make in the lives of children and has influenced her to pursue a career in education. ESCORT | Sandy Purdon

ESCORT | Eric Remley

Emma is the daughter of Michael and Kelly Moore and will graduate from Francis Parker School with honors. She is a four-year varsity cross-country runner, student diversity leader, and an editor/writer for her school’s magazine. “Eye-opening, thought provoking and rewarding” is how Emma describes her years in MADCAPS. She loved making a difference using power tools at Habitat for Humanity, interacting with the kids at Becky’s House, and learning to tap with the great girls of 2016 to raise money for our philanthropies in the annual benefit show. Her favorite volunteer experience was helping campers surf and kayak with Therapeutic Recreation Services. Through MADCAPS, Emma realized the needs of many people in our own backyard, and has gained an interest in global humanitarian issues that she’ll further explore in college.

Emily is the daughter of Kathy and Sandy Purdon and will graduate from Francis Parker School, where she has attended since kindergarten. She has enjoyed connecting with her classmates as an active member of ASB, serving as vice president for the school, and a varsity volleyball player, winning two state championships. With a smile that lights up a room and a great sense of compassion for others, Emily is grateful for her opportunities to brighten the lives of others through her MADCAPS volunteer service and global service projects in Ecuador and Cambodia. Her most rewarding MADCAPS experience was connecting at such a personal level with the young adults at TRS. Emily will study Applied Mathematics/Finance and Business and pursue a career in the prevention of elderly financial abuse, sparked by her volunteer service at PACE. Emily you are an inspiration to us all and we love you the whole world.

Chloe, daughter to Eric and Tina Remley, will graduate from High Tech High Media Arts with honors. She plans on attending college in the fall where she will study anthropology. Chloe has excelled in the classroom as well as at ZLAC Rowing Club and on the softball field for High Tech High. She helped her team, the Storm, win their first ever CIF Championship last year and hopes to repeat this year. She also has been recognized as a Union Tribune All-Academic player. Some advice for fellow MADCAPS from Chloe: be open to every experience and try to participate in a diversity of volunteering opportunities. Don’t be stuck to your friends throughout your time in MADCAPS, get to know all the people in your class and above all, have fun and connect with people.

“Dance like no one is watching! We love you.” Mom and Dad

Emily, daughter of Erin and Jim Schabarum, sister to Kate (MADCAPS 2014) and Phil (future Madchap 2020), will graduate from Point Loma High School with honors. She served as a member of PLHS’ Associated Student Body and was involved in several community service programs including Cesar Chavez Club and Bridges to Community (Nicaragua). During the past four years, Emily has enjoyed competing on the women’s varsity tennis team, winning Eastern League, and competing in the CIF Quarterfinals and was recognized as a Union-Tribune All-Academic player. Emily’s experience with MADCAPS taught her that one person can make a difference by brightening the lives of others. She is grateful for the friends she has made along the way and for the memories to last a lifetime.

Tatum is an energetic and confident young lady. She has worked hard to do well in academics, athletics and community. Tatum looks forward to college and pursuing a career in pediatric nursing. In addition to MADCAPS, her activities have included four years of cheer at Point Loma High School and 10 years of competitive cheerleading. Tatum was a member of the elite team NFINITY, which won the World Championship in 2015. Her disciplined dedication to school and cheer has proven that success often requires hard work. MADCAPS has reinforced this perseverance and provided her the opportunity to help other people meet their goals and needs. Tatum experienced how diligent clients at TRS, Father Joe's Villages, PACE and Habitat for Humanity work to overcome struggles and try to better their lives. Tatum is very grateful to her sister Shelby, grandparents and parents for the support and encouragement in all her endeavors.

Gwen, daughter of Barbara Austin and Charlie Snyder, will be graduating with honors from Cathedral Catholic High School. In high school, she participates in many clubs and activities, including assistant editor on yearbook, National Honors Society, French Club, Interact, Fashion Design, Dance Team, and, her senior year, rugby. Gwen, an accomplished dancer, began ballet at the age of three, and has cherished several dance roles, including Clara, in the Nutcracker. Through MADCAPS, Gwen has experienced many varied needs in our community, instilling in her a passion for volunteering. She especially enjoyed TRS and Becky’s House because of the meaningful interaction she had with the participants. Gwen is excited to explore her many interests in college, especially in the area of design and community development, and plans to continue volunteering. What a joy and blessing it has been to watch her grow into such a bright, caring, and amazing young woman!

We are so proud of you, Em! The house will feel lonely in the fall but we can’t wait to see where life will take you next.

30 | Choreographers

Our choreographers come from a wide varieties of backgrounds. Many of them have been working with MADCAPS for years, and we could put this show on without their support. In dance, choreography is the act of designing dance. Choreography may also refer to the design itself, which is sometimes expressed by means of dance notation. A choreographer is one who designs dances. Dance choreography is sometimes called dance composition. Aspects of dance choreography include the compositional use of organic unity, rhythmic or nonrhythmic articulation, theme and variation, and repetition. The choreograhic process may employ improvisation for the purpose of developing innovative movement ideas. In general, choreography is used to design dances that are intended to be performed as concert dance. The art of choreography involves the specification of human movement and form in terms of space, shape, time and energy, typically within an emotional or non-literal context. Movement language is taken from the dance techniques of a combinations of many types of dance.

MADCAPS was established on May 24,1960, when a

to decide on a name and voted from selection of Madreninas, Madrigals, Merry Teeners, Mu Delta Phi and MADCAPS. On September 17, 1960, MADCAPS made its debut at a tea for fifty charter members and their 46 daughters. In those days, even the daughters wore gloves to such functions. In the spring of 1961, MADCAPS attracted the attention of another national group, the Assistance League. After much discussion, the senior membership voted not to join this group and continued to develop their own unique motherdaughter organization. The first fashion show was

32 | History

The fashion show was a dessert luncheon affair, and the fashions were interspersed with skits. Some of the themes were “Madcappers Tea Party”, “Our Fair Ladies”, and the “10 Birthday Party”. The shows were held at the U.S. Grant Hotel, Hotel del Coronado, House of Hospitality, Thursday Club, and Scottish Rite Memorial Center. As the show grew, so did the audience, necessitating a move to USD’s Camino Theater. Other venues included the California Theater and the East County Performing Arts Center. In 1986 the show moved to Correia Middle School where

it became primarily a dance show. In 2015, a larger venue was again needed, and the show found a new home at Point Loma Nazarene University Brown Chapel. For many years, each class chose a philanthropy to support. The groups varied from children to senior citizens to the disabled. In 1985, it was decided to set up a program that would enable the girls to assist various groups at least once during their six years in MADCAPS.

Our current focus areas are: 7th grade (community service); 8th grade (children); 9th grade (individuals with disabilities); 10th grade (drug, substance, emotional and physical abuse);

11th grade (cultural

and community events);

and 12th grade

(a choice of any of the previous).

Since 1960, MADCAPS has raised over $830,000 for distribution to many different philanthropies in the San Diego community and contributed hundreds of thousands of hours in volunteer time to these same philanthropies.
