Ancient Rome Arrives in Alcudia Despite the rain and muddy carparks, the fair was a success with thousands of visitors creating a great atmosphere around the town. The star of the show was undoubtedly the Fira’s first ever Roman market. In fact, all the attractions throughout

the Balearic Government and mayors from other towns.

Estimates are that 40,000 visitors arrived in the Old

Town over the weekend, despite the rain on Sunday morning. Also, many official representatives from across the island joined the Mayor of Alcudia, Antoni Mir, and the Councillor for fairs and markets, Catalina Juan Pericàs, including members of

The Catalan referendum, which is filling newspapers and news broadcasts around the world has also touched Mallorca. Local organizations called for towns to “mobilize” and speak out against the reaction

of Spanish authorities to those wishing to vote. It also directly affected the council of Pollensa when one of the stakeholders threatened to break away from the governing team if they approved the motion

in favour of the referendum. The coalition Junts Avançam, which governs the council of Pollensa in minority thanks to its pact with Unió Mollera Pollencina (UMP), has successfully persuaded its government partner to keep

The I Roman Market on the Camí de Roda had more than 70 stands and a further 160 outlets attended the general fair and joined in with the Roman theme.

the agreement signed at the beginning of the legislature. For five days, the coalition was waiting for the UMP’s final decision after it had threatened to leave the government team if the plenary of last Thursday approved the motion in favour of the Catalan referendum presented by Alternativa. The motion was approved with the mayor’s vote, and the UMP subsequently met the following day to decide whether to break the pact. It didn’t communicate its resolution, rather the group promised to issue a statement within three days. The party’s president, Jose Antonio Hortas, was in favour of breaking away, while others, including the councilman and mayor’s delegate in Puerto Pollensa, Andrés Nevado, wanted to maintain the pact. Mayor March said in a statement that Junts Avançam “has fulfilled the pact of government signed with UMP” claiming that this is a coalition “with different parties and diverse political sensitivities” which is why there is freedom in ideological positioning. He also added that the motion in favour of the Catalan referendum “does not compromise the action of government and has no legal or economic connection.” In the end, the UMP has decided to keep the pact and stay loyal to the Junts Avançam party. This helped Miquel Angel March avoid a very tough situation where he would lose majority. Someone who didn’t come away unscathed is the UMP party president Jose Antonio Hortas who resigned with immediate effect.

Pollensa & Alcudia receive €2.1m Local Development Minister Joan Font visited Pollensa and Alcudia last week to see new projects that the Consell has subsidized through the Special Investment Plans of Investments 2016-2017. In total €2.1m has been invested, of which €710,385 to Pollensa was invested in Pollensa; and €760,478 in Alcúdia. In Pollensa, the renovation of the Guillem Cifre de Colonya Cultural Centre (where the Music School is located), and the maintenance of energy efficient street lighting of several zones, were the main areas of expenditure. In Alcúdia, the council has executed a total of three projects. The repair of the pavement in the old town and the public lighting of the Paseo Voramar has been improved; the sewerage of the Artà road has been improved and finally, the town hall of Alcúdia has been able to acquire an electric car and motorbike valued at €30,000.

Theatre Reopens in Muro The municipal theatre of Muro reopened last Sunday after a complete reform that took several months. The project, which cost €137,500 and was financed through the special aid plan 2016-2017 of the Consell de Mallorca. The work included structural repair and improving access. Specifically the false ceiling was replaced, new lighting installed and the stage was repaired. Entry via calle Joan Carles I is now completely accessible and the services have been adapted for those with mobility problems.

The theatre reopened with the presentation of ‘Ramon Llull per a tots’ performed by the band Unió Artistic Murera and the singer Joan Manel. The councillor of Culture, Miquel Porquer, told the public that Muro “needed a scenic space like this, since we are a municipality with cultural concerns.”

