Lluc-Pollensa Walk Open The Consell de Mallorca has finally reopened the path along the Ca na Borrassa estate in Pollensa. For years this 87m-long path meant that the old road between Lluc and Pollensa was impossible to pass. The route is recognized by the Consell as a public path and in March 2012 it was agreed they would recover the original route. In July, the Consell installed temporary barriers while the Ca na Borrassa estate was

secured. They had to break the locks of the property that prevented the free passage by Ca na Borrassa, property of the family of the ex-mayor and current leader of the opposition, Tomeu Cifre Ochogavía. For the last 6 weeks the farm has remained closed while work was carried out to protect the livestock on the estate. Last week access was finally opened and signposts identifying the Dry Stone

Walk to which this ancient road belongs have been placed. President of the Consell de Mallorca, Miquel Ensenyat told press it was
a “day to be happy” for the reopening of a public road. “After ten years we return the Mallorquins a part of their own heritage,” he said.
Frontline News from Puerto Pollensa Nine companies located both on the island and in the peninsula have submitted their tender for the second phase of the frontline work in Puerto Pollensa. The pedestrianization project, which will conclude the work begun during the first phase, has been put out to tender for a maximum amount of €2.03m. image courtesy of Council of Pollensa
Unlike the bidding process for the first phase, the current government team ‘pollencí’ (Junts Avança and UMP) are aiming to assume absolute control of the works, exercising project management, so they can “avoid the problems” that arose after the tender of the first phase, realized in the last legislature and executed during the winter 2015-1016, by a construction company that was “chosen by simple auction” and that “caused many problems during the development of the works”. continued on page 2

The second phase of the project will consist of paving part of the road to allow pedestrian use, improving the pavement and wall that separates the beach from the promenade, separating the bicycle lane and installing new garden areas and furniture.
Wastewater Plant Debate The GOB has sided with the council of Santa Margalida in rejecting Government plans for the new water purifier in Can Picafort. In a statement, the environmental organization called to resume the dialogue between the local council and Government for a new solution, claiming that the real victim in the current agreement is the environment. The problem is the wastewater of Can Picafort and Play de Muro (which is sent to the treatment plant, located partially inside the Albufera) cannot handle the amount of waste which creates frequents spills. The proposed solution is a new sewage treatment plant in Can Picafort with an marine outfall. The municipality of Santa Margalida has opposed the plans and now the GOB has joined them, calling for the “elimination of the planned outfall… We believe that new purification facilities should no longer be allowed to enter the sea, which has obvious risks… the Bay of Alcúdia is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas by virtue of its posidonia meadows.”
Walking Group Protest The Pro-Camins Público i Oberts organization publicly criticized the problems that
continue to exist on the path between Puerto Pollensa and Cala Carbó (Cala Sant Vicenç) by the Coll de Síller, a route they state, is documented as public. During their series of protest walks, the group claimed problems of passage still remain in this particular path as well as other routes that are considered public. The platform claims that a “clear walk” between the Port and Cala Sant Vicenç is possible, as well as a solution for the stretches of the old Lluc road that are not yet passable. It also requires the “free passage” through Ternelles and to conclude the problems of passage through the roads included in the municipal inventory.
A Step Forward in the Cabling Dilemma As reported in TOTN a while ago the laying of a new high voltage electric cable has caused much debate as it would be within walking distance of the Norai public school, the municipal escoleta and the health centre of Alcudia; it provoked a great social alarm. For this reason, alternative routes that took the cable away from the urban centre were investigated but were discarded due to the high cost of €2.5 that was to be paid for by the Town Council. Now, the Government has authorized the definitive route that runs in a straight line from Calle Teodor Canet to Plaza de la Quarentena which is land owned by the Port Authority. This has resulted in threeway negotiations between the council, Red Electrica and the Port Authority. Discussions were based
on how they would work together and the annual fee for using Port Authority land. After negotiating, it appears that the three parties will cooperate so that the fees can be avoided. Either way, Mayor Mir has said that “it is preferable” to pay €1,950 a year in fees rather than laying the cable near schools and a health centre, because of the associated health risks of the high voltage. The mayor also added that the work must begin before December 31st or the promotor could lose its EU subsidies.
Fira d’Alcudia The Mayor of Alcudia, Antoni Mir, and the Councillor for Fairs and Markets, Catalina Juan Pericàs, presented the poster for the 29th edition of the Alcudia Fair that will be held on the 29th and 30th September and 1st October. This year there will be for the first time a Roman Market on the cami de Ronda. The Councillor for fairs and markets, Catalina Juan Pericàs, presented a whole series of activities, workshops, shows, gastronomic shows, crafts, as well as tents with companies, shops and products of the Islands. For full itinerary see the What’s On page and www.TOTNMallorca.com/ whats-on.
Francoist Plaque to Go An extraordinary plenary session held last week in Alcudia approved the proposal submitted by the centre-left government team for the withdrawal of a Francoist plaque that is located on the road of the Cap des Pinar.
The commemorative plaque, placed in 1939 (the “Year of the Victory”, according to the inscription) is dedicated to the battalion of engineers of Mallorca. Its elimination is a consequence of the application of the Law of Historical Memory. Heritage experts have ruled out that the plaque has some historical or artistic value, so the monument will be disassembled and, if it is in good condition, kept in an archive. All groups with municipal representation have the proposal that complies with the exception of the PP, which preferred to abstain without giving any argument to justify the meaning of their vote.
GOB Latest to Denounce Cement Plant The environmental group GOB has expressed its rejection of the cement storage and distribution centre planned by the Port Authority (APB) in Puerto Alcudia, calling it unjustified. According to the green organization, the need, opportunity and convenience of the construction of three cement silos, as a storage and distribution centre, is not justified, and it is also not guaranteed that loading, unloading, storage and transport operations won’t have an effect on the environment. The GOB recalled that the port of Alcúdia is located in a “sensitive area” and classified as a Place of Community Importance, LIC. In addition, they claim other factors that are doubt such as the area they need, the successful tender under Transpulve 2009, and the tendering system itself.

