WINTER IS APPROACHING FASTER THAN YOU CAN SAY BRRRR... Do chilly temperatures get you down? If shovelling your driveway and scraping ice off your car sounds less apealing than hiking in a rain forest or sunning yourself on a white sandy beach, it’s time to start planning a warm-weather get-away. As Canadians get their first real blast of winter, they’re doing what Canadians do – head south. Winter break is as Canadian as Tim Horton’s double-double. Those who can go, do. So trade your sweaters and parkas for swimsuits and sunscreen and head south this winter. A hotspot vacation will warm you up through the coming months of winter. 3

THE 10 BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN 2020 If you’re looking for the new places to visit in 2020, here are some popular suggestions that can help you pinpoint the perfect destination. International travel is a big trend for 2020. Here are the best places to visit: 1. Dubrovnik, Croatia Dubrovnik is a shimmering beauty on the Dalmatian coast, say travel agents. The medieval walled city facing the Adriatic Sea is saturated with ancient history. Dubrovnik appeals to history and culture buffs, as well as Millennial travelers, and of course “Game of Thrones” fans. 2. Atacama Desert, Chile This desert, located about 8,000 feet above sea level, is often compared to Arches National Park or Canyonlands National Park in Utah. You can spend most of your time hiking and biking the surrounding mountains and canyons, bird watching, and visiting picturesque villages and ancient ruins.
best places to visit in 2020. It has one-of-a-kind experiences such as a candlelit dinner in the middle of the desert replete with camel rides, belly dancers and fire eaters. 6. Kigali, Rwanda Rwanda in general and Kigali as the capital gateway city have really come into their own since the genocide a generation ago. Kigali is clean, safe and filled with enlightening cultural experiences from world-class modern art galleries to fashion, local crafts and even a coffee co-op run by women making the world’s best coffee.
10. Amangiri/Lake Powell, Utah/Antelope Canyon, Arizona The scenery and outdoor elements are unlike anywhere else in the U.S. Plus, it’s just a four-hour drive from Phoenix or Vegas — or easily accessible by private plane.

7. Bariloche/Patagonia Argentina Bariloche, the northern part of Patagonia, is famous for its scenic lakes and offers activities like hiking, biking, golf, and water sports. A popular choice is the Llao Llao, a hotel perched on a small hill, framed by lakes, woods and the Andean peaks.
3. Tel Aviv, Israel Tel Aviv has become a culinary center in recent years. Check out the white Bauhaus buildings lining the wide, tree-dotted promenades. Tel Aviv is also welcoming to members of the LGBT community, according to Ovation.
8. Cape Town, South Africa The warm mild climate makes Cape Town a fantastic destination. The views of the ocean and the fantastic botanical gardens make this cosmopolitan city a most worthwhile place to visit all year long.
4. Porto/Douro Valley, Portugal Porto has great food, wine, the sights, perfect weather and reasonable costs. Porto is great for couples.
9. Palermo/Sicily, Italy The island of Sicily contains some of the most remarkable sites in the world, including the legendary Valley of the Temple, where the remains of seven Doric temples stand in a breathtaking setting of almond groves and olive
5. Marrakech, Morocco Marrakech is another up-and-coming destination on the list of the 20
trees. Sicily has an authenticity to it that has faded from many other parts of the world.

