Tragedy in the North
FRE
E!
Full Fiesta Agenda Inside Last week, the news was full of the missing IBANAT plane, an Air Tractor 802 out on a reconnaissance flight as part of this year’s firefighting campaign. A seemingly normal flight that was three quarters of an hour in, suddenly lost contact. From 18:08 last Tuesday (12th June) the plane could not be traced nor the pilot’s mobile contactable. It took 3 days and the largest search
and rescue operation seen in recent history on the islands until the plane was found 62m below the sea just west of Cala Sant Vicente. It involved no less than a dozen ships and aircraft, and more than 300 people belonging to different agencies, in a great coordination effort. In the end it was the Navy Ship ‘Tajo’ that located the sunken plane late on Friday. continued on Page 3...

On Monday the autopsy proved that the 46-year-old pilot, Antonio Alfaro, died due to a blow to the head and mercifully would have died instantly as his plane landed onto the rough sea. The autopsy showed no sign of drowning. The results support the theory that he died when his plane hit the sea as he tried to conduct a splashdown landing. This would have been a very complicated manoeuvre, the plane has a fixed landing gear, which increases the chances of overturning when trying to slide onto the water. Also, adverse sea conditions would have made it even more difficult; the waves were at force 6 and the clash against the sea would have been very violent. The aircraft, which was split in two, has been transferred to a hangar to be analysed in detail by investigators. They will be looking into why the aircraft ended up in the sea when everything appeared to be normal. They will also be looking into the failure of the emergency beacon which was not activated and delayed the recovery of the plane. The investigation will be a two-pronged approach. On the one hand, Guardia Civil officers will be looking at reasons as to why this happened, on the other the Commission for Investigation of Accidents and Incidents of Civil Aviation will prepare a purely technical report. Speaking to press on Monday, the pilot’s brother Noel Alfaro said that “The island honoured my brother in life and death… Antonio was happy living and working here.” He also thanked the huge operation deployed to find him and his plane.
Formentor this Summer The island-wide traffic jam misery that held up the island last year has led to the Consell de Mallorca to impose traffic regulations in order to preserve the island’s natural beauty. In August 2017 the road to Hotel Formentor and the Lighthouse saw a daily average of 12,000 cars. This year, the local council has confirmed that the road from the hotel up to the lighthouse will be closed to cars, instead the shuttle bus service will take tourists to the area of outstanding beauty. According to the Consell’s data, entitled IMD (the average daily intensity) the hotel road accounted for nearly 7,000 cars, the HotelLighthouse road, over 4,600 cars. So this summer, the road will be closed to cars (except for residents) from 9.30am to 7pm.
Terrace Checks in Pollensa The council of Pollensa is to carry out “exhaustive inspections” into the “occupation ordinance of public space”, in other words ensuring that restaurant owners comply with regulations concerning their terraces. At the same time, the council will be looking into replacing the current regulations, in force since 2002, and bring them up to date with current demands. They will strengthen controls so that licenses are respected and public space is not occupied without authorization. Some areas experience more problems than others, in particular the frontline in the port which
is now semi-pedestrianized and the Plaza Major in Pollensa. In some cases, the council warns that they will “seal” or “remove illegal or excessive occupations, whether catering premises or businesses that transport goods.” The council stresses that the measures are not to be more restrictive, it intends to “cover the numerous legal gaps” that current regulations present. At present, the Council is granting the last authorizations for the year, to cover the various new premises opened this year. They intend to have the new ordinance in place by next year when the new licenses will be given.
Frontline Closed to Traffic for Longer The council has extended the hours of pedestrianization, meaning the frontline will be closed to cars for longer. The new no-cars schedule, which came into force last Saturday, is from 2.30pm-5am. Before, cars couold move along the front until 6pm so the pedestrian use has been extended by three and a half hours. The section of the Passeig Saralegui between El Cano and the Enginyer Roca roundabout will stay open until 6pm so that cars from the Ports area can leave. The change is made in response to the experience of recent months and to the number of demands the council has received. In the first season of the new system, it was found that the road closure at 6pm caused confusion among residents and road users. It is also acknowledged that trade traffic is present mainly in
the morning so they won’t be affected by the new hours. The council will now analyze the operation of the timetable and assess, once the summer is over, if the hours are applied indefinitely or, indeed, if other changes are necessary.
End of Term Party Two weeks ago, the traditional fin de curso party brought teenagers from high schools from different regions of the island to Puerto Alcudia. Local police say that between 4-5,000 teenagers arrived in the port to have dinner and party with friends. It was something that authorities and local police were prepared for and many had visited schools to talk about under-age drinking and problems associated with it. On the night itself, at about 10.30 pm, police officers gathered at the local police headquarters. Their plan was to monitor students, helping them to avoid incident and avoid over-drinking. Dressed in civilian clothes, the officers patrolled the area. Guardia Civil officers who specialize in minors were also present. Alcohol was one of the main concerns, indeed for many students this would be their first encounter with drinking, something that both police officers and emergency services were very aware of. In response, police officer were given the power to remove alcoholic drinks from those under 18 if they considered it appropriate. They could also identify teenagers and inform their parents or legal guardians about their behaviour.

