Watchtowers to Light Up for Human Rights More than thirty towers and watchtowers will light up this Saturday (13th) for the second edition of “Talaies de Mallorca: Towers for defence of human rights”. The towers, which formed the island’s first line of defence and warning system in years gone by, will become visible once again claiming the region’s rich heritage while highlighting the issue of human rights in the midst of the refugee crisis. The lighting of the towers with smoke and light signals will be from 1pm to 6.15pm.
Our Day with the Hairy Bikers see page 7
The buildings to make up the momentous event are defence towers, watchtowers, castles and other monuments in different municipalities of the island. The list of participating heritage buildings has grown each day and this, the second year running, is looking to become quite an occasion. The Consell de Mallorca are heavily involved with this year’s event as the Minister

Culture, Francesc Miralles, told press, “We are at the forefront of the organization of this second event because it is a way to reinforce our commitment to the dignity of human rights and the denunciation of the crisis of the refugees… It is also an opportunity to maintain the coastal heritage that, after years of abandonment, needs firm action.” The Heritage Committee have recently restored four towers, one of which is the Alcudia Tower. The project is in the hands of a group of Professors from the IES Marratxí and members of the Balearic Society of Mathematics. Martí Mayol, the group’s spokesman, commented “it was a project initiated by a small group of people which could never have happened

Local News Bike Lane Break The bicycle lane parallel to the Artà Road that was to link Alcúdia and the public estate of Son Real (Santa Margalida) is to be incomplete as it passes through the municipality of Muro. Between s’Estany d’en Mama (currently known as “Llac de les Gavines”) and Sa Caseta des Capellans, there will be no bike path. This project was approved in 2013 and the government along with Councils of Alcudia, Muro and Santa Margalida were to pay for it. Alcúdia and Santa Margalida will still execute their part, but not Muro. The town is unable to install the safety railings that would separate the road with the bike lane because it passes through the Albufera. The Natural Park of Albufera was seeking compensation for the loss of 2,800sqm and to avoid the sides of the roads being packed with parked cars during the summer. The cost of the Muro project would be around €500k. Martí Fornés, the mayor of Muro, said that the Town Hall had dropped the project because, among other reasons, the deadline ends this year and there is no funding available.
Alcudia’s Can Ramis Changearound The multifunctional building of Can Ramis, which houses the Tourist Office and administration offices, will be changed around to give space to elderly residents of Alcudia. The council is planning a social room for the elderly, which will have a cafeteria and two adjoining rooms with mobile panels making the space more versatile.
Once the renovation work is completed, the current headquarters for the elderly, which now occupies a house located on the Calle Major (a few meters from the Town Hall) will move to the new facilities and its old building will go to host other municipal services.
exclusion areas marked by the Plan for the Regulation of Natural Resources (PORN) of the Serra de Tramuntana on the Ternelles estate, mainly Cala Castell. The study was handed to the judge to comply with a requirement of the Superior Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJB).
The reform project of the ground floor of Can Ramis will cost around €178,000 and the works will last about three months.
The different interpretation of the judicial rulings applied by the City Council and Ternelles property implies that both parties try to ensure the management of public visits to the emblematic ‘Pollencina’ estate. The society that manages the ‘possessió’ linked to the March family, already warned a few months ago that from this year authorization for visits would lie with them exclusively, which the council does not accept.
No Live Chicken Up the Pi On January 17, the first to arrive at the top of the Pi de Sant Antoni in Plaça Vella in Pollensa will not find the traditional live chicken trophy. This decision was made last year when Mayor Miquel Àngel March cast the deciding vote to stop the practice. A vote that did not find unanimity in the municipality. Many Pollencins of all political tendencies are still in favour of continuing with the tradition despite the express prohibition contained in the law of animal abuse and the penalty of €1,575 imposed by the Government in 2010. It will be one of the star themes of the ‘glosses’ this year.
Ternelles Access Rumbles On A new report from the Council of Pollensa has defended the access it manages to the Ternelles estate. The environmental report seeks to demonstrate to the TSJB that the public visits to Cala Castell and other sensitive areas are not harmful to the environment. It also aims to justify the legality of accessing the
Mayor March explained yesterday that the City continues to manage authorizations for twenty people a day, “In principle everything remains the same, although we have found that the property of the farm wants to open a transition period” to take control of public visits. March considers that Ternelles “is entitled to give permits for guided visits because the farm is his, but the authorization to access the road must be municipal.”
Coll de Siller Fire Conclusion News spread as quick as the fire itself. It was visible from miles around and the acrid smell thick in the air. The fire in the hills in Siller was on December 27th and spread to 79.5 hecatres of scrub land destroying pines, bushes and olive trees that got in its way. So large was the fire that it wasn’t completely out until 6pm the next day. Now, after two weeks, the Environment Officers have
just been able to confirm the cause. Tweeting on January 3rd, @AgentsMediAmb said that the slow and laborious task was requiring patience and prudence. On Janauary 9th, they tweeted that after studying all the data, they could determine that the fire was caused by a broken medium-voltage cable that sparked in the vegetation, the spark spread due to the strong winds of that night.
Clean Spring Water for Albufera The water from Fonts Ufanes will help improve the water quality of the Albufera Natural Park and the Ministry of Environment is now processing the project, which will be financed through the sustainable tourism tax. The idea is that the fresh water that comes down from the mountains, and bursts through the Ufanes fountains will reach the protected wet zone. The aim is to reduce the levels of salinization that the s’Albufera water zone currently suffers from. Currently, the great flow of water from the Fonts Ufanes that reaches s’Albufera (a large volume is filtered), ends at the Gran channel. To take advantage of this flow, the authorities want to recover the old aquifers of s’Albufera so that the mountain water is distributed throughout the park and improve the water quality. €135,000 of tourist tax will be used to the finance the work. The processing of the project is a complicated one, it has to be carried out by the councils of Muro and Sa Pobla, but it forms part of a larger project of the Consell to alleviate pressure from the tourist saturation seen in the summer months.

