13TH SEPTEMBER 2018

You’ll find the Jardines de Alfabia just before the tunnel to Soller. An unassuming entrance, there’s no sense of the space you are about to find. With our €5 Mallorca-resident tickets in hand, we head up the steps where there is a typical patio of the Mallorcan ‘Posessions’. At the end is the garden’s emblematic pergola with its water fountains. Built at the beginning of the 18th century, the water jets cross each other, creating a watery walkway to run around in. It’s great for the kids to cool off in and it will reward you with an extra half hour without the inevitable moans and groans.

Jardines de Alfabia

Down some steps, the gardens continue with hundreds of mature palms, olives and more tropical plants. Alongside the lilly pond, there is a wide array of Palm trees and garballons – a protected plant found in Mallorca. It is in this full yet organised garden space you will find a clearing that is

Local News Wildlife Action in Campanet The Wildlife Foundatio, Fundacio Vida Silvestre de la Mediterranea, based at the Finca Son Pons has launched its new bee protection scheme. The organization which was the Black Vulture Foundation, has been working for many years to protect the environment of Mallorca and this new project will cover protection and education. This weekend, work will commence on a garden of aromatic and medicinal plants, creating a place for bees to feed. Located in the forest of Son Pons the first job is for volunteers to removed stone from the cleared patch of land. When the garden is finished, a small hive will be installed. This hive will have a glass side so that children can see the internal organization of the bees. This will enable the group to teach a practical nature class during school visits.

Storms in the North The storm at the beginning of this week dropped 40 Litres per m2 onto Pollensa potentially causing havoc on the roads, beaches and torrents. The council was quick to communicate its response. While the rain filled the torrents of Sant Jordi which filled from the Torrent of Ternelles, the water flowed through the town without problem either on the roads or at major bridges

of Horta, Romà, Sant Jordi and MA-2200. Official Technicians from the Water Resources authority also confirmed that the vegetation that had grown in the torrent bed, dry from the summer, did not have any effect on the drainage. Along other points where the torrent crosses with local roads with low capacity pumps there was some flooding, particularly at Can Mas but the municipal team worked through the storm to remove obstacles, the police closed roads for the duration. The storms also had an effect on the beaches of the area. The beaches of Llenaire and Can Cullerassa needed to be cleaned up. But perhaps the most effected was Cala Barques in Cala Sant Vicent. The strong flow of water shifted so much sand off the beach and into the sea that the rocky surface underneath was exposed. It also cleared many of the sunloungers and parasols. The Associació de Veïns del Port de Pollença have worked this week to get the beach back to normal.

Office offered information directly onboard so that passengers could plan their trip of the town. The SeaDream I, with 112 passengers, is a luxury all-inclusive boat that hosts cruise holidays on the Mediterranean, Caribbean and other places. It later departed for Sant Antoni in Ibiza and will return to Puerto Alcudia on October 17 at the end of the cruise season. around 160 children receive the benefit of the new facilities. The project included improving the walkways with rubber slabs, a new area for babies, replacing old toys with new, planters with flowers, cleaning and decorating and redesigned areas, among other things.

Nursery Schools Investment Two nursery schools in Alcudia (the public nursery Sa Balon in the Old Town and the private S’Estol del en Jaume in the Port) have received €35,000 investment in new toys and outdoor activity areas in line with the council’s commitment to developing the educational facilities from the youngest students to the oldest. All together

Officials from the council of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands visited the SeaDream I cruise, as docked for the first time in Puerto Alcudia. Officials were received by the crew, and Captain Torbjorn Lund, and after an exchange of gifts, there was a tour of the boat. Alcudia’s Tourist

Formentor Tunnel Light The last remaining unlit tunnel in Mallorca - the Fumat, in Formentor – will have light before the next tourist season. The Consell already has the mandatory environmental reports and plans to start the tender in the coming months, with a planned investment of over €196,000. The darkness of this 196-metre tunnel had led a Swiss businessman Mallorca resident, Max Hürzeler, to present a project to assume the cost of half of the lighting. The Consell, however, say that the plan to illuminate the tunnel was already underway and add that they will be funding the project exclusively.

Can Morató Dilemma Rafael Morató, co-owner of the old carpet factory in Pollensa, has submitted a letter to the Council requesting a specific modification of the urban regulations which would allow a socio-cultural, commercial and hotelier use in this well-known property that has been in an unstoppable spiral of degradation for years. Alternativa, the opposition party in Pollensa say that the old factory, which was declared a listed building in the insular catalogue of historical heritage of Mallorca in 2001-2, has been left to ruin by the owners and the various local councils in the last 17-18 years have done very little to defend this property of “history and heritage of Pollensa.” Rafael Morató, says that the council is responsible as it has not established any use that would allow its viability. The approval of the Land Law at the beginning of the year has further aggravated the situation as the property could be considered rustic land. He argues that if the family invested the necessary €3m, it could not even obtain the certificate of habitability. Not only does it not have hotel use as requested, but it does not even have the use of housing because the finca does not reach the plot area required by the regulations on rustic land. This is explained by the architect Antoni Ramis who, together with José María Mayol, have been assigned the job of

awarding the factory with a use compatible with rehabilitation.