Hola! Who knew a summer could go so quick? It seems all that heat was a million miles away and life gets back into the autumnal groove. Nothing highlights the shoulder seasons more than the traditional firas that pop up all over the island and we start, as always, with Alcudia. In this issue we have the full agenda. There is a lot going on so keep a close eye on the programme and be sure to explore. See you in two weeks! The North Mallorca Lions Are Back! Back from a hot, hot summer, the North Mallorca Lions have lots of activities planned for Fall 2017. On Sunday, October 8, we are taking part in the Town of Pollensa’s Day of Associations, at the Cloisters in Pollensa, 10:00 to 14:00. Drop by and see what the Lions have to offer! We are currently on a membership drive, so if you’re looking for a way to give back to our community, please visit! We will be doing free diabetes testing there, so take a second (and a prick of the finger) to see if you’re at risk for this dangerous disease.
The Balearic Symphony Orchestra season is starting! Not only will a representative of the BSO be at our booth, but we’ll be providing a bus (as usual) from the north of the island to Palma the nights of the concert. The first concert is on Thursday, October 19, and will feature the Beethoven Violin Concerto and Mahler Symphony No. 5. On Thursday, October 26, the symphony will feature works of Respighi (Ancient Aires and Dances) and Mozart (Symphony No. 36). We have a movie night planned for November, and
La Gola Saturdays The La Gola Ornithological Tourism Centre has been a great success since it reopened its doors 18 months ago. It has been a superb resource for local and visiting birdwatchers and for local residents and school children. Originally opened in 2010, it is the first centre of its kind in the Balearics. Inside is a permanent exhibition with information panels on each of the prominent birds of Mallorca. It gives information on the bird and where you can spot them, as well as
local natural parks and public estates that are rich in local wildlife. From Saturday 30th, there is a new itinerary of afternoon talks continuing every week throughout October. Topics covered will be the Balearic Shearwater, Boneli’s Eagle, Osprey, European Black Vulture and bird migration through Mallorca. For full details see the What’s On and to contact the Ornithological centre call 692 644 036 or email info@ctolagola.com.

