An Ideal Forest
E!
Alcudia’s Townhall is collaborating with the photographer Enric Xavier Company or ‘Kaiko’ to mark World Environment Day on June 5th. Kaiko has already held two workshops last week in the library of Can Torró. The workshop was called “HojAnimals” and children made animals from the leaves they found. The objective was to introduce the children to the animal and plant wealth of forests and raise their awareness of how important the forests are. The photo exhibition began after Kaiko visited about 144 forests on the mainland of Spain. It features, two large format canvases and two cubes hanging from the ceiling of the Auditorium. The exhibition is interactive and visitors are invited to write about their ideal forest. Runs until 25th June.

New Bus Station Update The Government’s Sustainable Mobility Plan to promote access to natural beaches and public transport was in action today when Puerto Pollensa’s new bus station – the gateway to Formentor – was finally signed. Part of the same project, Inca will have a new station as a gateway to the Tramuntana. The Minister of Land, Energy and Mobility, Marc Pons, and the Minister for the Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries, Vicenç Vidal, visited Puerto Pollensa
this week to present their new project and Mayor of Pollensa, Miquel Àngel March, signed the agreement with Marc Pons for the construction of the station, on municipal land. The Environment Minister stressed that the sustainable tourism tax will be used to offset the impact of tourism and this project is an example. It will also be used to facilitate access to places like the Tramuntana mountains or beaches like the public estate of Son Real, using
public transport to enhance “access to these places in a more sustainable and safer way”. The Sustainable Mobility Project will promote the natural beaches of Mallorca, by providing public transport to visit natural areas of special interest and reduce the pressure from private vehicles.
The main areas of action are the Sierra de Tramuntana, the Formentor peninsula, the estate of Son Real and Varques Cala Mondragó Natural Park. The project includes the construction

Local News New Deixalleria A bigger and better Rubbish Tip is located on the industrial estate behind of Eroski on the main road between Pollensa and the Port. Actual address is C/ Picapedrer, 39. The new facility meets all standards of waste treatment and, unlike the other; concrete pavement has a waterproof and wastewater treatment, among other improvements. There will also be a series of electric compactors that will improve the service. The project was first conceived in 2009 and was approved in the previous legislature, with a cost of €600,000 funded 50% by Emser and 50% by a joint venture. Mayor of Pollensa, Miquel Àngel March, announced the creation of two or three mini dumps, the first in the Old Town the second in the Port and the third yet to be announced. These mini facilities will be enclosed with CCTV and employees to supervise. The first site in the Old Town is where the recycling containers are placed at the roundabout of Can Berenguer, which have received criticism for giving a bad image at the entrance of the town. The second will be located in the Llenaire area.
Solar Panel Subsidy The Balearic authorities, CAIB (Comunidad Autonomo de las Illes Balears), made an annoucement this week stating their intention to subsidise Solar Panels for private individuals, non-profit organizations, companies and business associations, for the second year running although this year the invitation is open to detached houses that are not connected to the main electricity supply.
The amount available for funding this year is a total of €400,048 and is co-financed with European funds. It could mean a discount of 40-50%. The deadline for submitting your application is the last week of August.
Caves in Campanet The management in charge of the caves of Campanet has decided to offer a discount on entrance tickets for all those interested in visiting them on June 6. Visitors will pay 10% less than the normal ticket price. The occasion is the World Day of the Caves and the Subterranean World.
Calle Bot Petition Success You may remember in the 4th May edition that residents and workers based along Calle Bot in Puerto Pollensa had petitioned the local government to reverse their decision to make the street two-way rather than one-way which it has been for years. A vote held at the last plenary saw the decision overturned. The flip flop has not added to the mayor’s popularity giving way to criticism for making a unilateral decision in the first place, Tomeu Cifre of Tots per Pollensa said that, “The meeting witnessed another misconduct resulting from improvization and arrogance.”
More Mayoral Drama The Mayor of Pollensa, Miquel Àngel March (Junts Avançam), faced a motion of no confidence after seeking approval for the 2017 budget.
Only the seven members of the government team (Junts Avança and UMP) supported the management of the mayor, while the opposition as a whole chose to vote against it. After the plenary vote, the accounts automatically received the initial visa, and the mayor and his team will run office for a month while the opposition files its motion of no confidence. This has its own problems, it would mean Tots per Pollença and Alternativa, two parties of opposite ends of the political spectrum, working together. Further, the anti-transfer law invalidates the vote of the non-attached councillor, Martí Roca (formerly of El Pi). These two factors play in favour of the government team. If, as expected, within 30 days the opposition is unable to agree, then the government team will regain full functions and this year’s budgets will be definitively approved without public exposure. However, more than anything this plenary debate showed the level of political upheaval at the Townhall, there were some very harsh interventions against the mayor, including a demand for resignation from the PP delegate, David Alonso. Marina Llobera, from Alternativa per Pollença said that “They have angered the leftist party that could support them and have united the right, which was divided”. In the government’s defence, councillor Miquel Àngel Sureda responded with a series of projects that have been carried out during these two years of mandate.
History Day in Cala San Vicente Last Sunday saw the Diada Prehistorica, at Cala Sant Vicente, which centred around the Plaza de Sant Vicenç with full day of activity including an artesan market, a slingshot workshop, pottery workshop for children, reenactments, fun shows for kids and other activities.
Most of the visitors were residents of the town but organizers, who plan to hold another next year, told TOTN that this is accessible to nonCatalan speakers as most activity was demonstrative such as the recreation of the funeral and the comical sketch.
La Patrona 2017 Starts Now! It’s June people, that can mean only one thing… yes the biggest election is nigh and canvassing for votes will begin soon. The protagonists for this year’s Patrona are to be nominated between 1-16 June. If you want to be Joan Mas, your birth year has to be before 1990, registered in Pollensa and you have to speak Catalan. If you and your pals want to be Dragut and his Lietenent and Abanderat you also all must have been born before 1990, and registered in Pollensa. For the four men of the Ajuntament Vella, you have up to 1982 as your birth year. Good luck!