Port of Bacares Investment The Minister for Territory, Energy and Mobility, Marc Pons, presented the project to reform the port of es Barcarès in Alcudia, with the aim of increasing security and reordering moorings. Drainage will be improved by dredging sediment and sand, and the conditioning of the bottom of the port. The work will start this month and will take four months. Once complete, the little port will have new paving, improved facilities and green areas. There are also plans to replace the beached ramp with a non-slip and safer pavement. The small port of es Barcarés meets the demand mainly of residents and a few from elsewhere. Pons explained that the reform will not expand the number of moorings, but that “the majority will have Barcarés as a base port, which will help to reduce the waiting list of applicants in the municipality by almost 50%.”

Bus Station Update The Council of Pollensa has opened the bidding process for the construction of the future bus station in Puerto Pollensa. From next summer, the terminal will operate the shuttle bus

service to the Lighthouse of Formentor. Note that the new restrictions will be in place and private cars will no longer have access. The budget for the bus station is €420,000 with a timeline of four months. Interested companies have until the middle of this month. The ‘Moll’ bus station will be located in the vicinity of the health centre and will consist of a few bathrooms and a pergola, as well as four passenger loading points, as explained yesterday by councilman Tomeu Cifre Bennàssar. The City Council dismissed the criticism from the GOB, which argued that the land does not have the necessary qualification, according to laws, to house this type of public service. The environmental group had previously proposed another site, located next to the Gola wetland, a solution that the government team described as “crazy”.

Pedestrianization Update All tenders are in for the pedestrianization project and the council are deliberating. Cifre told press that some who applied actually reduced the period of work to four months, a factor that “has great weight” in determining the company awarded. In addition, some of them have committed to making improvements on the initial project. In principle, the works should begin in November.

MusicMakers Sing Something Simple from Howard Mullen

Over the long hot summer, Musicmakers in Puerto Pollensa have continued singing and rehearsing. Two weeks ago they sang in the September Songs Concert in the Anglican Church in Palma. After their April Concert of “Happy Songs” the theme of their Autumn Concert is Nostalgia and is based on the format and style of the BBC Radio 2 programme, “Sing Something Simple”. The programme was broadcast from 1959 on Sunday evenings and was very popular (there were not many TV’s about then.)

The programme featured a great diversity of relaxed, popular songs and ballads and the Musicmakers version of “Sing Something Simple” has a hint of Barbershop singing in it, with the sopranos singing the high tenor line and the altos singing the melody (for a change!). In true Sing Something Simple style, very few songs are sung completely, so more songs than ever will be sung! The Musicmakers Concerts take place at 7.30pm Wednesday 11th October in the Casa de Cultura in

Alcudia and Friday 13th October in the Vecinos Rooms in Puerto Pollensa. Tickets are €5, which includes a drink, and are available from Musicmakers and on the door. All proceeds go to charity. Once the concerts are over Musicmakers go into rehearsals for their Christmas Concerts on 13th and 15th December.

ESRA North Invades Menorca from Howard Mullen Bosquet de Boquer Over the past year, one of the popular activities of ESRA North are the Walking Treasure Hunts of local towns in the North of Mallorca. It was decided to widen the range of these events and the next town to be selected was Ciutadella, the old capital of Menorca. Last week 42 members of ESRA North took the ferry from Alcudia and on arriving in Menorca made their way to the centre of Ciutadella, where sheets containing the clues were distributed, and the treasure hunt was off! The walk took participants through old parts of the City and through the shopping area. They were able to view the Cathedral and The Convent, and because it was National Visitors Day

As of Monday 2, a series of improvements to the Bosquet de Bóquer will be implemented before the beginning of the imminent birdwatching season. The work will last for about a week. El Bosquet de Bóquer is a green zone, owned by the council, located in an urban setting, and of great environmental value as it is a holm oak forest. admission to local attractions was free. After lunch and a walk to the harbour, it was time to return to the ferry for the journey home. At the following Thursday Club the award for the winners of the treasure hunt was made to Jan O’Hara by the Chair of ESRA North, Chris Maynard, and members thanked Brian Lowndes and Chris and Bob Maynard for all their hard work that had made the Treasure Hunt such a success.