By: Wayne Hansen Visit Malaysia 2020 will bring out the best of what Malaysia has to offer to the world in a single, event-packed year. The year 2020 holds a special place in the heart of all Malaysians as they reflect and celebrate all their successes and challenges in transforming a once colonial land, into a thriving, multi-cultural and dynamic country. The Visit Truly Asia Malaysia 2020 campaign has now been launched and visitors can now start planning their visit to Malaysia featuring over 20 Fantastic Festivals during the next 12 months throughout 2020. I recently returned from media press trip to Malaysia that featured a reminiscence tour of the culture and heritage of Malaysia. With the many cultures that have found a home in Malaysia, the food showcases its uniqueness and the many specialties has become one of, if not the, highlight of a trip there. Even in ancient times, Malaysia was a designated stop on the world’s spice trade route. As a result, local foods bring together flavors from all over the known world to create a special flavor only found there. A visit to Malaysia will usually start at Kuala Lumpur which has been hailed as a first-class city, while its surrounding areas are still pretty traditional, cre-
Visit M ating a mixed landscape of old and new. Its newer and more prominent buildings still derive their design from traditional Malay architecture, thus creating buildings with eclectic flair. Much of the Malaysian landscape is similar and still transitioning from antique to modern. What makes Malaysia so unique and interesting is the multitudes of Asian ethnicities that have settled in Malaysia over centuries, forming their own special blends distinct from their original cultures. Each culture with their respective religions is expressed and celebrated harmoniously, as an example for the rest of the world. Listening to Malaysians having a conversation is possibly one of the most interesting things to do, as most locals have a habit of alternating between all the languages they know as they speak (known as code-switching). This often involves their mother tongue combined with English and Malay. However, almost everyone I encountered from drivers, to waiters, to store clerks almost all spoke English giving Malaysia one more reason to make a visit there that much more enjoyable. One of the attractions of Malaysia is shopping….shopping…shopping.
Our group had an opportunity to visit some of the mega malls that make ours back home seem small. The first things you will notice is how inexpensive all forms of clothes are. Come with an empty suitcase and leave with modern fashions at a fraction of the cost you would pay back home. The low cost of goods, be it of the edible, wearable or simply displayable variety attracts visitors from all over the world. Another activity is to visit the distinctive day and night markets, frequented by everyone regardless of income and class, which provides great insight into the everyday life of the average Malaysian. Malaysian weather is truly an experience. Since it’s right on the equator, the country’s tropical humidity – a mixture of both high heat and sudden rains – is like no other. While this almost unpredictable weather pattern may seem daunting to some, it’s all part of the charm. Explore the many landscapes of Malaysian climate: from sweltering heat in the urban jungle, to perfect strawberry-growing climate in the Cameron Highlands, to absolutely gorgeous beach-lounging weather on all the beaches and resorts. 6
Malaysia 2020 Since much of Malaysia has been inhabited by traders and job-seeking immigrants from many parts of the world since the 1800s, it is no wonder that many towns still bear the cultural remnants in their architecture. States such as Penang and Melaka are particularly famous for maintaining these historical buildings and have been declared UNSESCO World Heritage sites to protect these relics of eras past for current and future generations. Our itinerary in Melaka took us to the Hang Tuah Centre which is a museum and tourism complex dedicated to the famous legendary Malay warrior, Laksamana (Admiral) Hang Tuah. While there we were presented with a display of martial arts from students and local music. Well worth visiting. We then visited the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum which was acquired by the Chan family in 1861. Four generations lived in the house before it was opened as a museum. You’ll partake in a journey into late 19th-century and early 20th century Malaya which offers a glimpse into the richness of the culture and the 7
opulence that was fashionable in many pre-world war II Peranakan homes. An evening Melaka River Cruise is one of the must do things if you visit Melaka. The 45-minute cruise passes through the downtown area with view of old warehouses, shops, restaurants and a traditional Malay village. You’ll find lots of good graffiti art on the building which adds to the atmosphere. Towards the end of our visit we had an opportunity to visit Lonek Homestay which offers visitors an opportunity to live on a short stay with local Malaysian families in a traditional Kampung (village) or simply visit for a day. They offer a complete program of learning how to cook traditional foods, making handicrafts and participating in games and recreational activities. The diversity of Malaysia’s population has brought together the many art
styles and techniques from all over Asia, producing a distinct design in architecture, fashion and food. The best of these fusions is seen in the Peranakan, or Baba-Nyonyan, tradition, which combines beautiful batik print patterns with oriental embroidery and beading, creating one of Southeast Asia’s most beautiful styles. The architecture in unique as it mixes Chinese designs with Malay motifs. A trip to Malaysia should be on everyone’s bucket list for many reasons. A melting pot of most of the world, this beautiful country has much to offer that sets it apart from the rest of Southeast Asia. Here are more than 20 fantastic festivals to choose from during the coming year to convince you to start planning a trip there today.

The Canadian Company Shifting the Loyalty Landscape in Favour of Consumers
A
s loyalty programs continue to gain popularity for their ability to reward frequent shoppers, the problem with the traditional loyalty and rewards industry remains the same. Canadians are forced to split their support amongst several companies requiring a different card, code, coupon, or app to collect rewards. Rewards can often only be spent in one place and are often difficult for members to track due to complicated point systems that can equate to little monetary value. That’s no longer the case, thanks to innovators like Toronto-based startup Paymi, who is removing the effort and guesswork from traditional loyalty and rewards programs by simplifying the reward experience and treating cash as king. “Canadians love loyalty programs, but the whole premise of the loyalty industry is undergoing a period of transformation and disruption,” says Paymi co-founder and CEO John Flett. “The legacy programs have seen great success, but today’s consumers and merchant partners expect much more.” As a
card-linking rewards platform, Paymi seeks to provide more by delivering on a different value proposition for both users and merchants.