¡Hola! It’s June already. The first two weeks of this month in Alcudia and Pollensa are relatively quiet so we can look outside for the firas and fiestas. Of course there is no shortage of these. Selva, Sa Pobla and Campanet feature on this week’s What’s On page, so there’s still something to go out and experience. Who knew that myrtle or the humble potato could be such crowd pullers? Hasta luego! Joanna

New Tourist Office in P. Pollensa New School in Alcudia Last week saw an agreement signed between the Townhall of Alcúdia and the Balearic Government for a new primary school (CEIP) in the municipality of Alcúdia. The construction will initially be funded by the town council, which is responsible for tendering the works, with the final funding from the Ministry of Education. This is the first agreement of this kind to be signed this term, the objective of this initiative is to respond to the educational needs of each municipality. In Alcúdia, according to the population data, a
trend of strong growth is detected. This growth paired with a lack of adequate infrastructure to respond to the existing demand, makes the new school crucial. Currently the municipality has the CEIP: Norai, Puerta des Moll, s’Albufera and s’Hort des Fassers as well as Nuestra Señora de la Consolacion. In total, all the schools have 1,796 students, of which 575 are in early years centres and 1,221 are in primary school. The new CEIP will have six classes for infants and 12 for primary and will accommodate a total of 450 students.
The little Tourist Office by the taxi stand in Puerto Pollensa has been closed ready for reform. In the meantime, the office is now on the main road down to the port, C/ Joan XXIII, 19, opposite Eroski. Its opening hours will remain the same, MondayFriday 9am-8pm, Saturdays 9am-4pm. Closed on Sundays. Winter hours will start on 1st November.
New Bus Station Update continued from front page of new bus stops, signs, and parking for cars outside the protected areas. The new central bus stop in Puerto Pollensa will see the shuttle to Formentor from 2018 as well as the TIB Pollensa-Inca-Palma and the Alcudia-Can Picafort-Levant service. It will improve the bus services that connect the bays of Alcudia and Pollensa with the Sierra de Tramuntana. The new station is a joint project with the Council and is framed within the Sustainable Mobility Project funded by the Sustainable Tourism Promotion Plan.
The maximum total cost of the work for Puerto Pollensa is €419,959.41 and will be funded by the Mallorca Transport Consortium. The Council will contribute 9.525% of the final amount to a maximum of €40,000. We asked Miquel Sureda of the council how they will
make up the parking once the bus station is up and running. He confirmed that the parking behind the sports centre will be opened up as will parking behind the church. The council is also in talks regarding parking in Pollensa. So, despite what they say, the future is bright!

