The Eco-Tax
The eco-tax is in its third year and the prices have increased, but what is it all for? And why should we pay it? Well the scheme, ‘Illes Sostenibles’ is a legitimate cause. With over 13 million tourists arriving in the Balearics each year, investment in infrastructure is essential. To put this into continued on page 3...
La Patrona 2018 Timing was not on our side for this year’s Patrona in Pollensa, we have no pictures of the day, but there is still a story to tell. The issue of equality has been at the forefront this year, thanks in part to the designated Area d’Igualitat at the council where work has continued with the ‘No i Punt!’ Campaign, self defence classes, LGBTI awareness week, International Women’s Day activities and more. So, no surprise then that the issue crops up with the fiestas. continued on page 3...

Holiday Let Law Home owners can now apply for licenses to rent legally to holiday makers. For the first time in history, owners of private apartments can begin the process of licensing their property. Once zoning has been approved, owners have to buy ‘places of occupancy’ and submit the declaration of initiation of tourist activity (DRIAT). Other documentation is needed such as a certificate from the local town hall, the certificate of occupancy, continued on pages 8-9...

Local News Rescue Drills in Muro A spectacular rescue drill was carried out last week at Playa de Muro. Among the new methods used was the employment of drones. The activities were carried out over the water and in the sand and the drones gave first assistance to victims of a supposed drowning until the arrival of the personnel to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres. Other situations that were demonstrated were when kayakers lost their paddles, dealing with a wheelchair in the sand and dealing with jellyfish.
Lights Camera Action at La Fortaleza The beautiful backdrop of Puerto Pollensa’s most famous property will grace our screens once again, this time in a Netflix series, “Turn Up Charlie”, written by Idris Elba. The star will play the main role as a failed DJ who’s trying to relaunch his career while working as a nanny for his famous best friend’s 11-year-old, wild-child daughter. 300 local extras were employed to recreate a huge party at the estate. There was just one night of filming in Pollensa but Elba and his team have filmed in Felanitx, Santanyi and Calvia. The series will be broadcast sometime next year.
Firework Fail The town hall in Alcúdia apologized last week via social media for the
“deficiencies” in the fireworks show that closed the Fiesta of Sant Jaume last week. The audience reacted to the firework show who complained that they were slower than usual and the music was not coordinated with the pyrotechnics. The council admitted that “the contract did not match with the fireworks display”, and that they been in touch with the contracted pyrotechnic team to forward the complaints. The team did apologise and put it down to a computer programming defect, which is how the fireworks are launched, as opposed to manually. It was this defect that caused the lack of coordination and a large number of fireworks not being launched. The council has taken the “appropriate measures” to recover part of the cost.
Alcudia’s Latest Adopted Son During the recent Sant Jaume Fiesta in Alcudia, the Hijo Adoptivo was formally announced. Snr Bartomeu Català was awarded this esteemed title thanks to his foundation, Proyecto Hombre. A priest in the town, Català set up Proyecto Hombre an organisation that helps drug addicts. The decision to make him Hijo Adoptivo was made unanimously at a Council session in March.
Parking Problems Peaked Until relatively recently, Playa de Muro was an idyllic and almost virgin area. It is in fact the last of the three municipalities of the Bay of Alcúdia that has developed its
tourism centre. Today it has become a densely travelled place in summer, especially on weekends. It has got so bad that the mayor, Martí Fornés says that the area has “reached the ceiling” of capability. Parking has become extremely difficult as visitors to the beach come to see “the best in Spain”. Indeed, the whole area is saturated. There are very few plots of land to be built and they are only on residential land. There is not a single tourist plot left. The Council estimates that the population of Muro is 3,000, in summer this goes up to 20,000. A parking solution is very difficult, the mayor told press that it is impossible to create a carpark as there is no free space and a ring road is not possible because of the natural parks of Comú and the Albufera.
Sunscreening of a Different Kind On the playa de Muro you can find a new system that is working for the prevention of skin cancer. ‘Hi-Point’ is a “sophisticated invention” that will revolutionise the field of skin cancer prevention. Inventors Nadal Muñoz, Pedro Martínez and Domingo Barceló, all from Mallorca, have developed a unique software that can quickly generate a personalized report on individuals and their own needs in terms of sun protection. The software photographs the individual and from that can determine through the hair and eye colour and skin tone, the minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPH) they should use and how many minutes it would take for the skin to burn.
The project, hailed by the council as a ‘world pioneer’, has the collaboration of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), and various other organisations. The ‘Hi-Point’ system provides advice on healthy lifestyle and raises awareness of other cancers or heart problems. Each module is also fitted with a defibrillator.
Campanet’s New Road Residents of Campanet have been presented with five different options for a new road that aims to take the traffic out of the main town and around it onto the sport centre, school and to Moscari. The proposals consider the territory, the impact on the environment, the road’s capability and cost. The Consell, who presented the ideas, say that the most viable option would cost €5.2m. During the presentation, where 50+ residents were in attendance, the councillors made assurances that no homes would be affected and that the road would hold two-lane traffic with space for bicycles and pedestrians. The farms affected by the expropriation process would receive €10 per square meter. If any homes were affected, then they would be paid €120 per square meter. Displayed since 17th July, the five options will be open to public feedback for 45 days in total. It’s a long-awaited project that will ease the traffic situation that everyone wants.