Your online travel guide for everything you need to plan, book & enjoy your holiday

The clearing of denser areas, without eliminating forest cover, especially along the Carrer de la Pedrera will form the main part of the work. All will be carried out with great care, for example the roots of the catalogued species (Murtes and Garballons) will be left and the remaining low shurbs will be reduced while respecting other species that improve diversity. Paths and bins will also be installed. Partial closure during the work will limit access.

Rental Laws In August, TOTN reported on the enforcement of the rental laws that has left owners of apartments (or any property without a valid rental permit) open to huge fines ranging between €20,000-€40,000; Internet platforms would face larger fines of up to €400,000. With a designated email service for neighbours to inform authorities and the first range of fines being made, the enforcement had the desired effect and many owners have removed their property from the rental market and thousands of holiday-makers have had their trips cancelled. While the lack of long term rentals and rising property prices need to be addressed, the resulting chaos for property owners

and businesses (both local and from overseas) has seen a huge backlash. Many people face losing livelihoods and many more are missing out on a holiday to a place they love and have been able to afford. Jan Dexter of Parasol Properties has followed the activity closely and reports from the latest Foro Vacacional Meeting which was held in Alcudia two weeks ago. There was some great advice and support from the leading members of the group, absent though was the Directora de Turismo who sent a substitute in her place while joining the talk via Skype. While the connection was not 100% reliable, what was totally clear from the Tourist

Office authorities is that anyone who has been offering residential apartments to tourists for weekly rental is breaking the law and should consider themselves lucky that they haven’t been caught. She reminded everyone that holiday rental of apartments or any property with no license is an illegal activity and will be punished with fines. The Director also stressed that any type of publicity whether it’s online or physical “for rent” signs is committing a crime as it is prohibited to advertise.

many properties will not have a license to rent. It was pointed out that a license system and a regulation of the actual system was requested not a ban and such heavy restrictions. Disappoointment was also expressed at how it had taken two and a half years to reach this stage, leaving some to speculate that the best bet would be a change of government rather than wait for another 2 or 3 years for reforms to the law to be considered, agreed and applied.

However, the law is going to allow some apartment owners the opportunity to apply for a license, as long as they meet the long list of requirements and if the local Town Hall has confirmed they will accept holiday rentals in their municipality. In the new year, the Consell de Mallorca will confirm which areas will be able to apply for a license.

Other issues discussed were fines for those offering one property compared to those offering 1,000, where the latter would receive a much larger fine. The price of the license was laso discussed and members of the audience pointed out that all tourist places should not be considered the same. For example a 5-star hotel should not be considered the same as a 2-star apartment.

Regarding rentals for properties with a permit, villas, chalets, townhouses there must not be any infringement of the local bylaws, the property must have a valid cedula de habilidad which clearly shows how many places there are on offer. For example, a threebedroomed villa offers 6 places, not 8. While useful, the meeting came with frustrations. There was very little change to the information already out there, rather a call for patience and the acceptance that for 2018,

The frustrations are clear and the consequences for those who rely on this side of the local tourist industry are looking even clearer. What you can do is head to your local tourist board and give them your thoughts in writing. You can also write to your local mayor to urge them to accept tourist rentals in residential properties. Thanks to Jan Dexter of Parasol Property Mallorca.

Bacares Park up at Duva, follow the sign to Siller on the right. Once you see the iron Siller sign, 500m later, you turn left. Take in the views and the hill coming up ahead of you. You will be up there very soon. Along the way you will come to a gate with a padlock, but don’t worry, this is mere gesture probably to ward off roaming cars. You can walk through, no problem. Now you are really on your way – up. The path is a bit rough but always marked with cairns or arrows made of stone. The walk up is a steady climb, not too taxing but if you need to catch your breath, stand back and admire the view that has been gathering behind you. And once you get to the top, prepare yourself for another one of those breathtaking moments as Cala Sant Vicent appears before you. 100m on, there is a narrow path on the left. It might not seem like a path but look for the rocks and red dots to be sure. Keep going, before you know it, the beach will appear and you can enjoy a café con leche at the bottom.