Local Art Dionís Bennàssar It’s really no surprise that the beautiful landscapes of the Tramuntana Mountains and the seascapes of Cala Sant Vicente, Formentor and Puerto Pollensa should be such an inspiration to painters around the world. Indeed, artists have moved to Mallorca since the beginning of the 20th century. Writers and poets from Kingsley Amis to Jorge Luis Borges and Robert Graves spent time here and artists such as Joan Miro and Coll Bardolet lived here. More locally though is the Pollensa School of Painting with its own world famous artists. Anglada Camarasa was one of the first international
artists to be drawn by the North’s dramatic landscape. He moved here from Paris in 1914 bringing his brilliant pupil, Tito Cittadini, with him. Together they created the Pollensa School of Painting and Pollensa-born painter, Dionis Bennassar later joined them. Bennassar was born in the town in 1904, from an early age his talent for drawing was clear. Working by day as a mechanic he went to Palma for art classes but he broke free from the classicism that dominated and developed his own concepts. With his determination to be a successful painter, in time,
he dedicated his life to his art and focused on the beautiful surroundings of his hometown. “With his brushes, he brought a new dimension to Mallorcan painting characterized by a grandiose vision of nature, vibrant colours and long and free brushstrokes.” His exhibition in Palma followed by positive reviews consolidated his career and he was able to buy a house and live as a professional artist. “Dionís Bennàssar displayed his great mastery in his numerous exhibitions. He was one of the best landscape painters,

opened up a new pathway in the language of painting, and as a drawer and caricaturist he showed a quick and certain sense of perception.” After his sudden death in December 1967, several tributes were paid to him from across Spain and in 1981 he became and Illustrious Son of Pollensa. Now you can see his major works in the exhibition Dionís Bennàssar 50 Anys Després (marking 50 years since his death) at the Esglesia del Convent de Sant Domingo until 18th June. The exhibition is open from 10.30-2pm and 5-9pm. Quotes from the article by Gudi Moragues Jaulin Du Seutre on www. museudionisbennassar.com.