Hola! So the tree’s down, recycling finally cleared, presents put away and guests gone. But that does not mean hibernating. Sant Antoni’s is just round the corner. In my humble opinion this is THE best fiesta of the year and what’s more, it’s possible to have a whole week of it. The demonis in Pollensa on Saturday, in Sa Pobla on Tuesday and then the Pine in Puerto Pollensa or Pollensa on Wednesday. Love it. I’m also really excited to tell you about our upcoming appearance on the Hairy Biker’s Show, the Mediterranean Adventure. Read all about it on page 7! See you next time! Joanna

Progress on the Semi-Pedestrianization in Puerto Pollensa The second phase of the semipedestrianization of the first line in Puerto Pollensa has gone according to plan and the Council is confident that the section between The Roca Roundabout and Avenida Paris will be opened to traffic from mid-February. In the section closest to the port area, the paving stones are being placed and will be completed within two weeks, according to the
authorities who made a visit to the construction site this week with the architect, the municipal engineer and the construction manager. The cobblestones that have been laid are made of a material that, according to the technicians, will withstand the passage of heavy vehicles. Now the construction company has started laying the bike lane up to Llenaire and installing the wall that
separates the promenade from the beach. This will also be topped with stone. The stormwater drainage network has already been reinforced and the new drains are currently being installed. It is worth remembering that from May, the circulation of vehicles will be totally prohibited between Enginyer Roca and Paris Avenue between 6pm and 7am throughout the whole year.
Bus Station Progress Work has begun and progressing quickly on the new bus terminal in Puerto Pollensa. Part of the Project of Sustainable Mobility in Natural Areas and Beaches of Mallorca, the construction includes a pergola and public toilets, and will be completed in four months. Located behind the PAC, next to the swimming pool, the new station will reduce bus continued from front page

Sa Pobla’s Sant Antoni Sant Antoni’s is celebrated in villages across Mallorca but none more so than in Sa Pobla, where the big man himself — Sant Antoni — is the town’s Patron Saint. The huge celebrations date back to 1365. These days, on the eve of Sant Antoni’s, there are over 100 bonfires around the town and the residents dance with the Demonis, Gegantes and Caparrots until the early hours. Part of the fiesta falls to the Clamater, the elected town crier who will complete the Sant Antoni Mass with a
vehement and symbolic cry of ‘Visca Sant Antoni’ that stirs the collective feeling of Poblers towards their most loved annual party. The idea of having a ‘Clamater’ was introduced in 2003 by the late Alexandre Ballester. It refers to the time when the Poblers refused to deliver all the donations given in tribute to Sant Antoni to the friars. Having won the argument, at the end of the Mass of Completes of the year 1643, the poblers erupted in applause, whistles and cries of Visca Sant Antoni!

