The North Mallorca Branch of the Calvia Lions held its second May Fira for the benefit of victims of domestic violence on Sunday, May 13 at the Claustre in Pollensa. It was a great success! The stalls were constantly crowded, selling homemade food
and jams, a giant paella, beer, wine, and soft drinks, bric a brac, and books, as people enjoyed the music of professional musicians on the stage. Best of all, it was an inclusive community event, where local Mallorquins, and residents of every nationality continued on Page 3...

Hola!
Local News Getting to Menorca Just got Easier The Ciutadella-Alcudia route will be even busier this summer with seven daily frequencies between June 15 and August 31. The Balearia shipping company, which makes this trip all year round with a ferry and a highspeed boat, will introduce an extra three high-speed daily services. This doubles the frequency seen just three years ago in 2015. This means, in the high season, between June 15 and August 31, Balearia and Trasmediterránea will make seven daily trips from Alcúdia to Ciutadella and another seven return journeys (on Wednesdays, there are six). An increase in passengers in just two years is 28%, with 286,611 travellers making the trip last year. The Alcúdia-Barcelona route will also have a daily service (except Saturday) with the Martin and Soler ferry.
Catalan Subsidies During the plenary session at Alcudia’s Town Hall last week, the PP announced its support for providing subsidies to businesses that use Catalan in their printed promotional material. This proposal was granted urgent attention by the government team (PSOE, El Pi and Gent per Alcúdia) and obtained unanimous support at the last plenary. Included in the proposal was an amendment from the PP. Originally containing the text: “It is totally legitimate to grant aid for the exclusive use of a minority language that must be enhanced... .” It was replaced by: “We consider it legitimate to grant aid for the
T A L K
use of a minority language that must be strengthened...” In its statement, the council stressed that, “the objective is not to exclude the use of Castellano… it is to encourage the use and presence of the Catalan language.”
Joining the debate… Miquel Ensenyat contributed to the debate, criticizing the Government Delegate, Maria Salom, for appealing before the courts the subsidies being awarded by the municipality of Pollença: “One of the many initiatives of the Insular Directorate of Language Policy has been the recovery of subsidies for labelling in Catalan, these were originally eliminated in 2011…”.
the skatepark at the sports centre in Puerto Pollensa (€35,000); the installation of exercise and mobility machines in the Residential Home grounds (€2,500); space and racks for bicycles in the main square (€35,000); reform of the infant and primary playgrounds of the CEIP Joan Mas, as well as enabling leisure spaces with tables, benches and gardens (€39,210). The most ambitious project, in terms of budget, is the clean-up of the archaeological site of Bóquer, with a cost of €50,000. Another costly proposal is the improvement of the antenna signal to improve radio reception in the Port, which would cost €10,600.
Ensenyat added that “... enhancing our language cannot be perceived as a threat, if someone lives that way, it just confuses things or tries to confuse them.” The contentious issue rumbles on island-wide.
In principle, the most popular proposals will be incorporated into the municipal budgets for the current year 2018. The only fly in the ointment is the local government getting the political support that will guarantee an approval of the accounts.
Participation Projects
Schools Out for Summer…
Pollensa’s Evaluation Commission has accepted 16 of the 37 projects suggested by residents, which demand the improvement of several urban spaces. The majority are projects focused on the extension and improvement of street furniture in different areas of the town. In its first year the so-called ‘participatory budgets’, are in the final stage and the voting period has opened.
The local police, Guardia Civil, town halls, secondary schools, health centres and families in the local area are working together for the first time to prevent the consumption of alcohol, thefts and sexual assault at the annual end of term party that brings together between 4-6,000 young people in Alcudia.
Some of the suggestions include a seating area where the Gelats Valls kiosk is in the Plaza Major in the Old Town (€35,000); the reform and expansion of
All parents of underage students in the municipalities of Alcudia, sa Pobla, Pollensa, Santa Margalida, Muro, Inca, Sineu, Porreres, Binissalem and Manacor will receive in the coming weeks an informative letter about
the party planned by young people on June 8. They will be given the mobile number of a plain-clothed “police guardian” from their town who will be present on the night to help protect the students.
Quandary at the Parroquies in Pollensa The image of the Virgin that stars in the procession of the Reunion on Easter Sunday was shattered when the table she was placed on gave way after the Easter service. The rector, Xisco Vicens, has opened a consultation to decide if he should restore the statuette, replace it with an older one or order a totally new one. Working with the local paper, Punt Informatiu has launched a poll on its website for people of the town to have their say. The rector explained that the broken figure does not have a great patrimonial value: “It is at most 100 years old and is made of plaster based on moulds... although it can be restored, it would not be the same, but one thing is the patrimonial value and another the devotion; It’s the one that people know.” The alternative is to recover an older and more valuable carving (of the eighteenth century) that was in procession before, but it would be necessary to rebuild its clothes. The results of the survey will not be binding but the parish Council wants to know opinions before making the final decision.
Train to Alcudia The Government has recovered the project to extend the train line to
Mallorca 312 done, Ironman done, frontline done, bus station done-ish... everything is ready for a big 2018 season and we think that Puerto Pollensa has never looked better. Thank you to Garry Bonsall for the front page shot this week. It shows so much of the recent development made in the Port. There’s a lot to pack in over the next fortnight. Sa Pobla’s Potato Night fair and the Nautical Fair in Can Picafort promise a good time, so check out the What’s On pages and get organized. Netballers... come on! You know you want to. Details on page 8. See you in two weeks! Jo p.s. Watch the football on Sunday. I urge you. Being there for the first play-off for promotion was brilliant, the atmosphere (they say) was just like the good old days. Read the full article from Charles on back page/page 9.