The Sport of the North
Wonder Woman Iris Schunke Anyone who knows Iris will know the incredible transition this formidable lady has made. A busy working mum with two children and two jobs, Iris knew she had to make changes. Six years on, Iris is now running and running and running. Her most recent race was the immense Cami de Cavalls in Menorca. TOTN caught up with her last week.
How would you encourage others? Go ahead,
When did you start the fitness regime?
What is your mantra? What keeps you going on a 39km race? My inspiration was my dad.
About 5-6 years ago I just started walking with a group of other mums along the main road between Pollensa and the Port. Back then the objective was losing weight. The next step was when my friend and colleague Sonia convinced me to do my first event — the 5km Nordic Walk in the Mitja Marato in Pollensa. By then I had lost some weight but since then I’ve lost an awful lot more. I started with a high protein plan (the Dukan diet) but now I just focus on eating healthily with the odd treats at the weekend.
What inspired you to do it?
Sonia was a great support and very encouraging. Once I got started I found running addictive, it’s like a drug! I always feel like I want to do more, to push myself even more. Walking stopped being enough and I enjoyed the challenge of changing from walking to running. Later, I joined Grup Correm. Running with a group is really motivating and I run with them when it fits in, which isn’t always easy. Also, I get so many messages from people and when I see people on the street they come and talk to me, all the support means so much.
Are you ever intimidated by better, faster athletes? I joined Grup Correm three years ago. I was never intimidated exactly, I just knew I wanted to be part of the group. At the beginning, when I was always the last one, I did worry about holding them up, but they are kind, and “they never leave anyone behind”. It’s a group and that’s the main point. They’re happy to share experience and knowledge and I’ve met some great friends from it.
whatever sport, just do something and get fit. Even if it’s hard, over time it gets easier and when you finish, your mind feels so much more open. It is a great way to get out all the negative feelings and be more positive.
He passed away just before I started this six years ago but he always said to me, “You can do it” and that’s what I focused on while I was running…
What are your running highlights?
That has to be my first half marathon, in Palma. I then did the Pollensa half three weeks later —I just wanted to do it in Palma first where no one knows me! Then most recently I completed the Mallorca Desert 23km from Colonya Sant Pere to Puerto Alcudia. 95% of the course is on sand and it is hard but I loved it! The Cami de Cavalls in Menorca is the longest so far. 39km, it’s exhausting, the terrain is quite challenging but it was one of the big ticks on my list.
What’s next? Anymore goals? I’m running the
Great South Run in Southampton – 18km. And of course there is the Trail from Soller to Pollensa. I swim twice a week and run two or three times with a long run at the weekend. I’ll keep training and see how I am when the time comes. At the moment anything feels possible!
If you feel inspired checkout Facebook.com/grupCorrem and get running!

Sword of Damocles Following the 0-0 draw at home to Numancia last Sunday the Sword of Damocles is well and truly hanging by a thread over the Son Moix Stadium in Palma as Real Mallorca faceup to the likelihood of relegation to the wasteland of the Spanish Third Division. 15,000 fans turned up to support the team and they were encouraged by the news that Tenerife, coached by former Mallorca captain Pep Luis Marti, had done them a huge favour by winning at Alcorcon. The stage was set for a lifeline home win and in the early minutes it was apparent that Numancia had set out their stall for a draw which would give them the point that they needed to ensure their safety from relegation. To coin the Jose Mourinho phrase the visitors parked the bus in front of their goal. From the outset they used every possible tactic to waste time including some almost comical feigning of injuries. Despite this, Mallorca should have had enough guile to secure a win and they started brightly. On reflection they huffed and puffed without creating any real chances of note. Thierry Moutinho was substituted at half time and a nearby fan remarked sardonically that no one noticed that he had been on the pitch for 45 minutes. Moutinho is possibly the most frustrating player to pull on the red shirt. He scored two outstanding goals at Sevilla Athletic and laid on the winner the previous week for Brandon. He has some serious talent without any application whatsoever. He should take a look at young Serbian midfielder Sasa Zdjelar (known as Sasha as no one can pronounce his surname) who has an amazing attitude. He wins the ball after constantly harassing the opposition and passes the ball to a team mate. Every team needs a water carrier as defensive midfield players are known and he carries out the role perfectly. After 57 minutes he made his first and only bad pass that did not reach a colleague. He constantly fed passes to Brandon who tends to over elaborate instead of moving the ball on. Brandon was substituted by Dalmau and striker Lekic was also introduced. Clearly the craft and
experience of Culio was needed but he remained on the bench and in the press conference head coach Sergio continuously shrugged his shoulders when questioned about his tactics. He looked like a man resigned to relegation. Mallorca travel to already relegated Mirandes next Sunday. The islanders are three points from safety and the final game is at home to Getafe the following weekend. The sword may already have fallen by then.
Real Mallorca 1-0 Almeria Mallorca started the match at a breakneck speed and won nine corners in the first half alone. Lago Junior and Brandon played together in the vanguard and caused the visitors no end of problems. Sasha and Alex Vallejo ruled the midfield imperiously and in the 33rd minute Moutinho played a wonderful pass into the path of Brandon who curled an immaculate shot into the corner of the net. The islanders dominated the game throughout but were unable to add to their tally. Sergi introduced central defender Ansotegi with 15 minutes to go to shore up the defence. There were a few chewed nails but the team held out for three vital points.
