Riverside Forest in the Making What is it for? Why do we need it? What’s going on in the North?

Easter 2018

This Easter, the council of Pollensa is collaborating with the Association of Bakers and Pastry Chefs in the Balearic Islands, to promote a local sweet treat, the Formatjada. Similar to rubiols but different in shape, the round floral shaped cake is filled with jam, angel hair or requeson. To promote this typical Pollencin product, a

gift box has been designed in its honour. You can find them in bakeries across the town.

The Government has overseen the planting of no less than 6,855 trees on river banks to recover the forests on the island of Mallorca. The project, which costs €59,282, and was paid for by the sustainable tourism tax, was executed during the months of January and February. One of the forest species in the riverside environments and most historically present in the islands were elm trees. Obliterated during the 1980s and 90s due to fungal disease, the tree all but disappeared from the Balearics. Environment Minister, Vicenç Vidal, visited the Natural Park of s’Albufera and could see the work that’s been done. He told press, that the riverside forest “is one of the most unique ecosystems of the Mediterranean. These vegetal formations, especially constituted by deciduous species, have occupied the boundaries of river courses and fresh water from torrents, continued on Page 2...

ramblas, rafts, reservoirs, etc., and generate very important environmental and ecological functions, such as the regulation of aquifers, the increase of biodiversity or the improvement of landscape…” Vice President Busquets emphasizes the ability to act jointly with the local administrations and explained that this project “has had a contribution of capital collected by the tax of sustainable tourism.” She added that, “this tax is about generating shared prosperity, the prosperity that tourism generates has to be reversed later in projects that value the environment.”

Water Levels After the foulest and wettest of weekends, it will come as no surprise that the reservoirs are practically full. Indeed, with the collection of 325 cubic metres of water, levels have risen to 98%. What is surprising is that before the weekend, the levels were at 70%. The 28% rise is the same as the rise in the previous three months. In Cúber, capacity was at 102% with the overflow heading to the Almadrá Torrent. To take advantage of the excess, water is being extracted from the reservoirs and the Lloseta potabilization plant has started up.

Sand Sharing The mayors of Alcúdia, Muro and Santa Margalida are coming together to regenerate the beaches of Can Picafort and Muro with the excess sand that is gathering on the beach in Alcudia. It’s apparent that the beach of Alcúdia (especially the area of the Xara) has accumulated excess sand in the last five years while those of Can Picafort and Muro have lost it, it’s visible but it has also been confirmed by a University study. The causes are down to urban changes (construction of ports for example) and the dynamics of the coast, among other factors. The accumulation of sand causes various problems, one of which is the stacking of dead (and smelly) posidonia on the beach. In 2017 no less than 400 trucks of seaweed were taken away. The mayors have already presented their project, and they now need an environmental impact study from the Ministry of the Environment.

Rapper Controversy in Alcudia In February, a Mallorcan rapper known as Voltanyc was sentenced to 3.5 years for inciting terrorism and criticizing the King. His song lyrics suggested that Jorge Campos, nationalist leader and head of the Circulo Balear Foundation, “deserved a nuclear bomb,” and “Monarchy is his ideology ... I’ll see you in the Royal Palace with a Kalashnikov...”. He told El Espanol, “All I’ve said about the King, is in the media ... so which insults are we talking about if everything was already published in newspapers?” The case has now entered the local political arena as El Pi and the PP councillors in Alcudia voted last week to reject a motion presented by the PSOE and Gent for Alcúdia that urged the City to demand the annulment of the judicial sentence. Both El Pi and the PP stated they are in favour of freedom of expression, but judicial decisions should be complied

with. The PSOE spokesman, Pere Malondra, opened the debate denouncing the “decline in fundamental rights” in the Spanish State and described the jail sentence as a “barbarity”. The PSOE, Gent for Alcúdia, Union for Alcúdia and Guanyem Alcúdia voted for the motion but ultimately, it was rejected with ten votes against from El Pi and PP.

Ternelles: Resolved? A recent ruling by the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJB) has confirmed that the municipality of Pollensa is the institution responsible for authorizing visits to the Ternelles estate because it remains the holder of the passage leading to Cala Castell. The council is obviously happy with the outcome which, they say “confirms all municipal views”. For several weeks, the company that manages the estate has prevented hikers from entering despite having permits from the council. They have just allowed access to the Fundación Vida Silvestre Mediterránea. The Council is hoping the property will respect the TSJB’s decision but all the signs show that the administrator of the farm will file an appeal. One paper presented to the TSJB by the Ternelles estate has requested that the Council urgently adapts to the General Plan for Urban Planning (PGOU) to the Plan for the Management of Natural Resources (PORN) of the Serra de Tramuntana, one of the requirements imposed by the Supreme Court to the council in April 2017. The TSJB is giving the council three months to deliver documentation concerning the PGOU

adaptation, but it has made it clear that the municipal institution “is sovereign” when it comes to managing its own urban planning.