If ever there was any doubt, and I think there was at one point, it is definitely summer! We know this not just because of the heat but also the bursting-at-the-seams agendas from towns and villages in the north. We have everything on the What’s On pages! Enjoy.
No i punt! The councils of Calvià, Pollensa, Ses Salines and Andratx have joined Alcudia in the extension of the ‘No, and that’s it’ campaign. The “No i punt, Mallorca free of sexist aggressions” campaign will now be targeted to the large floating population that visits the five towns during the high season as well as to foreign residents.
Jo p.s. subscribe to the TOTN newsletter, you’ll never miss an issue ever again!
With about 4 million extra visitors, the campaign will now include posters and flyers in German and English in addition to Catalan and Spanish and they will be distributed to tourist areas.

Festival of Pollensa
The Baroque Orchestra of Seville will open the festival on 4th August. Andoni Mercero along with Carlos Mena will perform the concert, Tutto Vivaldi. The orchestra, with more than 20 years experience, is unquestionably considered one of Spain’s best orchestras of the Baroque style. The Aurora Orchestra led by Nicholas Collon with Imogen Cooper on the piano will perform on 20th August with a Mozart and Beethoven repertoire. The distinctive interpretation that musicians memorize (they play without
scores) captures their great creative spirit.
Also on the programme is a masterful mix of classical music and humour by Igudesman & Joo; the Vogler Quartett — a string quartet with Mallorcan clarinetist Pascual Martínez Forteza, soloist of the New York Philharmonic; the family concert Free Diary of Musica; and the guitarist Ricardo Gallén. Tickets are already available on the Festival website festivalpollenca.com and generaltickets.com.

The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, will perform the closing concert on Wednesday, 29th August. It will be directed by Gran Ton Koopman, with Yetzabel Arias (soprano), Maarten Engeltjes (contratenor), Tilman Lichdi (tenor) and Klaus Mertens (low). They will offer one of the culminating works of the history of music: Bach’s minor Mass.

The Festival of Pollensa has launched its 2018 programme. The seven classical concerts will be held in August at the Sant Domingo Cloisters. This year, the 57th edition, the stars of the festival are three great orchestras; the Baroque Orchestra of Seville and the Aurora Orchestra and Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir.
drink
With this month’s fiesta, Rom Cremat has made an appearance. This is a traditional drink popular in the Catalonia region. It is served to accompany a performance by havanares, songs based on 19th-century Cuban music. The ingredients are rum, coffee beans, sugar, lemon peel and cinnamon with other spices. Placed in an earthen ware dish, the rum is heated and then set alight. It means that some of the alcohol is burnt off, so it’s not too strong but a very decent hot toddy!