The art of double dipping and accelerated earnings
By providing a frictionless transaction in which consumers receive cash back from retailers themselves, Paymi enables members to gain accelerated earnings when they shop with Paymi partners, like CIBC, Leon’s, Urban Barn, Indigo, Staples, Burger King, and Mary Brown’s. “We’re giving consumers what they want by bringing greater value to members and our merchant partners,” says Paymi co-founder and CCO Rob Shields. “Paymi enables users to earn cash on top of their credit and debit card rewards without having to remember to show another card or activate a particular offer.” The convenient, effortless, and rewarding transaction model of disruptive startups like Paymi is unquestionably changing the loyalty landscape in Canada, ushering in a new era of empowerment for both consumers

and brands in the process. With over $1 million in rewards given in 2019, Paymi’s seamless experience and ability to give cash rewards are why so many Canadians are signing on to the platform. Gavin Davidson

Big Data, Bigger Rewards: Driving Value to 11 Million and Counting time. The leading-edge work we are doing in machine learning and automation is enabling us to deliver personalized experiences at scale ensuring both Collectors and Partners get great value from the Program.
Using AI and machine learning to improve the AIR MILES Collector experience
E
very day, Canadian consumers are willingly providing their personal data to major brands through loyalty programs, digital footprints, marketing communications and more. They understand the value exchange that these programs are built on. Consumers join a program for the perks, and in exchange, they provide access to their shopping behaviour to help brands provide a more valuable experience. However, if you ask consumers, most would say they are not getting fair value in exchange for their data. Many brands are capturing data without having the infrastructure or capability to translate the vast amount of data points into relevant and meaningful value for their customers. They promise a simple, relevant and valuable experience, but aren’t following through.
“If you ask
consumers, most would say they are not getting fair value in exchange for their data.”
As Canada’s favourite loyalty program, with more than two thirds of Canadian households actively participating, AIR MILES understands this disparity between customer expectation vs. reality. As an industry leader in the loyalty sector and expert in big data, AIR MILES is creating win-win relationships that provide value for its coalition of partners and its 11-million active Collectors. And it’s doing so while rewarding Canadians every two seconds through innovating on its strongest asset — Collector data.
Innovation in response to consumer needs
Since 1992, AIR MILES has been part of Canadians’ everyday experience, and the program has the unmatched ability to deliver value to its partners and Collectors alike. With a coalition of over 300 leading Canadian and global brands, including Sobeys, Shell, Rexall, and LCBO, AIR MILES Partners represent 80 percent of Canadian household spend. This network provides the framework for AIR MILES to collect, segment and act on big data in ways that create meaningful and rewarding offers, communications, and benefits for AIR MILES Collectors. “We strongly believe in the value exchange we offer our Collectors, and the corresponding impact it delivers to our Partners,” says Rachel MacQueen, Senior VP of Marketing and Collector Experience at AIR MILES. “It’s not enough to understand our Collectors. We need to use that insight to deliver the right offer, to the right Collector, at the right
Data analytics are among the driving forces in AIR MILES evolution. The AIR MILES data platform allows the collection and synthesis of 6,000 attributes per Collector, enabling a richer, more personalized experience through offers, marketing campaigns, and in-store experiences. Data collection at this scale benefits the consumer through a personalised experience that translates this data exchange into meaningful value for consumers. Just ask fans of beloved brands such as Amazon, Netflix. Hudson’s Bay, or Nike. The way these brands are enhancing the customer experience — where product recommendations and individual experiences are now table stakes — is turning casual customers into loyal fans due in large part to how they are collecting and segmenting data. AIR MILES has an intimate understanding of individual interests and habits of Canadian consumers, which allows the loyalty program to recommend experiences that reflect its customers lifestyles and delivers more value back to the Collector. While it seems simple, it’s a premise that is all the more impressive given that over 85 percent of companies’ big data projects struggle or fail.1 “Looking ahead, we’re planning to implement significant changes to the program in 2020 that we know will disrupt the loyalty landscape and excite Canadians coast-tocoast,” says MacQueen. “We’re tapping into our proprietary tools and technology and responding with a brand evolution that will cement AIR MILES’ leadership position within the Canadian loyalty landscape and drive even more value back to our Collectors. We can’t wait to share that with all of Canada.” Mediaplanet

