Lions Success
At the end of last month, the North Mallorca Lions held their second Movie Night. It was another great success and with ticket sales and a raffle,
€600 was raised for their cause of providing immediate help for the victims of domestic abuse. During the course of the evening some
announcements were made. The Lions are working on an initiative to open a ‘safe house’ for women. Permission has

already been received for the building and construction and the first phase will begin soon. There followed a presentation of no less than £1,025 from the North Down Rotary Club of Ireland. The club chose the North Mallorca Lions as fans of North Mallorca and wanted to support the work that the Lions are doing. It’s a superb start to a fantastic project. If you would like to get more involved or would like more information about upcoming events, get in touch with Susan Mackay, 636 914 425.
Fast Ferries Baleària is adding to its Mallorca-Menorca service with a fast link from Alcúdia to Ciutadella for just €14.75 return (with a resident discount). This will make it four trips per day with travellers now choosing between the fast ferry or standard ferry service. The 81m ‘Jaume II’ navigates at 35 knots and can take up to 600 passengers. It offers armchair seating and has a cafe, shop and space for dogs. Access is enabled for those with reduced mobility. On 1st June, Baleària will begin their daily connection between Palma and Ibiza with a high-speed line for a round-trip price of €15.50. The journey takes 2 hours. Another ferry company, the new Transmediterránea will connect Palma and Ibiza daily in two and a half hours and for just €8 for residents in the Balearic Islands.
Energy Suppliers Sued Pollença town hall has announced it will sue the energy company Audax for cutting public lighting. One
night last week, cuts in the electricity supply meant street lighting in certain areas of Pollensa, the port and Cala Sant Vicente were off. The Council placed it with lawyers as the cut of an essential public service, ie street lighting cannot be suspended. (In the same way, sanitary services, water supply, police services cannot be cut.) Audax claimed there were unpaid bills, which the council say “is absolutely false… essential public services cannot be touched in any way, and we have communicated this to the service company and to the supplier,”a council spokesman added.
Dirty Water Problems: Alcudia The Ministry of Territory has opened sanctioning proceedings against the developer who poured water from a construction site into the sea at Es Clot in Alcúdia and has ordered the stoppage, not only of the spill, but of the construction itself. The builders were working on a basement in the area and pumping seawater that flows into the space, which is below the water table. This pumping is allowed but the water is not being filtered sufficiently and the deadline has passed. The Council of Alcúdia requested the Ministry to intervene, one day after the residents of the area protested against the brown water spill. Perhaps the biggest concern was the damage it could cause to the ecosystem; dead crabs washed up and mud accumulated on the seabed. Territory inspectors collected samples of the water and verified that at least one of the pumps
was still pouring the liquid even though the spillage is totally prohibited during the bathing season that began on 30th March.
Pollensa Recently Carrer Timo in Puerto Pollensa has had issues with flooding of sewage water and the neighbours have had enough. What’s more the water is spilling into the wetland of La Gola, an area of spectacular ornithological diversity. The neighbours suffer, with not just the sewage extraction trucks (that work from 7am throughout the day to alleviate a problem in the short-term), but they also suffer with the odour that follows. Residents say that the work on the frontline meant dirty water pipes were modified and since, the extraction motors are unable to absorb the increasingly saturated flow of wastewater.
Gelats Valls It has not gone unnoticed that the ice-cream kiosk in the Old Town of Pollensa, or the ice cream parlour in Puerto Pollensa are not open yet. TOTN is waiting to talk to the people behind Pollensa’s much-loved ice cream makers but in the meantime, it seems Gelats Valls is not closing entirely, just changing a little. While the company has announced to the council that it is dissolving, it has also sought licenses for somewhere new in the Old Town. This means that they will not be opening the kiosk this year—they can’t seek permission while in the process of dissolving the company— and the council has asked them to remove it from the square.
With so much buzz about the reports, it should be clear that this decision has not been forced by anyone, the council has not ordered for the kiosk to be closed. The decision for change within the company has been made by them. So it is not the end for the Gelats Valls but just the beginning of something new. More of which, we hope will feature in the next issue of TOTN.
The Ternelles Saga As expected, the owners of the Ternelles estate, the March Family, have filed an appeal to annul the TSJB’s last judicial decision that upheld the council’s right to maintain the public’s access to the sea at Cala Castell. The estate wants a prohibition of access in place until the Council of Pollensa has adapted its urban planning to the Pla d’Ordenació de Recursos Naturales (PORN) that limits public access in the exclusion zones of the Serra (there are two in Ternelles) for conservation reasons. The recent ruling from the TSJB confirmed the existence of a right of way in favour of the council and that the council should be the authority that grants access permits to the hikers, without the need for them to be accompanied by a guide. However, the Ternelles Estate know that the (unfortunately named) PORN must prevail over these local regulations and the TSJB did include a clause in its ruling that, if in three months the City Council has not collected the environmental documentation to initiate the adaptation to the PORN, it will suspend the servitude of the Ternelles route to the sea.