Habtur Urgently Requiring PROPERTY FOR SALE Call us on: +34 619 155772 www.pollensaestates.com In the news recently was a report from Habtur. In it the organization estimates that direct losses from tourist rental amount to €100m and they calculate that the regulations “make it practically impossible” for some “20,000 families” to continue to rent their homes and second homes to tourists. For Habtur, the negative effects of the law will also extend to restaurants, shops and supermarkets, so they calculate that income could
come down another €900m per year. It is the kind of news story that most people expected and no one is particularly surprised. But Habtur is an organisation worth watching. It is the main association of holiday rentals in the Balearic Islands; a union of owners, that together, work to defend owners’ rights and promote a new, more sustainable model that benefits the whole of society.
It gives institutional representation, promoting owners interests and defend a new tourism model. It provides information and advice on both legal and administrative matters. It also participates in reports and studies and generates all news related to the sector. What’s really interesting is the organisation’s plan going forward. Its campaign “Towards Integrative
Your Yourdream dreamlifestyle lifestylebegins beginshere here
Tourism” aims “to emphasize the importance of tourist rent for a better distribution of wealth,” explained Habtur President Joan Miralles. Essentially this is a group that is actively opposing a law that affects everyone, from property owner to bar owner to holiday maker. What’s more you can get involved by becoming a supporter and/ or a partner. Visit the website www.Habtur.com for more information.

The Mallorquinista Champions of Champions by Charles Nutter
Real Mallorca were confirmed as overall champions of Segunda B when they won the second leg 0-1 away at Madrid side Rayo Majadahonda. Head coach Vicente Moreno fielded 8 of his fringe players but crucially had a spine of Xisco Campos, Salva Sevilla and Lago Junior. In the 35th minute Campos headed home a Sevilla corner which effectively ended the tie. The rest of the game slumbered along and afterwards the squad were officially allowed to leave for their summer vacations. Sadly Mallorca B were unable to emulate the first team. Despite winning the second leg of their playoff against Atletico Sanlugueno 2-1 the B-team were defeated on the away goals rule. As a result of the first team’s promotion Moreno’s contract was automatically extended for two years. This is the best possible news as the club’s American owners seek to achieve stability. Astonishingly there have been 14 head coaches in the last 7 years and only Michael Laudrup in that period has seen out a full season in 2010/2011. Thoughts are already turning to next season’s squad and Nigerian striker Cedric Omigui has been released and joined Lleida. In pre-season Cedric looked like he could become a regular scorer but that promise never materialized. Fringe players Damia Sabater, Nunez and Fran Grima among others will be asked to find new clubs. On the incoming front Dani Rodriguez an attacking midfielder has already been recruited from Albacete to provide a goal threat from the middle of the park. At the civic reception to celebrate the seasons success the Mayor of Palma ambitiously proclaimed that the team could be pushing for promotion again next season to the promised land of La Liga. This would be a tall order given that Mallorca
will have a salary cap of €4.5m over 12 months for players. This is based on gate receipts over the last term and the ongoing debt for income tax, which is being reduced by instalments. Two of the clubs relegated from La Liga, Deportivo La Coruna and Malaga have a salary cap of €25m and €20m respectively. Mallorca will again be searching for bargains but Moreno has proved himself adept in that department. After the reception, striker Abdon Prats blotted his copybook when he was breathalysed and subsequently banned from driving for 7 months. Mallorca’s blossoming youth policy has been raided by Italian giants Fiorentina who paid the buy out clause of €2m for the very promising 18-year-old midfielder Tofol. Half of the fee will go to reduce the income tax debt currently standing at 17 million euros. This debt is a result of poor finance management over a number of years but the current owners are doing everything in their power to put the club on a sound financial footing. The head of the American consortium Robert Sarver has repeatedly stated that he is involved with the club for the long haul. There is a state of optimism and euphoria among the fans and that has to be harnessed and nurtured. There are likely to be a number of incoming and outgoing transfers and Talk of the North will keep readers up to date throughout the summer.
