T IGI Donates Products to Makeover Mission
T
oni & Guy Haircare US donated $1,00,000 of styling tools, hair and makeup products to the Makeover Mission Outreach Center on May 18. Anthony Mascalo, International Creative Director for the US Toni & Guy headquarters, said he was inspired after members of his staff volunteered at a local Dallas Cut-a-thon, hosted by The Makeover Mission. “I heard about about how amazing the program is for hairstylists to be involved in,” Mascalo said. “I love what the organization stands for and how it helps those less fortunate just feel great about themselves.” Toni & Guy, also known as TIGI, was founded in London by brothers Giuseppe “Toni”
and Gaetano “Guy” Mascolo, in 1963. TIGI expanded to the US and is headed by their younger brother, Bruno.
Anthony told Bruno that The Makeover Mission would be the perfect organization for TIGI to get involved in and Bruno agreed.
“TIGI’s original mission statement when Toni and Guy founded the organization was ‘to make the client look good and feel good,’” Bruno said. “We believe that The Makeover Mission aligns itself perfectly to this. Essentially, just to make people feel good about themselves.”

Letter from the CEO This has been an amazing month for The Makeover Mission! Watching this organization grow has been a dream of mine since cosmetology school. My went on a class visited the Mary Martha’s Outreach Center.
We cut hair and gave manicures to the homeless residents for free. The residents kept telling us how they wished we would come back more than just our usual twice a year. I remember the looks on their faces and their appreication for just a fresh coat of polish on their nails. I knew, then, that all I ever wanted was to make people feel just like that every day, whether they could afford it or not. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful, confident and special. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life.

(continued from page 1) “TIGI products have been my favorite brand even before I went to cosmetology school,” Forrest said. “To get recognition from a company I admire is crazy!” Bed Head, S-factor, Catwalk, Bed Head cosmetics and TIGI Pro are among the products donated by TIGI. TIGI Academy is an education program for stylists who want to continue learning new techniques after cosmetology school. Thomas Osborn, US education director for TIGI Academy, said he would like to integrate The Makeover Mission into stylist education.
“As a professional stylist, you get so caught up in finding ways to make more money for yourself, you forget why you fell in love with hairdressing in the first place,” Osborn said. “It’s about making people feel great about themselves. Having our stylists volunteer with The Makeover Mission is a perfect fit.”

Despite low self-esteem being one of the most common effects of homelessness, many organizations don’t make this problem a priority in their efforts. “A lot of people gave me strange looks when I started the Makeover Mission based solely on raising the self-esteem of homeless individuals,” Forrest said. “I didn’t care because I believe everyone deserves to feel beautiful. Makeover Mission Prepares Client for Interview

he walked with her hair in a disheveled ponytail. It was uncombed and overgrown by at least eight months.
Jane Smith was the first client to enter the Makeover Mission Outreach Center on a Saturday to get a free haircut. Jane has been couch jumping at friends’ homes for more than a year. “I thought my rock bottom was ending up here,” Jane said. “But rock bottom is finally admitting that you don’t know how to get yourself out of these circumstances. I never thought I could feel so bad about myself.” Low self-esteem is one of the most common outcomes of homelessness, according to an article by Frederick A. Diblasio. Low-self esteem hinders those trying to successfully integrate themselves back into society. Despite this, few organizations that cater to the homeless take this fact into consideration.
The Makeover Mission’s goal is to provide hair and beauty services to homeless or low-income individuals who are trying to find a job or create a fresh start for themselves. The rationale is that if the foundation is set for self-esteem, the person will be more motivated to pursue, obtain and keep the career. Tori Forrest, a licensed cosmetologist, founded the Makeover Mission in 2012.
Focusing on building the self-perception of those they help is the most important step before creating their new life, Tori said. “You can give underprivileged individuals every basic necessity to make a fresh start,” Tori said. “However, if they don’t have the self-assurance to believe they can make it on their own, they won’t continue to succeed.”

Homeless individuals begin to experience depression because they find themselves in the position where they can’t provide themselves or their families with their basic survival needs of food and shelter.
The Makeover Mission is an organization devoted to help build up the self-esteem of its clients before sending them to find a job.
Jane recentlyhad an interview on Monday. The Makeover Mission provided her with a new haircut, a fresh manicure and an interview outfit.
“It’s been a rough couple of years and I feel like this job interview is the
opportunity for me to create a better life for myself,” Jane said. “The Makeover Mission gave me the confidence that I need to just walk into the interview without the insecurity that they will judge me for how I look.” Low self-worth contributes to poor job performance. This is caused by the belief that they don’t have the ability to do more and that they are hopeless and incapable of improvement. Tori believes that boosting self-respect will yield long-lasting results when it comes to helping the homeless and stop the cycle of repeat homelessness. “It’s such a simple concept, but it’s powerful,” Tori said. “Just make them feel good about themselves. Even if it’s for a day, they believe that they really can be a better version of themselves.”

Volunteer Spotlight: Samantha
T
here are many stylists who donate their time to The Makeover Mission, but not few put in as many hours as Samantha Kelley.
Samantha is a stylist at Kimble Hair Salon in Los Angeles. She is an educator for Kimble Hair Care Systems at traveling national hair shows. Kimble was ranked as one of the best salons in the United States, according to Elle Magazine. Samantha, a licensed cosmetologist, volunteers every Saturday at the Makeover Mission Outreach Center. She participates in every Cut-a-thon event hosted by the organization. She is a show stylist for the annual Makeover Mission Cosmetology Expo. With all this success she has experienced, it is hard to believe she was once on the other side of a Makeover Mission chair.
“I was homeless for a year,” Samantha said. “My mom and I slept in our car for a majority of my senior year of high school. It was a miracle I even graduated.” Samantha first stepped into the Makeover Mission as a client in need of a haircut and interview outfit for a waitressing job at a local restaurant.
“My stylist, Teresa, made me feel special,” Samantha said. “I felt so great after my visit, I nailed my interview and got the job. The pay wasn’t amazing, but it

was something. I told Teresa that I had always wanted to be a hairstylist and she got me in contact with the cosmetology director at Tri-County Technology Center.” Samantha received a scholarship for the one-year program. She paid for her fees and styling products with the money she made waitressing.
“Now here I am, working at my dream salon,” Samantha said. “I owe so much to Teresa and the Makeover Mission. I really believe I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t swallowed my pride and walked through those doors.