The Walks of the North
Castell del Rei The king of walks in the north, you even need a pass via the council to get there. It may sound like a faff and it is controversial, but it does mean that with limited visitors per day (20) you will feel like the only people there. All the way to the beach and
back is pushing nearly 20k so make sure you take snacks and drinks and camera. Start the walk along the cami de Ternelles, show your pass to the guard atthe gate and follow the path, you can’t go wrong.
Boquer Valley The Boquer Valley is a perfect walk with paths that spread across the breadth of the valley; it means that every
time you walk it, you can go a different way. Goats and birds will keep you company
Son Real
and the scramble down to the beach at the bottom is a doable challenge. It’s not for young children so head off with the older gang and enjoy a good flask of tea at the end. Find the Cami de Cala Boquer at second roundabout on the main road at the back of town, where there is a carpark, go through the gate and past the old house and you’re on your way. A day out in Son Real will reward you with animals, woodland, picnic areas, beach, rock pools, a refuge, a seemingly natural swimming pool and if that wasn’t enough, a pre-talayotic town, megalithic sepulchres, and a talayotic necropolis are there for exploration. The walk to the beach is long but varied ensuring the little ones are entertained. Located just past Can Picafort.
Ses FontsUfanes
A real family favourite, a walk in the woods at Ses Font Ufanes is great for kids and escaping the sun with shade a plenty. Bring a picnic and take your time but be careful after any heavy rain. A geological phenomenon lurks beneath and when the water tables are high enough
the water literally springs out of the groud. A superb sight that you should try and see if you can. Park by the Coves de Campanet and walk round to the finca. Follow the signs and you will enter the woods after crossing a little bridge.

The Mallorquinista by Charles Nutter From Zero to Hero
Four days is a long time in football and that certainly applies to Salva Sevilla the veteran midfield player who joined Real Mallorca just before the closure of the transfer window. Sevilla, 33, is a very talented and creative player who has had injury problems over the last few years. After joining he said it would
take him a while to get up to match fitness. He was on the substitutes’ bench for the Copa del Rey game against Lleida and came on in extra time. The game ended with a soporific nil-nil scoreline. Penalties were the order of the day and Sevilla’s tame spot kick was easily saved by the visiting keeper. Cano also missed from the spot and sadly Mallorca went out of the cup with a whimper. The following Sunday in the home league game against Atletic Seguntino with the scores at 1–1 he was thrown into the fray after an hour just as Abdon Prats was about to take a free kick in a dangerous position. Sevilla wrestled the ball from him and curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner. He is rapidly turning into a fan’s favourite and when he achieves full fitness he could be a serious asset. In that game Prats opened the scoring with a superb volley and added a third with a bullet header from a cross from, yes Sevilla! The visitors scored with seconds remaining but Mallorca and the fans were happy with the three points. Following last Saturday’s win at Ontinyent the islanders are now joint top of the league behind Elche. Both sides have 13 points after 5 games with an impressive run of four wins and a draw and both have only conceded 2 goals so far. The difference is that Elche have scored 14 goals and Mallorca have netted just 6 times. Head coach Vicente Moreno is happy with the team’s performances and is convinced the goals will come. He may be without striker Cedric for a while. The Nigerian is undergoing tests following his collapse on the pitch at the end of the game at Ontinyent. An irregular heartbeat is suspected.

Off the pitch there was a surprise announcement from the club that the vacant President’s position would be filled by Andy Kohlberg. He is part of the consortium that bought the club headed by Robert Sarver the owner of Phoenix Suns basketball team. Kohlberg is a former professional tennis player and a vice president of the Suns. How many games he actually attends remains to be seen. Local Pollensa resident Graeme le Saux, a winner of the Premiership during his time at Blackburn Rovers has also been appointed to the board of directors. Mallorca’s next game is at home this Sunday to Llagostera with a 12 noon kick off and away to Alcanyo the following week.
Ontinyent 0-1 Real Mallorca This was another game on an artificial pitch and the islanders set off at a fast pace with Pol Roige spurning two early chances. On the stroke of half time Prats was bundled over in the area and Lago Junior converted the penalty with ease. As the game wore on with Mallorca unable to build on their lead the home side exerted a lot of pressure. Raillo was outstanding in central defence and his confidence is growing with each passing game.
