Local News The Road to Lluc The Consell de Mallorca has taken measures to fully open the road between Pollensa and Lluc that passes through the estate of Ca na Borrassa, owned by the family of the town’s ex-Mayor Tomeu Cifre Ochogavia (leader of the Tots per Pollença party). Officers from the Environment department have carried out measures that guarantee the safety of members of the public and the Consell will spend two weeks refurbishing the road and removing the closure that is currently in place. Back in March 2012, there was a declaration that the old road from Lluc to Pollença would become a public road and its reform was agreed on. The owners of the estate appealed but since 2016, the property has been required to remove the barriers that prevented the free passage. After expiry of the request for the owner to withdraw the closure, the Consell has acted instead under articles 97 to 100 of Law 30/1992. Now they can guarantee the safety of visitors and have fenced off the pathway as the property has loose cattle. Initially it was to be the estate owners who were to pay for the work, but later a statement said it was still “unclear”.
No i Punt The summer celebrations in Inca, the Roman festival of Alcúdia and the fiestas of Santa Margalida and Pollensa have all joined the campaign ‘No i punt!’ which means, No and that’s it. The aim is to eradicate sexist aggression during celebrations. The Consell, groups of volunteers, Local Police, Civil Protection, youth and
women’s associations and municipal personnel have taken part in training days held by the Espais de Donos de Inca and sa Pobla. Newly trained on how to deal with each kind of situation, these agents will work during the fiestas and take relevant action according to the severity of the case.
Cement Works in Alcudia’s Port The Autoritat Portuària de Balears is considering authorizing the construction of a storage and distribution centre for 2,154sqm of cement with three 18-m-high silos in the commercial port of Alcudia. Unlike what happened with the bid for reform and operation of the first line of the Port (stopped by a judge), this project meets all the urban parameters and of uses foreseen in a Special Order Plan that allows the use of storage and offices, including silos of up to 30 metres in height. Nevertheless, the technicians at the Council of Alcudia consider that the measures contained in the environmental plan are ‘insufficient’ at minimizing the impact on the landscape of the new installation. Further, they wish to avoid its operation which would cause great annoyance from air pollution and noise pollution. The council wish to expand this study and obtain a favourable report from the Environment Department. In the meantime, the local community is getting active. A group of residents of Puerto Alcudia gathered at noon yesterday at the maritime station, brought together by the platform Salvem el Moll, to
denounce the “continuous environmental aggressions” suffered by the coastal town. The protest was organized to express the local rejection of the plant, one that, according to the platform, will have a great environmental impact in an area that already suffers other pressures such as the transport of coal, the existence of an “unlicensed” warehouse or the future expansion of the marina of Alcudiamar, among others. “We do not want to be the landfill of Mallorca,” said the spokesman, Josep Alonso, who announced upcoming mobilizations to defend the port from these threats.
Shrinking Beaches The beaches of Sant Pere and Sant Joan, situated in two small coves of Alcúdia in the bay of Pollensa, are in a bad way after years of erosion. Sant Pere, especially has been subject to so much erosion that large rocks are now exposed. The beach itself has receded so much that now it is just a small strip where the beach bar places a sunbeds and umbrellas, there are only a few metres of free sand between them and the water. Access to the beach is also complicated because the water has undermined the steps. Domingo Bonnín, the council official responsible for beaches says that “this year we can’t do much more, we have worked to replace the sand as much as possible, but we could not regenerate with less than 50 or 60 trucks of sand which is what we need.” The council will wait until next year before requesting the intervention of Costas if necessary. On the other hand, sources at Alcudiamar point out that this year there is also
a lack of sand on the beach located next to the marina. “Other years we have paid for a truckload of sand, but this year Costas has not authorized it,” says a manager. Nevertheless, Bonnín points out that “the municipal operators always try to replace the sand of the main beach”.
Can Morató Investment Authorities in the Pollensa Townhall have stated that, in recent weeks, everal investors have expressed their intention to acquire the old carpet factory of Can Morató whenever a different use is authorized. At the moment the building is marked as industrial. This was confirmed last week by Mayor March, who explained that they have received different queries that pose a hotel or cultural use. However, March made it clear that the definition of use is in the hands of the Consell de Mallorca. “the last word is with the Consell de Mallorca, but for us the priority is the conservation of the building,” he said. March explained that the factory is on sale for €2.3m. The Morató family, owner of the property, tried unsuccessfully on different occasions during the last decade for the council to buy the complex. The mayor believes that the recent cleaning of the gardens and façade may have contributed to investment interest. “We would like it to be rehabilitated and given a dignified use, preferably a use that allows people to enjoy it,” says the Councillor of Urbanism, Bartomeu Cifre.