Hola! It’s busy up north this fortnight! With the Feria d’Abril and Sepia Fair, the Wine Fair and a spot of cultural book-type Sant Jordi action, there’s no shortage of entertainment. There’s also some quirky stuff too, the gladiator show in the Pollentia Roman Theatre promises to be a bit different and film night at Club Pollensa is a great opportunity to see something you wouldn’t ordinarily choose. Share your stories and pictures of what you’ve seen and got up to at Facebook.com/ TalkoftheNorthMallorca! See you in two weeks! A Taste of Asia in Pollensa Local association in Pollensa, ONIT, held it’s first ever Asian cultural exchange day at the Claustre last weekend. Called the Yayoi Matsuri Festival of Flowers, this multicultural festival focused on Japanese, Chinese and Korean culture. Visitors could try oriental
street food, join in with some k-pop dance exhibitions, origami workshops and buy ‘friki’ products. Genuine Asian craft and arts as well as comics and clothes added authenticity while the North Mallorca Lions provided some amazing sweet treats!
Cat Shootings in El Vila The newly formed organization, ‘Cat Protection Pollensa’ has highlighted a very serious case of cats being injured in the La Vila neighbourhood of Puerto Pollensa. A controlled colony of cats is watched over by the organization who say three cats are missing while three others were seriously harmed by pellet guns. The most serious was Ella who was shot in the chest and a pellet entered her lung. The other two were shot in the face. One of them, Timmy, hasn’t been seen again since being released back to the colony after his treatment, and Princess is still to receive treatment for the gun pellet that was lodged in her face. This colony is well taken care of by Cat Protection Pollensa – an Association created to control the local cat population in a humane way by implementing a “trap, neuter and return programme” in the Pollensa area. All the colony cats under their care are also vaccinated and fed regularly by a small team of dedicated volunteers who struggle to raise funds to pay for food and vets bills. Spokesperson, Coloma Jaume, told local press she is “perplexed by the actions of the person responsible for these events, because they are animals that don’t cause damage, on the contrary, they serve to control rodents… not
only from hunting them but simply the scent of the cats mean rats are deterred and look for more distant places.” She added that only one neighbour has complained about the colony and he has since installed water jets that harmlessly spray any cats when they enter his garden. The Council is working with the charity and providing funds to castrate the cats in order to avoid uncontrolled overpopulation, but as yet no one has been caught for shooting the cats with a pellet gun. Cat Protection Pollensa are a not for profit organization and welcome anyone who feels they may be able to volunteer their time to help. They would also welcome any donations to help with this project. They also hope someone will come forward and give Ella a good home where she can recover. Please visit www.catprotectionpollensa.com for more information or find Cat Protection Pollensa on Facebook.

Food & Drink Fira del Vi 2018
Josep Bibiloni, President of the Associacio Vi Primitiu Pollenca led last week’s presentation of the 2018 Fira del Vi, which will be held on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd April at its usual location, the Claustre. This year will be the 15th edition of the fair and, Bibiloni noted, there have been a fair few changes in both quality and image of Mallorca wines. So, for this year’s fair, the space will be have a more commercial and functional feel, while the backdrop of the beautiful Claustre building will do its part too. At this edition of the fira, there will be 39 wineries, with are two new exhibitors; Virrei of Cala Pi and Can Xanet of Pollensa. Mayor Miquel Àngel March congratulated the local wine association for the 15th anniversary and for having created a reference in the world of wine in the town. The fair is an

Sepia Fair 2018
The Sepia Fair is firmly established on Puerto Alcudia’s cultural calendar and holds an important role as one of the Port Town’s attractions. As Mayor Antoni Mir pointed out, the fair contributes to the revitalization of this part of Alcudia. This year, 24 establishments will be participating in the restaurant marquee; throughout the rest of town there are another 16 restaurants all offering special sepia dishes; and there will be another 21 nautical exhibitors at the fair. See the full agenda on the What’s On pages.
economic and cultural asset for Pollensa, a real bonus that can’t be ignored. He added that this the wine fair has become an “essential meeting for professionals and the general public who have an interest in wine…” and with each fair, there is, “more quality, more interest and more visitors.” Dolors Domínguez, president of the Association of Traders of Pollensa, introduced a new draw where customers shopping in one of the association’s 70 stores will have the chance to draw tickets for the event when they make their purchase. The Fira del Vi will open on the Saturday at 10am and close at 8:30pm (one hour before the closing of the box office). On the Sunday it will open from 10am to 2pm (one hour before the box office closes). Entrance is €12, of which €4 will be credit to buy wine at the fair. In the bag there is a tasting glass, information booklet and pen for your wine tasting notes.