Among the highlights of the Fira included the Xeremiers Orats, who played traditional Mallorquin folk music as they marched from Club Pollensa to the Claustre, where the mayor of Pollensa cut the ribbon and opened the fira.
Local children’s drawings of their families, based on the theme “Families come in all shapes and sizes” were displayed, and the best drawings were chosen to win wonderful prizes.
The heroes of KartForce, British veterans who were injured in active duty, were introduced, having just finished a gruelling 24-hour kart race on the island, which was sponsored by the Lions. The Aires de la Cala ball de

IBdona brought their van and did a terrific job raising awareness of the very serious issue of domestic violence on Mallorca. Onit, the Pollensa non-profit that does so much good in the north of the island, played a major role on the day and Daniel and his team were absolutely essential to the success of the Fira. Everyone had a wonderful time while knowing they were contributing to a worthy cause! the port of Alcúdia. It is one of the long-term proposals included in the mobility plan to be presented by the Regional Ministry of Territory next month. It forms part of the government’s strategic plan to connect the two major ports of the Balearic Islands: Alcudia and Palma and the intention is for the islands to become more globally connected, greatly facilitating the connection between Palma and Ciutadella. The plan does not, however, solve the old question of where the train line will actually go. Such a source of contention, this is what caused the project’s downfall in 2009. Alcudia Mayor, Toni Mir told press he was surprised as they had not heard anything about the project. He wonders if it is just a “Globo Sonda”, a kind of experiment to test public opinion before it becomes real news.
Feria d’Abril in Alcudia Alcudia’s Feria de Abril was a success last weekend with thousands visiting the town to see the Sevilla-based displays and dance performances. Ten restaurants participated
with their tapas offerings, especially the traditional ‘pescaito frito’. On the last day, the powerful ‘Missa Rociera’ was sung by the Rociero Choir of Mallorca.

Celebrations at Sa Bassa Blanca Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and to mark International Museum Day, the Sa Bassa Blanca Museum in Alcúdia, has received a piece of art generously loaned by the Abelló Collection of Madrid. The portrait by Juan Pantoja de la Cruz, is the product of a complex history of alliances between royal families, namely the Spanish branch of the Habsburg and the Bourbons of France which led to the arrival of the Bourbons in Spain. The painting represents the Infanta of Spain, Doña Ana Mauricia, first-born daughter of Queen Margrethe of Austria (1584-1611), wife of Philip III (1578-1621), and future wife of Louis XIII of

France (1601- 1643). Also in the famous “Nins Collection” at the museum, there are two exceptional portraits of Louis XIII, painted by Frans Porbus the Younger, so this “meeting” of two masterpieces shows two royals represented as children, still unaware of their shared destiny. Also as part of the 25th anniversary programme, a workshop on conservation and restoration of works of art will be held on June 2 from 9:30am-5pm. Led by Eva Martínez Morales, art historian and curator-restorer at the Museo del Prado in Madrid, this is a collaboration project with the Consell de Mallorca.