The Ximbomba Every country, every region has its own drum, Mallorca’s is the Ximbomba, in English, perhaps rumblepot is the best interpretation. It consists of a membrane stretched over a sound box. This can be any wide mouthed container, commonly an earthenware pot, and a long smooth stick stuck onto the membrane. To make the sound, you need to produce friction. In a ximbomba this is done by rubbing the stick with a wet hand. To alter the sound, the membrane may be depressed with the thumb while playing to vary the pitch. Historically in Spain, the ximbomba is associated with the winter solstice and in Mallorca it has become custom to play it during carnival and the Sant Antoni Festival. The sound it makes is quite unique and completely indeterminate. The mission is to produce a rhythmic accompaniment to songs of the fiesta, whether it’s for Christmas, Sant Antoni or Carnival. images courtesy of Llobera Llar i Decoracio, Pollença

Our Day with the Hairy Bikers
Fiesta Food: The Eel Fair in Sa Pobla I love to show people around Pollensa and pass on all the little snippets of information I’ve picked up while living here. So, when two BBC producers got in touch, I was thrilled to help with their new show: The Hairy Bikers’ Mediterranean Adventure. It also meant getting together with three lovely friends and welcoming Si King and Dave Myers into the kitchen. Together we cooked a Coca Mallorquina. That was last summer and soon our five-minute slot (or 15-seconds of fame, who knows?) will be broadcast in February.
We know that Sa Pobla is the place to be for Sant Antoni’s, but did you also know about the star dish that is a major player during the festivities? The Eel forms the basis of a gastronomic fair that is part of the Sant Antoni celebrations, this year is the 9th edition and 15 local restaurants are participating. Espinagada amb Anguiles, a rectangular empanada-style dish, is the most typical but now you can see eel being
cooked in many different forms, from stewed to fried, with eggs or tomato, fideus or rice, you can try it any way you like.
Having arrived by boat the night before from Menorca, the chefs came over for lunch the next day. Their stop in Pollensa was brief but we had time to sit and chat about life on the island, the food we eat and our thoughts on the dreaded Brexit, among other things, before they set off to bike along the beautiful Sa Calobra road. The series started at the beginning of this month and will see the two chefs travel around Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, France and Spain.
Traditionally the eels are from the Albufera but in fisherman can only catch them with traditional fishing gear, meaning they cannot keep up with the demand. So, the fish is brought in from Valencia. In the past, residents and their visitors have consumed around four tonnes of eel during the two-week period. The IX Mostra Gastronòmica de s’Anguila started on the 7th and continues until the 21st January.

The Mallorquinista Mini Crisis
Real Mallorca endured something of a mini crisis according to the local press in the run up to the Christmas break. They drew all of the last four of their games in the end of the first half of the season. This needs to be put into perspective as the club still remained unbeaten during the season and were seven points clear at the top of the league in front of Villareal B. However, following on from the season-ending cruciate ligament injury suffered by Ferran Giner at Olot, worse was to follow in the game at Badalona. Star striker Lago Junior limped off during the game and the diagnosis is a partial cruciate ligament injury. He does not require surgery, but he has to have the knee totally immobilized for a period of time and then extensive physiotherapy. The prognosis is that he should be fit to return to action in approximately three months. Head coach Moreno has been scouring the market in the January transfer window and has signed 22-year-old winger Alvaro Bustos from Nastic Taragona. He is a left winger and a Spanish international up to the under 20s level. He has suffered two serious injuries in his short career but is by all accounts fully fit and raring to go. A striker is also on Moreno’s shopping list and there is plenty of time to secure one. In the home game against Peralda last Sunday Mallorca fans suffered throughout a tedious nil-nil draw against a team in the relegation zone. The arrival of Bustos as a second half substitute was the only bright spot in an insipid contest. Mallorca’s next game is away at Pena Deportiva on the 14th January followed by the eagerly awaited derby at home to

Atletico Balears on the 21st January with a 12 noon kick off. Atletico were soundly beaten by Villareal B last Sunday and Mallorca’s lead in the league is now down to five points.
Badalona 1-1 Real Mallorca This was a tough game for the islanders not least because of the serious injury to Lago Junior. In the 23rd minute the aptly named Maestro scored with a brilliant shot from outside the area. That was the first goal that Mallorca had conceded in 420 minutes and for the first time this season the team went into half time a goal behind. In the final minute fullback Joan Sastre equalized with a shot that crept over the line. An unlikely scorer but the unbeaten run continued.
Real Mallorca 2-2 Zaragoza B The bottom club in the league came to the Son Moix stadium and surprised everyone with the quality of their play. To be fair the islanders looked like they had run out of gas and were ready for the Christmas break. Goalkeeper Manolo Reina has been in outstanding form all season but in the 38th minute he dropped a routine cross at the feet of Nieto who gratefully accepted the present. Substitute Cedric equalized on the 75th minute and then set up the move ten minutes later for Lopez to put the islanders in front. Sadly with seconds left on the club Zaragoza launched a counter attack and Kike equalized.