Mindfulness Congress Local organization, AFAMA, will be holding the a congress in Pollensa on 21st-23rd September with various experts, and will focus on the caregiver and how to preserve the cognitive abilities of people who suffer from Alzheimers. The congress, aimed at professionals, caregivers and patients, will present the results of a recent studies combined with practical sessions.

also begins to showcase the enormous benefit in reducing stress, anxiety and burnout syndrome in caregivers (almost always direct relatives) of Alzheimer’s patients.

Body Found in Bay The decompose body that appeared on Friday in the bay of Pollensa belongs to a man who was wearing three layers of clothing, leading researchers to believe that it was an immigrant who fell from his boat and weeks later, his body, was dragged to the beach.

Formentor Bus

José Luis-Reig, a clinical psychologist and researcher at the UIB who has carried out different therapeutic workshops for the IbHealth, explained that mindfulness is to give full conscience to the reality of the present moment with a basic attitude of acceptance. He adds that the usual practice of these techniques has substantial benefits for the person affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The latest studies show that in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, the cognitive deterioration of those who perform these practices is slowed for at least 2 years, compared to patients who follow the usual treatment, which show a significant decline in the same period. Likewise, the latest research

Traffic to the lighthouse of Formentor was reduced by 78% with the new restrictions that were in force since July 9, say the Department of Roads of the Consell de Mallorca. In May 4,750 vehicles were on the road each day, in August the figure fell to 1,050. The Minister of Territory and Infrastructure, Mercedes Garrido, was happy with the Pilot Plan, “although all the parties involved now need to meet to make a full assessment and outline what has not worked.” The shuttle bus left Puerto Pollensa, with stops at the viewpoint des Colomer, on the beach of Formentor, Cala Murta, cala Figuera and the lighthouse. During this time more than 34,000 people have made use of this transport service.

Cartonpia Cartonpia first featured in TOTN is 2015 but a recent birthday present inspired me to revisit this super jewellery brand. I’m so thrilled to have necklaces made with TOTN copies print lives on after all! Born from a passion for design, craftsmanship and recycling, Cartonpia is Alejandra Epifani’s line of jewellery, furniture and accessories made completely from paper. Inspired by nature and geometry, Epifani takes waste products that have reached the end of their usefulness and upcycles the material into items of beauty. The result is a perfect blend of originality, simplicity and functionality. The paper Epifani uses to make the jewellery ranges from boxes to magazines and newspapers while cartons and cardboard tubes are selected for thickness and arranged and fixed together to make chairs, lamps, storage boxes and other home accessories. For the jewellery, the paper is prepared over days. First pulped with water, it is made into a smooth paste and modelled into

beads, ready for threading. Newsprint is spun into threads and woven together. Paper of different weight and colour are wound into pieces of different shapes, sizes and textures. Finally, the paper becomes wood once again, either multi-laminated or with hundreds of selected leaves beaten and worked as if it were wood. Each piece is original and has its own set of colours that are only discovered during the carving process. Whatever the process, each piece is pierced, dyed, finely finished and mounted to create jewellery that is complete unique, impossible to replicate. Alejandra Epifani an industrial designer, works from her workshop where she and her family live among the sheep and almonds at the foot of the mountains of Mallorca. Look out for her at the Autumn Firas and online.

used for functions. Needless to say, this is a stunning wedding location. The house features a beautiful mix of Arabic, gothic and renaissance styles, Baroque, Roman and even English style. Everywhere are hints of its Arab residents; the coffered ceiling, with inlays forming beautiful and typical arabesques, features the coats-of-arms of the Arabic families who lived on the estate. Next to those of the Moor Ben-Abet of the 13th century, the bars of the Kingdom of Aragon are superimposed. In the frieze reads “Allah is great. Allah’s is the power. There is no other God but Allah”. The mix of interior is testament to how the house of Alfabia has made the passage of time, “it is a model for respect of the past and evolution, of conservation

and innovation.” Once you’ve enjoyed the gardens and taken in all the buildings (stables and oil press as well), head back to the carpark but stop for lunch at the restaurant where you will find a great menu for the whole family. For more information, visit www. jardinesdealfabia.com