Frontline Opened Last week, the partial reopening to traffic on the front line of Puerto Pollensa marked the beginning of the end of the pedestrianization project. From now on, the cars will be only be allowed on the frontline between 6am-5pm. From the early evening to early morning the road is exclusively for pedestrians. When cars travel on the semipedestrianized road, the speed limit is 20km per hour. In announcing the reopening, the council thanked the residents’ patience during the construction period and urged everyone to adapt to the new arrangement.

Capri Pier Controversy Environmental group, the GOB, has denounced the construction of an “illegal” dock in Puerto Pollensa and demanded the “immediate stop” and the removal of the structure. They claim that the 20-m long jetty does not comply with coastal, environmental and urban regulations; “it appears that no concession has been processed or granted by the Ministry of Environment nor has there been any study of the environmental impact that these works can produce on the coast of the Albercuix beach and in the rest of the Bay.” On the other hand, it would appear that the Hotel has a duty of maintenance on the jetty due to an old concession.

Helping Victims of Domestic Violence

Easter is upon us and I can hardly believe that winter is behind us (fingers crossed). It’s been a fun issue to put together this time. Cooking curry to enjoy with friends and eating delicious bread is not a bad way to earn a living. I hope you enjoy it too and reading about it will inspire you to try something different.

Quartet Concert

Last month, for International Women’s Day, the Lions held an all-female string quartet concert. The event was free but donations, totalling €500, were raised. All of this will be put towards a new women’s refuge, here in the north. With only one on the island, it is sorely needed.

SICTED Diplomas in Alcudia

The North Mallorca Lions will be helping local charity Onit with their flower show on April 7, from 11am to 7pm, at the Claustre, in Pollensa. The Lions will have a booth filled to bursting with trademark goodies: homemade cakes and cookies, jams and chutneys. Make sure you stop by and shop, you will be supporting their 2018 cause: helping the victims of domestic violence. Estate agent Leigh Morgan, together with a group of colleagues, friends, and clients, has taken on the Mallorca 312 km, a giant cycle round the island on 28 April 2018. As if the distance is not challenge enough, the total climbs during the race represent a height of 5,050 m (16,410 feet)! Please donate through his GoFundMe page – visit www.GoFundMe.com and search for Leigh (L-E-IG-H) Morgan, and pledge. He

has already raised €3,000 as we go to print, with a target of €5,000. All proceeds go to the North Mallorca Lions to fund their activities in helping victims of domestic violence. Call Ann for more information: 691 079 206. On another note, do you know someone who needs new glasses but can’t afford them? The Lions can get them free spectacles! A prescription is required, and a little bit of paperwork, and the organization will send them a pair of glasses at no charge! Call Susan for more information: 636 914 425. Finally, back by popular demand… The North Mallorca Lions will hold its second annual Day Against Domestic Violence in mid-May, at the Claustre in Pollensa. Details will be given in TOTN nearer the date.

Recycling in Alcudia The council of Alcudia has delivered a hundred bins, containers and buckets to collaborate with the recycling at the IES Alcúdia Institute.

Last week, Alcudia Town Hall hosted the awarding of SICTED diplomas to local companies. The award is a mark of tourist quality and stands for “Integral System for Quality in Tourism in Spain as a Destination”. Those being awarded ranged from hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops, hairdressing salons, the Tourist Offices of Alcúdia and the town’s Local Police. Four companies were awarded a SICTED diploma for the first time, they were Restaurant Posidònia, Restaurant La Terraza, Restaurante Las Sirenas and Zafiro Palace Alcúdia.

Both the environment councillor, Tomàs Adrover, and EMSA councillor, Domingo Bonnín, made the delivery of containers, which included yellow, blue and green bins for general

recycling and organic composting. They will be placed both in the classrooms and in the exterior spaces and common areas.

