DESIGNER. FRIENDLY. RELATABLE. JOY. WARM. HARD WORK.

PERSONAL BRAND

In the development of my personal brand, I wanted to create something the design firms and clients I aspire to work for would connect with. At the same time, I wanted it to give people a deeper look into who I am outside of being a designer and to tell the story of what makes me unique. Through reading my handwritten personal statement, the viewer learns about me, my passions, and my values, and they feel a deeper connection to my personality. I seek to be a joyful person who radiates enthusiasm and optimism, just as golden yellow tends to represent. For the people who know me, looking at my personal brand fits my personality. If you do not know me, you get a glimpse into both who I am along with my design sensibilities before you meet me.

A raised spot gloss was used on the front of my business card to ensure that the most pertinent information, my name, would be seen first. It adds contrast, clarity, and allows my personal statement to be harmoniously layered beneath my name. In my personal statement, the dark orange words highlight the design related elements of my personality while the white words are less design specific.

ONETIME. URGENT. CELEBRATION. SASSY. INTENSE. SHARING.

SENIOR SHOW

The Point Loma Nazarene University Senior Show collateral highlights two different events — a week-long visual art gallery opening and a onenight graphic design portfolio review. The use of photography, sculpted matches, and computer based type brings both art and design majors together in a piece celebrating their unique disciplines and talents. Fire was used as a visual metaphor to highlight the limited time frame of each event. The campfire feel also correlates to the stories and celebrations to be shared over the works on display. The phrase, "Come See Us Before We're Gone," continues the sense of urgency while engaging the viewer in a lighthearted, sassy tone.

After deciding fire would be the best way to represent the brevity and intensity of this event, I selected matches for their moldability and inherent flammability. I wanted the viewer to see the poster, be drawn in by the large flame, and come in to read the message. Hundreds of matches were carefully placed in a stencil made out of laser cut spaces. Next, several light tests were shot in order to find the perfect white balance and shutter speed. There was only one chance to get this right. Three cameras were used to ensure the perfect angle, the fire extinguisher was nearby in case it all went wrong, and five assistants stood in expectation. The first match was lit, and there was no going back.

The fire spread from the 'g' to the 'e' within a matter of seconds. What I had not anticipated was the balanced flame that danced atop the letters for long enough to get several shots. Postprocessing entailed removing the paper and clips that supported the operation.

TALIA MOYER 2016 The website features a singlepage responsive design with scroll effects. The initial screen is the familiar image from the poster. The arrow on the bottom invites the user to scroll down. The next screen features the artists and designers presenting work at the Senior Show. Scrolling over a picture gives you the person's name and major, and clicking on this takes you to their website. The next two screens feature information for the two distinct events.

CHANGE. ENVIRONMENTAL. INTERACTIVE. ACTION. FAMILIAR. SUSTAINABLE.

BY 2050...

In order to design an experience that promoted social change and environmental awareness of Point Loma Nazarene University's sustainability story, a four-sided 4' x 8' chalkboard box was built. As a piece of human-centered design, the research and execution was focused on creating a solution that influenced the students on campus in a way they would connect with. During Creation Care Week, the box was placed in a well-trafficked area on campus to encourage student and visitor interaction. The box draws on the ideas of the "Before I Die" global art project, yet it seeks to be more of a temporary and movable installation. The stencil font was chosen for its practicality and earthy feel. In order to carry continuity with the campaign's message, a majority of the pieces in the project were recycled or found materials. All of the lines were filled within two days of the box being displayed, and the students walked away with a greater understanding of the 2050 initiative.

CHARACTER. FEMININE. CHARITY. SERVICE. NOTEWORTHY. REGAL.

MADCAPS

MADCAPS is a San Diego organization for 7th through 12th grade girls and their mothers. Throughout the year, each grade level partners with local philanthropies in order to help build relationships and character. At the end of each year, a choreographed show features each class in order to raise money. The show's program included highlights on each class along with a variety of accompanying information. The feel needed to be modern, feminine, and charitable. The layout, grid, and text hierarchy were created to be flexible for a wide number of pages and information. The deep pink was chosen to reflect the girls and women featured throughout MADCAPS. The logo draws from the letter "M" (to use the first initial in the organization's name), a wave (to place it locally in San Diego), a jester hat (to mimic the old logo), and a fleur de lis (to emphasize regality and femininity). The tickets were created to be handed out as reminders of the details of the event, along with functioning as practical tickets.

GLAZED

As an innovative app created for the donut-loving community, Glazed is fun, bright, and easy to use. Instead of relying on photographic imagery, Glazed is lighthearted in its strong foundation on color and text. It breaks the mold of other social media apps in a way that encourages the user to engage in and discover all the potential of the app. Cubano, a bold sans serif font, was chosen for its round edges and youthful feel. The bright colors are inviting and lively and mimic the sugar rush and excitement of eating a donut. The use of the repetitive circles brings continuity, while the subtle gradient helps the app feel modern and up to date with iOS9.

EXCITEMENT. DARING. SAFETY. AVIATION. PROFESSIONAL. FUN.

A HIGHER PLANE AVIATION

A Higher Plane Aviation is an aviation services company in New Mexico with services ranging from flight instruction to piloting to aviation consulting. In the creation of the company's brand identity, the typefaces were used to create a playful, spirited feel while keeping structure, professionalism, and safety as the most important concerns. The colors were taken from the New Mexican desert and sky. The logo draws heavily from the iconic Zia symbol, a symbol that brings New Mexicans together, while also mimicking the body, wings, and propeller of a plane. The identity seeks to be familiar and approachable to aviation enthusiasts in the southwestern United States while also being unique, bold, and distinct among the aviation competition in the area. It embraces the excitement that comes with flying, yet it is constrained to promote and guarantee the level of safety demanded of an aviation company.

The supporting pattern used on the back of the envelope, the business cards, and throughout the brand is a sectional aeronautical chart of the airspace around Albuquerque, New Mexico. For those outside the world of aviation, the maplike qualities help connect it to the purpose of the brand. For those within the aviation community, it furthers the brand's locational placement along with giving one more touchpoint into the brand's personality.

FIND YOUR PLACE

The AIGA Student Portfolio Review is an annual event where recent graduates from around San Diego come together to have their work critiqued by design professionals. As graduates transition from college to professional life, the theme "Find Your Place" illuminates the idea of finding a new professional home, networking, and hopeful employment. The map ties the theme together while also allowing each of the schools that participate in the event to be included. Surveyor, a thick, clean serif font, was used to highlight the classy professionalism of recent graduates. The outer line is used to connect the viewer with both the supporting brand and the logistical information, and as a road map along the journey of finding your niche after college.