It won’t have gone unnoticed that gin is somewhat en vogue. Gone are the days with the choice of either a Beefeater or Gordon’s. Now, no self-respecting bar will have less than a dozen gins from all corners of the world all with a reassuring artisanal touch of being distilled in ‘batch’. One of the pioneers that pushed the market forward (and prices upwards) was Monkey

47, hailing from the Black Forest in Bavaria. The ‘47’ derives from the 47 botanicals used in the blend and the 47 % alcohol level it’s diluted to. Stylistically the gin has notes of cranberries, wood, a little citrus but also grassy. The question asked though with the premium price, ‘...is it worth it?’. In my mind undoubtedly yes. This isn’t a gin to smother with tonic, but a dash will do or better still use it to make a martini or a strong negroni. You can certainly pick out the nuances and it adds a distinctive edge to your evening tipple.

The Value of a Rental Licence
You have the freedom to enjoy your island home whenever you like. While, in the hottest and busiest months of the year, you will probably want to avoid the heat, there are others who have to come in this period because of school holidays commitments. Meaning, you will get a return on your investment at the highest price level. And don’t forget that the rental season in Mallorca runs from at least April/May until October/November.
A three-bedroom villa with a pool will generate a rental income of between €3,500€4,000 a week in July and August. This adds up to €32,000 for a two-month rental. What’s not to like? We have a great selection of properties that already have all permits in place and this is a great opportunity to be among the first to realise the true benefits of owning a beautiful home that has a rental licence. Zaragoza B 0 -1 Real Mallorca In the final game of the regular season, a team of Mallorca reserves came out on top. The hosts had already been relegated and as Mallorca has already won the group, La Liga allowed the game to be played on Saturday. That gave the islanders an advantage as they were able to travel home early on Sunday. In fact when the team sheet was released to the press, head coach Vicente Moreno had named an eleven that did not include any regular starters. Nonetheless the visitors performed admirably and a goal by fullback Fran Gamez was enough to enable Mallorca to finish the season on 73 points, 8 clear of their nearest rivals Villareal B.

The Mallorquinista Half Way There by Charles Nutter
Real Mallorca took a big step towards promotion back to Segunda B last Sunday with a 3-1 win against Mirandes in the first leg of the play offs. In front of the largest crowd of the season, over 13,000 fans, Mallorca made the best possible start with Lago Junior sweeping home a cross from fullback Sastre. Head coach Moreno had clearly sent his team out to play a high line and press the visitors from the first whistle and for the first third of the game the visitors were hardly able to break out of their own half. The crowd were in euphoria when centre back Raillo headed home a Salva Sevilla corner in the 23rd minute. As half time approached the team began to look a little jaded and were wilting in the muggy conditions. After the break it looked like both sides were content to let the score stay the same. CanaryIsland-born Aridai had different ideas, however, and he scored the third with a header that crossed the line in what appeared to be slow motion with the fans willing it to enter the net. That appeared to settle the match but substitute Camacho scored for the visitors on 75 minutes with a wickedly deflected effort. Only 3 minutes later Mallorca substitute Bustos carved his way through the Mirandes defence with a superb piece of

skill and inexplicably ballooned his shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat. With five minutes remaining Lago Junior was taken out by a professional foul on the halfway line and an almighty confrontation took place between all 22 players and most of the coaching staff from both teams. The away goal scored by Mirandes could have enormous repercussions in the second leg. If they were to win by 2 goals to nil then they would be promoted on the away goals rule. The calculators will be at hand this weekend and Mallorca would benefit enormously if they were able to score an away goal themselves. After much discussion the game will be played this Sunday 27th May at 5.30pm. Mallorca wanted the kick-off to be at 12 noon as all their games have been at that time. Mirandes wanted 6pm on Saturday but the final decision was made by Bein Sports who hold the global rights to broadcast matches in La Liga Segunda B. continued on page 9