New Educational Guide Anew informative guide to the Walls of Alcudia was launched last week. The guide gives educational explanations and shows the chronology of the construction of the walls through illustrations, photographs and text boxes, in a fun and entertaining way. The guide is sponsored by

the European Union, the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, the SOIB, Youth Entrepreneurship and Employment Strategy youth guarantee, Ministry of Labour, Trade and Industry, Heritage Area of the Alcúdia Town Hall and the Consortium of the Roman city of Pol·lèntia.

NOMADS Success “NOMADS certainly ‘broke a leg’ last month with their latest production; A Spoonful of NOMADS. With all three performances filled to the rafters, a total audience of over 260 witnessed the cast sing and dance through an adaptation of Mary Poppins. They received fantastic support from each audience who, from their glowing comments, had great fun and enjoyed the show as much as the cast. With topical

references to the Suffragette movement and the 100 year’s anniversary of women gaining the Vote, not to mention Brexit, the regular appearance of a French Policeman and a larger than life Banks family, the show was another resounding success. Once again, profits from the weekend will be donated to local or national charities with any requests considered”.

Heavenly Bread

If you have an iota of interest in local food and if you eat bread, then you will know about Xeixa. From Mallorca, this grain was close to extinction as industrial bread took over. However, some farmers who practice biodynamic agriculture have successfully brought it back. One of the first to do so was Tomeu Morro a Pollencin farmer based between the Old Town and the Port. Passionate about this ancient grain, remembering the bread of his childhood, Morro uses his three fields to harvest Xeixa and a few of its local cousins, brushing the conventional industrial varieties aside. Preferring to live naturally and making their own contribution to the slow food movement, Tomeu and his wife produce stunning bread that is cultivated by hand, from the fields to the stone oven.

Production begins with the milling of the flour. Every Monday, Tomeu uses one his two mills for the wheat he has grown. One mill is over 200 years old and produces a coarser grain than its newer colleague. The granite stone in each ensures the grain stays cold. A little of this fresh flour is then used to feed the 20-year-old culture that Tomeu uses to make his sourdough bread. No commercial yeast here. Each Friday the bread is made with flour that is less than a week old and a culture that is fed and lovingly kept alive. The bread is then sold at the Mercat Ecològic de Palma. If that’s too far, don’t worry, you can still buy Tomeu’s bread at Xeixa Eco Shop and Al Mattarello in Puerto Pollensa and Eu Siurell in Pollensa. facebook.com/arc-al-cel

Food & Drink Curry on Cooking! This great new venture, Curry on Cooking, recently appeared on Channel 5’s “Bargain Loving Brits”, the TV show that gives an insight to the Brits who exchanged their UK lives for sunnier climes. This cooking project was born when Nilam Wright moved to Costa Calida on the mainland and discovered unlike the UK, with its historic ties to India; curry is not on the menu in Spain, Spain has no longstanding links to South Asia and the 300,000 Brits who live there miss a good curry.

Spotting a business opportunity, the Spice Sisters (Nilam and her sister Veena Josh) produced a range of six curry kits. The flavours reflect what’s on offer in high street curry houses back in the UK. The names are instantly recognisable – Madras, Korma, Tikka Masala, Bombay Potatoes, Jalfrezi and Balti – and their motto, KISS – Keep it Simple, Sister, is printed on every pack, TOTN had the pleasure of trying out these wonderful curry kits and can happily confirm that not only is the quality second to none, they are also incredibly easy to cook with. The kits come with a shopping list and an easy to follow recipe; they are free from sugar, gluten, dairy, nuts, additives, preservatives and suitable for vegans. Veena says: “We want to conquer as many tastes buds as possible but also to bust the myth that Indian food is unhealthy.”

La Bota 41 de Palo Cortado Viejísimo Every so often a wine stops all conversation at the dinner table and instead dominates it. This ‘bota’ or cask is one such Sherry. Equipos Navazos is run by two Sherry fanatics who find individual casks that are often overlooked, and bottle them as part of their range. They have unearthed many gems over the years and this Palo Cortado #41 is one of them. Rich, unctuous and powerful, you can’t guarantee all around the table will like it, but those that do will love it. It worked well with langoustines when we had it but will also go well with meat. The price means this is not your everyday drinking wine, but this Spanish sherry is surely up there among some of the greatest wines in the world. The Equipo Navazos wines are available from www.vilaviniteca.es

As you cook with the kits, the authenticity is obvious. This is ‘real Indian food’ as well as a healthy alternative to jars. Nilam Wight says “although curry is available in Spain – it’s not very nice, it’s expensive to eat out, the right spices are hard to find and everybody was lamenting how they missed a decent curry. As a result we created Curry On Cooking.” For a curry night that will not fail, we urge you to give it a try! You can buy these kits via their website curryoncooking.com. One kit is just €3.50 and shipping is free for orders over €10.