Puig de Maria

Looking for an e-bike? Think of us!

It sounds simple but this stunning stretch of the bay is often overlooked. Parallel to the main road between Alcudia and Puerto Pollensa, this coastline is hidden by the urbanization of Bacares. However, turn off the main road just after (or before if coming from Alcudia) the kitesurf shops and park up where you can. You are no more than 25m from

the shore. Once there you will be rewarded with a beautiful seascape of the bay of Pollensa. The shoreline goes on and on and you’ll take in not just the sea views but some stunning properties that will leave you searching the property pages for prices and availability. Keep walking until you find Red Rum, a British-owned pub that serves good old egg and chips and more.

P.Pollensa-Cala A trip to Pollensa is not complete without a trek to the top of Puig de Maria. As you leave the Old Town the signposted road is on the left side. Park in town and walk up, don’t try and drive or you may be looking at a tricky 10-point turn. Instead join the regulars who jog, run, cycle (seriously) or simply mosey their way up. It’s a steady walk uphill but with many twists and turns and viewpoints (and benches) it’s totally doable. The cobblestones at the top are a sign that you are there but don’t get too excited, they can take another 10 minutes or so. Look out for the seat in the stone. At the top is the monastery with a beautiful chapel. Attached is the hermitage where you can picnic, or even cook a meal and eat in the long picturesque dining room. Walk around the building and take in the different viewpoints. Then enjoy a coffee from the café before heading back down. Or why not sleepover to complete the experience?

The Mallorquinista Free and Clear

by Charles Nutter

After the latest round of matches Real Mallorca are four points clear at the top of Group 3 in La Segunda B and confidence is growing by the day. After seven games it is clear that the islanders are probably the strongest team in the Group with Elche in second place. However, even if the team win the Group it must be remembered that this does not grant automatic promotion back to Segunda A. They would have to play off over two games against one of the winners of another of the four groups. Victory over two legs would then take them up. So, after 38 games it is a lottery over two games and that is why Segunda B is known as the well. Easy to fall into but difficult to climb out of. Defeat in that play-off would then pit Mallorca against teams who finish second, third and fourth in the groups in a series of matches. Following on from the possible heart condition that striker Cedric suffered in a recent away game at Ontinyent, it was revealed that no doctor was in attendance at the match which is a breach of league rules. A request for a doctor over the tannoy was actually answered by a medico who is the father of the Ontinyent goalkeeper. Cedric was taken to hospital in a civil protection car as there was no ambulance at the ground, another breach of regulations. Mallorca have stated that if the home team cannot guarantee a doctor then the islanders will take their own, Doctor Munar, on the trip. The ‘Americanization’ of Mallorca is taking on a new dimension after it was announced that up to 20 fans could attend press conferences on payment of €15. They are not allowed to ask questions in the conference but meet head coach Vicente Moreno for a buffet and chat afterwards. Moreno was bemused by these events saying he had never heard of anything similar in Spanish football. He did enjoy the first of these meetings but commented wryly that as the

team had just won 4 nil everyone was happy and it might be different after a defeat. Steve Nash and Stuart Holden who are part of the consortium that bought the club even trained with the first team for a day. Nash is a former Basketball star and Holden a former international footballer. Mallorca’s next game is at home to Cornella this Sunday 8th October followed by a trip to Ebro the week after.

Real Mallorca 4-0 Llagostera

A goal fest for the fans with two from Alex Lopez and strikes from Abdon Prats and Lago Junior. Mallorca were visibly superior to the visitors and the fans enjoyed every second. This was the first time in four years that the islanders had won by four goals without reply.

Alcoyano 0-2 Real Mallorca

This was the perfect away display. The home side huffed and puffed but Lago Junior set up the opener for Abdon with a superb piece of skill and then scored a brilliant individual goal himself. Sadly Lago was sent off in the final seconds for an alleged act of aggression and replays showed the defender committed a blatant simulation and there was no contact. An appeal would be successful but Lago refused to leave the pitch and argued with the referee for several minutes. He will face disciplinary charges for that and may be suspended for a number of matches.