Hola! If you get this on time, then I hope that the ‘Plan Your Day’ article for the battle of the Moros y Cristianos is helpful. It’s so easy to assume that everyone knows where to go but if you’ve never been why would you? And if you’ve never been, you really must! After that, the Mare de Déu d’agost kicks in and there will be more fiesta fun to be had in Can Picafort. This time you can go and catch rubber ducks for a prize! There’s tonnes going on over there, so check out the What’s On pages (pg4-5). See you in two weeks! Jo p.s. La Patrona 2018 continued from front page Joan Mas, Dragut and his men, the old council, all the protagonists are played by men, while women are left to stand in the streets in their nighties. The traditionalists would argue that this is how it has always been, or that this is historical fact. But, as Punt Informatiu put it in their report, the battle we see on
August 2nd is “a sentimental recreation”. To assume that women didn’t play a larger role during the infamous attack may be a little naïve. Back in 1550, there’s no doubt that women were attacked and they were defended. What’s more the militia that defeated the Turkish invaders actually had much
more sophisticated weapons than poles and forks. Clearly, a more realistic recreation is far from favourable but it shows that there is room to move away from the modern tradition. Perhaps there is a bigger role for women to play on August 2nd?

perspective, the population of Mallorca is just shy of 900,000. Tourists, come from all over the world (but mainly Germany and the UK) leaving their carbon footprint on the islands and this needs to be compensated. The taxes collected from holiday-makers amounted to €30m in 2016. This was invested in 46 projects. 80% of that was in environmental protection projects and improvement of water supply. The remaining 20% was spent on projects related to sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, innovation and research, as well as better training and creation of qualified jobs. In 2017, the tax generated a total of €64m. On 16th October 2017, the Commission for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism selected 62 new projects to be financed. In the north, these projects include the new bus station in Puerto Pollensa and the Formentor Shuttle bus, the recovery and renovation in properties at Son Real, recovering municipal trails on the Tramuntana, maintenance

The Animal Refuge, Pollensa by Rosemary Komaromy
to support his family. The couple went on to have two daughters. He cleaned up after the animals and cared for them, but it was Josephina who initially had to work in the mornings to earn money to feed them. Local community members particularly ex-pat German and British people supported her work and formed an association who raised funds to help meet the costs. Josephina Vivancos’s lifelong work with animals began nearly 50 years ago with one sick black dog who was wandering near her house. This was soon after she had married and moved into the finca where she lives today. No one would take pity on the poor animal so Josephina did. In those days, she explained, vets were only working with farm animals and weren’t really interested in dogs and cats. Attitudes were very different then. She finally found an elderly vet in Alcanada who said the dog had Leishmaniosis. She contacted an animal refuge in Palma to find out how to look after it, and afterwards continued to take abandoned or ill-treated animals there. But soon realised that she would have to establish her own animal refuge at her home near Pollenca.
Her husband, who sadly died two years ago, was sympathetic and loved animals too but always made it clear that he was working

Today the refuge is a registered charity and can receive donations from organisation as well individuals, in cash or with PayPal through their website. Local vets support the refuge and for many years, volunteers have helped out in the mornings. Rehoming in Mallorca is now focused largely on cats. A partner organisation in Germany has rehomed dogs over many years, who have been flown to their new homes there. Now a little older and without her husband Josephina has reduced the scale of her activities but is still totally committed to helping animals. She is pictured with her photo taken on the Queen’s 50th birthday, when she was invited to meet her majesty on a British battleship in Palma in recognition of her charitable work. The Mallorquinista Gearing Up by Charles Nutter
both away, are against teams who were promoted at the end of last season from Segunda B in the form of Rayo Majadahonda and Alocorcon. On 9 September the visitors to Palma will be Cadiz from Andalusia.
Real Mallorca are gearing up for the start of the new season in Liga 1,2,3 as the Spanish second division is known. The fixtures were drawn last week and the islanders’ first game is at home to Osasuna on Sunday 19 August with a 7pm kick off. The team from Pamplona, like Mallorca, have spent a number of seasons in La Liga over the last two decades and will be formidable opposition. In complete for zak.pdf 1 the 16/07/2018 contrast next15:37:16 two games,
Head Coach, Vicente Moreno, is continuing to shape his squad and welcomed back into the fold winger Ferran Giner who suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury in November last year in the game at Olot. He is now training fully and hopes to be available for selection for the opening fixture. The ninth newcomer into the squad is Philipe Sampaio, 23, a Brazilian central defender who has joined from Russian club Grozny. He previously spent three very successful years with Banavista in Portugal before moving to colder climes. He did suffer
a serious injury whilst with Grozny and is hoping to resurrect his career in the Balearic Islands. In the first nine days Moreno scheduled the squad to fifteen training sessions to get them into peak condition. In a training match goalkeeper Manolo Reina suffered concussion following a collision with central defender Raillo. Thankfully there were no serious repercussions and he was able to take his place in some pre-season friendlies. The first two were against local amateur sides Felanitx and Constancia from Inca. The first game ended in a five-nil victory for the professional team and, for the record, the scorers were Stoichkov and a brace apiece for Abdon Prats and Buenacasa. The second game was even more emphatic with a nine-nil win for Mallorca in the Inca Trophy. Moreno fielded two
entirely different teams in each half giving all the squad some game time. This preparation is a far cry from the days when the club used to carry out preseason training in Austria with competitive friendlies against teams from the English Premier League and the Bundesliga. More games against stronger competition notably Malaga will take place before the big kick off. Moreno said that he wants to bed the nine newcomers into the squad with easier games initially and then build on that against better teams. He said that the fans expectations are of course high at this time of year but we have to be realistic. As always in football, preseason games count for nothing and assessments of the strength of the squad can be made after ten games or so of the season.