Get Your House Ship Shape Charlie Bradburn, for Holiday Renting from Pollentia Rentals Despite the possible cap on tourist rental licenses, competition for holiday rentals properties remains fierce. And if the new tourist license law is introduced, primary residences can also be rented for up to 60 days per year.

Guests pay a lot, especially in July and August. Expectations are understandably high. Here are some of Pollentia Rentals´ top tips for preparing your property so that it gets booked and re- booked. For the photos and first impressions Do a de-clutter that lasts. This is essential. Be ruthless. Anything that doesn’t spark joy in the house needs to go. I recommend following the process in Marie Kondo´s best-selling book: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organising. It also makes it much easier and faster to clean. If you are renting your primary residence, this will save you hours of time when de-camping. I can move out of my house in under three hours after my radical de-clutter! Keep décor neutral and fresh with simple Mallorcan touches – a bowl of fresh lemons, lovely cushions and floaty curtains. Ideally remove any fake flowers and plants. However authentic they may look, too many people dislike them. And they collect dust. Far better to add a simple bunch of flowers from your garden or the market.

In the entire season last year Pollentia Rentals only had one broken vase, and six broken wine glasses. If your place looks nice, guests tend to respect it. Ikea is great, but can be over-done.

A decent cuppa! Leave nice big mugs for your guests. Any chipped or cracked mugs should go straight in the bin. Ditto with plates, bowls and glasses. You are welcome To give guests a home from home experience (and reduce the ‘Sorry to bother you but we can’t get the WiFi to work’

phone calls), leave a detailed house manual. There are also elements that must be included legally such as your ETV license number and the pack must be translated into Spanish and Catalan. We recommend leaving a few local things to eat and drink. Guests ALWAYS appreciate this. Especially if the wine or beer is icy cold.

The Mallorquinista Limping Over the Line

Real Mallorca are going through a dreadful patch of form as the end of the season is on the horizon. They have gained only three points out of the last possible 15 on offer and indeed haven’t won a game since 18th February. The reasons are unclear. Lago Junior is back in the team after an extensive lay-off following a metatarsal injury. Alex Lopez is also back in the team after a four-match suspension. Despite this the side were very fortunate to come away from Hercules last Saturday with a point in a one-one draw. The home side were superior throughout and the only surprise was it took them until after half time to get their noses in front. Mallorca were bereft of ideas and in the closing stages winger Bustos went down in a heap in the home side penalty area. The referee awarded a penalty which Lago Junior converted in a cool fashion. Replays showed that there was no contact whatsoever with Bustos from a defender. This was the second week in a row that the islanders have salvaged a point at the very end of a match. There are just seven games left in the regular season and Mallorca are still seven points clear at the top of Segunda B Group 3. They should still maintain that lead and head into the playoffs for promotion. However there has to be a rapid change of attitude from the players and head coach Vicente Moreno has to find a way to motivate his charges. Somehow he has to reintroduce the swagger and confidence that was evident in the team from the start of the season until Christmas time.

Mallorca are away at Valencia B this Sunday 1st April and home to Lleida on the 8th April

by Charles Nutter Villareal B 1-1 Real Mallorca The islanders travelled to their closest rivals in league terms and were fortunate to scrape a draw. Dario put the home side ahead with a brilliant solo effort. The match turned on the stroke of half time when Salva Sevilla rounded the home keeper who brought him down. This is a clear sending off offence but the referee only gave the home keeper a yellow card. Aridai scored from the penalty spot. After 65 minutes Lago Junior reappeared in Mallorca colours as a substitute after a lengthy injury lay off.

Real Mallorca 1-1 Formentera With Lago Junior and Lopez back in the starting line up and minnows from the small island off Ibiza providing the opposition, everything was set up for a comfortable win. Far from it, instead of a morale boosting goal festival home fans were treated to an insipid performance. Formentera were out of the traps from the first whistle and were quicker to the ball. After just 8 minutes, Gabri scored a spectacular opener for the visitors and they dominated the entire first half. Mallorca were booed off at the break and despite Moreno ringing the changes with his substitutes there was little threat. With a minute to go, the reds forced a corner and home keeper Reina came up and was clearly fouled as the corner was swung in. The referee allowed play to continue and fullback Joan Sastre headed a scarcely deserved equalizer.
