TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT| WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 2012 | 3
Welcome to
Springtime Tallahassee! Ron Mowrey, President and Ginger Hoffman, General Chairman welcome.
W
elcome to the 46th Springtime Tallahassee Festival. Each year, almost as soon as we wrap-up a festival we jump right in to planning for the upcoming year. This year was no different. As we started the process we found we were in an excited state of “rallying the troops.” Behind the scenes is often a flurry of creative brainstorming followed by strategic organizing and all with the help of our many troops. Who are the people behind Springtime Tallahassee you might ask? We are a group of community members who have joined a membership with Springtime Tallahassee. We work hard and play hard, give back to our community through Krewe philanthropy service projects and fundraising, and network all the while making lifetime friends. We are an open membership and inclusive to the entire community. This year we have well over 400 springtime members volunteering their time and talents to put on the Springtime Festival. Without the tremendous support of our corporate partners, in-kind contributors and sponsors our vision wouldn’t come to life each year. Without you, our patrons of the event, consisting of our community members and out-of-town visitors, we wouldn’t have an audience to work for annually. As we thought of all the moving parts and people that make our festival successful, our rallying of the troops encompassed a much larger community than just our Springtime membership, it includes you. So we thought it fitting to theme this year’s festival “RALLY N TALLY” in honor of the many people that make a commitment to come together and celebrate Springtime Tallahassee, the city where Spring begins. Please join us this year to experience true Southern hospitality. The festival includes layers of entertainment for friends and families just around each corner. Kick-off your morning with one of the largest and most celebrated parades in the southeast. After viewing the awe-inspiring float entries, check out the Jubilee in the Park. The Jubilee winds its way through downtown Tallahassee offering a variety of sights, sounds and activities. There is music, food, hand-made arts and crafts, a children’s park, and community entertainment. Arts and Crafts booths will showcase over 200 local, regional and national vendors. The Children’s Park will offer games, activities and educational displays. Photo by Long’s Photography Two entertainment stages will provide a variety of music and performing arts Ginger Hoffman, General Chairman & Ron Mowrey, President throughout the afternoon. Ignite your taste buds by visiting the Food Court and order up delicious tasting food from many local food vendors. On Kleman Plaza, you will find the Main Stage Music Festival, featuring national entertainment & our Beer Garden. This is an opportunity to enjoy tremendous talent and unwind after a day of parade watching, walking around our beautiful downtown and shopping with good friends. We look forward to seeing you on March 29th for a Rally N Tally at Springtime Tallahassee! Take advantage of all the charm our city has to offer and make memories of a lifetime with us.

Free Services that May Double Your Chances of Quitting for Good Fifty years ago, Americans did not know that cigarettes were deadly. They were widely used - 42 percent of Americans smoked - and most did so without thinking twice about future health implications. The landmark event that began to enlighten America about the true dangers of tobacco was the first United States Surgeon General’s report on smok-ing and health, which was released 50 years ago this year. Since then, progress has been made, as the current smoking rate among adults is about half what it was in 1964. Despite that progress, a gruesome and all-too-familiar fact continues to cast a pall: tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. Cigarette use alone results in 28,600 deaths every single year in Florida. Fortunately here in Florida, tobacco users have help. Tobacco Free Florida was established in 2007 as the result of a constitutional amendment. So voters asked, and the Florida Department of Health has listened, providing a comprehensive program to educate Floridians about the dangers of tobacco use and providing resources to help people quit. In 2012, the adult smoking rate in Florida was 17.7 percent, which was below the 2012 national average of 19.6 percent. There has also been a significant decline of youth smokers throughout the state. Florida’s high school smoking rate reached an all-time low of 8.6 percent in 2013, one of the lowest high school smoking rates in the country and far below the national average. Making the choice to quit the use of tobacco is not an easy one to make. Tobacco Free Florida has free and convenient quit services that can double a user’s success in quitting for good. The state’s services include evidence-based cessation counseling and free FDA-approved nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) when medically appropriate. Tobacco Free Florida’s resources have directly helped more than 93,000 Floridians quit.
Available in both English and Spanish, the quit services offer the support and information you need to make a plan and stick to it. Since the experience includes many opportunities to handle animals that are totally new to most visitors, a key part of the program involves encouraging children to overcome fear of the unknown and in doing so to build new self esteem.

The Parade & Grand Marshal Join us for a “Rally N Tally” for the 46th Annual Springtime Tallahassee Grand Parade on March 29th at 10:30 am Come see over 100 colorful units and floats, marching bands, dance groups, Springtime Krewe floats and much more. The parade steps off on Monroe Street just south of the intersection of Monroe Street and Brevard Street and travels south on Monroe past the Florida Capitol ending at Madison Street. The first Springtime parade featured many costumes and only horse drawn units.
Today, the parade still includes horse-drawn carriages to provide a bit of nostalgia; however, it also boosts elaborately clad characters and spectacular mechanical floats from all over the southeastern United States. Springtime Tallahassee is considered one of the largest festivals in the southeastern U.S., attracting over 150,000 attendees.

Meet the 2014 Grand Marshals
U.S.
ARMED FORCES
A Grand Marshal is a person honored as the ceremonial master of a parade or special event. Each year, Springtime Tallahassee puts a great deal of thought and consideration into the Master of Ceremonies to kick-off the Grand Parade. Past Springtime Grand Marshal’s have included local & state leaders, long-time media personalities, college football coaches, the founder of a very popular chain restaurant and even a Tallahassee native who has made it big in Hollywood. This year, Springtime Tallahassee had a desire to recognize a very special group. All of the past Grand Marshals have made significant contributions to our community and this year is no different. This group not only defends our liberties, but has also made centuries of sacrifices to ensure our continued freedom. We want to recognize those efforts and the families behind the service men and women who protect our nation. It is with great honor that we announce the 2014 Grand Marshals as the United States Armed Forces. We are thrilled to pay tribute to the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force. We invite you to join us in a very warm welcome to the Armed Forces representatives who will kick-off the Springtime Tallahassee Grand Parade. The Army, Navy, and Marine Corps were established in 1775, in concurrence with the American Revolution. In 1790, the Coast Guard (part of Homeland Security in peace time) was established. And in 1947, the U.S. Air Force was established.

They serve, together with the President and the General Chairman, as representatives of the organization. Andrew Jackson was chosen as a representative of Springtime Tallahassee because of his service to Florida as the first provisional governor in 1821. He later became the seventh President of the United States. The Andrew Jackson Staff is composed of members of the five Krewes, having been selected by each Krewe for a five-year active term. The Staff is a marching unit and participates not only in the Springtime Parade, but also in a number of festivals throughout Florida and other states. THE RACHEL STAFF

BELLES & GENTS Springtime Tallahassee’s Belles and Gents program is made up of young men and woman from grade 9 through grade 12. Throughout the year, the Belles and Gents develop poise, proper etiquette and self confidence while studying the history and traditions of Florida, Springtime Tallahassee, and the city of Tallahassee. Along with learning about our history, the Belles and Gents participate in several community projects that give back to our community. Springtime Tallahassee is very proud of the Belles and Gents and the wonderful way they care about our community.