Hopes for a Clean-Break Brexit Boost Exchange Rates Stay on top of the latest currency news and time your transfers effectively. Latest currency news The pound has been strongly influenced by Brexit over the past two weeks, making tentative gains against the euro but having a harder time against the US dollar. The GBP/EUR rate has improved over the previous fortnight, opening at €1.10 and hitting €1.12 last week; the pairing has most recently fallen back to €1.11. On the other side, the EUR/ GBP exchange rate has fallen from £0.90 to £0.89 over the same period. Elsewhere, the GBP/USD exchange rate opened at $1.28 and rose to $1.30 over the previous two weeks; Sterling has since fallen to $1.29 in the pairing. The EUR/USD rate has fallen from $1.16 to $1.15 over the two-week period. What’s been happening? The last two weeks have seen theforpound fluctuate zak.pdf 1 16/07/2018 15:37:16

on Brexit speculation, with only limited domestic data being released to give traders something to go on. The main support for Sterling has been the assumption that a no-deal Brexit could be avoided, following remarks from EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier. Mr Barnier did not specifically rule out a nodeal Brexit, but raised hopes for imminent progress in negotiations that could lead to a good deal being struck between the UK and the EU. Euro traders drew the short straw, with Eurozone data showing falling economic confidence and a reduction in the overall Eurozone inflation rate. US dollar movement was dominated by trading news - the US$ rose with reports that the US and Mexico had agreed to a provisionally revised trade deal. Less supportive were concerns about the next round of US-Chinese trade tariffs, which experts believe could cause economic pain for manufacturers in both nations.

What do you need to look out for? A key Bank of England (BoE) meeting is coming this Thursday, during which BoE officials will discuss whether to adjust interest rates. Policymakers aren’t expected to change the rate from 0.75%, but could still trigger GBP/EUR and GBP/ USD exchange rate gains if they hint at a 2019 rate hike. Another major piece of UK data will be 19th September’s inflation rate readings for August. If inflation picks up then Sterling could also appreciate due to greater pressure on the BoE to consider raising interest rates.

The euro could be moved by this Thursday’s European Central Bank (ECB) meeting if, like the BoE officials, ECB policymakers hint at higher interest rates in the future. This coming Thursday will also be a key one for US dollar movement, when key inflation rate figures for August are due out. If the readings show a slowdown then the US dollar could fall in value, as slower inflation reduces the likelihood of a near-term Fed interest rate hike. The Mallorquinista Best Start for Years by Charles Nutter former Mallorca goalkeeper Alberto Cifuentes made a number of excellent saves. With time running out Lopez slotted home from a corner and nearly 9,000 fans went into raptures.

Real Mallorca have made their best start to the season for a number of years with three wins and one defeat out of the opening four games. This puts them clear in second place behind Malaga who have made a perfect start with four wins. At home last Friday against a strong Cadiz team the fans had to wait until the 89th minute when substitute Alex Lopez scored the winner. The first half was a cagey affair although Abdon Prats missed the proverbial sitter on 25 minutes. The islanders came out strongly after the break with midfield maestro Salva Sevilla back to his best pulling the strings. Fullbacks Fran Gamez and Salva Ruiz made surging runs into opposition territory and

After winning their opening two matches Real Mallorca succumbed to a one-nil defeat at Alcorcon in the suburbs of Madrid on Friday 31 August. This followed the win earlier in the week at Majahahonda, also in Madrid, the previous Monday. In La Liga 2 games are played over a four-day span between Friday and Monday and Mallorca spent a lot of time travelling and in hotel rooms. They did appear jaded at Alcorcon and conceded an early goal to veteran striker Jonathan Pereira. There was a good response from the islanders although Salva Sevilla had one of his poorer games in midfield and wasn’t able to get the ball out often to his wide players. Fullback Fran Gomez hit the post before half time. On 63 minutes Carlos Castro, the hero of the piece four days before,

turned into a villain when he blazed a gilt edged chance wide with only the home keeper to beat. On the final day of the transfer window Mallorca rescinded the contract of Javier Bonilla which meant that in total there were no less than fifteen departures from last season’s squad and eleven arrivals. Head coach Vicente Moreno is in his second season in charge and is happy that he has a competitive side. Mallorca played Oviedo at home in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday 11 September. These games are now a one-legged

affair and Moreno made ten changes to his starting eleven. The “second” team acquitted itself reasonably well and another one-nil victory saw the islanders progress into the next round. Ferran Giner scored the winner in the second half with a well placed shot from the edge of the area. This was his first competitive start since a serious injury last season. He will certainly be pushing for a place in the first choice starting eleven. Mallorca are away at Elche this Sunday 16 September and home to Albacate on Sunday 23 September with a 12 noon kick off.