¡Hola! There is so much to get in to this week’s issue that I’m running out of space. From charity walks to art society planning, from La Patrona to Jazz Festivals, from Cava to Cavalls, we have it all! But of course, all thoughts are on the Patrona. Pollensa will be alive with the annual buzz and, if you have never seen it, make sure you capture some moments of the battle on the 2nd August. It’s quite an experience. Bones festes a tots, see you on the other side... Twiddle Muffs from Howard Mullen ESRA North is well known for getting involved in some very strange things. This week members of ESRA North went to the Headquarters of the AFAMA charity in Pollensa to make a presentation of some Twiddle Muffs. Professional caregivers rave about the effectiveness of Twiddles®. Having something to hold and manipulate, something to “twiddle” or fidget with, has a calming effect on a person who has dementia. The textures, the gadgets, the warm cosiness of the Twiddles® are all there for just that reason. The stimulation they provide truly adds to the individual’s quality of life.
ESRA North Chair, Christine Maynard, along with other members, who made the Twiddles, presented approximately 40 Twiddles to AFAMA, and they included 10 made by ladies in Scotland and sent out via ESRA North Member, Irene Lynch. AFAMA were really grateful to receive the gifts, which they will use with people locally. There was a very friendly atmosphere at the presentation in the AFAMA’s gardens. The English Speaking Residents
Association in the North has established a very close relationship with AFAMA and the representatives of AFAMA expressed their thanks gratitude for these really useful presents. So ESRA North has started another new activity, the production of Twiddle Muffs! What’s next? Well done ESRA North!
Alcudia from Other Times As part of the Sant Jaume celebrations, the recent event, Alcudia d’altre temps, was a theatrical and festive tour of the town. Harking back
to recent history, with humour and a good dose of nostalgia, Alcudiencs were
treated to a show full of characters from the past. Some were dressed in 1960s style and represented a blast from the past, like the old bus stop, petrol station, local bars such as Can Polit. Judging by the crowds that followed the tour of the town, it was a big success.

Festival of Pollensa The Festival of Pollensa is about to start and this year will mark a shift back to the festival’s classical origins and away from other musical genres, literature and cinema. The composer Joan Valent directed the festival from 2011, but it is now under new direction. The Festival now rests with a technical committee of musicians and teachers including Marta Bauzá, Antoni Aragón, Joan Campomar, Noemí Dalmau and Carles Ponsetí. Together they have drawn up a schedule of seven concerts every Wednesday and Saturday in the Claustre de Santo Domingo starting Saturday 5 August. The opening concert is from the Gabrieli Consort, a group specializing in the interpretation of a sacred repertoire. They will perform a cappella that travels through five centuries of songs of praise to the Virgin Mary with two of the great Marian antiphons of the 16th century. They will be followed by Carles Trepat — a master in Catalan guitar; the Balearic Symphony Orchestra accompanied by the soloists Julian Rachlin, Mischa Maisky and Itamar Golan; Quatuor Beat a brilliant perscussion group perform ‘Kromoritmos’, Les Musiciens du Louvre, a classical orchestra perform Mozart and Haydn; the pianist Nelson Freire, the string quartet Quartet Mandelring; and tenor Christoph Prégardien performing with pianist Julius Drake. The programme was recently presented at the courtyard of Can Llobera in the Old Town to appeal to local residents, showing that classical music is not elitist but accessible to all. The council are also planning an informative campaign to bring classical music closer to schools. Next year, master classes with invited artists are in the pipeline.