Finally, You Can Use Your Rewards Your Way
early 80 percent of Canadians have a credit card with rewards. With hundreds of options available — each with a different niche — it can be a challenge to find the right fit. Cardholders are constantly looking for cards that do more and that are tailored to their unique needs and spending habits. The ultimate, of course, would be a card that offered completely flexible redemption — a card with cash back rewards that cardholders could redeem for absolutely anything they want, anytime, anywhere. This card would provide maximum flexibility to achieve bigger dreams and quicker gratification. With every purchase made, customers could reward themselves and move closer to buying the things and enjoying the experiences they covet the most. That card is finally here.
Spend, earn, redeem your way
Rogers Bank has three unique credit cards that offer cash back rewards, each with no annual fee. They can be used to earn cash on almost everything you buy and the cash can be redeemed as needed without limitations on how much, when, or how often. This opens up a world of possibilities without the category restrictions that make rewards with other cards more difficult to redeem. Whether your dream is a tropical vacation, luxury kitchen gadgets, or a discount on your household essentials and gas, cash back rewards put the power in your hands. Every type of purchase qualifies as a reward, so you can forget about being locked in with limited redemption choices and having to make selections from reward-specific sites. This program allows you to redeem your cash back rewards at Airbnb, Uber, Spotify, Netflix, Amazon, food delivery, or for whatever suits their needs. “We focused on improving the redemption experience so cardholders could enjoy
more freedom and flexibility,” says Richard McLaughlin, Rogers Bank CEO. “Our unique Mastercard Pay with Rewards app gives cardholders an unparalleled experience, where they can apply their cash back rewards at any of the 44 million merchants worldwide that accept Mastercard. It’s intuitive and easy to use, and most cardholders can earn cash back rewards on all of their purchases so they’re getting the best value possible.”
Richard McLaughlin CEO, Rogers Bank

All of the cash back rewards credit cards from Rogers Bank are available to everyone and are not restricted to Rogers or Fido customers. Just imagine redeeming your credit card rewards with the complete freedom to do it on your terms. Cash back rewards on purchases made with a Rogers Bank Mastercard can be redeemed instantly, and rewards on purchases made within the last 90 days can be redeemed using the Mastercard Pay with Rewards app, which is available from the App Store or Google Play. More Rewards Seeks New Partners to Join Data-Led Loyalty Program
he 2017 Colloquy Loyalty Census reported memberships grew 35 percent from 2012 to 2016, to the tune of 175 million total members in Canada. Retail made up more than half the number, though coalition programs showed the fastest growth at 78 percent. There are now several programs, such as More Rewards, that include different retailers. To accommodate a greater consumer desire for personalization, the More Rewards program is entering a new phase in its history, introducing new ways for members to earn more personalized digital offers for their loyalty. Operating for over 25 years, it has navigated the shift from paper to plastic, and on to digital. What started out as a certificate program in the 1990s, it is now a powerful marketing platform with over 3.4 million members in Western Canada under its loyalty program delivering personalised offers.
Driving loyalty
“The cornerstone for the success of a coalition loyalty program is having a grocer as the anchor,” says Steve Allmen, Co-Founder and President of Loyalty & Co. Allmen believes members want to earn more and redeem faster, which is why programs that rewards points on a large number of what a customer spends have been popular with consumers. They are likely to collect and receive bigger and better rewards more consistently. Save-On-Foods has been the foundational partner of More Rewards, with over 80 percent of member transactions through the program. More retailers have since joined, including Petro-Canada, Panago Pizza, Aviva, and Coast Hotels, among others, amounting to 2,000 retail locations accepting More Rewards cards. All told, the program issued over 11 billion points in 2018 alone. “Consumers don’t want to carry 10 different loyalty cards, and only get a small amount of value from them,” says Dan Howe, President of More Rewards. “That’s why many brands can save money and get more engagement by partnering with More Rewards versus building their own program.” “We have invested in building a wide variety of redemption options for our customers including grocery products, travel, gift cards, and tickets,” says Howe. “We are in the ‘thank you’ business. Our goal is to excite
19
INNOVATINGCANADA.CA
our customers so that they’re so happy with their free rewards they’ll want to tell their friends and family about it.” Howe says the program is expanding its “emotional experiences,” like tickets to sporting events and travel. Its travel program allows members to book a trip with any combination of points and cash. “Most people think they deserve something if they’re giving up their data in exchange for their loyalty,” says Allmen. “And many members dream big, whether it’s a trip, hockey tickets — something for being part of a program that includes various retailers.”
Steve Allmen Co-Founder & President, Loyalty & Co.
Building partnerships
More Rewards uses member data to personalize offers and communication. Howe cites an example from Save-On-Foods, whereby customers receive a threshold offer tied to how much they’ve spent in stores through the retailer’s app. This means more meaningful incentives tied to individual consumers spend and higher return on marketing investment. “Our goal with partner expansion is to find great, like-minded brands that can help build value and grow the combined customer base,” he says. “We provide better technology and tools to drive loyalty with existing partners. The Data Management Platform (DMP) better segments and targets customers in digital media buying, and that’s a big strategy for More Rewards going forward.” He adds the “sweet spot” is looking at consumer habits to provide incentives to change them. One example could be someone buying diapers from Save-On-Foods, but not wipes. He feels offering bonus points, tailored to exactly what that person buys is the best incentive. Ted Kritsonis