Party Season! established in 1996
The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm.
Some Mallorquin families still carry on the long tradition of “Trencar Olles” at birthday parties and other celebrations. An old cooking pot is filled with sweets or coins and paper confetti and is tied up on a rope. Kids wearing a blindfold try to break the pot with a long stick and when they succeed there is a hair raising scrummage among the pottery shards for the prizes. This very old tradition predates the more modern piñata, which although usually thought of as Mexican, has its roots more recently in Europe but originally in China. Who knew?! Although piñatas these days are just for fun, historians believe that the early Chinese version involved a pottery cow or ox, which was covered in coloured paper and filled with five different types of seeds. It was a new year tradition associated with bringing good weather for the growing season. After being broken to spread the seeds, the pot remains were burnt and the ashes kept for good luck
The tradition came to Europe in the 14th century where it became part of the Christian celebration of Lent. The first Sunday in Lent used to be known in Spain as ‘Piñata Sunday’. The word piñata comes from the Italian “pignatta” meaning “earthenware cooking pot”. The European piñata tradition was taken to Mexico in the 16th century by the Conquistadores. Although there was a similar Aztec tradition which commemorated the birthday of Huitzilopochtli. Priests would decorate a clay pot with coloured feathers. When the pot was broken, the contents would fall to the feet of the idol as an offering. So the next time the piñata appears at another one of those birthday parties, take comfort in the rich cultural history your little one is partaking in. It’s not all sweets and plastic treats, you know.

12th Pollensa Half Marathon Last weekend, Pollensa hosted the 12th edition of its annual half marathon. Approved by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation, the closed course is fast with no real incline, so it is suitable for athletes of all categories. Totalling almost 1,000 participants, runners from all over the world took part including many from the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Argentina as well as many Spaniards from the mainland.
Among the international athletes who ran was Carles Castillejo—four-time Olympian and previous champion of Spain in various distances including the marathon. He was strong from the beginning and by the 5th kilometre was out front until he crossed the line in just 1:07.08. In the women’s category, islander Sebastiana Llabres won with a time of 1:21.52. In the 10km, Lisa Griffiths was the overall winner in the women’s category, running the distance in just 44
minutes, 36 seconds, 1.5 minutes faster than second placed runner who is also 15 years younger. Well done Lisa!

three precious points which keeps Mallorca six points clear at the top of Segunda B Group 3.
April with a home game against Olot the following Sunday 22nd.
So how does promotion work ? Each team is seeded based on its finishing position within its group, so there are four x 1, four x 2, four x 3 and four x 4s. The teams are then paired in a two-game total series as follows. The 1s are drawn against each other, as are the 3s, while the 2s face the 4s. The two home and away match ups between the 1s are direct qualifiers, the two winners are automatically promoted to La Segunda. The two losers however are NOT eliminated as they join the six winners from 2/4 and 3/3 in another play off. These eight teams then enter two more home and away rounds and the two survivors then go up. The four group winners have a huge advantage, they get one free home and away shot at promotion and even if they lose they can still be promoted with two straight wins. Clear enough?? Mallorca have a difficult trip to Elche this coming Sunday 15th
Valencia Mestalla 2 -1 Real Mallorca The visit to Valencia’s B team was always going to be difficult and even more so after Mallorca’s recent run of poor form. Head coach Moreno made a number of changes, opting for a midfield trio of Salva Sevilla, Damia Sabater and ex-QPR midfielder Faurlin. The system didn’t work at all well and after only 16 minutes Joan Sastre committed an unnecessary foul in the penalty area and Jordi Sanchez slotted home easily. The home side have an average age of just 19 years and they ran rings round the islanders for large parts of the game and after 26 minutes Villalba scored a brilliant solo effort. Prats and Abdon came on in the second half and began to exert some influence as the home side tired. With 15 minutes to go Sevilla’s free kick was deflected in to give the islanders some hope. Lago had a late penalty appeal waved away by the referee.