La Patrona 2017 The tension on August 2nd —at 7pm exactly—is profound and can be felt around the town of Pollensa, whether it’s through the TV screens or standing in wait at the Sant Jordi steps. No more so is it felt than in Plaza Almoina. The cockerel fountain stands defiant as nightie-clad chicas form a human chain marking the aisle in which Joan Mas and Dragut begin their fight. After an hour of Cristiano gathering, and many more hours of keen spectators claiming their spot, Joan Mas jumps out of the window and silence fills the air. Dragut eyeballs his opponent and Joan Mas calls to his town. The ‘Crit’ is emotional, powerful and no matter where you are from—born and bred Pollencin, visitor or settler from other lands—this is pure goosebump material. But this tension has not got to Ramon Perelló, this year’s Joan Mas, at least not yet. He told TOTN that he doesn’t really feel nervous, “maybe I will closer to the day but not now, I’m just happy”. There is no fear of stumbling on words either, el Crit, is something that the children learn and act out from when they are young. Indeed, this is a day Ramon’s been dreaming about since he was a child, which goes some way in describing how proud his family are and the honour that they all feel. Patrona 2017 is something of a family affair. Ramon’s father Biel Perello is in the Ajuntament Vella and his close friends are playing Dragut and Lloctinent. Lloctinent’s dad is Abanderat. Plus, all four members of the Ajuntament Vella are cousins, they all have the same name too. For Ramon, this year was his second attempt at being Joan Mas. He has a group of friends who take turns to try. Of
course, these things have to be planned and considered; no one would campaign against a close friend or relative as votes would be split and neither would win. So, as Ramon came second last year and because his dad was going to be in the Ajuntament Vella (only one team of four put themselves forward), he was encouraged to try again. When we met Ramon, there was more than a week until the big day. He had already rehearsed battle against Biel Ferragut who will play Dragut and they will probably do it another 4-5 times. And as for the call to arms, Ramon is leaving that to raw emotion on the day. He’s been watching, saying, acting it since he was young and for now he needs to save his voice.
Joan Mas’ Call to Arms: “Mare de Déu dels Angels, assistiumos. Pollencins, aixecau-vos, que els pirates ja són aqui.” (Our Lady of Angels, help us. Pollensa, get up! The pirates are already here!)

Aire Brut Nature 2013 Although the Cavas currently offered on the market don’t quite come close to the quality of sparkling wine produced in the Champagne region, they really aren’t far behind. Last week it was announced that some unique vineyards have been approved to sit above all others in a new classification for Cava. These single vineyards will sell at premium prices and should hopefully help override the current perception of Cava only as a region of cheap fizz.
mallorca_restaurants_banner.qxp_Layout 1
This week I opened a bottle of Aire Brut Nature 2013, which although wasn’t from one of the new designated special vineyards, was of a very high quality. And at a very friendly price. More fruit geared than yeasty, the effervescence was fine, the palate had decent complexity and length. At around only €16.50 a bottle it was in a class of its own and a worthwhile choice to be considered for any forthcoming celebrations such as “... it’s sunny today”. 24/07/2017at16:44 Page 1 Available www.vilaviniteca.es

The JoyRon Foundation’s Next Project Following meetings with the management of Son Espases Hospital, the Fundacion JoyRon are now in the final stages of an agreement to finance the construction of a fully equipped permanent cinema within the hospital for the children both in the Palliative Care ward and the general ward. The cinema will screen films while the children are in the hospital receiving medical treatment. This will be of great humane benefit, especially for those children in palliative care and long term hospital stay. The children’s cinema will have a capacity for 20+ children, that can be seated on tiered seating with bright coloured cushions and for the very small children in fun mobile seats. Children confined to wheelchairs and/or with