Calabria – At the southern tip of Italy, the toe of the boot, across the Strait of Messina from Sicily, is the Region of Calabria. The region is known for its warm Mediterranean climate, excellent wines, unique flavours of the local cuisine, beautiful beaches, ancient heritage and stunning scenery. The nearly 800 kilometers of shoreline of the Ionian Sea to the east and south, and Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, alternate between sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. Some of the beaches have been recognized as being among the most beautiful in the world. The rugged, rocky shores showcase an altogether different kind of beauty. Ancient history can be seen in coastal towns and in the mountainous interior of the region. National Parks offer an abundance of unspoiled nature. Calabria is Italy unfiltered. It is the region that gave Italy its name and whose culture, history and flavours are a big part of what makes Italy, Italy. 20

Crotone includes the region’s most famous DOC, Ciro. Ciro wines are mostly red and must contain at least 95 percent Gaglioppo grapes with up to 5 percent white Greco Bianco and Trebbiano grapes allowed. White wines from at least 90% Greco Bianco and up to 10% Trebbiano are also produced in Ciro. Although the wine has changed over the years, Ciro wine was offered to winners of the ancient Olympics. Several additional wine regions are located in Crotone.
Calabria cuisine is famous for its use of the Calabrian hot pepper. Calabrese Salami is eaten around the world. The primary food crops in the region are olives and citrus fruit. The sweet red tropea onion, local extra-virgin olive oil, lemons and locally grown herbs all make Calabrese cuisine unique. Wines were produced in Calabria even before the time of the ancient Greeks. Currently, the main grape varieties in the region are Gaglioppo and Greco. Both originated in Greece. Calabria is divided into 5 provinces; Catanzaro, Reggio Calabria, Cosenza, Crotone and Vibo Valentia. Spread throughout the provinces are 12 DOC ( Denominazione di origine controllata ) wine regions. To be labelled a DOC wine, producers must follow strict guidelines regarding every aspect of varietal content and production.
Crotone is on the eastern coast of central Calabria. It contains many historic sites, some dating back to Neolithic times, as well as castles and cathedrals. It includes a portion of one of Calabria’s national parks as well as a protected marine area. Catanzaro stretches across central Calabria from east coast to west. It is the narrowest point on the Italian peninsula. Several of the recognized wine regions can be found in western Catanzaro. Calabria’s regional capital is the city of Catanzaro. The province includes most of Sila National Park which features many lakes and large forested areas. The coasts include some of the regions best beaches. Vibo Valentia, on the west coast of southern Calabria, is farmland and forest, backdropped by the Serre Mountains. Hillsides are covered with olive, orange and lemon groves, vineyards and cornfields. Reggio Calabria is Calabria’s most densely populated province. It covers the southern tip of the Italian peninsula. It is a province of forests mixed with vineyards, olive and citrus groves and is known for production of clementines and bergamot. To learn more about Calabria, go to
www.italia.it/en/discover-italy/calabria
Cosenza, the largest and most populated of the provinces, covers the northern half of Calabria. It stretches from the east coast to the west and is primarily mountainous. For history buffs it shows plenty of evidence, dating back to prehistoric times, of the many civilizations that have at times call it home. Cozenza includes many of the wine regions, most producing mainly red wines with anywhere from 50 to 90 percent Gaglioppo grapes. 22