As most of you are aware the foundation has participated in, and raised sponsorship funds, with a team in the annual 48km overnight walk from Palma to Lluc (This year the event takes place on 5th August). A touch of Spanish: The Bono Long-time English speaking residents and visitors will be familiar with the term “bono”, which is often seen at the beautician, the physiotherapist and other places where a regular service is offered. Newer residents and visitors may not immediately catch on. Wondering instead why a middle aged Irish musician who’s really called Paul and wears unusual glasses has suddenly become so popular in Mallorca. He hasn’t – it’s something else altogether! In fact, the “bono” is a peculiarly Spanish special offer which many English speakers may not recognise from their experience in other countries. A bit like the British “Buy One Get One Free” offer, widely referred to as the BOGOF! Which sometimes sounds like a slightly rude suggestion. The Spanish “bono” – literally means a voucher. Buying a number of sessions from businesses offering them gives really good discounts with each session costing

somewhere between 70% and 90% less. There are no catches involved. The purchaser gets a cheaper price for the product and the seller in guaranteed regular custom. The nearest British equivalent is the coffee shop loyalty card and who hasn’t got half a dozen of those at the bottom of some old bag with not quite enough stamps to ever get the free cup of coffee? Below you will see Hipica Formentor, who are finding that “bonos” work really well for regular clients or visitors who want to fit plenty of riding into a holiday at an affordable price. They each have to be used by the same person and the longer expeditions and events which take pace like tapas rides and beach rides can be paid for by 3 or 4 “bonos” reflecting a great discounted on the walk up price. Look out for these discounts in other places and encourage them in your regular haunts.

The Mallorquinista Complete Squad
by Charles Nutter
Real Mallorca’s new head coach Vicente Moreno has completed his squad for the forthcoming season in the Spanish Segunda B. Brandon Thomas signed for French Club Rennes for a fee reported to be €3m which has slightly eased the financial pressure. If Thomas is subsequently sold on for a profit Mallorca will receive ten per cent of that profit. The latest additions are striker Alex Lopez (23) from Nastic – yet another who has worked with Moreno in the past. Ruben Hernaiz (24) a midfielder from Espanyol, Nestor Salinas (24) an attacking midfielder from Mirandes and central defender Jose Angel (28) from Elche have also joined the ranks. Players who have come through the youth ranks Miguel Parera, Angel Sanchez, James, Cano, Serrano, and Cedric will be added to the roster. Only four of last year’s squad remain namely Lago Junior, Pol Roige, Damia Sabater and Raillo. All four are anxious to leave and play in a higher division although Javier Reccio, the club’s Director of Football insists they are going nowhere. The position of Raillo seems almost untenable at the Son Moix Stadium. He was singled out for particular attention by the fans Ultras at the end of last season and was branded a mercenary who did not fight for the colours. At the club’s first pre-season training session about 20 fans attended and proceeded to hurl abuse at Raillo and throw smoke bombs. Raillo reacted by smiling at them. Vicente Moreno was diplomatic when asked about such a vitriolic atmosphere on his first day on the training ground. He said that he understood that passions run high when a club is relegated and it was up to the current squad to work hard and gain the fans’ trust. One of the released players Biel Company, born and bred on the island, said there was no price to pay for playing for the
club that is in your heart and he was distraught to leave. The fixtures for the coming season have not yet been released. Martin Villar the President of the Spanish FA has been arrested on corruption charges and until a stand-in is appointed everything is being delayed. Mallorca played their first pre-season game last Saturday against Poblense (Sa Pobla) and won 1-0 with a goal from Rufo in the second period. Moreno played two entirely different teams in each half and fitness is the main issue at this stage. A capacity 800 spectators attended the game, which was held at the Son Bibiloni training ground. For the record Mallorca were completely in control throughout and could have won by a comfortable margin. Over 2,000 fans have already renewed their season tickets which is encouraging and indications are that attendances may be on a par with last season. If the club can get off to a winning start then the possibility of rising like a phoenix from the ashes is on the cards. At this stage every fan of every football club in Europe is confident and hopeful of a good and happy season ahead. Visca Mallorca!!
